Because they know that they were wearing loin clothes when Yorubas had highly sophisticated communities and farms that spanned as far as the eyes could see. We should pity them and try to pamper them to feel better. Yorubas are very understanding, and will attempt to lift up people who did not even have traditional clothes until the Yoruba came to show them that grown up men should be covered, and gave them clothes to wear.
Yorubas with their rich culture need to be seriously cautioned. Stop yabbing these people about their comical clothes which consists of the used worn out Oyimbo shirt and the yoruba wrapper given to them as charity gifts from yoruba. Oh yes, and to top it up, they also wear Oyimbo hats and put feathers on them as well. Bad Yoruba people have concluded that these people were indeed savages before Oyinbo came to their villages. Meanwhile the Yorubas/Benins got angry and went to plant their own "oyel" too. But the Yorubas wait patiently while their harvest ripens and watches the "oyel" people swell up with their pomposity. Very soon Yorubas get tired of it and decide to listen more attentively to Becomerich and his nuances. . . .the EFCC may have already begun to pay for its failure to adequately prove criminal intent in the disbursement of the bank loans, as senior lawyers were headed for the courts and obtaining orders against the EFCC on the grounds that individuals were being detained unlawfully, beyond 48 hours. “Waziri is saying they are looking for others so they can prosecute all these cases together. I forsee the EFCC being swamped by more of these orders”'More here http://234next.com/csp/cms/sites/Next/News/National/5449947-147/EFCC_engaged_in_futile_showmanship_.cspI foresee the end of the EFCC as it rapidly sinks into irrelevance in an aimless whirlwind of noise and fury. As to the rest of your post, the CBN is expected to be 100% professional and beyond such basic errors. Even if you or I made such fundamental errors in a matter of this magnitude, any reasonable person would question our ability to handle the situation correctly, in fact all reasonable people would doubt our conclusions. |

morpheus24: I agree with the threat of war as a negotiating tool to effect compromise or effect change as some block heads won't move an inch until someone scares the bejesus out of them, However I am petrified that this power is growing in the hands or may fall into the hands of individuals who I deem incompetent and whose actual motive is not the actualization of a stable nigeria but really are a disgruntled few who want a piece of the pie.
They are not out for the people. The RUF started in this same fashion. Look at what they did to their own brothers. In the end was there real progress in sierra leone. I guess thats for the next generation to judge.
As for Nigeria I have seen no politician nor group with the principles that demonstrate true patriotism even within a given ethnic groups.
Until I hear and recognise that voice, Truthfuly I don't really know what the answer is. If done right and we opt for a true federation (or not so good, a lose confederation), the power at the center would be so dilute and the economic strings so thin and short; that only men with service at heart would want to vie positions at the center. Added to the above, there will be healthy competition between the various satellites in all sphere's, education, technology, business, innovation etc that will drive the nation forward. Right now there is no competition and no incentive to develop, all there is is the annual pilgrimage to Abuja for the years allowance. |

Kobojunkie: I agree with Morpheus here. I am of the mind that we are the architects of the problems we have in the country today and not until we collectively start working to resolve issues, we are bound to continue down the same part with no resolution in site. Yes, but what is the starting point? That is a question that must be answered. My argument is that every positive effort we make is in vain because there is no framework for the existence of the country as one. We are just bumbling along from adhoc step to adhoc step; the result is ever increasing chaos (and the inevitable corruption it engenders). |
Politics › Re: Ethnicity Is Grinding Nigeria To A Halt by Beaf: 10:27pm On Aug 26, 2009 |
morpheus24: Judging from how most African countries move at a snail's pace when trying to implement policy, that time frame looks unrealistic. even if such a resolution/contract is passed, the resistance by the old clergy is inevitable irrespective of ethnicity. It will take time for the weaning process znc z gradual ushering out of these people to be replaced by people who have proven tract records to strict adherance of law.The contract must be supported by a firm structural process. The process must be backed by strict rules and regulations which must be enforced without prejudice or favor.
I can't see this being complete in span of 5 years. True, it would take the movement of heaven for powers to even consider the position. If we reach that discussion, it would be because there is some sort of cataclysm threatening every comfort (legal and illegal) in the country and the only alternative is negotiation. In that light, it would be possible for agreements to be reached and enough time for the powerful to release their grip without losing face. In my opinion, we are now approaching a do or die moment in Nigeria, I'm sure we'll rather sit down and talk than die. If an agreement is reached and the various entities in the current agglomeration begin exploring and actualising their revenue potential; there will be such an explosion of financial opportunities all round that there should be minimal resistance. |

biina: The Central bank of Nigeria has noted claims by some individuals on the published list of debtors/defaulters that the figures posted against them are not correct and threatened to go to court. The bank has also noted some typographical errors regarding the titles of some government officials and some companies and wish to comment as follows: 1. The general public and all concerned should note that the list published is as at 31st May, 2009 and if any of the defaulters/debtors have made any repayments after that date, they should sort it out with the relevant bank. 2. The title “Accountant General” under Intercontinental Bank Plc list, should read “Accountant General of Zamfara State” while the name “Delta State Government” under the Oceanic Bank list, should read “Delta Steel Company” The Central Bank of Nigeria regrets any inconvenience caused as a result of the typographical errors mentioned. Meanwhile, list of other debtors/defaulters is being compiled and will be published on an on-going basis. Head Corporate Affairs, Central Bank of Nigeria 19th August, 2009

I missed your post above (I'm one of those really slow typers)
I see where you are coming from when you talk about our social culture. A contract unique to Nigeria cannot be realistically followed to the letter immediately. There will need to a period of years (I would suggest 5) for all states to wean themselves off revenue from the FG, begin paying taxes to the center and build their local instituitions. That period would also serve as a time for every individual to get used to the new realities. |

morpheus24: I agree with a contract btw citizen and state but am weary of the culture of corruption within the ranks of each ethnic group which promotes the self determination of the few over the many regardless of devolution of power.
Though accountablity will be more transparent it doesn't change much if real change is not effected. Corruption in Nigeria is rampant because of the unitary structure of the country. We have an all powerful center that provides stipends to very weak satellites. This is the direct opposite of successful nations where the economy is driven by the private sector and central govt gets revenue through agreed taxes. Our arrangement makes accountabilty difficult as crimes are committed far away at the center and are buried underneath layers of its bureaucracy. The power of the center is so attractive that, each region pitches all its efforts in either controlling or buying control of the center. The problem is with our structure. |

Article 2 provided for the succession of the House of Hanover, and for Protestant succession as set out in the English Act of Settlement. Article 3 provide for the creation of the one, unified, parliament of Great Britain. Articles 4–18 dealt with aspects of trade, movement, taxes, regulation etc to ensure equal treatment for all subjects of the new United Kingdom. Article 16 required the introduction of a common currency for Great Britain, subsequently effected through the 1707-1710 Scottish recoinage. Article 19 provided for the continuation of Scotland's separate legal system. Article 20 provided for the protection of heritable offices, superiorities, heritable jurisdictions, offices for life, and jurisdictions for life after the union. Article 21 provided for the protection of the rights of royal burghs. Article 22 provided for Scotland representation in the Parliament of Great Britain to be 16 Lords and 45 MPs. Article 23 provided for Scotland's peers to have the same rights as English peers in any trials of peers. Article 24 provided for the creation of a new Great Seal for the United Kingdom, different for the Great Seal of England (but that the English one could be used until it was created.) Article 25 provides that all laws of either Kingdom that may be inconsistent with the Articles in the Treaty are to be declared void." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treaty_of_Union |

This is not right, and Yoruba people should stop. lol[/b]
All this "oyel" that they toiled and planted into the ground must be preserved in their towns and stored refined and used to cook Isewu and periwinkle soup. With the amount of work that they exerted to make the "oyel" germinate, must be rewarded, and the rest of Nigeria needs to bow to them.
Suddenly, Lagos declares independence and Western Nigeria says "wait a minute, we are going with you". Lines get drawn and a future great nation is formed which suddenly announces Oil reserves of over 80 Billion barrels.
The story continues into everlasting as other large precious mineral deposits are located all over Yorubaland and the wealth pours in. Yorubaland then decides to pay each and everyone of it's citizens a minimum stipend of $45,000.00 per year, with full medical and social insurances, and also begins to import workers from China and Malaysia to provide labour services for it's citizens. Not being part of Nigeria, Yorubaland decides to stay out of the cartel known as OPEC because of the Arab agenda which is bent on stifling the Negro race. Suddenly, Citizens of Yorubaland become favourites for Visa offers from the West, and get treated on a higher level than Kuwaitis. larez: <<Watches Jealousy and rage swallow the fly on the wall as he realizes that he stands no chance. outclassed, out-maneuvered, and only left with his crotch to grab. he keeps swelling up and about to blow up as Larez steps back so the pus he calls blood does not stain his clothes. Larez gently dusts off his lapel shaking off the hata. Racist. |

The points you have brought up are more relevant to the West (in particular, the US) where consumption and carbon footprint are high.
The issue of climate change really applies only to the Niger Delta where we release more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere than the rest of sub-Saharan Africa combined. But we can control those emitions by doing things properly.
The whole World, not just Nigeria needs to look at consumption levels. The beauty of our situation is that nature works in our favour, if only we could harness it.
One of the prerequisites of development is the availability of convertible energy (usually electrical). I have not looked at the figures, but the amount of solar insolation in the Sahara is conjectured to be enough to power Europe. While we might not have the luxury of a local "Sahara", we do have enough solar energy from North to South to power the nation 24/7. We also have a long coastline with powerful waves; however, each year we cry about the ravages wave breaches at bar beach. We could harness that power instead.
Without an equitable national arrangement that recognises the responsibilities of citizen to state and the reverse, all steps forward will be mired in the entropy that is the battle for domination of the centre. What we lack is organisation.
PS Hurling abuse as a first line of defence doesn't tell well no matter what. |
