Politics › IPOB, ESN Attacks On Government Agencies Oppose Political Solution: Lai Mohammed by BeeBeeOoh(op): 8:27pm On Nov 29, 2021
The Federal Government has said the attacks on government agencies and agents by the Indigenous People of Biafra and the Eastern Security Network oppose the call for a political solution to their issue.

IPOB and ESN are separatist groups agitating for the restoration of the defunct Republic of Biafra.

Their leader, Nnamdi Kanu is currently in the custody of the Department of State Services after he was arrested in Kenya and brought to Nigeria to face charges bordering on terrorism and treasonable felony.

Since Kanu’s arrest, concerned Nigerians have urged the Federal Government to consider a political solution to end IPOB and ESN’s agitation.

This is said to be in consideration as recently stated by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN.

However, the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, on Monday, said such is being opposed by the continued attacks by IPOB and ESN on government agencies and agents.

He said this while condemning the killing of two policemen, warning that those who carried out the killings, videotaped their heinous act and circulated such will be apprehended and brought to justice.

He described the abduction of three policemen and the killing of two of them as an unacceptable attack against the state.

This was contained in a statement signed by the Special Assistant To The President on Media, Segun Adeyemi for the Office of the Minister of Information and Culture.

Mohammed said, “We have credible information that ASP Francis Idoko (AP No. 154945); Inspector Emmanuel Akubo (AP No. 222336) and Inspector Rufai Adamu (AP. No. 285009), all serving officers of the Nigeria Police, were abducted by members of the Eastern Security Network (ESN), acting on the instructions of their leader, Chinonso Okafor, aka TEMPLE, on 27 Nov. 2021.

“Two of the officers, Inspectors Akubo and Adamu, were killed in the most gruesome manner and their decapitated bodies videotaped and circulated widely. The leader of the ESN team that killed the two officers is one ‘GENTLE’.

“Chinonso Okafor, the most influential commander of ESN in charge of Imo and Anambra states, as well as ‘Gentle’ and all those who perpetrated the abhorrent act will be made to face swift and sure justice.”

According to the statement, “Alhaji Mohammed said the targeting and killing of security agents, under any guise, is a direct attack on the state and will not be tolerated.

“He said the continued attacks on security agents as well as agencies of government by ESN/IPOB are diametrically opposed to the call in certain quarters for a political solution to the IPOB issue, and wondered why those making such calls have yet to condemn the appalling murder of serving police officers.

“The Minister paid tribute to the officers, who made the supreme sacrifice in the service of their fatherland, as well as all security agents who are serving the nation to the best of their ability in a most difficult moment.

“He also condoled with the families of the slain officers, praying that God will comfort and strengthen them.”

They were accused of being behind the deaths of many locals in the community, ABN TV gathered.

Items recovered from them include red candles, white feathers, live chickens, and others.

One of the suspects, a member of the community whose identity could not be ascertained as at the moment of this report is said to have a shrine in his home, which was later demolished by the angry locals.

His counterpart is said to be from outside the community.

Upon interrogation, they claimed they are only exercising their religious rites, insisting that they have not committed any crime.
Please, how did they become ritualists because I didn't see the crime they committed here?

Politics › Festus Keyamo: Lagos Judicial Panel Illegal, States Can't Probe Military, Police by BeeBeeOoh(op): 8:28am On Nov 29, 2021
Festus Keyamo, minister of state for labour and employment, says the Lagos judicial panel on police brutality was “illegal and a waste of time”.

Keyamo made the comment on Sunday during an interview on Channels Television.

The minister said the Lagos state government, which set up the judicial panel, lacks the power to probe the conduct of police and military officers.

Keyamo said by the virtue of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), only the federal government can investigate the military and police

“I will not answer this question as a sitting minister, I will answer this question as senior advocate of Nigeria — a member of the inner bar — and so I’m entitled to my opinion. This is not the federal government opinion,” he said.

“For me, that panel was an illegal panel. It is totally illegal. All lawyers who are listening to me should go back and read to the Tribunal of Inquiry Act of Lagos state.

“It says that the governor will have power to inquire into the conduct of any person and chieftaincy matters and any matter that would promote the good of the public.

“However, any person there was defined in section 21 to mean public officers of the state. It is defined to mean somebody within the public service of the Lagos state or the local government as the case may be.

“However, if you look at section 21 again of the tribunal of inquiry law, it says that it has to be within the legislative competence of Lagos state.

“In other words, it is only a person over which whom the Lagos state has control that they can inquire into their conduct. If you don’t have control over me, you can’t inquire into my conduct.

“The policemen, the armed forces, the military are not officers of Lagos state. They are officers of the federal government.

“By virtue of the constitution, it is only the federal government that can control the conduct of policemen and the military. Lagos state cannot be in control, cannot legislate too regarding police matters and military matters.

“To inquire into the conduct of policemen and military, no state government can’t do that.”

Asked if the time spent on the judicial panels across the country is an exercise in futility, he responded in the affirmative.

In October 2020, the National Economic Council (NEC), under the leadership of Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, established judicial panels in states, including the federal capital territory (FCT), to investigate cases of police brutality.

The decision was announced during the #EndSARS protests, when youths took to the streets in different parts of the country to call for the disbandment of the special anti-robbery squad (SARS).

Politics › 2 Police Officers Killed In Anambra, Their Bodies Burnt, One Still Missing by BeeBeeOoh(op): 9:07pm On Nov 28, 2021
One officer is still missing, according to the police.

The police in Anambra State, Nigeria’s South-east, said two of their officers have been shot dead and their bodies burnt by their attackers.

One officer is still missing, according to the police.

The slain officers were traveling in a vehicle with five other officers and three civilian drivers when they were ambushed by gunmen on Thursday in some community in Anambra, the police spokesperson in the state, Ikenga Tochukwu, said in a statement on Saturday.

“In the attack two police officers were killed and their bodies were burnt while one of the officers is still missing,” said Mr Tochukwu, a deputy superintendent of police.

A clip circulating on WhatsApp showed the armed men strutting around the corpses of two officers in the middle of a tarred road. Close to the corpses, were some discarded car tires.

“ESN! ESN! ESN! We are going! We are going!” One of the armed men is heard saying in the clip, indicating that the attack may have been carried out by the pro-Biafra group, IPOB (ESN is an armed wing of IPOB).

He said the other officers “fought their way out of the ambush” and were also able to rescue two out of the three civilian drivers.

Mr Tochukwu said the other officers “fought their way out of the ambush” and were also able to rescue two out of the three civilian drivers.

He said the armed men attacked a rescue team, hurling improvised explosive devices at police vehicles.

Controversy over the killing of 20-year-old woman

Meanwhile, the residents of Azia Community in Ihiala Local Government Area, where the ambush occurred, are accusing the police of killing a 20-year-old woman, Chidimma Ezeanochie.

Tonna Nwabueze, the president-general of Azia General Assembly, said in a petition to the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, that some police officers who came to their community in an armoured vehicle opened fire at Miss Ezeanochie and her brother, killing her instantly, while the brother survived.

Mr Nwabueze, in his petition, was apparently referring to the police rescue operation in the community.

“About 100 meters from the site of this incident, the police equally opened fire on a Sienna Space Bus parked by a block industry,” he said.

The community described Miss Ezeanochie’s killing as “gruesome, wicked and totally unacceptable”, and is demanding justice from the police.

The police, in their reaction to the accusation, said, “Throughout the operation no innocent citizen, talk less of children were sighted in the area.”

“The peddlers of this misinformation anchored their claims on the fact that they saw an Armoured Personnel Carrier passing through Azia/Osumoghu junction when the alleged incident happened,” the police spokesperson said.

He said the Commissioner of Police in Anambra, Echeng Echeng, is saddened by Miss Ezeanochie’s killing and expressed his condolences to her family.

Mr Echeng said the police are working with other security agencies in the state and the communities “to put an end to insecurity in that part of the State and make sure such incident does not re-occur”.

Anambra, like other states in the South-east, has been plagued by violent killings over the agitation for an independent republic of Biafra which is championed by IPOB.

A soldier and four IPOB members were killed in October in the state during a deadly clash.

Anambra recently had a peaceful governorship election amidst the fear that IPOB was going to disrupt the poll.
