Politics › #EndSARS: Act On Judicial Panel Report - US Tells Buhari, Lagos State Government by BeeBeeOoh(op): 5:52pm On Nov 16, 2021
In a statement, the United States Consulate General in Lagos commended the work of the panel, describing it as a huge step forward in trying to make all those responsible for attacks on peaceful protesters to asnwer for their action.

he United States Government on Tuesday called on the Nigerian and Lagos State governments to adress alleged abuses pointed out by the report of the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry that looked into the violence surrounding the #EndSARS protest that took place in October 2020.

In a statement, the United States Consulate General in Lagos commended the work of the panel, describing it as a huge step forward in trying to make all those responsible for attacks on peaceful protesters to asnwer for their action.

The statement read, "The United States welcomes the conclusion of the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry with the transmission of its final report.

"We look forward to the Lagos State Government’s response as part of a process that represents an important mechanism of accountability regarding the #EndSARS protests and the events that took place near the Lekki Toll Gate on October 20, 2020.

"Those events led to serious allegations against some members of the security forces, and we look forward to the Lagos State and federal governments taking suitable measures to address those alleged abuses as well as the grievances of the victims and their families."

On Monday, the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry submitted a 309-paged report to the state government after months of sitting.

The report blamed the Nigerian Army and Nigeria Police Force for the killing of at least nine protesters and injury to others.

The panel also blamed security operatives for blocking ambulances from rescuing wounded protesters, leading to the deaths of many of them.

The report has since sparked outrage among Nigerians, who have called for the Lagos and federal governments to be held responsible for the killings.

Politics › Provision Of Education Opportunities For Herdsmen Will Curb Insecurity - Gumi by BeeBeeOoh(op): 2:01pm On Nov 15, 2021
Renowned Kaduna-based Islamic cleric, Sheikh Dr Abubakar Ahmad Gumi, has opined that with the provision of education opportunities to Fulani herdsmen at the grassroots, the raging insecurity in the country could be checked.

Sheikh Gumi, who on an inspection visit of the Sheikh Uthman Bin Fodio Centre at Kagarko Grazing Reserve Kohoto Village, Kagarko Local Government Area of Kaduna State donated by Sultan Bello Mosque Foundation, stated that education is the best approach to help widen the knowledge of the Fulani herdsmen against involving themselves to insecurity in the country.

He explained, “The construction of the school is an example to the three tiers of government, corporate organizations and individuals. Instead of spending billions on hardware, spend it on schools. I have spoken to lots of them, they have agreed to lay down their weapons and embrace education.”

Gumi further explained that the centre contains six classrooms, which would be operational for 24 hours every day, stressing that the herdsmen rear cattle in the morning, come back and study in the evening.

He assured that the school would run primary and secondary schools at intervals, saying that the Fulani herdsmen would be encouraged to take education seriously.

Sheikh Gumi stated that the Centre has a hospital as well as an economic booster on showing them how to use foliage to feed their animals, pointing out that if such Centres are replicated in every part of the country, Nigeria would be in peace.

He explained that the majority of the Fulani herdsmen are not involved in banditry, saying that if herdsmen are terrorists, there would be problems in the country.

Gumi stated that though the construction project of the centre is still ongoing, the three tiers of government should come in and partner on training the herdsmen on how they can be economically viable.

He said, “The moment most of the Fulani herdsmen are educated, you find among them doctors, engineers, nurses and other professionals who will not go into acts that are contrary to the laws of the land but the country will be better for it.”

He stated that teachers would be taken from Kaduna to the centre, stressing that some of the students would be taught entrepreneurship in order to be self-reliant when they finish their studies.

Politics › Bandits Sack Sokoto Villages, Appoints District Heads In Those Communities by BeeBeeOoh(op): 1:49pm On Nov 15, 2021
Story baseless, unfounded ― Police

Apart from imposing levies on those who did not flee from their villages due to incessant attacks by bandits, the bandits have now usurped power and have begin to appoint District Heads in those communities in Sokoto state, North West Nigeria.

The police, however, denied the development and described the story as baseless and unfounded.

A native of one of the affected communities in the state,Idris Muhammad Gobir told the VOA Hausa Service in an interview, that as of now, the bandits have appointed 2 District Heads in the Sabon Birni zone of Sokoto state.

According to Idris, “yesterday the bandits leader celebrated the Maulud in Makwaruwa, where he declared himself the District Head.

“The event took place in the presence of the bona fide District Head.

“But when they asked if he had any objection, he, Dan Sani, paid allegiance to the bandits leader who usurped power .”

Similarly, “in Gangara town the bandits summoned a meeting which was attended by all the inhabitants and the bandits.

“They selected Dan Kwaro and he is now the District head of that town.”

“He was in the town on Thursday and ordered mosques to re open.He directed that the inhabitants should stop going outside the town for prayers, that they should be performing their prayers in the town.”

“They control the local justice system and others. He ordered that markets be reopened next Tuesdays,” he said.

Another resident in the Eastern part of Sokoto, Bashir Altine Guyawa, told the VOA Hausa that even before the bandits appointed District Heads in the area, for long, they were in control in that zone and called the shots.

He said “from Dama where there was an encounter between the bandits and security agents, up to Zango and Gatawa, the bandits are in total control in these areas and dictate daily affairs.”

” So even if they announced the appointment of District Heads or not, they’ve already established their presence and they are in control. So anybody who had traditional authority can no longer exercise that power, ” he said.

Commenting on the consequences of this development, a security expert, Detective Auwal Bala Durumi Iya ,said the situation is capable of making the people to lose hope on whether the government is capable of rescuing them from the clutches of these bandits.

” Secondly, they ( bandits )can be able to recruit from those who are not part of them, whether they like it or not.”

” Thirdly, this will show the world that the bandits are now strong enough to annex an area and impose their kind of authority,” he said.

The Nigeria Police, however, in a statement signed by the Sokoto Command ‘s PPRO, ASP Sanusi Abubakar, said investigation has revealed that the story was baseless.

The Command said it has taken stringent measures to unravel the source of the story, adding that there were plans under the Hadarin Daji by the military and police to launch an operation in those places inhabited by bandits, with a view to restoring law and order.

Politics › Ohaneze: We're Building Alliance With The North To Achieve Igbo Presidency by BeeBeeOoh(op): 7:45am On Nov 15, 2021
Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Igbo sociocultural association, says an Igbo presidency in 2023 will put a stop to agitations and quest for secession in the south-east.

The association is different from Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the more popular group headed by George Obiozor.

Speaking in an interview with PUNCH, Okechukwu Isiguzuro, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide secretary-general, said denying the Igbo the presidency will further increase Biafra agitations and threaten Nigeria’s unity.

He said the group is already discussing with northern elders and youths, adding that “a new alliance” is being built with the north to achieve the goal of an Igbo presidency.

“2023 Igbo presidency is very feasible and any attempts to derail the project anchoring it on the activities of the secessionist agitations in south-east is not only devilish but mischievously wicked,” Isiguzuro was quoted as saying.

“The consequences of denying the Igbo the 2023 presidency will strengthen Biafra agitations and it will sink Nigeria’s corporate existence and threaten its unity.

“The expectation of Igbo to achieve the desired results of having an Igbo succeed President Buhari in 2023 is ongoing.

“The only way to end the secessionist movements and stop them from armed struggle is for the federal government to opt for a political solution to the problem of Biafra agitations, which Igbo presidency is one of it. A Nigerian president of Igbo extraction will end the activities of IPOB.

“Secondly, there are ongoing talks with the northern elders and the Arewa chieftains, especially the youths. We believe that the discussions through sincere engagements will change the northern fears over 2023 Igbo presidency.

“One of the practical steps to be taken seriously is the engagement of the other sections of the country especially the north.

“We are building up a new alliance with the north, but definitely, we will achieve this lofty position through building consensus and confidence.”

Isiguzuro added that only two people from the Igbo extraction had declared their interest in contesting the presidential seat and that the group is expecting more people, particularly from the ruling APC, to join in the race.
