The tithe of a thing was a tradition under the old covenant. We aren't under the old covenant and it doesn't applies to us today. Even the tithing wasn't in pecuniary terms. Many Nigerian pastors are just feeding on their gullible followers that haven't taken time to study the scriptures.

Here's what Deuteronomy 14: 23-29 (NIV) says

23 Eat the tithe of your grain, new wine and olive oil, and the firstborn of your herds and flocks in the presence of the LORD your God at the place he will choose as a dwelling for his Name, so that you may learn to revere the LORD your God always. 24. In summarizing this old practice, we are meant to eat our tithe.
