The Sinaloa cartel employs skilled chemists who have the expertise to synthesise fentanyl by combining and manipulating precursor chemicals. Some of these “cooks” work in secret underground labs located on ranches owned by cartel members or in smaller houses in and around Culiacán. In a single day, a cartel cook can manufacture more than 100,000 pills containing fentanyl, potentially worth hundreds of thousands of dollars at street value.
