@omohayek, @shadeyinka...nice to actually see an intellectual discussion on the forum other than the vile vituperations and juvenile tantrums that pervades the forum lately.

Maybe there was also an international and local conspiracy against PMB in 2011. These folks should just take responsibility and move on. Blaming everyone else but themselves is totally immature and delusional.

Yhhh, if you think you've found someone to play a pointless game of throwing insults with you, you'll have to keep looking. I'm not that childish. Those I will respond to from here on are those with reasonable rebuttals not people that have no point to make yet want to shout from the rafters.

Have a wonderful day. At least you've been noticed.
I will refrain from making a contribution to the Biafra discussion, but I must observe that you are incredibly matured, intelligent, articulate and well-read. I wish we could have more of such discussions on NL covering all topics (politics, economics, sports, etc) rather than the infantile tantrums (afonja, ipob, zombie, wailer, etc) being thrown on the forum everyday.

Reading your submissions is really quite refreshing. Folks like you are proof that all hope is not lost for Nigeria (or Biafra).

Politics › Re: PDP Attacks Buhari:'Ur Newly Launched Economic Recovery Plan Is Dead On Arrival' by Bevista:
The essence of oppositon - among other things - is to provide alternative ideas to governance. Ok, it's coming 2 years late, but is it not better late than never? So much written to criticize the plan but yet no suggestion on what would be a better plan.

On the issue of debt, one would note that 90% was inherited from previous administrations. I can understand the argument that the depreciating exchange rate has increased the amount needed to service the foreign component of the debt.

On the 'failed' anti- corruption war, it's a bit difficult to place the blame. Is it because the EFCC is not building a water-tight case or is because we still have a compromised judiciary? I can still remember how a Nigerian judge acquitted an accused of 177 count charges. The same accused person pleaded guilty to just 3 count charges in a foreign court
Politics › Re: Reno Omokri Salutes Osinbajo After Sack Of 9 Aviation Directors by Bevista: 5:24pm On Feb 25, 2017
Without any doubts, PYO is a dynamic and hands-on leader.
---
But Reno is going to find a way to compare this to PMB but he won't find it worthy to compare it to his "heroic" benefactor.
Politics › Re: Buhari’s Anti-corruption War Is Dead – Reno by Bevista:
Is it really ideal to call this crusade "Buhari's anti-corruption war"? The impression I usually get when I hear stuff like this is that we are cool with corruption or that we'd be happy to see the war fail.
---
Back to the "Gift" issue, I have a few questions: (1) Is PMB the only client to this lawyer? (2) Was the gift given on behalf of PMB? (3) Why are we not pointing fingers to all the many other clients of this lawyer? (4) Why are we still so fixated on PMB even when the lawyer has come out openly to claim his gift had nothing to do with the president?
---
I think PMB is a victim of his own integrity. The SGF was accused of N200m contract racketeering. PMB himself accused of N500k bribe. He was accused of having N30m in his account when he claimed to borrow to buy nomination form. Now let's even assume for one moment that all these allegations are true, it only goes to demonstrate that PMB's ills are a drop in the ocean compared to others.
---
Let's put things in perspective here. A certain lawyer claimed that N74m found in his account was legal fees paid to him by Fayose. Do we find that alarming? No! (but N500k is). Just a few years ago, contract racketeering was done in billions of $$$. That is still not alarming to some people (but N200m is). I come from a state where a PA to the governor publicly celebrated his first N10b. It is not alarming to some that a PA could have N10b but it is alarming that a former army General and president has N30m in his account. PMB is, indeed, a victim of his own integrity. This is not suggesting that we should condone corruption in any guise but jut to provide some perspective.
---
Reno and Ben Bruce have a habit of dissing the president. But somehow, they never say anything about the actions of their "heroic" benefactor. So much for commonsense!
Business › Re: Naira Gains On Parallel Market For Four Consecutive Days, Now N480/$ by Bevista: 8:20am On Feb 25, 2017
Truth234:
There is nothing like flooding the market with dollars, you just need to understand how the CBN works. Currently, the institution is generating about $2.4 billion-$2.8 billion in forex a month, and since this new policy was introduced a total of $610 million ($370+$240) has been auctioned.

Meaning, the CBN is saving more than its spending, and don't forget our output is near all time low 1.6mbpd but once the trans forcado pipeline is open by the second quarter, we should be able to up our production to about 1.8mbpd-1.9mbpd and increase our revenue generation even more.

Once the manufacturers can access forex at a moderate rate, the consumer prices (inflation rate) will cool and job creation will increase. So will consumer spending and gradually the economy will once again come alive. There is no point saving all the money while the economy dies of scarcity.
Your first paragraph gives the impression that the CBN is only spending about $600m from $2.8b. Kindly note that prior to the new policy, the apex bank was already spending a lot to fund critical sectors of the economy like fuel imports, equipment & machinery for agriculture and manufacturing, raw materials for critical sectors, military hardware, etc. So you see, when you add this new monthly spend to the existing spending, then the NET balance left for the Reserves might not be that much.
---
Secondly, considering that monthly FAAC sharing is less than N500b (about $1.5b), I'm curious to know whether, indeed, the country gets as much as $2.8b from crude oil sales.

I'm not sure you actually read those links. If you did, then you didn't pay attention. If you did, then you would have noticed a recurring theme.
---
First of all, as it has been noted by @Mynd44, there is no quote of the President saying those exact words. The content of those articles were completely inconsistent with the title. Secondly, all the proper sources quoted from NAN. Is it not curious that the president made such a statement in an open campaign ground in Owerri, yet it was only NAN that carried the original story.
---
@KingOfAmebo tried but I dare him to show me any other credible tabloid that carried that news independently without quoting from NAN. They all carried the story because it was sensational and would attract readership, but they were very careful to include the source (NAN). That way they would exonerate themselves if push comes to shove.

Unfortunately for you, Buhari's economic cure has been much worse than the disease!

His refusal to allow the naira depreciate and by that , the defacto pegging of the naira brought about the dollar scarcity will has has devastated the economy.

This uneconomic peg has also forced foreign investors to flee and led to a collapse in non oil exports.

Its time Buhari goes home and lest I forget, take Emefiele with him.
I am not a big fan of the government's fiscal/monetary policy on FX. I believe they should be a lot more flexible than they are.
---
However, I also realize that macroeconomic issues are not single-dimentional. The CBN is always trying to balance a lot of factors and they will make choices that has the least NET consequences on the economy.
---
For instance, devaluation will immediately reduce the size of our capital market (in dollar terms) making it cheaper for outsiders to swoop on our companies. Devaluation puts the government in a difficult position regarding fuel imports (they have to either increase price or increase subsidy). My point, basically, is that this issues are not as easy as it seems.
Business › Re: Nigeria-china Trade Declines By 79% In 2016 by Bevista: 9:44am On Feb 19, 2017
According to the Ambassador, Nigeria-China trade relations was $15 billion in 2015, but has since dropped to $3.1 billion in 2016. Pushing Nigeria down to fourth position from the second largest Africa-China trade partner.
Unfortunately, this does not tell the whole story. I would like to know the Import and Export component of such trade. If trade has gone down because Nigerians are IMPORTING less from China now and beginning to look inwards for self-sufficiency, then I think it is a positive rather than negative.
---
If the Chinese wants more trade, let them send money this way.

ThinkSmarter:
True federalism is good but the north will always kick against it cuz of the oil in the Niger Delta.
They will only agree if they eventually find oil in Bauchi and lake Chad basin .
True federalism will lead to a healthy competition amongst regions for development, and it help Nigeria to develop faster.
Over the last 16 years of democratic rule, OBJ did 8yrs, GEJ did +5yrs. So, you see, South had controlled the country for +13yrs, yet they did not consider restructuring the country. But, somehow, you find it convenient to blame the North for your problems.
---
Until when Nigerians begin to look at issues for what they are rather than dissect every issue on the alter of sentiments (tribe, religion, party, etc), we will never make progress.

This idea getting popular sadly with former politicians.
Quite sad. Apparently, when they are active in office, nobody wants to "rock the boat". The "free allocations" they get from the Center freezes their brains.
---
Is there any National Assembly member (North or South) who would be willing to champion this course? Yet, that is the arm of government that has the powers to legislate on the restructuring. Even when the idea of a National Conference is mooted, our legislatures are so scared that their powers will be usurped.
---
Sadly, as you rightly noted, it's when they are no more beneficiaries of the system that they suddenly "realize" that the system is poorly structured.

This fact is so obvious for any discerning person. How successive governments try to ignore this obvious fact is beyond me.

Why would the FG not decentralize Power transmission and distribution? Why control all the waterways and maritime fronts in the states? Why control all the minerals beneath the ground? Why not let States or Regions take up a lot of these responsibilities and develop at their own pace. It is so obvious the the FG is grossly failing?
---
Instead of being pro-active and start restructuring the country now, we will wait until circumstances are forced on us before we act. Typically, by that time, things have so gone out of hand and we start politicizing and blaming our perceived enemies.
---
Africans need to show that we are, indeed, capable of governing ourselves. We are where we are because of the actions and inactions of the past. Our future also depends largely on the (in)actions of today. We can't Pray ourselves out of this. No country ever did.

The early signs show that PYO might just be a better administrator than PMB. But contrary to what Reno might want to suggest, I think this not an indictment of the president but rather an endorsement for the old man for choosing such a capable Vice.

While, at this point I would prefer PYO over PMB, I must emphasize that I have absolutely no regrets over PMB. Given the same circumstances that occurred in 2015, I would (10 times out of 10) still choose PMB over GEJ.

The likes of Reno have zero knowledge about macroeconomics or economic cycles. It's like blaming Obama who started his administration with the Global Financial Crisis and bank failures, without any thought to all the financial rascality that led to the bubble in the first place.

Just need further clarification on the above statement. What if the return of stolen funds is not voluntary? For instance, say the looter is taken to court and judgement is pronounced that funds/assets should be forfeited to govt, would that pass as "voluntary return"?

2 million Buharis cannot save Nigeria! We are chronically corrupt. It's who we are and it's our way of life.

We throng out with drums to celebrate those who have haemorrhaged and raped our collective wealth. We defend our corrupt "brothers and sisters" anytime there is an attempt to call them to answer. We even start a campaign of "Bring back corruption" simply because all the goodies that are byproducts of corruption are no longer there.

Little wonder why we still live in a society that is reminiscent of cave men. Poverty, Darkness, Diseases, Lack of basic social amenities, etc defines us.

Make no mistake to blame this on leaders, for leaders are merely products of society. A corrupt society births corrupt leaders! From civil servants to police officers to judges to elected officials to lecturers to students to pastors to artisans to everyone...there is corruption everywhere. It's a cultural thing, it's a Way of Life! Try being different and you are called "mugu", dumb or asked if you want to be the next Jesus.

To show how primitively corrupt we are, we stash our loot as cash. No thought of even putting the money in the banking system where it would (at least) serve as loans to businesses and entrepreneurs.

Unfortunately, this narrative has been going on for sometime now. I really don't know if this is a product of ignorance or just a way of discrediting the efforts of the administration.
---
If I may ask, how much has been recovered and how far can that solve Nigeria's problems? The FG gave aggregate bailout funds of over N500B to the states, yet that did not even scratch the problem. FG even gave another round of funds (over N500B) to states as refunds from debts over-deductions, yet it still looks like nothing is happening.
---
The fact is that most of us have no inkling about the enormity of the challenges facing the country. Sink N20Trillion into this economy today, and I can assure you we will still not make much progress (come to think of it, N20T is just equivalent to South Africa's annual budget). This country (economy) is suffering from decades of "Rape" and neglect.
---
The recovered funds is less than N200B and yet we keep talking about the FG not needing to borrow, or how it should end recession. For some reasons, you lot say nothing about how the actions of these looters progressively led to this economic state.
