There are irrefutable evidence that the overall number of deaths in the US and the UK have not significantly gone higher than its statistical average. Most of those deaths are now simply being reclassified as Covid-19 related deaths...and this comes from the CDC and NHS memo to doctors on how to report Covid-19 (check the first screenshot to see the NHS memo)

The second screenshot below reflects data extracted from National Office of Statistics (UK). You can see that there has been no disproportionate increase in the overall number deaths on a monthly basis during this pandemic. I'll give you a little analogy - If you have 100 green apples and then you decide to color 20 of them red, how many apples do you now have? You can make noise about having 20 red apples but in the end you still got 100 apples.

According to the CDC website, during the 2017/2018 flu season, more than 40 million Americans contracted the flu and over 61,000 died. There was absolutely no media hysteria, no lockdowns. In Nigeria, more than 50,000 die from malaria every year and we still get on with our lives. Why the fvck you shut down the entire economic system because of 3 deaths (That was the number before the shutdown began)?

They do the tests, ask you to wait for 24 hours, and after 24 hours if you test negative, they give you a card to be able to go out. Now that card is what you would use to go to the markets and different places.

It's just a bloody victim mentality and nothing else. There is no leader that is committed to developing his territory and another external entity will tell him not to do so. Rwanda is a good example.

Commendable as this is, but there is a "Moral Hazard" angle to this. African leaders cannot keep borrowing money from others, abuse those funds and then turn around to ask for debt forgiveness. Just in 2005, the Paris Club wrote off $18bn of Nigeria's debt.

Africa needs to grow up and stop always behaving like a child who is incapable of taking responsibility for herself!

I've thought about this too. But I guess, it depends largely on what happens in the oil market going forward (considering oil sales account for over 90% of our FX earnings).

If oil prices stay below $30 for a significant amount of time, then the CBN will start excluding import items on it's list and limiting the FX rations it gives to Banks and BDCs. Banks will place further limits on FX transactions. All these will push the price in the parallel market to #450 - #500 range.

I understand the government is trying to borrow from some international finance organizations. The FX inflows from such borrowing will help buy some time in managing the the exchange rate...but not for long.

At the level of individuals and private enterprise, if the lockdown continues, there will be more economic hardship leading to protests & crime. If things degenerate quickly, expect the government to rollout the police and military to defend their battered political interests. At this point, things could get really messy as citizens defy the odds because they must survive.

Things are about to get really messy on the economic side if things don't improve immediately and the economy is back to running. People need to go back to their private hustle else all hell will break lose.

....expect political turmoil, refugees, revolutions, crackdowns, maybe terrorism. All of these might happen on a scale we haven’t seen for decades.

500k people dying from smoking does not call for a lockdown or government intervention; nobody forces you to smoke, smoking is a very voluntary action. It is also stated on the packs that you may live longer if you don't smoke. Cigarette companies are heavily taxed and there is no sense in banning it. I'm sure you or one of your friends smoke and even if you don't, you drink; and I am very sure you were one of those that raised their voices when a certain minister said alcohol should be banned in the whole country.

30k people die from road accidents doesn't mean everyone dies as they're entering the road. Most of those deaths are caused by over speeding which is another voluntary action by the driver.

50k die from malaria does not mean everyone that gets malaria dies. There's a cure for malaria and there are an array of drugs today that clears the parasite within hours.

40k maternal mortality rate arise from biological complications during childbirth and pregnant women patronizing local traditional midwives.

All these you have mentioned are either very avoidable problems or problems with a working solution. That being said, the government has programs in place to sensitise and educate masses concerning these problems you have mentioned.

Now, the corona virus has no cure, it is not a disease you get voluntarily, infact you won't even know you have it until you develop symptoms.

Due to it's very infectious nature, it is only logical a lockdown is imposed.

That aside, can you see how bodies are pilling up? Malaria kills 30k every year but covid-19 has killed over 50k within 3 months.

You will be very inconsiderate to say the lockdown is not merited.

Good points raised here. However, when I referred to the malaria deaths, I was talking about the Nigerian figures alone and not the global figures. WHO puts the global figures around +500k per year.

According to the official CDC website, there were of over 50 million infections during the 2017/2018 Flu season. Total deaths were estimated at over 60k. This is just for the US alone. You can read about it here. In the 2018/2019 flu season, there were over 40,000 deaths in the US alone. Still, there was no shutdown whatsoever.

BTW, just a few weeks ago Bill Gates was having a reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything) session. You can read it here to see how he was justifying complete lockdowns. You will also read how he talks about vaccines as the only option to allow people to get back to their normal lives.
