PRESS BRIEFING BY THE ACTING DIRECTOR DEFENCE INFORMATION BRIGADEIER GENERAL JOHN AGIM ON THE ACTIVITIES OF CLEARANCE OPERATION IN LOKOJA KOGI STATE ON 24 NOVEMBER 2018

1. I am happy to be in your midst this morning on the occasion of press briefing on the activities of Clearance Operation in Kogi State which is being conducted by the combined forces of the military and other security agencies. This is my maiden Media chat since the inauguration of Clearance Operation which is now operating under the auspices of Operation 777. Operation 777 was launched on 8 October 2018 by Defence Headquarters to re-jig our existing operations all over the country in order to close gaps between them, and to avoid criminals and bandits escaping from one operation theatre to other. Clearance Operation has significantly achieved the set objectives for which Op 777 was set up.

2. Prior to the launch of Op 777 there was a large scale security threats in Kogi State. These included armed robbery, insurgent activities, boundary disputes, cattle rustling, political thuggery, cultism and kidnapping among others. The security threats had led to loss of lives, destruction of properties and disruption of socio-economic activities. The 3 senatorial areas of the State have their own peculiar nature of crime. The Eastern Senatorial District witnessed large scale destruction of lives and properties occasioned by ethnic rivalry, Western Senatorial District had incessant kidnappings and herdsmen/farmers clashes while Central Senatorial Zone was faced with assassination and kidnappings. With the commencement of Op 777 the troops put up offensive posture and embarked on series of operations that denied the hoodlums and criminals freedom of actions within the JOA.

3. Kogi State is strategic to the security and socio-economic calculation of Nigeria because it is a gateway between the northern and southern part of Nigeria. It also shares boundaries with nine states and FCT, as such, the state is susceptible to spill over effect of violence and other diverse influences from these contiguous states. There are 8 operation sectors within the JOA and each sector covers 2 to 3 LGAs. Each sector has established Sector Headquarters and 2 sub-sectors for administrative expediency. There are also 3 Senatorial zones in Kogi state; Kogi Central, East and West. For effective coordination of this exercise, all sectors were collapsed and a Battalion established in each of the senatorial zones, while a Brigade HQs is located at Central zone which oversees the Battalions. 91 Brigade located at Irepene, 911 Battalion at Odo Ape and 912 Battalion at Oku Obayin, while 913 Battalion is at Bassa.

4. In addition, the troops of Clearance Operation provide security to Key Points and Vulnerable Points such as Geregu Power Plant, Dangote Cement Factory Obajana and 2 strategic bridges at Jamata and Itobe. There are also escort duties on daily bases for high profile personalities plying routes within JOA. Troops also provide assistance to NEMA officials as well as monitoring distribution of relief materials at IDP Camps within the State.

5. Through the renew vigor and determination of the troops in this special operation, relative peace have been restored and hence, the troops dominate the operating environment, thereby creating safe and conducive atmosphere for socio-economic activities to thrive. Local traders, motorists, travelers and residents of villages/settlements in these general areas are now conducting their business unmolested. The relative peace and security being witnessed was made possible through joint operations and synergy of efforts by the security agencies and cooperative posture of the State Government, locals and other well meaning citizens of Kogi State.

6. It is noteworthy to mention that the intensity of offensive operation across the state has led to the recovering of some illegal arms and ammunition across the Clearance Operation’s JOA. These included:

a. 7 Locally fabricated guns.
b. 1 AK47 Rifle
c. 2 Magazines.
d. 45 Rounds of Assorted ammunition.

7. During the period under review, 20 notorious criminals were arrested, which included Mr Eleme Salihu, the kidnapper kingpin at Itobe in Ofu LGA of the State. The troops also foiled several kidnapping attempts and intensified continuous confidence building through patrols, show of force, blocking operations, as well as cordon and search. This strategy has yielded positive results with arrest of high profile suspects and recovering of weapons. Clearance Op also deters activities of illegal bunkering through routine patrols of pipelines within the JOA.

8. Ladies and Gentlemen, let me reassure members of the general public of our determination to protect lives and properties of law abiding citizens. Likewise, members of the public are enjoined to be security conscious and desist from any act that could breach peace and security. Youths should shun political thuggery, violent crimes, banditry and cultism.

9. Permit me at point to commend the media for your cooperation and support to Clearance Op. This support should be sustained in order to achieve a crime-free society and state. While pledging that our troops will continue to be professional in the discharge of their duties, law abiding citizens should endeavour to give timely information to security agencies for prompt action.

Officers and soldiers slain in Metele have identity. Their efforts and sacrifices should not be in vain. The authorities must do what they must to prosecute the unnecessary war in the northeast to a logical conclusion. Rest in peace, Maj. (Dr) Alobi Nsor and companion.

The voice of Jacob, and hand of Esau. The ambush was deadly, and very unusual. By now, every commander on the frontline knows that BHT can wear army uniforms. What I believe happened was that the unit was contacted by what they thought was MNJTF and fell right into the ambush set.

Reminds me of how Bin Laden was being fed with intel from the Pakistani Intelligence for years. It also makes sense that as we push BHTs back from the Lake Chad region, the Chadians either allow them in, or help push back against Nigeria.

You just love going in circles while convincing yourself that you are saying something that makes sense right?
I mean, for the love of God, i just said the country is not worth dying for since the leadership doesn't care about the ppl, i said soldiers should down tools and walk if they aren't being well taken care of, yet you just literally said the exact same thing.
And if they are not willing to, they shouldn't be there, at least they would be alive, in case you still don't get it, them losing the battle wasn't the issue here, them dying is, get it? I got upset and sad that they died. How many times do i gotta repeat this? We lost a lot of soldiers we shouldn't have lost.
wow, well that's it for me on this subject.
But next time you disagree with anything i write, respond without insult, that shouldn't be too hard, i don't know you and we never had issues before, so no need for all that.
Please Where did I insult you ... undecided telling you should stop spitting what you don't know of ... huh has become an insult, whereas it's an actual fact.

Why is our T72 getting blown up by rpg 7? Does BHT have new weapon systems? I saw a T72, that cocked off, the turret blown off......rpg7 isnt meant to defeat a T72.
With or without the ERA added amour the RPG can destroy the T72, depending on where it is been hit. But I doubt if it was an RPG hit.

These MBT where a bonded when the attack started, reliable source has it that most of these tanks are not operational worthy.

I've restrained myself from insulting you, but for some reason you don't seem understand never to insult others without being insulted.
How big of a punk are ya?
I said what i said, if it pisses you off, jump off a fvking bridge you silly illiterate, who the heck are you to question my intelligence.
The hell is wrong with you guys talking to others as if you own them?
What such military base are you talking about huh? A soldier , according to info posted on here, said they were caught off-guard, but you are here insisting they weren't, okay.
Regardless whether they were or weren't, that won't bring back the dead.
So get off my case dude.
You had to go back and read comments that was posted several pages back? really?
And why the heck would i wanna join the military in a semi-failed country where the leadership don't give a darn about the people? Show me why Nigeria is worth dying for. Look around you, what benefit are the people reaping for being Nigerians? Nada.
Being a soldier wasn't by force, if you choose to enlist, be ready for the blood and tears, it's not for everyone, don't insult others because they weren't in the military, that's just stupid.
My uncle was gunned down over there months ago while in uniform with pictures of his corpse all over the internet, you sit there and talk to me about some bs. Each family that has made sacrifice knows what they've lost.
Having obsolete equipment is an issue, i never denied that, no one did.
Now your excuse was that they lost because they had low morale? okay, tomorrow if would be because they had flat tires.
Keep on with the excuses, let's see who that helps.
You? you wanna lecture me about comprehension? This must be a joke.

We don't have a professional Army, we have some professional units within the Army, that's about it.
Watch the video and see the disarray, without anyone being in charge of the situation. What kind of military do we have where soldiers can just up and walk away after an attack, who's in charge etc.
But hey, let's blame me and my lack of comprehension.
After all you claimed to have "shot a commission". This is the guy questioning my intelligence. Stay in your lane chief .
So don't spiit what you don't know of huh

War are not combat games you guys think it his; even the developed countries who are fighting ISIS & Taliban are not finding it easy, terrorism is still as strong and present there.

If these soldiers are not giving the right morale, equipment and environmental it's going to get worst than these with the new alliance terrorist are forming.

If you guys like type all your Jagons; it will never change anything. Those soldiers are not willing to die like fowls anymore for these country.

I don't understand, are there no officers like lieutenants, captains or majors in that place that could have stopped the soldiers from videoing and saying all what they were saying?
huh
That shows a lot of disorder, gross misconduct between ranks and files of order and weakened moral in the army. Probably they all fled leaving them behind, just saying.

These video is over 2 months ago.

bless you.
That's what i just said, have people on watch and on patrols etc, but some people thought i watched too much movies, unreal, this is basic common sense
Not the first time news sources has quoted soldiers saying they were caught unaware, that's lack of discipline, you can't be caught unaware in a war zone, no one said it's easy, i keep stressing that point.
hundreds of terrorists just don't appear from thin air.
How does this not piss people off
Your problem goes beyond comprehension. So you think for such a big military base there are no patrols and observation post/towers. They where simply overrun with obsolete equipment to defend themselves, soldiers with already weakened moral.

You've been shouting hundreds of terrorists don't appear from thin air and dissappear after overrunning a base. What happens to proper equipment to fight back, soldiers welfare..etc without all these forget we can't win these war. It will always be a step forward and few backwards. If it pisses you off, please come join the army and see the hell the guys are going through. undecided
