HORRORIZON:
Boko Haram jihadists have killed 53 soldiers and farmers in three days of attacks in northeastern Nigeria, security sources said Tuesday, in a new show of force ahead of February elections in the West African country.
Despite the government’s insistence that Boko Haram is near defeat, the group has recently carried out a string of major attacks on military and civilian targets.
President Muhammadu Buhari, seeking re-election in February, faces widespread criticism over his security record as soldiers based in the northeast regularly complain of fatigue and insufficient supplies of food and arms.
The Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), a Boko Haram splinter group, killed at least 44 soldiers in attacks on three military bases at the weekend, according to security sources.
Of those, at least 43 were killed on Sunday in Metele, a remote village near the border with Niger, according to a military officer who requested anonymity.
“Our troops were completely routed and the terrorists captured the base after heavy fighting,” he told AFP, adding that the base commander and three officers were among the dead.
A search was under way for survivors or further victims in the surrounding bush, he said.
A pro-government militiaman said the jihadists arrived on around 20 trucks and army air support did not arrive until after they had “invaded the base and looted the weapons”.
The same day, jihadists also launched a pre-dawn attack on a base in the town of Gajiram, some 80 kilometres (50 miles) north of the Borno state capital, Maiduguri.
Fighting lasted several hours, local residents told AFP.
And a soldier was killed in an attack Saturday on a base in Mainok, also in Borno state, the cradle of the Boko Haram movement, security sources said.
– Villages also attacked –
ISWAP asserted responsibility for the attacks in Metele and Mainok, claiming to have killed at least 42 soldiers in addition to carting away four tanks and other vehicles, according to the SITE Intelligence monitoring group.
In addition, Monday saw the latest in a string of attacks on villages, usually carried out to pillage food and abduct civilians used as fighters or forced to marry jihadists.
The jihadists have accused farmers and loggers of passing information to the military.
Armed with guns and machetes, jihadists killed nine farmers and abducted 12 others in the Mammanti village in Borno state, locals told AFP on Tuesday.
The jihadists came on bicycles, said Usman Kaka, a farmer who escaped. “They just opened fire on us and continued to fire as we fled,” Kaka said.
Village chief Muhammad Mammanti said the assailants had hacked “three people who resisted being abducted”.
Also on Monday, seven women were snatched while working in fields near the city of Bama, according to militiamen fighting alongside army soldiers.
In an attack on Mammanti last week, jihadists stole hundreds of heads of cattle.
The surge in attacks on military targets suggests that hardliners within ISWAP have taken the upper hand after internal divisions, observers say.
More than 27,000 people have died since the start of the Boko Haram insurgency in 2009, and 1.8 million remain homeless.

We lost some good men but I think these news agencies are inflating the casualty figure.

PRESS BRIEFING BY THE ACTING DIRECTOR DEFENCE INFORMATION BRIGADIER GENERAL JOHN AGIM ON THE ACTIVITIES OF OPERATION 777 ON 19 NOVEMBER 2018 AT THE HEADQUARTERS 1 DIVISION NIGERIAN ARMY KADUNA

PROTOCOL
1. It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to this briefing on activities of the Operation WHIRL PUNCH being conducted by the troops of 1 Division Nigerian Army (NA). This operation is part of the Operation 777, which is being conducted and coordinated simultaneously nationwide under the auspices of the Defence Headquarters. Prior to the launch of Op 777, terrorists and criminals devised different means of evading ongoing operations in different theatres of operations. However, since the commencement of Op 777 on 8 October 2018, significant and modest operational successes have been recorded across the nation. Under Operation WHIRL PUNCH, 1 Division NA is tasked to provide security and restore normalcy along Kaduna – Abuja Expressway and Birnin Gwari and its environs as well as Niger State, which were hitherto devastated by the activities of bandits, kidnappers, armed robbers and cattle rustlers.

2. In preparation for the conduct of the operations, additional platforms, establishment of new military/Police formations/units and injection of more troops were carried out by the Defence Headquarters to ensure the success of this operation. There is Nigerian Army Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Birnin Gwari, which will soon metamorphose into 98 Bn in line with 2016 NA Order Of Battle (ORBAT). The Nigerian Air Force also plan to establish FOB to support Operation WHIRL PUNCH in Birnin Gwari general area, Niger State and the entire operation WHIRL PUNCH Area of Responsibility. The troops of 1 Division NA, Nigerian Air Force aircrafts, Police and other security agencies are conducting series of raids, ambushes, patrols, road blocks and air strikes against the identified camps/hideouts of bandits, kidnappers and other criminal elements within the operational areas. The general areas where our troops operate are characterised by thick forests such as the Kamuku, Kuduru, Birnin Gwari and Alawa Forests; the area also have several high grounds, which bandits and kidnappers use as staging areas and camps to perpetrate their heinous acts. To surmount these terrain challenges, we have also devised ingenious ways of deploying our troops and conducting operations.

3. So far, in this operation, 14 notorious bandits, cattle rustlers and kidnappers have been neutralised. Likewise several assorted sophisticated arms, ammunition and large herds of cattle have been recovered from the bandits, kidnappers and cattle rustlers.

4. A total of 18 AK47 rifles, 2 pistols, 3 mobile phones, 1 motorola, large cache’ of ammunition and 32 Motorcycles have been recovered. The troops also recovered over 331 cows from rustlers in Birnin Gwari area and 132 cows in Birnin Yero areas respectively. Along the Kaduna – Abuja Expressway 49 cows and 42 sheep have been recovered. All the recovered animals were handed over to their screened and profiled owners. Additionally, a total of 31 persons (18 Children and 13 Adults) were rescued from kidnappers within the Area of Operation. During this period also 5 bandits and 2 informants were arrested and they are currently assisting the security agencies in ongoing investigation. Unfortunately 2 soldiers were wounded and are currently receiving treatment at military hospital in Kaduna. Two civilian vigilante assisting troops in the operation were also killed in action by bandit’s fire.

5. Through these special operations, relative peace have been restored and hence, the troops dominate the operating environment, thereby creating safe and conducive atmosphere for socio-economic activities to thrive. It is evident that, now the local traders, motorists, residents of villages/settlements in these general areas are conducting their businesses mostly unmolested. The returned of relative peace and security was made possible through joint operations and synergy of efforts by the security agencies and cooperative posture of the locals and vigilante’ groups.

6. Let me also address a recent allegation of killing 74 cows belonging to Fulanis at Riyawa in Sabon Birni area. The Riyawa general area has been notorious as a den of bandits, cattle rustlers and kidnappers. Severally, troops had encounters with the bandits who use the difficult terrain and knowledge of the ground to escape. On 17 November 2018, based on intelligence, troops conducted a raid on bandits camps in the area. The bandits were alerted by their dogs. The observed current practice of the bandits is to use their cows as shield to escape while firing at troops. This was the case on 17 November 2018 which was not a deliberate act by the troops to kill the cows.

7. Gentlemen of the Press, our troops were recently deployed to restore and maintain peace in the recent Kaduna crisis, the proactive deployment, was applauded for its critical impact on preventing spread of crisis beyond Kaduna State. It is equally important to state that, as part of 1 Division’s Community Engagement Programmes (CEP) during Operation 777, medical outreach programme was carried out in Sayen Lemu Village in Zaria LGA. Worthy to mention also is the renovation of 2 blocks of class rooms recently in Sayen Lemu Village. As part of the CEP also, the troops in Kidandan area of Giwa LGA, Kaduna State now escort farmers to enable them harvest their crops. This is coming in the aftermath of recent bandits attacking and killing farmers in their farms in the general area.

8. Let me use this opportunity to assure the law abiding citizens that the Armed Forces and other security agencies will continue to ensure the protection of lives and properties of Nigerians. Operation 777 is designed to consolidate on the achievement of the existing operations so as to enhance the safety and promote socio- economic activities of Nigerians. We will continue to solicit the support and cooperation of the media towards successful conduct of the Operation 777.

Thank you and God bless.

PRESIDENT BUHARI DECLARES OPEN NAF MAIDEN INTERNATIONAL AIR POWER SEMINAR

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) is constantly striving to maintain the strategic advantage through the evolution of new strategies for the employment of Air Power to more effectively prosecute the ongoing war against insurgency/terrorism in the Northeast of Nigeria as well as curb acts of criminality in other parts of the country. With this imperative firmly in view, the NAF today, 19 November 2018, commenced a 3-day International Air Power Seminar at the NAF Officers’ Mess and Suites, Kado, Abuja. The theme of the Seminar is “Air Power in Irregular Warfare: a Framework for Understanding and Responding”. The Seminar, which is the first of its kind in the country, attracted air power experts from around the globe who would be brainstorming with Nigeria's foremost air power practitioners to develop innovative approaches for dealing with the challenges of irregular warfare and how Air Power could be employed to address these challenges.

While declaring the Seminar open, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari, who was the Special Guest of Honour, commended the leadership of the NAF for bringing together Air Power practitioners from all over the world to Nigeria to discuss and find practical ways to reinvigorate the fight against insurgency. He noted that the Seminar is quite timely, in that, since the outbreak of the Boko Haram crisis in the Northeast of Nigeria, the NAF and indeed the Armed Forces of Nigeria have been engaged in conducting counter insurgency operations that have challenged the Services’ doctrine, tactics, training, Order of Battle and Force Protection architecture. According to him “Seminars like this are necessary for Armed Services like the NAF to draw from the experiences of other armed forces that have either previously or are currently engaged in counter insurgency operations”. The President, who used the opportunity to canvass for the “whole of the nation approach” for a successful counterinsurgency operation, noted that there must be unity of efforts across multiple Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).

Earlier in his opening address, the Honourable Minister of Defence (HMOD), Mansur Dan-Ali, extolled the contributions of the NAF to the defence of the territorial integrity of Nigeria, while noting that the Ministry of Defence (MOD) was not unaware of both the kinetic and non-kinetic efforts the NAF has been expending in support of the counterinsurgency operations which have been instrumental in curtailing the insurgents and making life more meaningful for the victims. The HMOD seized the opportunity to reaffirm the readiness of the Ministry to continue to ensure the optimum utilization of resources in the procurement of equipment and other requirements for the Services in prosecuting the counterinsurgency operations. He also used the opportunity to thank all officers, airmen and airwomen of the NAF for the consistent and professional manner in which they have been handling all the operations in which they are involved. He added that the International Air Power Seminar perfectly fits into the MOD’s vision of ensuring synergy and cooperation, not just within the Services but across MDAs, in support of the nation’s political objectives.

The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, who welcomed dignitaries to the event, stated that the hosting of the maiden edition of the NAF International Air Power Seminar is necessitated by the security situation in Nigeria, the rapidly changing dynamics in the international arena and the evolving approach to warfare which require careful understanding of the threats and response options available for the projection of Air Power in addressing National Security imperatives. According to him, the changing character of warfare has emphasised the need for a change in the way armed forces approach warfare engagements. “While the engagement in conventional or regular warfare remains a possibility, the global predominant threat to nations has become more irregular in nature”, he added. Air Marshal Abubakar took the opportunity to thank the Federal Government of Nigeria for creating the enabling environment for the enthronement of professionalism in the Service which has led to enhanced operational effectiveness as well as the optimization of local technology through research and development.

Immediately after the event was declared open, the President, in company of other dignitaries, toured the historical photo gallery, which displayed pictures showcasing the activities and achievements of the NAF over the years. Two papers were presented after the Opening Ceremony. The first paper titled “The Role of National Power in Irregular Warfare” was delivered by Professor Usman Tar, from the Nigerian Defence Academy. The second paper, which was presented by Major General Yousef Al-Hnaity, the Commander of the Royal Jordanian Air Force, was on topic “Understanding Irregular Warfare and its Challenges to Air Power Application”. The event, which has representatives from about 20 allied air forces, also featured a cultural night at the end of Day 1 that showcased Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage, while Days 2 and 3 will feature presentation of papers from other Air Power professionals and security experts from Nigeria and other parts of the world.

OPERATION GREEN SWEEP: NAF DESTROYS BOKO HARAM TERRORISTS’ STAGING AREA, VEHICLE WORKSHOP IN MASSIVE RAID AT TUMBUN REGO IN NORTHERN BORNO

The Air Task Force (ATF) of Operation LAFIYA DOLE has destroyed a Boko Haram Terrorist (BHT) staging area and vehicle workshop on the outskirts of Tumbun Rego in Northern Borno State. The operation, which took place on 15 November 2018, Day 2 of Operation GREEN SWEEP, was conducted after NAF aircraft tracked some BHT vehicles from Kareto to a location 3Km Southwest of Tumbun Rego, where the BHTs had carefully concealed their vehicles, fuel storage facility and equipment under trees and vegetation. Accordingly, the ATF attacked the location in a massive air raid involving multiple aircraft in successive waves of strikes leading to the destruction of some BHT vehicles and their fuel storage facility, which was seen engulfed in flames. Several terrorists were also neutralized as a result of the strikes.

OPERATION GREEN SWEEP: CAS VISITS MAIDUGURI TO ASSESS PROGRESS

The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, yesterday, 17 November 2018, embarked on an operational visit to the Air Task Force (ATF) Operation Lafiya Dole in Maiduguri to assess the progress of the Operation Green Sweep, an Air Interdiction Operation targeting selected Boko Haram Terrorists (BHT) locations within the fringes of Lake Chad as well as areas around the Alagarno and Sambisa Forests in Borno State. The Operation, which commenced on 14 November 2018, is aimed at further degrading the remnants of the terrorists, curtailing their freedom of action and denying them bases from which they could launch attacks. The first few days of air strikes ‪recorded significant successes against BHT Camps, Command Centres and Logistics Bases at Sharama, Buk, Sabon Tumbun, Tumbun Rego and Kusuma, among others‬

Upon arrival in Maiduguri, the CAS, who was accompanied by other senior officers from NAF Headquarters, was briefed on the progress of the Operation by the Commander ATF, Air Commodore James Gwani. The CAS also interacted with pilots and other crew members participating in the Operation, congratulating them for the successes recorded and commending them for the phenomenal work they had been doing. While encouraging them to remain steadfast, Air Marshal Abubakar assured that HQ NAF would provide all necessary support to enable them continue making vital contributions towards securing the nation and safeguarding the lives of the Nigerian people. The CAS seized the opportunity to inspect facilities at NAF Base Maiduguri including some ongoing projects like the new Pilots’ Crew Room Building, Block of 30 single bedroom transit accommodation for airmen/airwomen as well as a new extension for the Headquarters ATF Building which was being executed by the ATF Commander. While in Maiduguri, the CAS also oversaw an attack on a BHT hideout in Tumbun Sale carried out by 2 Alpha Jet aircraft supported by an Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance aircraft. The CAS and members of his visiting team have since returned to Abuja.

Breaking: ISWAP Media Chief Killed by Troops: Reports available reveal that one Sale Ahmad Sale a. k. a. Baban Hassan the leader of Al-Barnawi Media group, a faction of Boko Haram was killed by a joint operation conducted by the NIgerian Army and NIgerian Airforce.

The killing of the media leader is indicative of efforts by the NA to eliminate key members of the sect. It is worthy to note that the sect is directly affiliated to the Islamic State and has carried out several attacks against own troops and innocent civilians in the past. Therefore, the death of the group’s media leader shows that the leadership is being targeted successfully and soon other key members would be apprehended or neutralised, thus decimating the group and its activities.

Meanwhile, the new leader of JAMA'ATU NUS'RATUL-ISLAMI WAL-MUSLIMINA, Abul- Fadl Iyad Gali has also been identified. The group is a new terrorist group which Ansaru is affiliated to. In the same vein, the identification of the leader of JAMA'ATU NUS'RATUL-ISLAMI WAL-MUSLIMINA group would enable the NA target the group effectively using advanced technologies in its arsenal. This is as the existence of group portends grave danger to Nigeria’s national security. Pictures including some of their online propaganda activities are shown below.
