PRESS RELEASE ON THE ATTACK ON 157 TASK FORCE BATTALION DEFENSIVE LOCATION AT METELE IN GUZAMALA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF BORNO STATE

1. The attention of the NA has been drawn to several social media, print, electronic and online publications about the recent attack on 157 Task Force Battalion at Metele. Whilst it is true that there was an attack on the location on 18 November 2018, it has however, become necessary to correct several misinformation being circulated with regards to this unfortunate event.

2. It is important for the public to note that the NA has laid down procedures for reporting incidents that involve its personnel who fall casualty in action. Out of respect for the families of our gallant troops, the NOKs are first notified before any form of public information so as to avoid exacerbating the grief family members would bear, were they to discover such from unofficial sources.

3. Furthermore, it suffices to observe that several social media, print and online publications have been brandishing false casualty figures as well as circulating various footages of old and inaccurate BHT propaganda videos and alluding same to be the attack on 157 Task Force Battalion. Whilst it is understandable how such misinformation can spread in this era of social media frenzy, the spurious circulation of some of these videos only contribute to further propagate the propaganda intent of the terrorists; to misinform the populace and portray themselves as what they are not. So far, the situation is that the location is under control as reinforcing units have been able to repel the terrorists and stabilize the situation.

4. The NA sincerely, wishes to thank the various arms of government, MDAs and sister security agencies that have stood with her in these trying times; by commiserating with the families of the fallen heroes who have paid the supreme price for the defence of our dearly beloved country. The necessary support being given the NA by the Federal Government and the goodwill of the Nigerian populace will undoubtedly continue to spur the NA towards the ultimate defeat of the highly degraded BHTs.

5. This is for your information please. You are kindly requested to disseminate same through your various media channels. Thank you.

Someone posted a youtube video on Beegsblog depicting individuals porprting to be surviving Nigerian solders in the aftermath of the attack commenting hysterical on background destroyed military vehicles such as Tanks, APC’s and the like. Supposing the Vid is true and not ducted in any way by unscrupulous individuals bent on exploiting the current debacle for political purposes , what sort of weapons could Bokoharam have employed in shattering those tanks and heavy equipment so utterly? I mean, i am aware of a number of weapon types capable of doing so but the soldiers in the vid seem surprised, the implication being that they felt the fault lays with the condition of the Nigerians tanks and APC's not Bokoharam weapons.

this is the vid:

the vid though strikes me as lies of some sorts...
These base is not Melete base, these is Zari attack that happened few months ago.

Do you think the 3 service arm receives the same budgetary allocation..... obviously that of the army is higher.
Can you count how many staff accomodations have been set up, furnished and commissioned by the air force in the last 4 years?..... I'm sure there are way over 30 which then begs the question -
Apart from paying staff salary, what major expenditure has the army undertaken.....
Of course don't you think I know that already, the question we should be asking is what's the ratio of the budget in terms of numbers of service men/women and needs.

The total number of active personnel in the airforce is not up 20,000 and the army over 200,000 as of 2016, do you see the defference.

Let's check there budget; https://www.google.com/amp/s/ynaija.com/opinion-2017-ministry-defence-budget-analysis/amp/

Henry240:
My friend, you are talking absolute rubbish.

You keep making ridiculous claims that the Vickers MBTs are obsolete. You sit down in your little imaginary world and make imaginary claims.

Provide proof they were not working or just shut the hell up!

The Vickers MBT has a powerful 105mm gun.
The Vickers MBT reaches a speed of 50km/h
Gun range for the Vickers is 5km.

In comparison to the T-72 which is a better Tank, the Vickers is well within acceptable standards for a Tank.

The T-72 has a 125mm gun
The T-72 also reaches a speed of 80km/h

The M1 Abrams Tank uses a 105mm gun
The M1 Abrams reaches a speed of 75km

How far is the Vickers MBT from these 2 other Tanks?
Are you too stupid to see they are all within acceptable envelope.

They Vickers was purchased in the 80s. South-Africa still uses Tanks from the 80s, so are many other countries across the world.

BHT attacked friendly forces with gun-trucks, men on foot how were they better armed than friendly forces that had better armour and guns.

You don't need to be Albert Einstein to know that strategy, poor planning, lax attitude were the bane of friendly forces in that humiliating defeat.
You just confirmed my suspicion. Too much textbook and PS3 combat games in that your cocoa nut head.

For those saying the army is under-funded, pls answer the bolded above.
Look at you, the way you people respond to question and make your comparison is somehow funny.

You can't compare the NAF and NA budget and needs.

The army isbigge, needs much more funding that the airforce. Have you been into an airforce and army barracks, you will fall in love with the airforce ASAP especially under these administration.

The NA also uses the beryl, Tarvor etc . But the question is can it afford it as standard issue of all her soldiers; Capital NO. And the airforce might struggle to for all its regiments because they are not that much as compared to the army.

Secondly corruption in both arm of the force is much chronic than one another.

The aircrafts that where purchased by the airforce was paid by the federal government especially the tucanos and the Mi35M . It took years for the airforce to purchase only 3 j17 thunders.

Probably the federal government should spend much on the army apart from there yearly budget.

The main problem i have with you is your lack of comprehension.

A video or picture gives you a mental picture of what went down in the battle zone. You don't get a full picture but a rough idea of the attack, weapons used and composition.

That's how estimates are done.
If you have watched the video then you shouldn't be spitting these. Probably you are confused or just spitting out of your ignorance.

Incompetence at it's height.
Am not supporting any sides dude, am stating a fact. The realty on ground, conditions our troops fight in, morals are low, most equipment are obsolete.

What part you don't get, must we force everything into your coconut head.

Most of the equipment APC/MBT on that post where almost not operational, most of these soldiers stood Thierry ground until late casualties where growing and no air support. Sometimes you retriet to fight for another day . Most they all die before they prove there worth, most of you here do not av the balls to blame the right authority.

Your problem as always been comprehension and too much textbook know-how, which doesn't work out sometimes on the battle field.

I think some of you guys missed Henry's point, which i kinda see.
Those BHT guys didn't appear out of thin air, and they surely didn't show up with futuristic weapons, it's those same Aks and RPGs with their gun trucks, and yet over 370 soldiers got whopped, that's the point.
What ever happened to being aware? 24/7 look outs on rotation etc. You don't get caught unaware, only a basterd soldier will ever say such thing.
Caught unaware? You were in a war zone, and that soldier made such excuse? No one said war was easy, but you chose to be there, it's a choice, and those not willing to do it shouldn't.
Running away coz you hear bullets coming from all sides isn't exactly what soldiers were taught, was it?
Perhaps some of these guys should take that whole zone as enemy territory and not relax as if it wasn't a war zone, you don't get caught unaware while in battle, that was an annoying excuse
So you think the soldiers on duty/guard at that point of time where not doing there job cool huh

Or they told you, they where not properly rotated, most of you guys here watch a lot war movies and play combat videos games, these war sometimes is not a textbook thing.

People like you can't kill a rat, yet you have the balls to call someone "BASTERD SOLDIER". Please make your points in a civilised manner, tnx.

Look, remove that batshit "you sit from the comfort of your room...". Are you joking now!
How many Nations can afford showing up In the air every time? Did you happily omit where I said NAF is on a campaign named Op green sweep.

No matter the helicopters, jets in the end COIN is an infantryman's business.

Now unto Artillery, forgot where I said Contingency plans? If at all push comes to shove and they surrender the base, Artillery would have a hard time ruining the base?

The South Africans and Rhodesians say different in their Bush Wars about Air Power! Air power is an offensive tool FIRST in COIN

Yes, The Vickers is a shitty tank, but answer me, can it shoot? If Yes couldn't it have been emplaced to provide static gunfire support? They had TWO!!

I believe the boys don't have all they need, but God forbid anyone justifies leaving the ones they have to those that are in need!
Now how can you compare "The South Africans and Rhodesians bush war".. dude it's a defferent ball game.

The role of air support in COIN can't be overemphasised.

If you have read my previous post, those vickers MBT and tracked APC are not operational. They are just mere sitting ducks.

By now we should have retired all those vickers MBT, they are bleeped too slow and heavy to maneuver. If you have seen the T72 in operation you would never want to ride in those obsolete stuff called vickers MBT.

Talking of how many nation's can afford showing up in the air; that I can beat my chest that YES we can afford it but corruption wouldn't let us.

Finally @odunayaw I have had my own share of experience way back 2010 to mid 2014 during the Heat on the war at Kekeno, a border vilkage to Niger. So am not sitting in one corner of the room spitting shit.

Back then there was no MRAPS only light skinned APC to Leed your convoy, most of these APC, MT-LB, vickers MBT are sitting ducks.

You guys keep blaming soldiers on the ground, they are dying in numbers by the day. His there sacrifice not enough. The hierarchy of the Military needs to be shaked.

#ISWAP in Sahel and West Africa will be no match for its al-Qaeda rival soon?
As new alliance among jihadi groups are been forged under al-Qaeda.

I predict a pre-emptive attack by AQ groups on #ISIS in Sahel and West Africa with defections of fighters might be the aim.

The earlier our military buckle up and the federal government spend on Defense or else we will see more of these huh cool

Does the video you watched depict the total number of insurgents that attacked the base?
The video shows a large number of insurgents. And the insurgent covering the whole show can't cover the whole attack at once. That means you can't just post four pictures and say these are the numbers of insurgents that attacked the post.

Remember the Toyota War? Chadian soldiers defeated Libyan soldiers who were better armed and Libyans had tanks and APCs but got their butts kicked out of chad.

Saudi Arabians with their world class gear are getting torn apart in Yemen.

It all comes down to the Soldier and if he has the training and the will to fight and win .

Henry is right though, they had been warned about the attack, but they seem to have done nothing about it.
They had more than enough equipment and ammo to push their way out or hold their position.

But anyway war is not for everyone, it takes a special kind of Man to fight one.
Dude am disappointed that you are saying these. All of these you mentioned are defferent types of war you just put together.

The Saudi- Yemen war; the Yemen separatist has always used the jungle type of war to attack the Saudis, just what the Vietnam North gong did to the United States military. Does that mean they are better than the United States military.

Chadian vs lybian conflict was not a full scale war huh
In all of the conflicts Gaddafi had to support few number of factions participating in the civil war, while Libya's opponents found the support of the French government, which intervened militarily to save the Chadian government in 1978, 1983 and 1986.

If it was a full scale: the Chadians can not survive the Lybians by any means.

When did we become the US/Europe boys that fight with the hoped of Air power, you might say we are fighting in our backyard but then do you remember NAF is on Op Green Safe right now?

What happened to NA having a contingency plan of Artillery support, How can more than a company worth of soldiers be in a location for more than 24 hours without setting up proper defence structure

Sir, I am beginning to hum the incompetence tune
Laughing at what you just spit...... grin

"When did we become US /European boys. Perhaps they know the timely and effectiveness of air cover. You sit in the comfort of your room type what you don't know of.

Even the developed and advanced European/western army do not joke with air cover, the Air cover gives you a 3D cover. For the artellery you mentioned it is not as effective as air cover in terms of reach & range, there are other limiting factors with artellery support in COIN war unlike the conventional war we all know.

BHT style of attack is to bleed you dry of ammunition and take casualties till you abandon your post/base. You can't do without air cover in COIN operations.

From a very reliable source; a survival. Most of the APC and MBT are not reliable as I have said earlier on, a lot of things are wrong in persecuting these war.

@odunayaw talking about incompetence tune; you might want to reevaluate your statements. The NA soldiers are trying to some extent; g8ve them the right tools and I bet you we will start seeing the defference .

The first stage of dealing with a problem is understanding and accepting your failure. Not pass blame around.

I'm hearing reports that we lost 4 APCs and 2 Main Battle Tanks.

If you have ever witnessed BHT style of attack: it takes balls to stand it. And it as not changed.

-attack the base in large numbers.
-atacking from all directions.
-the be based is aware of the inpending attack but the airforce probability of showing up is slim.
-once you start taking casualties forget it, you've lost your base.
-defending the base with heavy and slow vickers MBT, the MT-LB APC which is not reliable.

We are loosing the initiative, if something is not done in time.

Those Nigerian soldiers are utterly silly. It is not a funding problem.

Anyone who talks about funding being the cause of the disaster in Metele should be shot in the head.

Each Nigerian gun-truck carries a 12.7mm HMG as a basic weapon. They had at-least 2 Tanks and prior Intel about this attack.

It is a clear case of gross incompetence, Lousiness and indicipline.

How many times would new weapons be bought for those soldiers?

They are there voluntarily, not by force. They should do their job and stop fucking complaining and making excuses for incompetence all the time.

The COAS should have been fired by now.

The President is also very clueless about the security situation in the Northeast. Nothing has changed, nothing has improved.

The Nigerian army is properly funded to do the job it needs to do. You guys and Beegeagles need to stop ranting about funding.

Does BHT now have Tanks, APCs and Fighter jets?
You should be shot in the head seriously.

I can't believe you are spitting these nonsense. The army been properly funded, you might as well day they are properly motivated against an enemy who is ready to fight.

We can't win these war with Toyota Hilux mounted with 50 calibre/12.7mm HMG. Apart from the fact that the soldiers are not doing there well, most of the lapses are coming from the army HQ and the army not been properly funded.

Have you watched the video of the attack; hundreds of insurgency Ed atacking from to defferent axis. They where out numbered and flanked from all directions, out gunned in numbers. Where was the Airforce huh If there is any point in time the army needs the airforce; it is these type of situation.

The army top brass needs some serious shaking.
