Fighting Boko Haram: Shettima makes 500 traditional hunters swear with Quran, Bible not to betray military To eliminate any doubts that could arise at the battle front, Borno Governor, Kashim Shettima on Wednesday evening presided over the administration of oaths of allegiance, using the Quran and Bible, to 500 traditional hunters, made up of Muslims and Christians, who will be sent out to support soldiers fighting Boko Haram in some locations of the state. The oath was administered at the multi-purpose hall of the government house in Maiduguri, after which the Governor allocated operational vehicles to the hunters, assured them of payment of monthly allowances and donated hundreds of bags in food items to support their families. "May anyone who reveals our strategy to Boko Haram or betrays allegiance to the military and Government in anyway be consumed by this oath" leader of the traditional hunters, Mai Durma announced after administering the oaths. He added, Although the hunters believed to have traditional fighting skills, had undergone thorough background screening for months, their leader Mai Durma was made to before the Governor, administer oath of allegiance to each of the hunters who swore not to share with anyone whatever part of the military's operational plan they may come to know or betray allegiance to the military, federal or state government in by the slightest sympathy or association with insurgents or their agents. Durma told fellow hunters to be mindful of what they swore to and commit themselves to efforts in regain peace in the state. Governor Shettima said renewed attacks by insurgents in some parts of the State necessitated the fresh deployment of traditional hunters who have volunteered to compliment progresses being recorded by gallant soldiers. He also said even though there was no doubt concerning the sincerity of the traditional hunters selected, the oath was to eliminate any doubt which could arise especially since unlike the Civilian JTF who have worked longer with soldiers, engagement of the traditional hunters was comparatively new. Earlier introducing the hunters to Governor Shettima, Borno State's Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Barister Kaka Shehu Lawal, who is a member of the state's security council and whose ministry coordinates counter insurgency volunteers through a department of civil rights protection, recalled that "couple of months back in one of the state's security council meetings attended by heads of military, police, DSS and other para-military formations in the state, the council resolved to engage 500 gallant traditional hunters to compliment efforts of our security forces" and in furtherance, selection and screening was as done through the leadership of the traditional hunters. "It is in view of the security council's resolution that we present to you these set of gallant hunters for inauguration" Shehu told Shettima. Leader of the hunters, Mai Durma assured of his members' combat readiness and allegiance to the Nigerian Army and Government as they offer to fight in defense of Borno people and Nigeria's sovereignty. |

An Egyptian Air Force pilot Major Mohtady "Cobra" Shazly was killed when his Rafale fighter Jet crashed during training. Major Shazly is of the 203rd Tactical Fighter Wing. Update: Rafale (EM) involved in the incident was single seat variant, of which Egypt ordered 8. Reports about a K-8E being the aircraft involved are incorrect. That's something I'm confident in standing by.

PRESS RELEASE TROOPS LAUDED FOR DISPLAY OF PROFESSIONALISM IN CONTAINING BOKO HARAM TERRORISTS Troops of 159 Battalion deployed in Sector 2 of Operation LAFIYA DOLE in Geidam , Yobe state, have been lauded for their display of gallantry at containing Boko Haram Terrorists (BHT), who infiltrated the serene town of Geidam on Wednesday, 23rd January 2019, at about 5:30pm, shooting sporadically, thereby creating panic and causing unnecessary apprehension. The Acting Commander Sector 2, Operation LAFIYA DOLE, Brigadier General Mohammed Dala, gave the commendation today, during an on the spot assessment visit to Geidam. He commended the troops for their gallantry and deliberate effort in protecting the civil populace in the town, particularly at the Geidam market. He directed the immediate replenishment of the troops' supplies, assuring them that issues of their welfare will always be a top priority. The BHTs who came to loot foodstuffs and other items, took advantage of the market day in Geidam to infiltrate the town and attacked the military base. The troops displayed a high sense of professionalism by discretely engaging the terrorists with less sophisticated weapons in order to minimize collateral damage with the attendant civilian casualties. Sadly however, the troops, in the process suffered some casualties in vehicles, equipment and personnel. The Sector Commander seized the opportunity to pay a visit to the Emir of Geidam and afterwards had a meeting with officials of other security agencies, where he sued for their cooperation and synergy in sharing timely information that would enhance the pro-activeness of troops. He further reassured them, that troops will continue to carry out aggressive patrols and offensives to deny Boko Haram and other criminal elements freedom of action. He further urged the good people of Geidam and Yobe state in general, to go about their lawful businesses, as the troops are committed to the protection of lives and property, as well as working round the clock to forestall any attempt by groups or individuals to cause breakdown of law and order in the state. The Commander however warned, that anyone identified as a BHT collaborator will be arrested and made to face the full wrath of the law. You are please requested to disseminate this information through your medium to the general public. Thanks for your usual cooperation.
