PoliticsRe: Lagos-ibadan Expressway: More Questions Than Answers by billante(m): 9:09pm On May 05, 2013
VolvoS60: ^^^^
I came into Lagos today from Ibadan through the expressway.

Despite what some people on here would have us believe, the road is still in BAD shape. I have written several posts on NL about this expressway - I am thoroughly weary of writing. I have made it a point of duty to remind people I meet that the ruling party at the federal level has been in charge since 1999, and yet federal highways are still a disgraceful eyesore. Whether Nigerians will take these reminders and do something useful with them is another matter altogether.

A so-called federal highway where the 30m? setback rule is observed in the breach? angry A few years ago, I was driving from Ibadan to Lagos when I ran into the ever present gridlock at the old Ogere toll point - gridlock caused by the menace of tanker & trailer drivers who chose to park their vehicles right on the expressway. I drove to the FRSC outpost at the toll point to find out why tanker/trailer drivers would decide to park their vehicles on the expressway and waste everyone else's time, with the police, FRSC, Customs etc. doing absolutely nothing about it. By the time the FRSC official on duty finished explaining the reasons why those trailers were left there, I left his office even angrier than I was when I had gone in.

As at today, those trailers/tankers have moved away from the road itself and are less of a nuisance. The question I have is this: why were Nigerians held to ransom all these years? And who is going to pay for all that lost time? Let's not even get started on the many prayer houses that dot the Lagos outskirts of the expressway. I'm sure everyone reading this is familiar with the completely needless traffic jams that occur whenever some religious event is being held at any or all of these prayer houses. Do we ever think of the real cost of the time lost to all this nonsense? What kind of people are so indifferent when it comes to appreciating the importance of time? angry

Until we Nigerians decide that we want to live (and not just exist) and until we begin to elect leaders who reflect this conscious, reasoned choice, we will continue to suffer. As I have said time without number on these boards: life is about choices or actions and the inevitable consequences of these choices. Nigerians have de-linked the quality of their miserable lives from their voting choices and they are paying the price for this decision. Salvation can only come when Nigerians themselves (and no one else) decide to restore the link of their own free will.

A man can choose his sin. But he cannot choose its consequences.
All this long epistle just because FG hasn't fixed that road! do you know the amount of roads FG is presently handling! there are about 145 roads nationwide all struggling for ministry of works budget of less than 1 billion dollars!

Relax the road will be done! the modalities of financing the construction of the road is being finalized...Just like the 2nd niger bridge was finalized and construction about to start.

The sagamu-ore benin expressway that have also received this same criticism has now been reconstructed to a reasonable extent and nobody is commending d govt, just like nobody will talk again when lagos-ibadan express way start recieving attention

GenBuhari: @CFCfan,
Ok, I give credit where it due, FG has completed a few cosmetic changes in one or two airports.

@billante
If you review my past posts you would find that I rarely criticise GEJ, as I appreciate that Nigeria was ruined by Obasanjo before GEJ took office.
I also credited GEJ for Nigeria's success in AFCON 2013.

However the corruption which he met is still rampant and he is doing precious little to deal with it.

In any case Nigeria has more pressing infrastrucural requirements than some relatively minimal cosmetic facelifts of some airports
I agree with you! Corruption is still very rampant in this present govt just as it has always been.....It will take someone dat got elected on a new party thats is not PDP or ACN or even APGA, with no Godfather whatsoever to be able to extensively fight corruption in nigeria! this is d only area i will say GEJ is not doing well or have intention of tackling with a political will.....every other area he is putting up effort even though some haven't started yielding visible proof.

1wolex85: For the 1st time I agree with ur post but I have a question, how long will this go on for us to see the effect on the pump price? If it isn't going to affect pump price, the increase in production has little effect
price reduction will only happen when more than what nigeria consumes daily is local refined and crude is given to the refinaries at lower price than market prices.

for now imported fuel still account for 70 percent of the country daily needs....even when all the refinaries are producing at full capacity there will still be short fall....thats why dangote planned refinery is good news to hear...it will make nigeria self sufficient in refined products as he did with cement.
PoliticsRe: Nigerian Refineries Roar Back To Life by billante(m): 10:40am On May 04, 2013
And the turn around of the refineries have not even been done yet and they have already start performing well...just imagine when their TAM has been completed by next year with their full 450,000 combined capacity producing at full rate added with when dangote planned 450,000 barrels comes on stream, the country will be washed with refined products....

Even if subsidy is removed then, fuel price will still be dropping because even if dangote says he wont reduce his price, govt refineries will be selling at a lower price cause they dont have greedy shareholders to churn out millions of profit to, definitely dangote will be forced to bring down his price or he will start declaring loss.....All to benefit of the masses

No sane human being can say this present govt is a total failure, Pls let be truthful for once it wont make u go impotent.

Real time reportage of Nigeria’s business and financial sector will soon get a boost as the Bloomberg Group from London has commenced activities for the take off of its television station, Bloomberg TV. Africa.

The Bloomberg TV. Africa, according to the commercial director, Bloomberg Group, Linsey Olivier, during a visit to Arunma Oteh, director general of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in Abuja, will be broadcasting live from Lagos business news, economics and financial markets information on Africa. The station which will commence operations in October 2013 would have Lagos as headquarters.

As part of its efforts to prepare for the take-off of the station, the Group was at the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) headquarters on Thursday, April 25, 2013, to seek the support and cooperation of the apex capital market regulator in the new venture, TV Africa.

Speaking during the visit to the director-general of SEC, the executive producer, Bloomberg Africa TV., Kieran Baker, said the group already has presence in some other jurisdictions like India and Turkey but now wants to tell the African business and financial stories “straight from source” in order to engender enhanced awareness of the business opportunities in Africa and attract more investors to the continent.

He noted that Bloomberg would leverage its well known integrity in generating and transmitting business data to provide information on Africa to the global market, adding that the station would start with a soft launch in July 2013 with programmes from London which would be followed in October with live transmission from Lagos, its headquarters in Africa.

Speaking further, he said the station would commence with coverage of the financial markets in Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa and Kenya and later spread out to other markets in Africa. He, therefore, solicited the support of the commission as a major regulator in the Nigerian financial industry in the area of giving TV Africa access to business centers and intelligence.

Responding, the director general of SEC, Arunma Oteh, commended the group for coming to Africa and Nigeria in particular, adding that there is no better way of telling Africa’s stories than through presence in Africa.

PoliticsUN Rates Nigerian Press One Of The Freest In The World by billante(op): 8:12pm On May 03, 2013
The UN Resident Coordinator, Mr Daouda Toure, on Friday said that in spite of some hitches witnessed by Nigerian journalists, it was still one of the freest in the world.

Toure said this in Abuja at an event organised by UNESCO to mark this year's World Press Freedom Day.

According to him, the Press in Nigeria is regarded as one of the freest in the world in spite of some pockets of incidents of impunity and attacks.

``Unfortunately and sadly, three journalists and media workers died in the line of duty in Nigeria in 2012. ``

He said the United Nations family, through UNESCO, had dedicated webpage in the memory of ``these gallant colleagues who died while performing their constitutional responsibility''.

Toure said the UN system in Nigeria had consistently promoted freedom of expression and public access to information through institutional capacity building and curriculum development for journalism training.

He said the UN, through the Democratic Governance for Development (DGD) project, its international partners mainly the European Union, the UK Department for International Development and the Canadian International Development agency, was working to strengthen the voice and capacity of the Nigerian media.

According to Toure, this is with the objective of promoting media pluralism and democratisation of citizens’ access to information.

He said that DGD project was also supporting the effective implementation of the Freedom of Information Act with government institutions and civil society to promote inclusiveness in the democratic process and accountability of elected officials.

Mr. Bayo Atoyebi, the Executive Secretary, Nigerian Press Council, called on Nigerian journalists to show more responsibility in their reportage, adding that no story was worth dying for.

He said the media should shun unbridled sensationalism, adding that they should practise with ethical standard.

Atoyebi called on journalists to hold government accountable to the people, adding that professionalism should not be jettisoned on the alter of money.

Not hitting 10000 MW by Dec doesn't mean there wont be a remarkable improvement of electricty supply by then....even if only 7500 MW can be generated and transmitted efficiently, all will sing halleluya to GEJ by then

7000-8000 MW of electricity efficiently transmitted and distributed by d grid with current demand will surely guarantee 24hrs of light maybe in 3 days before they might take it for an hour or two and it will come back again.

Present 4000MW gives about 12 hrs of light a double of it should give you the above scenario!
HealthMiracle Twins Born 87 Days Apart Set Guinness World Record by billante(op):
In what can only be called an absolute miracle, a set of twins from Ireland were born 87 days apart from each other - setting a Guinness World Record for "longest interval between the birth of twins." The miracle twins truly have an incredible story.

It all started when their mother, Maria, went into labor right before her 24th week began. The mother's water broke and after two days of labour, her first twin, Amy, was born. Because of her size - a mere 1 pound, 3 ounces - the dangerously premature baby was rushed to the NICU. Doctors prepped for the birth of the second twin. But something bizarre happened.

Maria's contractions stopped.

Her medical team was concerned about infection - of her and the other twin - so they induced labour. But something bizarre happened again: Maria did not respond to the induction and her contractions never began again. "They stopped dead. It was like I never gave birth," the mother says. And "the doctors said they had never seen anything like it."

The mother made the decision with her husband and her doctors to "let nature take its course," and not force a delivery of the second twin. And for the next three months, twin Amy and mother Maria both remained in the hospital. Maria says, "I made up my mind I wouldn't leave the hospital unless it was with both my girls. Even if it meant that I would have to lie in bed for the full three months I had left of my pregnancy - I would do whatever it took."

It was four days before Maria could even see baby Amy, and when she did, Amy was in the incubator "covered in tubes." It was another five weeks before Maria was allowed to hold Amy. Amazingly, when she did, Amy's heart stabilized and the twin still in her womb began moving and kicking, "as if she knew," the mother says. The second time Maria held Amy - the following day - Amy "turned and put her head towards her sister inside the womb."

At 36 weeks, 3 days, Maria was induced and twin Katie was born, healthy and not in need of any medical attention. Later that day, a nurse put Katie in the incubator with her sister and Maria says Amy immediately smiled, reports Healthy Living.

Katie left the hospital with her mother five days later, and Amy joined the whole family - including two older siblings - seven weeks later.

These amazing miracle twins have broken the previous record of 84 days and have defied all odds.

Inflation rate in the country dropped to 8.6 per cent in March , the lowest in almost five years as the impact of higher fuel prices a year ago fell out of the calculation.
According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), inflation eased to 8.6 percent from 9.5 percent in February. Prices rose 0.7 percent in the month.
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has kept its benchmark policy rate at a record 12 percent for nine consecutive meetings to keep prices incheck and bolster the naira. The inflation rate has been below 10 percent, matching the central bank’s target, for three consecutive months.
Inflation will probably remain between 9 and 11 percent this year, central bank Governor Lamido Sanusi said on March 24. While Sanusi said he supports keeping the benchmark rate unchanged, more of the 12 members of the Monetary Policy Committee are pushing for rate cuts. Three MPC members voted for a reduction in the March 19 meeting, up from two in January.
The MPC will probably keep its key rate unchanged at its next meeting on May 21-22, Johannesburg-based Absa Group Ltd. (ASA) said in an e-mailed note to clients before today’s data.
The core inflation rate, which excludes agricultural products, rose 7.2 percent in Marchfrom a year earlier, down from 11.2 percent in February, the statistics office said. Food inflation eased to 9.5 percent from 11 percent
