Politics › Boko Haram Denies Cease-fire With Nigerian Government by billante(op): 8:39pm On Jul 13, 2013 |
The leader of the Nigerian Islamist militant group Boko Haram denied that it entered into a cease-fire agreement with the government and endorsed an attack last week on a school in northeast Yobe state. Abubakar Shekau, in a video message sent to reporters today, denied claims by Nigerian Minister of Special Duties Kabiru Turaki this week that a cease-fire was reached on July 8 after talks with the group’s deputy leader, Mohammed Marwan. “Let me assure you that we will not enter into any truce with these infidels,” Shekau said. “We will not enter into any truce with the Nigerian government.”
Boko Haram, whose name means “western education is a sin” in the Hausa language, has killed thousands of people in gun and bomb attacks since 2009 in the mainly Muslim north and Abuja in its campaign to establish an Islamic state in Africa’s largest oil producer. Nigeria’s more than 160 million people are roughly split between Christians, predominant in the south, and Muslims, mostly in the north.
The purported cease-fire came in effect two days after 20 students and a teacher were killed in an attack on a secondary school in the northeastern state of Yobe. Eli Lazarus, a spokesman for the joint military and police task force in Yobe, said the attack was probably carried out by Boko Haram. “We believe in the massacre inflicted on the secondary school in Mamudo and Damaturu and other schools; we earlier warned that we are going to burn all schools,” Shekau said. “They are schools purposely built to fight Islam.”
Military Offensive While Boko Haram doesn’t attack “children and young girls or old women,” he said, “teachers that teach Western education, we are supposed to kill them in the presence of their students.” The military began an air and ground offensive against Boko Haram on May 16, two days after President Goodluck Jonathan imposed emergency rule in the northeastern states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa to step up the fight against the Islamist militants. The insurgents were taking over parts of Borno state, according to Jonathan. http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-07-13/nigeria-s-boko-haram-denies-cease-fire.html |

taharqa2: Lol.... Really, one has just got to ask if we have a Min of Science and Technology in Naija. BUT, I think you have to remove d Min of Water Resources from the Category of 'do little Ministers', cos that Ministry have done very very Impressive (emphasis on d word, very) work in the last 3 years, in Resuscitating many Major long-dead Dams across the country (esp, in d north) and the building of new ones, as well as d resuscitation of River Basins across d nation. That Ministry honestly need to do more work in publicizes what they are doing cos almost no one (including until recently, myself) know nothing about d really Significant work they have done/are doing in that section...... I agree completely with yr 1st Category though. Those are obviously d Best of d lot. With d Min of Agric my favourite.. Really? Haven't heard much about dat ministry.....That ministry was very vibrant when murtala shagari son of shehu shagari was the minister! All those small small dams we hav should be installed with turbines! If most of them can be generating at least 10 mega watts of electricity each, they will go a long way in improving the power situation while also irrigating thousands of hectares of farmland. |

Guk: 100% fallacy! You cannot crash prices below what is charged now and be profitable. See a typical fare to Abuja from Lagos:
Adult fare single of NGN 2,999.00 Total Fare including taxes is NGN 19,998.00 meaning Tax collected by Federal Govt & Min of Aviation is NGN 16,999.
Please intelligently tell me how you can charge any less than 3k with a full load of 120 passengers or less on an Embraier and still remain profitable Guy pls stop lying! how can FG collect 16,999 tax from a 19,998 air fare! and arik and co are still operating? even the devil cant be that wicked And for you information the average fare most of the present airlines are charging is 23,000 naira.....Arik is even charging an average of 30,000 naira for an hour journey, which i believe you will agree is way too high and thats what the minister intend to bring down with the new carrier. All local destination should not be more than 15,000 naira....and the airlines will always have loaded planes if their prices can come down to this average |

I don't know why some people cannot make comments without insulting others. I won't insult you because it's not necessary, silence will just do. Please read the article again. I don't think it stated that they will acquire the 50 aircrafts in one day, they only said by end of next year (meaning before the end of next year), it's a gradual process. Only those who lack good and quality home training with great moral values, hopeless, jobless, insensible, ignorant, unprofessional, jokers and irresponsible people insult others. This is why I hardly comment on NL. People don't address issues, they rather find fun in throwing insults. Prayer is key in development of any nation. Even in America, the citizens pray for America, even in their currency, "in God we trust". God bless Nigeria. My message is that we should be OPTIMISTIC.... Lets hope for the best. Most of them are kids with access to internet so don't bother your brain!..The reasonable ones knows this is a great news and something to be positive about |

The China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) has unveiled its plan to invest about $1billion in Nigeria towards the construction of cement factory, the modernisation of Tin Can Port, saw mill factory, funding for the construction of investment in real estate and in manpower development.
President of CCECC, Yuan Li, disclosed this to THISDAY Tuesday in Beijing in an interview after the company hosted Nigerian delegation that accompanied President Goodluck Jonathan on a state visit to the world’s most populous country.
Li said the company, which has the highest number of on-going construction work in Nigeria, planned to move from being a mere construction company to becoming an investor and would soon start commercial production of cement for the Nigeria market.
In real estate the company said it was already developing 110 houses (villas) somewhere around the Lagos-Epe expressway near the Lekki Free Trade Zone, which would be completed by the end of this year at the cost of $10 million.
“In the past Chinese Civil Engineering Construction Corporation was mainly in construction work and now I think we have already become one of the largest construction companies in Nigeria and we are competing with any other big construction company in the country, like Julius Berger. Since we have become one of the biggest construction companies in Nigeria, we need to find some other ways of development.
“The company said that before now it was manufacturing the cement it needed for its construction work, but it would expand the factory and begin to manufacture cement for the Nigerian market so that the pricing of the product would be competitive, adding that it would build plazas in Abuja and Lagos that would have hotels, shopping malls, offices and other businesses.
“We are looking for a land in Lagos and also in Abuja where we will build the CCECC plaza in the two cities. Each one of the lands will be about 50 square metres that will have hotels, offices. Each project will cost $100 million. We already have CCECC plaza in Beijing, in Shanghai and in Macau. We want to have several others in Africa, staring with Nigeria.”
The company also said it would offer scholarship to Nigerians to study technical courses in China, especially railway engineering in the Chinese Railway University, adding that Nigeria’s management of its railway system is weak due to dearth of technical manpower; that it would help the country by developing the needed manpower for the sector and acquiring and managing the locomotives (rail cars).
“We found that Nigerian students are not studying about railway transport in your country, even in Britain, but in China I graduated from the China Railway University. So we studied railway transport for four years in the university as major course of study. So we think that it is our duty to help you to train such engineers in China. Then they can go back to work for us or work for Nigerian Railway Corporation. That will be good. We are not doing this only for your country; we are also going to do it for Ethiopia.” CCECC is also building four international terminals at the four major airports in Nigeria at the cost of $600 million with a loan from China Exim Bank that would be paid back with two per cent interest after seven years with 22 years moratorium.
“The four terminals will be located in the Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt and Kano airports and the projects would be completed in 20 months. It will also provide jobs for 6000 indigenous workers with Chinese expatriates as supervising engineers.”
While welcoming the Nigerian delegates, including ministers, directors and other top officials of some ministries, Li said that the company had employed over 20,000 local staff in all its construction and other operations in Nigeria, adding that it would embark on construction of highways, development of the Tin Can Port under Public Private Partnership (PPP) and assist Nigeria in the modernisation of its railway infrastructure. www.thisdaylive.com/articles/ccecc-plans-1bn-investment-in-cement-factory-tin-can-port/152952/ |

playmode: I am for the development of Nigeria and this Aerotropolis concept sounds pretty cool.I also like the direction the Minister of aviation has been going so far.Clearly she is a progressive thinker or she had good advisers. That being said i am not so keen on this Aerotropolis concept.Allow me to elaborate:
I once had a business in Kempton Park South Africa near the O.R Tambo International airport and i had to move my business after 12 months due to the constant noise of planes landing or taking off.It was one year of hell because we literally had to close the windows permanently and sound proof the office space to prevent the sound of planes coming through. That however did not stop the slight vibrations which occurred when the planes were near. Based on my experience ,i will like the minister to consider the following:
(A) Will it be a good idea for offices or houses to be subject to Aeroplane noise and vibrations every 5 mins throughout the day?
(B) Will it be a good idea for mall goers to be subject to noise or vibration from planes when they are relaxing in the malls?
(c) Will it not be dangerous for offices and homes to be located near the airport in case of a plane crash?
(D) Will players on a golf course not be distracted by the sound of planes not to mention the heavy winds which will follow and blow away their hats or golf balls?
Madam Stella ,with all due respect please conduct a feasibility study on the Advantages and disadvantage of this idea so you don't end up developing another white elephant project which will not be attractive to Nigerian investors. It will be better if you created a new business district which will be linked to the airport by a special road but will be located far away from the noise of the Airport like they have done in China.Have a look at the Zhengzhou New area and Kangbashi New Area of China. Those look like better well thought out ideas. Good point you made! but the Aerotropolis is actually a borrowed concept from other countries which have already established so and running them! the minister didn't form the Aerotropolis concept on her own.....since it has been successful in those countries inspite of the points you raised i dont see why it wont work in nigeria. Most of the sectors that comes with an Aerotropolis are noise related.....warehouse, shopping malls, cargo terminal,Train station,Fuel tank/Power plant,Theme park free trade zone.... etc are all noise generator on their own, except Residential buildings which on my own thought should not be part of aerotropolis concept. |

Politics › Luxury-Bus Owners Confirms That Roads Are Better Now by billante(op): 8:49am On Jul 04, 2013*. Modified: 10:18am On Jul 04, 2013 |
ABUJA—The Federal Government, yesterday, said it would construct dual carriage way to link the six geographical zones in the country to reduce travel times as well as ease the hardship being encountered by travellers. This was disclosed by the Minister of Works, Mike Onelememen when he received members of the Association of Luxury Bus Owners of Nigeria in his office.
The luxury bus owners who were forced out of transport business in the past following deplorable condition of roads visited Onolememen to commend the Federal Government on the improvements made on federal highways. They also said their buses had started plying the roads again as a result of the new improved condition of Nigeria roads.
However, the Minister promised that before the end of this administration, government will embark on the project of connecting the six geo-political zones of the country with dual carriageway. He stated that the illegal activities on the Right of Way, ROW, along federal highways would be addressed as such roads would be physically demarcated and secured. The luxury bus owners led by Chairman of ABC transport company, Mr. Frank Nneji, told the minister that they had travelled round the country, pointing out that, the good condition of roads nationwide showed the competence, professionalism and speed on the side of government.
Onolememen, who was delighted to receive the bus owners, expressed appreciation that such words were great encouragement for government to improve further on the condition of roads. He noted that President Goodluck Jonathan had during inception of his government in 2011 made a commitment to make roads motorable in the country adding, ‘‘it is that article of faith that is driving us to deliver on his transformational promises.’’ The Minister further said that when he visited Onitsha, Anambra State, in 2011, he noticed the rate of dilapidation of the roads as well as gully erosion but said that the situation had since changed for the better in the commercial city which was the gateway to South East. According to him, Onitsha was now the ‘‘home of good roads.’’ Onolememen further said that he “travelled by road recently from Abuja to Benin, Shagamu and Lagos and was very much delighted to see the tremendous achievements of this administration on the provision of international standard road network.”
On tolling, he stated that the Federal Government had not yet decided on the issue due to its determination to give Nigerians an international standard road network.
Earlier, the Leader of the delegation and Chairman ABC Transport Mr. Frank Nneji, stated that they were in the ministry to congratulate the Minster and his team for fixing the Nigerian Highways and not to complain of anything. Nneji added that it was because of the fact that the roads were in good condition that made the ABC Transportation reduce its fares for Nigerians, pointing out that the association was delighted over the initiative to construct the Second Niger Bridge as well as re-construct and expand the Lagos-Ibadan Express way. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/07/fg-to-link-geo-political-zones-with-dual-carriage-ways/
