good points for and against. but in general, i think it's still betta to stay in naija. meanwhile, some of the people supposedly doing well in yankee are into fraudulent stuff, anyways. and why do nigerians expect someone else to make the country betta? are all humans not born equal? every nigerian has a responsibility to contribute to naija's development instead of just heaping blames. even obasanjo was born poor.. |
i've been to Abeokuta, Ogun State where I grew up, Lagos, where i live, Ibadan, Abuja and Kano. Sharia has presence mainly in Kano town. But people are free enough in other towns. would really love to find time to travel all over the country.. |

Seun:IAH and mamba, thanks. your posts made my day!WesleyanA: this isn't an english report. it's an irrelevant post/blog so i really don't have to worry about grammar rules!WesleyanA, statements like that could get you banned on this forum. In particular, i give great kudos to the guy who composed the one IAH posted. |
the pleasure is mine the feeling is divine i'll never decline now, your rhymes shine! |
more reasons why i love opera? 1. you can drag a tab from one window to another window! infact you can drag an image from a web page to another web page or window.. 2. when it crashes, you can restart exactly from where you stopped, all your windows, all your tabs, all your pages loaded as if nothing happened! i confirmed all these today. there are many other features i cant list now. i am beginning to feel it is one of the best software i've used! and nairaland is one of the best sites i've used to. these are good times ![]() |
i wanna get married cos i want someone i can share everything with, someone i can learn to love unconditionally whether i want to or not. someone i can always forgive. someone that will do all these back to me. tell you the truth - i'm lonely, and i need someone that would be there for me all the time. and for heaven's sake, i cant wait to see what my kids will look like! |

@kazey, i guess. timmy:precisel. i was fortunate to listen to some advice before i went solo. i have a partner and he has been able to keep me in check to a large extent concerning decisions and finances. i am particularly not comfortable being the only one in charge. I believe in sharing the risks and sharing the profits. It is a proven approach.. |
@kazey, arent you confusing the joftech now? @joftech, let me tell you something. i really respect your point of view and the way you think. I understand exactly what you are talking about. Reading computer science in uni was a terrible experience - 70s curriculum etc. Extremely boring lecturers, etc. Zero room for innovation and imagination. I have also decided never to pursue Masters or PHD in Naija. Either one of the best schools in the world like Trinity College, MIT, Carltech or none. Infact, i'm not sure if i even want to go to higher institution anywhere! You know most pple posting here have a university degree (including me) so they can't really see things from your perspective. You have something very special probably even bigger than Gates', hold on tight to it, abeg. |
kazey:sorry, i was quoting kazey and not joftech |
i have to accept that i erred in the articulation of some of my points hence i beg to try again.. ok, i agree 100% that lack of food alone is NOT equal to poverty but is one of the major things that can contribute to it. If i cant afford to eat, i am definitely poor. also, i realise that this thread is primarily about unemployment. Poverty is just an extension of the topic. my point should be this: nigeria is not producing enough food because people are shunning agriculture. hence, i am suggesting that anyone who intends to create jobs should look more into agriculture. in the long run, he would be creating employment, making food available to more pple and bringing down the price of food so that there would be more money left over to acquire the other basic needs of life. i think all these contribute somehow to the reduction of poverty in nigeria. joftech:and i disagree with you here, unavailability of food etc is a basic indication of poverty |
joftech:i almost laughed there. see, let me tell you something. think about it. there is not enough food available in nigeria. so that even if we are all employed in other industries; because of the shortage of food, the price will keep rising becos of too much demand. and some pple will still not be able to buy the food. for example, why do we still import chicken, turkey etc illegally if we have enough food in nigeria? the illegal importation itself drives the price very high. etc. etc. |
Seun, i guess you are a sucker for perfection. The thread has not been spoilt. You are just getting to know members of this forum better.. One of the greatest challenges of communication is clarity. I cant even try to define entrepreneur, businessman and a self-employed person now unless i do a rigorous research in definitions and arrive at the most unarguable definitions. But, maybe exact definitions are not so important yet; even if i start alone, i have a plan of growing the business very big and employing a lot of pple in the future. so, you can call me an entrepreneur in waiting, hopefully.. ![]() |
well, point of note: SMEs are much bigger than the Mechanics etc.. Guess what, i was discussing with my bro this weekend and he hinted that the problem with nigeria is poverty - people cannot eat cos there is no food. Hence, the solution to poverty is provision of enough food. We need more people to go into agriculture - mechanised that is. So, maybe people should start seeking employment in agriculture so they can attack 2 of naija's main problems head on - unemployment and poverty |
kazey:kazey, when i read that i smiled knowingly. i was thinking this 1 1/2 years ago. anybody interested in this solution should feel free to contact me. so we could deliver this solution faster. there's no point being competitors.. ![]() |
well, seun, kazey. dont really get you guyz. an entrepreneur is someone who starts a business. often times, they start alone, as they do better, they employ pple. who says big is better anyways? bill gates started with a partner. they employed nobody initially and so on. bioye has a partner and hopefully, we'll do better, expand and employ. |
tcherokee: Stay where you are. Don't just say you want to start a company and quit your job to do it. You'll regret it.Well, it depends on what kind of business you want to do. I was watching CNN weekend and they had this special about Entrepreneurs. There was something like the ABC of Entrepreneurship: A Action B Business Plan C Cash Also, an expert said on the show that Entrepreneurs take big risks without doing detailed research and they are workaholics. I also believe in the saying Persistence Pays |
seun, thanks for the hint on text ads, and Hidden_Hunter, your website is most lovely. i agree opera is a lil bloated and to tell the truth, i still use IE and Firefox. Also, multiple browsers allow 3 different people to log in to the same website at the same time blah blah.. |
My own experience: I graduated 2000, worked for an IT firm for 3 years and went solo 2004. I must say I am not moving as fast as I want in my business, but I'm highly hopeful I will get there. I hope to source for more capital when my solution is presentable enough via the SMIES <editor: Small and Medium Enterprises Equity Investment Scheme> or other means. Being a software developer, I don't have serious problems with infrastructure. I have a good generator and spend a few thousands on fuel and for me, the cost is not too high. The greatest challenge I have is being highly organised, highly disciplined, and getting enough capital to employ people to delegate some lesser tasks to. |
The Entrepreneurs The goal of this thread is to share ideas about starting up a company. Do you want to start a new company? Have you started a company? Are you looking for venture capital? Let's share ideas about the challenges of starting a business in Nigeria today. |
i keep to the rule: what is worth doing is worth doing well. i doubt anyone here has enough practical experience to be so sure about investing. i am comfortable taking the risks in the market. Heck - everything in life is a risk! And I think i would learn from experience and get better. Because there are good investors and there are excellent investors big or small. Infact, i think everyone should learn from personal experience. if you are too scared, invest little. But do it full-heartedly.. |
Seun:Seun, let me ask you a question - do you want your company to grow big and have more shareholders? Do you want to go public one day on the Stock Market and raise funds to expand? If yes, would you expect the prospective investors to think like you? |
funny, it appears our dear government have solutions to all these problems both theoretically and practically. Though, i said i knew not the solution to the moral decay, maybe we have mentioned the solution. The moral decay results in corruption. Enforcing the Rule of Law may be the solution. If you know you would be caught and dealt with if you commit a crime, you would either not do it, or be caught or have to be extremely smart to get away. The government has attacked corruption by establishing Due Process, ICPC and EFCC. But they still have a lot of work to do - the Police need to be hastily overhauled, Prison Reforms must get underway soonest. The courts should have enough courtrooms and judges and equipment to handle cases for the thousands of detainees languishing away in detention without trial etc etc. And alas, can you see more employment here? More law graduates get opportunities to be employed! Now, the Federal Government is doing something. What are the States and Local Governments doing? The Federal Government has no jusrisdiction over them. And I suspect they are the most corrupt executive arm of government today. |

? This is an area that needs exploring. Real time stock exchange, information rendering. Forget the Stock Exchange website and just start you own, with real time feeds, and charge members reasonable fees, and have partnership with stock brokers for example to be providing the extra services, such as buying and selling stocks. Thanks joftech, for making this known.
