Well, we all used IE (was using 6.0) - the spyware, the popups, the infinite windows opening.

Then I used Mozilla because I was told it was lightning fast, then I couldnt login to yahoo mail.

Then I used Mozilla Firefox because it was supposed to be a cleaner implementation to Mozilla.

Then I still wanted more speed, and I found out factually that Opera is the fastest browser ever @ Browser Speed Comparisons. Opera also has some super features in tabbed browsing that Firefox does not have etc.

So, the long and short is: Opera is my current choice.

Nice post, Ka.  Really, in order not to turn the discussion into an argument, I'll just rephrase that the solutions to the problem of unemployment include:

1.  Basic infrastructure.
2.  Education.
3.  Rule of law.

In fact, about the rule of law, I had mentioned this in a previous post about the police at: https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-297.0.html#msg14130

Now, I can't say categorically which of the 3 should take priority or if there is infact a preferable solution to all 3 for now.  hopefully, if we can lay our hands on real facts and statistics, we can understand the problem better and recommend solutions.  Hence, I see this discussion as an opportunity to understand, learn and discover the real issues facing our dear nation.
InvestmentRe: Stock Market Investment for Nigerian Youths? by bioye(m): 10:13pm On Jul 22, 2005
well, despite your fears, seun, a lot of people make a lot of money from the stock market.  all you have to do is look at the price chart of companies like conoil and zenith etc.  And you would be shocked how your money could have doubled within a month or thereabouts.

the real point is that: what is worth doing is worth doing well.  like you said, if you knew some info about a company, maybe you could invest.  it is the job of an investor to study a list of companies, choose the ones with the best prospects, and invest wisely.  companies like FirstBank, Nigerian Breweries, Conoil, Nestle have a superb track record.  They publish their accounts regularly for the public to see and they have delivered consistent dividends in addition to share price appreciation.  All the info is there..

i invest in stocks and i invest in my startup.  about savings, well, banks liquidate!! and maybe my bank could be cheating me like you indicated in a thread you started.
CareerRe: Unemployment and the Population of Nigeria by bioye(m): 9:52pm On Jul 21, 2005
yes, education is the solution. not only to unemployment but to all of nigeria's problems. Unemployment is a symptom. Infrastructure is an anecdote.. Low quality human resources is the problem. education is the only long-term cure.

even, the US has a similar problem today.
CareerRe: Unemployment and the Population of Nigeria by bioye(m): 7:46pm On Jul 21, 2005
kazey,

too bad you did not get the message. I say the Nigerian government should invest in education so that Nigerians in general can be better skilled and create more value be it building roads, managing accounts, becoming entrepreneurs or whateva. The bottomline is Nigerians are not educated and capable enough in general to become entrepreneurs or any other stuff. It's not the population, it's the quality of the population

When i say invest, it does not mean the only way government can help is spend money, they could create policies that make it more conducive for the masses to get educated and improve themselves. I believe a lot in privatisation. it will go a long way in tackling most of the problem.. but it wont solve all the problems.... Tell me have you seen the state of public schools all over the country particularly lagos? That's where many of our youth are being trained!!

you mention globacom, how many people do they employ compared to the population of nigeria? infact, do you know how many nigerians are unemployed because they just aint capable? how many companies have gone down because of incapable human resources?
CareerRe: Unemployment and the Population of Nigeria by bioye(m): 6:35pm On Jul 21, 2005
hmm, this is a very important topic and i hope i stay within the subject..

the topic touches on population and unemployment.
note that population by itself is a good thing. one of the indices of measuring a country's strength is its population. If we were to go to war with a less-populated country, we have a higher chance of winning. That is what China and India have.

Now, i think the major problem we have in Nigeria is the quality of our human resources which boils down to 1. raw talent 2. education 3. morals

Someone mentioned basic infrastructure, you have a point but remember that it's a company that will execute the contract for that infrastructure, it's people that will maintain it. If the people in charge are not adequate, the infrastructure will either be badly done a la Nitel or badly maintained a la Nigerian Roads.

Our government needs to invest massively in improving our human resources - schools, morals etc. It is the surest way to make Nigeria grow. What good is a natural resource like oil if there are no human resources to maximise value from it?

Nairaland GeneralRe: The Nigerian Police Force: How do you view them? by bioye(m): 7:38pm On Jul 17, 2005
you see, the nigeria police is one of many problems we have in nigeria. it may be best for us if we treat it as part of a larger problem. Many nigerians are corrupt; remember that these policemen are not another specie of people. they are nigerians related to many of us. the problem becomes amplified because these people have killing weapons. The problem is analogous to the military taking over executive power of a country. Corruption is mother of all these occurences.

If we improve the quality of nigerians in general, we improve the quality of nigeria police. the problem of nigeria is not natural resource. it is human resource.

how do we improve the quality of nigerians in general? by investing massively in education. our budgets needs to allocate more to education. if our students are trained better, they perform better. formal education improves people's technical quality. What about morals? A first-class product may deliver on the job, but he may still be corrupt? I am yet to fathom a solution to the moral decay.

then, we also need to invest in the rule of law. Whenever someone commits a crime, the person must be dealt with seriously to deter others from doing so. The constitution, the courts, the police(now, i'm shooting myself in the foot). During Babangida's days, many a people were rewarded for being corrupt, and many a children followed suit. Now, that was real bad..

Let me take a pause here..

Also my bro says some shops at Falomo in Ikoyi sell original CDs for cheaper prices.
EntertainmentRe: Original CD/DVD Music and Movies in Nigeria by bioye(m): 7:06pm On Jul 17, 2005
Nu Metro (or what's the spelling?) at Silverbird Cinemas sells Nigerian Musical CDs and Movie CDs. My brother says very popular Music CDs go for N530 while less popular ones go for N350. American Audio CDs go for N1,000 and N2,500.
PoliticsRe: Why is Obasanjo Nigerian masses worst nightmare by bioye(m): 7:03pm On Jul 17, 2005
Well, i have realised that so far in the history of Nigeria, Obasanjo is the best head of state we've ever had. I hope Nigerians can look beyond a man's face and at the issues ravaging this nation. Someone says Atiku does not trust Obasanjo, are you making a case for Atiku? Well, as a matter of fact, Obasanjo does not trust Atiku because he is the most corrupt politician in government and if Obasanjo had his way, he would have booted him out. It's almost impossible to level any corruption charges against Obasanjo because there may be none.

Seun, i appreciate the maturity with which you responded to Red's post..

we will go to a nice building. i will tell her to stay outside and i will go inside. then i will call her from the top of the building. and i will..... jump. yeah, it's a matter of life and death. so, as she cries her eyes out, and people open their mouths in shock, just as i'm about to drop dead, the parachute opens with the bold words Will You Marry Me?.

This is not original. i saw it in a musical video..
PoliticsRe: Against Babangida.com Website by bioye(m): 10:59pm On Jul 14, 2005
i dont believe the website is a joke, and i am happy nigerians are doing this. i read in the guardian not too long ago that a british paper (Daily Telegraph?) reported that past nigerian leaders stole 222 billion pounds which equates to about 300 years worth of aid from UK to the whole of Africa. The article mentions Abacha but does not mention Babangida and all the past head of states that are still alive.

It is sad that our press and publicity today speak loud against Abacha and Obasanjo but are rather lukewarm about Babangida, the most dangerous man walking the streets of nigeria free. infact, i am scared some people are tracking these posts, i just wonder.

some people say every nigerian has a right to contest. Well, maybe. But i believe every nigerian should be emotional about our dear country. i love nigeria with all my heart unconditionally. i am not happy when people do or plan to make it worse. People suffer, the children who have no sin that roam the streets begging, dying....

we owe ourselves, we owe the children of tomorrow, our children, the right to smile, the right to minimum joy, the right to the basic things of life. Obasanjo is a single man born one, same with Babangida, same with you, same with me. All mean are equal, and we can equally make a change.

Let us stop this man!
InvestmentRe: Investors in the Nigerian Stock Market by bioye(op): 10:42pm On Jul 14, 2005
In general, i believe if you are to invest in the stock market, you either to choose to be an active trader and make profit from the rise and fall of shares or you depend on dividends. To maximimise profit from either option, you may need to keep buying and selling. Now, i am not a professional or experienced stockbroker but i have some ideas.

To be a good investor takes some work. You have to watch the stock market regularly and do analysis. The papers or tv do a bad job. There are some nice websites that provide a lot of good information e.g: www.cashcraft.com, www.experesson-line.com and www.africanfinancialmarkets.com for stock information and www.allafrica.com for company news.

From my point of view, a good approach for someone interesting in momentum investing (active trading to make profits) should select stocks whose graphs show regular rises and falls within weeks or months. The they should wait for the share to drop low, buy, wait for it to rise and sell. Just watch the charts!

Now, after shortlisting shares that rise and fall, you may want to check out the company to see if it's healthy. Look for the results for the past 4 quarters. Cashcraft arranges different equities based on various performance indices eg. dividend yield, Price Earnings Ratio(PE), Earnings Per Share(EPS). These can help you discover healthy companies.

But i think by the time you get used to regular study of the market and you have a good stockbroker, it's fairly easy to make a lot of money. I guess i have to prove this to be true in practice first!

Anybody has other ideas?

Nairaland GeneralRe: Finding True Friends by bioye(m): 9:57pm On Jul 13, 2005
this is a lovely thread and all the above posts are so nice....

i think whenever one feels lonely and as if one has no friend, the best thing is to try to give rather than receive. try to think of someone who needs a friend more than you or just try to help somebody. i believe in the process of making someone else happy, one will get joy reflected back. And if you learn to this often, you will surprisingly start having more true friends than you even expected..

this is a hypothesis, and i'd love to put it to test..

Hi. Was wondering if any of us invests in the stock market and what kind of investor you are. Do you use online investment sites? Do you make money by making profit from buying/ selling shares or you prefer to wait for dividends and bonus issues?

Let's discuss and maybe we can help improve one another's investment profits!
BusinessRe: Investing in A Nigerian Bank by bioye(m): 8:49pm On Jul 13, 2005
Well, the thing is no matter how cheap a share is, it can go up or go down. i bought Nigerian Breweries at 60 naira last year and now it is 27 naira or something. i bought Zenith at N10.90 and now it is about N15. I personally dont rush after Public Offers for now because the time before you can start trading for me is too long. I had to wait for more than 2 months before GTB's shares became active for trading on the stock market!

Anyways, my advice is that before you buy a share, do a little research. Talk to people with some investment experience. Look at the company's performance in the past, etc. You know, the kind of info you find out before you buy a dress - the quality, the size, if it's really worth it. etc. etc.

That's what i think..
