President Muhammadu Buhari has charged the Nigerian media to be responsible in their use of the press freedom being enjoyed under the current democratic dispensation.

He stressed that from the outset of his administration in 2015, it was made clear that ‘‘press freedom is an irreducible minimum in a democracy that would flourish’’, adding however that such freedom must be used responsibly.

The president, in a release on Friday by his spokesman, Garba Shehu, congratulated the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) on the outcome of their seventh triennial delegates’ conference which saw the re-election of Chris Isiguzo for a second term in office as president.

Considering the formidable role the media play in shaping and influencing the course of events in any society, the president reminded the NUJ leadership that the country will continue to look up to their members for fair, balanced and objective journalism.

President Buhari urged the media to forge greater unity in the union, engage in productive dialogue to resolve any issue inimical to the progress of the association.

The president assured the newly elected executives that the current administration will uphold and unrelentingly safeguard the watchdog role provided for the media in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

THE Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger-Delta, MEND, fell apart, today, with President Muhammadu Buhari, passing a vote of no confidence on his government, especially with regards to his handling of the current Niger-Delta crisis.

MEND’s condemnation of Buhari government contained in a statement by its spokesperson, Jomo Gbomo, came as a surprise, as the militant group supported him in the 2015 election against former President Goodluck Jonathan until yesterday.

In a statement, the group said: “Without prejudice to the pre- 2015 Presidential election endorsement freely and voluntarily given to President Muhammadu Buhari on January 6, 2015, the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) hereby categorically and unequivocally pass a vote of no confidence on the government of President Buhari; specifically with regard to the government’s handling of the current Niger Delta crisis.”

Describing President Buhari as sly, the group said: “We hereby demand that President Muhammadu Buhari must put a stop to his cunning, crafty and un-statesman rhetoric about the Niger Delta region as they have only served the purpose of jeopardizing the fragile peace in the region.”

It also urged him to “direct the relevant agency of government to immediately commence dialogue with the Niger Delta region; as duly and ably represented by PANDEF.”

According to the organisation, International human rights organisations, international media organisations as well as well as other foreign observers will storm Abuja for the trial.

ABEOKUTA- A 33-year-old man, Segun Ogunlusi has explained why he stabbed his 60-year-old mother, Abimbola Ogunlusi to death, claiming his mother was pestering him to have sex with her.

Ogunlusi who was paraded at the Ogun State police command headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta, on Tuesday by the state police commissioner, Ahmed Iliyasu, alongside 23 other suspects who were held for alleged armed robbery, cultism, and kidnapping, confessed that he killed her because she was persistently asking him for sex.

The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday 13th December, 2016 at Number 16, Oketunde Street, Molatori, Ogijo, Sagamu Local Government Area of the state.

While fielding questions from newsmen during the parade,the suspect said she was provoked by her mother’s alleged incesssant demand for sex.

He said, “I killed my mother because she has been demanding sex persistently from me .She said if I had sex with her I would bé free. On a particular Tuesday morning, when two of us were at home, she was in the kitchen, I walked up to her and stabbed her in the stomach and she died. ...
