For the religion poisons everything... even the most learned of wigs.

It's so unfortunate that while other nations are progressing, hijab is causing a national reaction in Nigeria.

Mine is just like yours. Went to see a Doctor several times and they kept telling me the thing would leave when I get more matured. I am 22.

These are some of the things they recommend for me and I can say they are working. You can try them out too.;

Watch your face with Dettol soap every morning and and when you want to go to bed in the night.
After washing, apply the concentrated Dettol liquid antiseptic to your face. this hurts a bit.
Get doxycline hyclate and use one capsule every four hours.
Do not apply any cream to the face except it's recommended by the doc.
also, maintain a very good hygiene.
good luck.
ps:dont be too worried about it. like your mum said, it will leave when your hormones get stronger to combat it

YOUR ADVICE IS NEEDED: I AM BEEN PRESSURED TO GET MARRIED AND ALSO CHANGING MY RELIGION

"I wonder why she should be pressuring me to change my religion before getting married to her. I sorted an advice from a pastor, and I was told that she was not the woman for me. That i will have problems along the marriage. After I few consideration, I decided to also sort for advice from Nairalanders.

I am a muslim and my woman is a christian. She is forcing me to change my religion which i have been practicing since childhood. Taking such a decision is not that easy you know. To change my religion because of a woman? I don't think it is right. She has also refuse to change to my religion. Now, her family are pressuring and want me to change my religion. I am writing this to seek advice from Nairalanders to give me direction to follow... I know many will yab, insult or in-sugar me... I just need a candid advice."

How about dropping the religion and persuade her to drop hers? you guys would enjoy your marriage without religion.

Religion / Re: My Thoughts And Questions About Religion by Blaqsmith(m): 4:21pm On Feb 20, 2017
joseph1013:
BREAKING OUR INTUITIONS

Saw a debate a short while ago about the origin of the universe and how to find out what happenes. So, permit me to rant a little.

Sometimes looking backwards can give us insight into the future. There are things we understand today that would have been incomprehensible, even absurd, to people in the past.

The idea that the Earth could be spherical was once totally counterintuitive--surely people on the underside of the Earth would fall off? It made no sense.

Another such idea is that the Earth is not supported by anything. Surely, the Earth HAS to be supported or it would fall? If we look at ancient "cosmology" we find attempts to explain this mystery. The Earth was said to be flat and supported by turtles, elephants, gods, pillars, or hanging by a thread.

Then we discovered gravity and found a mechanism that allows spherical, unsupported planets to make perfect sense. Nowadays we don't give it a second thought--the counterintuitive has become intuitive. It's hard now to imagine how a planet supported by something could ever have made sense. That idea has become so silly that even children laugh at it.

When we look around us, we find many things that were once thought intuitively impossible but are now commonplace and obvious. Take for example, the idea of sending invisible messages thousands of miles at the speed of light and even passing them through solid walls. This became possible when we discovered electromagnetic radiation and learnt how to use it. Today, the world is alight with EM radiation passing radio, TV and mobile 'phone messages around the world.

Most fundamental shifts in our understanding are brought about by discovering something we previously did not know existed, such as gravity or EM radiation.

Is it likely there are more things we have yet to discover? Definitely. For example, we know there is something we call dark matter but we have no idea what it is or where it came from--calculations just show that something exists. Maybe discovering what dark matter is will again change our perception of what is intuitive and what is counterintuitive.

Intuition is useful but we must recognise its limitations--intuition is based on the world we are familiar with and once we move beyond that world, it may let us down. That is why I shake my head when religious people insist a universe cannot create itself--it's obvious they say!

Well, it is not obvious. Our intuitions are unlikely to extend to the beginning of the universe before there was matter and before there were atoms or even electrons. We already know the world of the very tiny, the quantum world, is strange and counterintuitive and the pre-quantum world may be even stranger.

So let's leave playground philosophising behind us. The job of discovering what happened 13.7 billion years ago is not one that our fallible intuitions will help us with. It is a job for high tech particle accelerators, massive computing power, advanced mathematics and the smartest brains on the planet.

It is unlikely that partisan speculation on Nairaland will help very much.

Politics / Re: "Wike And Fayose Have Brought Shame To PDP" - Ali Modu Sheriff by Blaqsmith(m): 11:49am On Feb 19, 2017
kjhova:
The origin of PDP's downfall is long before Alli Modu Sheriff and even long before the loss of the presidential elections. The party crashed from 2013 when GEJ decided to hijack the entire party machinery to support his 2015 presidential bid.

GEJ brought back Fayose from party doldrums and funded his gubernatorial ambitions with federal monies illegally siphoned from the defence budget. Thus Fayose became an influential voice in the party over saner minds.

GEJ bought over Fani-Kayode from the wastelands of APC desert and made him his campaign spokesman, handing over the entire PDP media machinery to him with little check or control to his enemy making madness.

GEJ chose to meddle in the Governors' forum elections to cut down Amaechi's influence. It backfired badly and resulted in PDP loosing 5 sitting governors to APC in the eve of a major election.

GEJ's campaign folks did much damage to PDP's chances nationwide by referring to Hausas and Fulanis as pests, cows, parasites etc...referring to Yorubas as slaves, cowards etc. They also based their campaign on attacking Buhari and little more. They therefore made it harder for anyone to sell PDP in positive light outside the SE & SS.

After the electoral loss, Fayose and Wike singlehandedly rallied to hand the party over to Alli Modu Sheriff as interim chairman until a later convention. This same Sheriff had been accused severally of being the originator of Boko Haram. This same Sheriff frustrated Buhari out of ANPP. This same Sheriff joined APC but was later welcomed back into PDP by GEJ for odd reasons. Why did Fayose and Wike conspire to force such an odious and shape shifting character on a party at the point when the party desperately needed a surgical operation to bring it back to its feet after a disastrous electoral loss? The answer is simple.

Alli Modu is stupendous wealthy and has a vast political network. Wike and Fayose had hoped to ride on Sheriff's back to take over the party to push for their 2019 personal agendas. This has backfired as it was pure folly ab initio.

Sheriff is a wild animal and you cannot ride a tiger to your safety.

Alli Modu Sheriff is not an APC mole, no, he is FAYOSE and WIKE's biggest political mistake ever which is a continuation of GEJ's gross mistake.

Adieu PDP.

Religion / Re: The Meaninglessness Of Human Existence And The Immortality Of Religion. by Blaqsmith(m): 11:10am On Nov 22, 2016
GrizzlyBear:
Intellectual honesty demands that we be sincere in all our contemplation and discussions about ourselves and our world, despite the perceived bleakness or harshness of the truth. It demands that we present a version of this truth, that is unbiased and unadulterated.

When examining the issue of our existence, we should also parse this timeless and cardinal subject with the tools of intellectual honesty.

When one accepts the non-existence of God, he has also tacitly subscribed to the notion of the objective meaninglessness of human existence. Because if God does not exist, then human existence has no objective meaning. Objective meaning in this context signifies a universally all encompassing truth about the reason for our existence.

It means that we are basically just biological creatures, jettisoned into this small, inconsequential planet in a galaxy among infinite galaxies, to live, pass on our genes, and die. We are practically just vessels for genes and proliferation of life. And everything that happens in our lives, is just a vain endless struggle for survival. It means that the universe doesn't care about us and everything that happens in our world is futile and of no inherent meaning.

A nonexistence of an objective meaning for our existence also suggests a nonexistence of objective morality. It means that there is no universal, axiomatic set of moral principles, and our definition and notions of morality, are relative and subjective.

Anyone who arrives at this philosophical realization, would definitely feel a painful sting of despair. Such understanding could engender a cascade of negative feelings that could prompt such a person to give up on life. Undoubtedly, the understanding of the objective meaninglessness of life and the futility of human existence, is the heaviest intellectual burden for man to shoulder.

But still, there are two ways humans can deal with this grim existential realization and loosen the burden.
We could embrace the objective meaninglessness of life, and create a subjective one for ourselves, or we could lapse into denial, and supplant the truth with consoling lies. History has shown that man has always preferred the second option, not to say that the first option is the logical one to take. Actually, both options are both illogical. The first option at it's face, seems like a fulfilling substitute, but is it? Of course not. It's not fulfilling. It never is. It's cowardice and a bashful attempt to circumvent the realities of truth. It's deciding to live a hedonistic existence of vain delusion and comforting untruths.

Proponents of the first option tend to emphasize living in the present and enjoying it's benefits, but can we actually enjoy this present? The present presents it's share of pain and despair, which in most cases eclipses the intermittent ephemeral happiness. Given the unremitting presence of the agonizing existential understanding of the futility of our lives and the acknowledgement of it's bleak end, and the immanate vanity of the actions that precede it, the present will always be a sad, painful experience, interspersed with horrifying uncertainties.

Humans have the natural tendency to develop hostility towards anything that threatens their sense of self. We have been hard wired with the aptitude to develop resentment for things that tend to lower how we perceive ourselves. The realization that we are experiencing an existence of no objective meaning, lowers our sense of self. It portrays us as objects with no real purpose, no different from animals we perceive as inferior creatures. The default reaction to a notion like this, is complete rejection, and the creation of a framework that persistently reinforces this rejection. The most efficient framework that bolsters this rejection, is the framework of religion.

The framework of religion is so effective because it reinforces the rejection of the futility of our existence, by claiming for itself the objective meaning for human existence. It also solves the problem of the non existence of objective morality, as it provides a set objective moral codes for it's adherents to subscribe to.

Religion tends to the most difficult problem around existence and meaning, which is what happens after humans die. It does this by painting a dichotomous picture of the after life, one that is pleasing enough to entice people, but at the same time scary enough to elicit obedience and devotion.

In the face of our existential angst, religion seems a more preferable path to tread. It's an escape from the true horrors of reality and the agonizing acknowledgement of the futility of our existence. It gives people a reason to live. It gives people hope. It makes people feel special. Religion is truly the opium of the masses, because it helps alleviate their pain, by consoling and comforting them with dreams and hopes. It gives people a reason to be moral, a reason to do good. It's a rope that prevents people from falling into the torturing pits of truth.

Not everyone is intellectually strong to carry the weight of the acceptance of the objective meaninglessness of human existence. Some people are just weak and need religion to rescue them from shouldering this excrutiatingly heavy burden.

For this reason, religion will always exist and continue to persist. Despite the overwhelming avalanche of tenable arguments that will be put forward against it, despite the flaws and glaring contradictions that would be pointed, despite the overt negative effects that is observable in our society, religion will always have subscribers. People find it hard to let go of something that comforts them, and they will aggressively defend it against anything that tries to take their source of comfort and happiness from them, even reason.
Thought-provoking!

This is why many atheists see religion as a mental and psychological ailment that robs the mind and leaves the body weak, thereby leaving gulf of space for exploitation by con artistes who masquerade as God's spokespersons.

All am telling you man, is that you should cut a troubled mind some slack. That's what a therapist would do. You are calm and normal and can reason properly but he is troubled and not in the best emotions. You really wana hold an academic or reasonable dialogue in that state? Comfort the troubled first, appreciate his situation and as you have been in that state before, try to relate to his needs. He is disillusioned with religion and he feels he is on the path to atheism. Being born into religion, naturally he will have his worries. Our least fair action will be to assist him the best we can to reach closure on this matter.
I'm no therapist. But anyway, I'm sorry if my words look hard even though that's not my intention.

Hey @Blaqsmith, I think you are being a little too hard on @Mercykayy.

He is troubled and for once in his life he is beginning to question the assumptions he has always held as fact. This state is where everyone born into religion begins the journey potentially to atheism. So even if he is not exactly an atheist yet, he may surely well be on the path to being one.

Dear @OP, I was in your state in '92. It took me a very long time till 2002 to become a convinced atheist. I tried hard to rationalise religion but ended with the reality that religion is only man's attempt at explaining his existence in this plane. Being so long in religion, you may be troubled to take the leap out. Take your time, think about it, engage people; both religious and atheist. In the meantime, enjoy your life, leave a just life, appreciate the world and show respect to nature. Do what is right by your conscience and believe me, you'd be just fine.

You may be scared of going to hell at first, if you are given to superstition, but soon you'd come to realise that the concept of a god burning billions in fire forever is beyond absurd and is thankfully only restricted to Christianity and Islam. Also take an interest in space and our on-going exploration of Mars and the universe beyond. It has proven to be so refreshing for me.

Finally, your way of life and general behaviour must reflect your rational state of mind. I mean display a good behaviour always and let the brain in your cranium show through always.
No. Not at all sir. I wasn't any hard.

My statement might look hard but it was only to understand the OP's standpoint more.
I was once in his shoe, but walked a different path.

Nigerian parents won't take that and it might result to adverse effect on your well being. Nevertheless, you are still their son and they still love you, only that they are ignorant that change in belief doesn't mean change in personality.

Thanks. I just don't like going to Churches. And when anyone mentions praying or anything about the Bible or anything in it, it makes me feel its thrash. and lots more.
Well, that reason doesn't make you an atheist.

I'm an atheist and I still attend church service when I want. I read the bible at times and ponder on some words in it. I believe there are many people like me that are atheists and still do the same thing. Even pastors.

Just like I said earlier; disappointments, not going to church, sense of apathy against the bible, and lots more reasons one might wanna grasp on to to claim the tag "atheist" aren't what atheism espouse. Rather, it is simply a lack of belief in the existence of god or any deity.

Do you believe in God?
That will tell us a lot about you.

let's talk about me, not my sister pls. if you've got any question to ask, you're so free to ask me.
You become an atheist when you don't have belief in god/gods. Though this has no effect on the well being of your sister, but from your words up there, I see you drop your faith because god has not been able to heal your sick sister.

All way to atheism is always a way, but I doubt if the way you've chosen is the best way. Lack of evidence for the existence of a god is what makes many people become atheists, not really disappointments as your case looks like.
Would you become a theist again if your sister gets well because a pastor lays hands on her?
