The Police in Ogun State has arrested a man who molests fellow men sexually while pretending to be a spirit, Igbere TV reports.

Igbere TV gathered that the 'spirit' was arrested around Atan area of the state by Operatives of Zone 2, comprising Lagos and Ogun States command.

Igbere TV learnt that the 34-year-old suspect, Justin Edward, usually wore a mask, while perpetrating the evil act.

His mode of operation included laying ambush for his male targets at strategic points. When he sees a prey, he comes out of hiding, pretending to be a spirit from the cemetery.

Thereafter, he would drag his victim to a convenient place, where he would have sexual intercourse with them.

Police Spokesman, DSP Hauwa Idris, who confirmed the report, said the suspect was arrested on July 20, following intelligence report on his escapades.

“He was found with three facial masks, upon arrest. He confessed to have had sexual intercourse with five men.

“Investigation is in progress, while efforts are on to get other members of his gang,” the Police spokesman added.

The Federal Government, States and Local Government Councils, have shared a total of N762.597 billion as Federal Allocation for the month of June 2019, Igbere TV reports.

This was contained in a communiqué sent to Igbere TV by the Federation Accounts Allocation Committee, FAAC, on Thursday.

The document which was signed by the Accountant General of the Federation, noted that revenue from Petroleum Profit Tax (PPT) and Companies Income Tax (CIT) increased significantly.

This is even as the communiqué indicated that the gross statutory revenue of N652.949 billion received for July was higher than the N571.731 billion received in June by N81.218 billion.

It also noted that the shared amount comprises the month’s statutory distributable revenue of N652.949 billion adding that the gross revenue available from the Value Added Tax (VAT) is N108.631 billion as against N106.826 billion distributed in the previous month, thus resulting in an increase of N1.805 billion.

“Value Added Tax (VAT) increased marginally while royalties, import and excise duties decreased considerably. Thus, the total revenue distributable for the current month (including VAT and Exchange Gain) is N762.597 billion.

“Furthermore, from Net Statutory revenue, Federal Government received N309.433 billion representing (52.68 percent): States Government received N201.157 billion (26.72 percent); Local Government Councils received N151.384 billion representing (20.60 percent}, while the Oil producing States received N 38.705 billion (35 percent) as 13 percent derivation revenue.

“From the Revenue available from the Value Added Tax (VAT), the federal government received N15.643 billion (15 percent), States received N52.143 billion (50 percent) while the Local Government Councils received N36.500 billion (35 percent).

“Consequently the total revenue distributable for the month of June including VAT is N762.597 billion.

“The Excess Crude balance as at today, 25th July, 2019 is $111.204 Million,” the communiqué read in part.

Igbere TV had earlier reported that Femi Gbajabiamila, Speaker of the House of Representatives, today, announced the composition of the Chairmanship of the various Standing Committees.

This is even as 13 additional Committees were introduced, increasing the number from the existing 96 to 109.

However, the name of Gbajabiamila’s Campaign Director, Abdulmummin Jubrin, was conspicuously missing in the list of Committee Chairman.

While Muktar Betara Aliyu was named Chairman of the Appropriation Committee, Oluwole Oke emerged Chairman, Committee on Public Accounts.

Others were James Faleke (Chairman, House Committee on Finance), AbdulRasak Namdas (Chairman of Committee on Army), Nicholas Mutu (Chairman, Committee on Gas Resources), Tunji Ojo (Chairman of the NDDC Committee) and Tajudeen Abbas (Chairman, House Committee on Land Transport).

Igbere TV reports that the setting up of the Committees followed the adoption of a report by an ad-hoc committee reviewing the House Standing Order during today's plenary.

Miss Olivia and Nicole Kalu, were today received by Senate President, Senator Ahmad Lawan, in his office, Abuja.

Igbere TV reports that Olivia and Nicole are daughters of Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, Chief Whip of the Nigerian Senate.

Our National Assembly correspondent reports that the duo were at the Red Chamber to observe today's plenary.

They were led to Senator Lawan’s office by their father, Senator Kalu, and were ushered in by the Senate President.

LAGOS — Chief Whip of the Nigerian Senate, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, on Monday, opened his defence in an alleged N7.6 billion fraud trial, Igbere TV reports.

Igbere TV reports that the case involves the former Governor of Abia State Abia and two others.

The case is before Justice Mohammed Idris of the Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos.

Kalu is standing trial alongside his former Finance Commissioner, Ude Udeogu, and company, SLOK Nigeria Limited, on a 39-count charge bordering on money laundering.

Senator Kalu representing Abia North Senatorial District, allegedly committed the offence between August 2001 and October 2005 when he was governor.

The case was suspended after the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), May 11, 2018 through its counsel, Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), closed its case after calling 19 witnesses.

However, the President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa, recently, issued a fresh fiat to Justice Idris to conclude the case.

At yesterday's sitting, Kalu’s lawyer, Awa Kalu (SAN), told the court that he received a letter from the prosecution informing him of the resumption of the case.

He said also that he had informed Justice Idris that he would not be available in court due to his involvement in some election petition matters.

He, however, said that he had to appear out of the respect he had for the court so as to explain his predicament in person.

Kalu, SAN also told the court that he had to rush down to Lagos from Abuja without the case file due to the fact that his Secretary, whom he said was bereaved, could not prepare the case file.

He, therefore, asked the court for a short adjournment for the defence to open its case which was at first rejected by the court.

Responding, Justice Idris said there waa a prior notice to all the parties in the matter, stating that the hearing of the case should resume.

Kalu, SAN thereafter, took to the dock to open his defence.

Led in evidence by his counsel, Orji Kalu told the court his name and stated that he was a manufacturer of home goods until he resigned some weeks ago to become a Senator.

He also told the court that he had pleaded “not guilty” to all the 39-count charges preferred against him by the EFCC and that he was aware that the trial was a joint trial involving Ude Udeogo and SLOK Nigeria Limited.

Kalu’s lawyer, at that point, re-applied for an adjournment of the case.

Justice Idris granted the prayer and adjourned the case to August 26, 2019 for continuation of defence.

He, however, ruled that “the proceedings will continue on a day-to-day basis till it is concluded.”

Igbere TV reports that the second and third defendants, Udeogo and SLOK Nigeria Limited were not represented in court for Monday's proceedings.

COZA: Why We Invited Dakolo, Wife For Questioning — Police

The Nigeria Police has officially confirmed that singer Timi Dakolo and wife, Busola were invited for questioning at the Force headquarters, Abuja, Igbere TV reports.

The police also ‘technically’ reacted to the alleged invasion of Dakolo’s residence by armed officers. It said its operatives had on Saturday, served the invitation letter on the duo.

Igbere TV reports that Timi Dakolo, on Saturday, took to his Instagram page to raise an alarm over a “strange bus” that parked in front of his house.

According to the singer, the occupants of the bus were armed with guns.

He posted a photo of the bus - a Toyota Hiace - with registration number Lagos BR932KSF.

Reacting in a statement sent to Igbere TV, the Force Public Relations Officer (PRO), DCP Frank Mba said police operatives, on Saturday, served the singer and wife, Busola invitation letter.

This confirms earlier report that the police headquarters, Abuja had invited the duo for questioning over rape allegations against a clergyman.

Igbere TV reports that wife of Timi Dakolo, Busola, had accused the presiding pastor of Commonwealth of Zion Assembly (COZA), Biodun Fatoyinbo, of rape.

While confirming the authenticity of the letter served on Dakolo and wife, DCP Mba said the invitation should not be mistaken for arrest warrant.

The police, therefore, appealed for calm, while assuring that justice will be done in the case and others pending before it.

“The Nigeria Police Force is confirming that its operatives today, 20th July, 2019 served official Invitation Letters on Bisola and Timi Dakolo.

“The invitation is sequel to an on-going police investigation touching on the wider and highly publicized case involving Bisola Dakolo, Pastor Biodun Fatoyinbo and others.

“It is important however to note that a Police Invitation Letter is not synonymous with a Warrant of Arrest, and must not be construed to be one. Rather, it is a polite investigative tool used in eliciting information voluntarily from parties to aid police investigations.

“Members of the public should see it as a legitimate act in line with the constitutional mandate of the police, which among other things include the investigation of all complaints brought before it.

“The Inspector General of Police, IGP MA Adamu NPM, mni has appealed for calm, and is reassuring Nigerians that the Police Force under his watch will remain professional, impartial and unreservedly committed to the pursuit of justice in this case and all other cases before it.”

Over 100 residents of Jirrawa community in Kaura-Namoda Local Government Area of Zamfara State yesterday stormed the Government House, Gusau, with the dead body of an alleged victim of the latest assault on the community by bandits.

The victim was killed yesterday, according to spokespersons for the community, Muntari Abdullahi and Muhammadu Sani.


They told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the bandits invaded the village around 10am and shot sporadically in the air.

“We later realised that they had already killed Shafiu Inusa on his farm while he was trying to apply fertilizer on his plants after the rains of last night,” Abdullahi said.

He said the deceased was just recovering from an earlier gunshot wound inflicted on him when bandits attacked the village four months ago.

Shafiu’s father was murdered during that first attack, Abdullahi said.

He added: “It is exactly four months now that his (Shafiu) father was killed in a similar attack, because the wives of the old man are completing their four months stay at home as mandated by Islam.

“We gathered from his farm neighbour and brother that initially, one of the bandits appeared before them saying anyone who knew he was guilty should run and who was not should stay.

“Shafiu refused to run and when the others numbering over a hundred arrived, they opened fire and killed him instantly. Here are his remains that we brought for the governor to see and know that this peace initiative is not working for us.”

Sani said: “these criminals have always passed by our village without any threat or harassment until the last few months.

“So far, they have attacked us more than eight times and have killed many people.

“Even while on our way to Gusau today, we received a phone call that they also killed one Bala Danrabi, a vigilance group leader who had always fought the bandits,” he said.

Police Commissioner Usman Nagogo expressed shock over the attack, but told NAN that such incidents are expected during conflict resolution.

He said: “I can confidently assure you that the peace initiative by Gov. Bello Matawalle, which I lead in the state, is working as can be seen in the release of kidnap victims and the repentance of several bandits, but that does not mean that the hardened criminals are no longer there; they are the ones that will perpetrate this now,” he said.

“When you talk about RUGA, it is not anything that people should be worried about. In 2001, I established RUGA in Abia.

“In Lokpanta,( Umunneochi LGA Abia North) I built a place where the whole cattle is sold in Umuahia and Aba, in 2001, when I became governor.

“I built it and they called me; I said Umuahia and Aba, we need to de-congest.

“What they call Shoprite today, used to be cattle settlement if anybody knows that. The same thing with Aba. I had an honest meeting with them where I said I was going to provide electricity and water but this is where you are going to be.

“I procured five Coaster buses and said bring your RUGA. I will join with some of your executives, let us go and see this land. If it is agreeable by all of us, I will call the communities and talk to them.

“We had meetings and the communities said yes. They took off in Lokpanta. That is the biggest cow market in both South South and South East. It is the biggest cattle market today.

“This is the issue. The Federal Government should always do a wide consultation because if you just go back and put a deliberate policy, I want to do RUGA, people in my village in Igbere do not understand what RUGA is.

“They will fear and say that they want to kill all of us. Some of us are the largest sellers of cattle. I started selling cows as far back as when I was in the university (of Maidugiri Borno State.)”

“It is such a delight to be back within the four walls of this great institution after 21 years. I am indeed humbled by the recognition from my faculty, especially the Dean of Law, Professor Michael Okom and the Law Students Association. This recognition today would not have been possible were if these lecturers failed to form my character while here. I am particularly thrilled to be accompanied by my old friends, the UNICAL Faculty of Law Class of '98 who have joined me in solidarity.

This award belongs to the Class of '98, AKA The Golden Ones.

In 1992/93, like many of you here today, I came to the law faculty of our great institution with hopes of a better life and in pursuit of a bright future for myself and my family.

As a starry-eyed teenager anxious about my future, I was determined to apply myself to study our statutes, the common law and equity, the principles of law, the philosophies and the application of logic. I was determined to be successful; to be the best legal practitioner Nigeria had ever seen. So, like a lot of the students here, I bent my head most nights and pored through text, lecture notes and handouts. Like the Bible commanded, I studied to show myself approved. This was my recipe for success - or so I thought.

But you see, something was missing - the People Element.

Popular consensus in the definition of law acknowledge that law exists to serve the people. So I find it quite interesting how oftentimes we conveniently reduce the whole concept of law to a mere series of sections, sub sections, principles and procedures to be internalized and regurgitated in exams and practice; how easy it is for us to recognize the text of the law, but forget the faces of THE PEOPLE who the law serve.

William Godwin said, “Law is made for man and not man for the law.”

Which means, man does not serve the law, the law serves man. I therefore thought to myself; if the law exists to serve the People, then People must be very important. It means that People are at the centre of everything. This epiphany led me to concede that all of the work I was putting in was nearly meaningless until my knowledge, talents and abilities were utilized for the development of other people.

This understanding began to redefine what success meant to me. It sparked a passion for the people in me and that was when my life took off. At the age of 23, I became a student representative of this University. My passion for the people also led me to work for the United Nations High Commission for Refugees in Australia, where I led a team to assist in the Sudan/Dafor crisis.

And when I returned to Nigeria in 2003, my desire to serve set me up to become the youngest Local Government Chairman of the oldest and largest undivided Local government area in Nigeria at age 31, Senior Special Adviser on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, as well as the Senior Special Adviser to the Executive Governor of Abia State on Millennium Development Goals and International Relations at age 35.

Today, this passion for the people has led me into the hallowed chambers of the House of Representatives, where I now make laws and represent my Constituency, the culmination of the extension of goodwill from the Benjamin Kalu Foundation for 17 years.

Looking back at the journey so far; from my days as an audacious malabite studying law in this university, to establishing Silk Partners LLP, a thriving law firm in Lekki, Lagos, and further up to my current position as a lawmaker in the National Assembly, I realise that all of the things which may be considered my greatest achievements to date have been as a result of my passion for THE PEOPLE.

The young scholars of this esteemed faculty of law are part of the People dear to my heart. Therefore, I am happy to announce the commencement of the annual Hon. Benjamin Okezle Kalu Prize for the best performing students in Constitutional Law, Jurisprudence and Evidence. This prize will be given at the annual homecoming event of the faculty.

In addition, the Dean of the faculty, Prof. Michael Okom had requested for a solar energy generator to power the classrooms allocated to law students for the provision of light and a more conducive atmosphere during lectures and exams. I wish to state that on behalf of my class ‘98, I will provide this.

I have also decided to sponsor the establishment of the Benjamin Kalu Legislative Institute to partner with the Faculty of Law, University of Calabar for legislative related research work, which will engage both lecturers and students in the act of drafting well researched bills for the Federal Republic of Nigeria. This will be funded by my office in partnership with other international agencies.

As I look around this room today, I see the faces of ambitious and courageous young men and women eager to take on the world. I also know that not everyone here today will have a career as a lawyer. Some, like me, will find themselves drawn to the wodd of politics or business. Others will devote themselves to education, or philanthropy, or the arts. The possibilities are endless. But the education you are acquiring here today will help you excel in any field and at ANY profession.

As rightly expressed by Oliver Wendell Holmes “In what other profession does one plunge so deep into the stream of life, to shore in its passions, its bottles, its despair and its triumphs?”

That is the beauty of law and I encourage you to take it seriously.

You may not realize it yet, but by the time you graduate here you would have acquired the necessary skillset to change the world. The world is in need of more people like you. So, I encourage you to walk through life with a sense of wonder. Be sensitive to the pain of others, when you find yourself in a position to lead, serve with love.

Whatever path you decide to toe in life, let PEOPLE be at the centre of your endeavours for therein lies true success.

I am for the people, I believe in the people and so should you.
