If you value the vehicle as an asset in this current Nigeria , then u will cut on some expenses and to have it insured . But then again , u can decide to take on the risk by assuming u won’t be involved in any serious injury and by so doing decide not to insure.

I had the spreadsheet for calculating. I think I had been insuring the car for 90 to 100k. It was a massive massive jump and I jejely reverted to third party.

we have been debating about how far 400k a month can go on this platform - now add 40k /month to it. it may work if the vehicle is commercial and you can simply transfer the cost to clients via billing - but for private owners in this economy?

I don't even think it's about the affordability or not, it's more a question of the odds of utilizing said insurance in the course of a year.

Insurance is baked into the financial system of the developed world, if it wasn't they too go dey avoid insurance like their Naija counterprats.

You first paragraph is a thought the general optimistic thoughts of an average person . Of course everyone thinks and hope they don’t have to utilize their insurance. That u are making an insurance claim means an unfortunate event has happened and nobody wants or hope for that .

Comprehensive insurance has skyrocketed along with car prices. If you are in a big company whose provider subsidizes for personal cars maybe. Otherwise...

Comprehensive insurance is 5% of the value of ur vehicle. If u are driving a N10m car, u certainly can afford N500k to cover ur car for one full year. You may decide not to buy the policy, but u certainly can afford it.

That same car will require you to buy tyre, shock absorber, do regular/routine servicing ,etc which may cost more than that N500k in the long run.

I think people choose not to buy comprehensive insurance not because they can't afford it, but because they either don't value it or they just don't believe in it.

There is a general perception of blue collar criminals as st oo pd. Anyone who has visited VGC will tell you the entrance and exit gate is a choke point. So how did the guy think he would get away. It is not as if the express is clear like that either. A foolish idea with even worse execution. And as the owners of the cars are all well heeled hoa abroadian types - the guy will hear it. It will also be much harder for third parties coming to VGC going forward.

There's no sense to the guy's attempted theft; he clearly lacked exit strategy , maybe he was high on some substances.

As you rightly pointed out, he has just made it harder for non-residents to gain entrance into VGC. I'm sure they will put in serious measures to ensure entry and exit for non-residents will be very difficult.

Most Nigerian car owners can afford comprehensive insurance , but they don’t buy it anyways . Being able to afford it does not mean they actually value it to the extent of purchasing it .

This guy went to a car dealer in VGC in Lagos posing as customer . As soon as he was handed Toyota Tundra keys , he central locked car and sped off on high speed in an attempt to steal the vehicle .

He damaged the gate of the estate, hit a security guard and allegedly damaged several vehicles while he was being chased .

The weyrey was eventually caught after crashing the vehicle ; leaving behind several cars damaged while he was being pursued .

He damaged 39 cars in total before they caught him….
