There are students who are always sent out of exam hall because hadn't paid their schoolfees and sitting for first semester exams.

I had a friend in the university, it was his father's tenant benevolence that practically saw him out of school. By the time he entered university, his popsy was already old and was living off the rent he collects from the house he built in the 80's. The man was using the money to keep body and soul together and take care of his younger children. My guy was considered a full grown man and should be able to fend for himself.

My guy was close to one of his father's tenants who were working class couple. He plays with their kids, helps with their assignment and always makes himself available to them when they need help with errands. Na money wey those couple dey always tip him as ọmọ boy my guy used to pay his school fees. How that kind person Wan take fund flight ticket as at that time?

The professional aspect of teaching in Nigeria is quite poor, particularly after secondary school, I have to admit. I had similar experiences while I was growing and learning, particularly in secondary school. I really worry that we don't have actual professional teachers who have gone through the rigors of becoming educators from tertiary institutions teach our children, especially in primary and secondary settings. Like you rightly alluded to, most of the teachers at the basic level are usually university graduates who are not equipped to be actual educators because teaching transcends being in the classroom. How many of our primary and secondary schools actually employ graduates from our Federal and State colleges of Education? I mean over 80% of NYSC corpers are deployed to primary and secondary schools, even those with 3rd class and Pass (No disrespect to anyone).

We really need to get our basic education right and it starts with employing the right educators who have been trained specifically for the purpose of being career teachers in the field of academia. You'd notice I am focusing primarily on basic education versus post-secondary because if we get it right in this setting, post-secondary would be easier for students. Also, it is the same problem in post-secondary settings, where to your point, people get lecturing job without the requisite training needed to actually be a professional teacher. People use connections to get lecturer slots and are have absolutely no idea what it means to lecture. For avoidance of doubt, not all post-graduate students or degrees should teach. If your Ph.D. doesn't include courses in college teaching, including practicum hours then the student has no business becoming an instructor.

Well, I think some states are now trying to set things right.

I learnt Lagos state ministry has insisted on recruiting only graduates with Degrees in educational courses for both state owned primary and secondary schools. If you have a degree in a non education focused course, then you must have PGD education for you to be considered for employment. In their last two recruitment exercise, they insisted on this. I commend them for that.

I hear you, but it's still penny wise pound foolish. NYSC should be treated as a one-off life event which budget provision should be made for like a wedding or funeral. The speed of the ransom payment in less than one week shows money dey with proper planning. The kidnappers were calling N950m for 20 students initially, and in less than one week, the matter is done and dusted. Let's even say they reduced it to N5m per child, that payment was too quick. You will usually spend the first 3 days pricing with the kidnappers, then another couple weeks to raise the money but these guys done finish the whole matter in few days.

As example, when my cousin was traveling to Osun, she was going by bus. I quickly called her and her father and saw that it's just complacency setting in. This is around that Owo massacre time. Within few minutes, we have arranged contributions for her to travel by air, and the agreement is that she should stay there throughout NYSC until we book return flight than risk coming back and forth by road. As a child in her early 20s whose brain cannot comprehend entering plane or spending few hundred k on it, it's up to those with means within the family to guide, before ransom bill of millions drop. And it's up to her father to know the importance of accessing such funds for safety than to bring a bigger ransom bill later

You just made my point for me with this your example. You were able to advise the girl's father and back up advise with money because you are financially stable.

I have seen two different videos of the parents being interviewed and from their environment you can tell they are not financially stable enough to afford the air travel you are suggesting. As a Nigerian living in Nigeria, I can tell you for free that not many family members will bring money out of their pocket to contribute for your child to fly to NYSC. They will tell you even their own child enter bus go Kano from Ibadan, why your own daughter Wan enter plane go Imo? 😂

If I had a younger who wants to go for NYSC, I would also try as much as possible to ensure he doesn't travel by road if the state he's going to has a working airport.

If you ask me, this particular kidnapping looks like local kidnap done by criminals operating in that area. It doesn't look like the previous ones . The way they reduced the ransom drastically and quickly negotiated with families of the victims was totally different from the pattern of mass kidnaps that has happened this year and last year.

I have a feeling if the security agents put in serious efforts, they can nab these guys. I won't be surprised if they turn out not to be the regular Fulani herdsmen

Do you think any of them will come through for them? I mean these are poor people who have their own nuclear family responsibilities not yet met, why will they contribute to ur child going to camp via flight? The means is not there like you are thinking.

They only squeezed out money out now because everyone fears the kidnappers may actually harm them.

I saw this topic and felt compelled to bring it here to share my thoughts, read other thoughts as well.

While the OP and those who support his position make some good points, they are forgetting the OP is responsible for teaching only his child in comparison to the teacher who has to teach a lot of children. There is also a misconception that being a professional teacher is limited to just teaching and because I teach my own child better, I can do a better job than the teacher who is supposed to be the professional.

Parents have the advantage of knowing the tendencies, temperament and unique dynamics of their own children, consequently, your own child should learn better from you. Children may also behave better at home and be more compliant at learning than at school.

A teacher is trying to teach a classroom with children who have different personalities, tendencies and learning dynamics, so it is more challenging for the teacher to achieve perfect teaching techniques for every child in that classroom and this is where collaboration comes.

Parents should be sharing thoughts, what works at home rather than expecting teachers to be the only source of learning. Parents should also be active in the academics of their children, particularly when they are still in nursery, primary and secondary school.

All you've said is very true, but I won't rule out the fact that some teachers actually don't know how to teach.

In my secondary school we had different teachers at different times who took us some subjects and made most students dislike those subjects because of how terrible they were at teaching. I attended a government secondary school where all our teachers are civil servants, most of whom do the barest minimum to impart knowledge. I guess some of them were just university graduates who got teaching jobs out of necessity for self-preservation and not because they studied education-based courses nor have passion for teaching.

Some of the subjects they made me dislike from SS1 to SS2; by the time I attended an external tutorial for 6 months in SS2, I wrote GCE and cleared all my papers while doing B3,B2 in two of such subjects. The difference was the teachers and the their teaching methods in that external tutorial.

In the University too, I know a couple of lecturers who are actually very terrible educators. I believe those ones were just brilliant students who made good grades during their bachelor's degree, had PhD grade in their Masters and proceeded to obtain their PhD. They are people whom you will read their journal articles and commend their scholarly work, but when they teach in class they suck!

Most people don't know this gospel truth. The more you advance in age, you get wiser and you keep forming hard man wey no dey take bullshiiit. If God wan catch you, the person you are seeing too will also be within your age bracket. Ego and zero-tolerance for bullshiit will make it hard for both of you to settle down on time.

The category of people I've seen this thing affect most are people who relocated abroad as single in their late 20's, spent their early to mid 30's trying to sort their financial lives in a new country and start thinking of settling down maritally afterwards. Most times they always marry wrong whether they decide to marry someone based abroad or come down to Nigeria to get a spouse.

Government is saying the kidnapped NYSC members were rescued in joint military action.

The parents on the other hand have detailed information of how they pooled resources to contribute the ransom, changed it to dollars and paid to the kidnappers before their children were released.

That our government lies shamelessly is not news again. In my personal opinion, I think the honorable thing the government can do at this point is to at least reimburse the parents the amount each of them paid as ransom. Most of those poor parents will most likely be in debt as a result of the ransom payment

However, this is you assuming everyone on that commercial plane is science inclined or understand physics to the point of feeling safe. He may not achieve his attempt but his behavior caused significant chaos, disrupting the flight and compromising the safety of everyone on the flight.

The incident could have forced an emergency landing irrespective.

Even a professor of physics at that moment is not doing any mental permutations as to whether the man can open the door or not. The idea of a fellow passenger making attempt to open the exit door is enough to send a Nobel Laurete in physics into panic mode.

They are saying it's a Kenya airways enroute Lagos from Nairobi. According to this poster, the man died eventually on the flight.

If this account is true, I hope the guy doesn't have drugs in his system either as a user or trafficker. Serious investigations need to be carried out to actually clear the air on what really was wrong with him.

Omo, na why I no dey fit sleep whenever I fly, even if na long flight. From the moment I enter airport to when I finally board and flight don start, the way I dey use scan people pass wetin TSA dey do for here. I don't know how some people do it, they take medications to sleep throughout the flight because of anxiety.

Most business ventures in Nigeria are high risk ventures sha. The people element of business is always deciding factor whether a business will thrive or collapse especially in a country like Nigeria wey wicked people plenty.

But looking at our entertainment industry, I would say he has a ready-made market waiting for his business venture to tap into. If he doesn't run into problem with government and doesn't suffer major sabotage from those he employs there, I think this investment will really pay off for him in the future.

Very very brilliant. His investment makes so much sense because going forward, most of his fellow actors will have no choice but to patronize his business at one stage or the other in their film production business.

Even if they shoot an epic movie in some remote village, they will need to post production in a studio which he has available with state of the art equipment. If they take their movies to cinemas, he will get a bite because he owns a cinema that has two modern cinema rooms. If they want to record soundtrack for movies, he has a music studio to serve their purpose.

Airframes are not handled like road vehicles..... they do what is called periodic depot maintenance and most frames were usually cargoed to their host countries for certified maintenance.

We still recored air crashes and frame losses even then.
As at today most of the pdm is now done in house as capacity has grown tremendously.
In this aspect, the usual Nigerianess/factors are absent.
Rotor craft are just notorious, the physics is very difficult.

I am not an aeronautical engineer, neither am I technician knowledgeable in mechanics of commercial nor military aircrafts so I can't argue on anything you've written up here.

But one thing I know is, this is Nigeria and things don't seem the way they are actually are. My instinct is NCAA does a lot of good work to ensure only airworthy commercial aircrafts fly in our skies. I can't say the same for our military authorities because they don't have an indepedent agency determining if our military aircrafts are airworthy before they are allowed to fly.

Below is an alleged leaked chat between one of the personnel aboard the ill-fated military aircraft and a a friend. According to the chat, the plane had issues before the ill-fated flight. How do we know if the plane was indeed airworthy as of the time of the flight?

The crazy thing is even after an investigation is carried out into the incident, there might be some cover up in order not to indict some senior men who may be culpable of negligence.
