PoliticsPowerful Nigerians Were Behind Banditry – Alake by Bobloco(op): 7:51am On Jan 23, 2024
Minister of Solid Minerals, Dele Alake, has said the Federal Government is committed to ending illegal mining in the country’s mining sector.

Alake spoke when he led a Federal Government delegation to pay a condolence visit to the Oyo State Government over Tuesday’s explosion at Bodija estate in Ibadan.

The minister contended that powerful Nigerians were behind banditry associated with illegal mining in Nigeria.

He said a lot of banditry, terrorism and insecurity which were being associated with the mining sector were actually sponsored by illegal miners who are powerful people in the society.

“There are lots of connivance among the strata of the society —- both high, medium and low classes of the society —- in the nation’s mining sector.

“But the Federal Government is working together with the state and local governments, as well as the host communities, who have efficient knowledge of the local terrain to address the issue.

“Illegal mining is not exclusive to the high class alone, but cuts across the strata of our society. So, we are employing both kinetic and non-kinetic strategies and tactics to address the menace,” Alake said.

He disclosed that the Federal Government would await the final report of the forensic investigations into the causes, effects and possible remedy to the Bodija estate explosion.

Alake however said it was going to be after this that government would take critical decisions on the unfortunate incident.

“It would be presumptuous for the Federal Government to take any solid pronouncement or categorical announcement now.

“We will examine all the forensic analysis reports, and all the investigations from all the agencies and various intelligence arms of the security agencies.

“They are all working round the clock to provide an authentic and viable forensic report to the Federal Government.

“When the reports are ready, the Federal Government will be on a solid platform to make an informed judgment and a categorical statement.

“The final forensic report will also help the Federal Government in taking appropriate decisions concerning the victims of this ugly incident.

“Anything before then will be presumptuous and can be misleading at the end of the day,” he said.

The minister urged Nigerians to be conscious and always report suspicious movements and businesses in their environment, noting that failure to report early always lead to negative results.

“We need to be safety-conscious and develop the attitude of reporting atrocious activities in our neighbourhood.

“For example, no one will expect that such deadly explosives could be stored in an elite estate like this without suspicion,” he said. (NAN)

But he did made money his God when he became the most notorious narcotics drug trafficker the city of Chicago has ever known, forfeiting over $460,000 of drug proceeds to the US government.

After his tenure as governor, he began ferrying the entire common wealth of Lagosians in bullion vans, having siphoned it through a two-decade-old blueprint conduit pipe he built connecting the coffers of Lagos State Treasury with his personal company.

Today, Lagosians are screaming "Ebi pa wa ooo" whenever they see his convoy because he is with their common wealth.
PoliticsInsecurity: Nigerians On Edge, Asking What’s Going On — Bode George by Bobloco(op): 11:22pm On Jan 22, 2024
Former Deputy National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, Chief Bode George, on Monday, warned that the recent waves of kidnappings and insecurity were pushing Nigerians close to the precipice. He warned that Nigerians were asking what’s going on, and that any little push can lead to disintegration.

George, in a statement, tasked the President Bola Tinubu-led administration to tackle the escalating insecurity. He insisted that the country must be restructured.

Also, Bode George noted that the government of the day had failed Nigerians. He warned that insecurity will make it impossible to attract the much-needed international economic investment.

Questions
The PDP chieftain said: “In the wake of the alarming escalation of insecurity and the recent waves of kidnappings terrorising Nigerians, it has become imperative for us to address the critical questions Nigerians are asking.”

Bode George continued: “The pertinent question Nigerians are asking today is: What exactly is going on in our country?

“Nigerians are looking to the government to instill security amidst the fear and atrocious crimes being committed in Nigeria, which is destroying the security and stability of our nation, making Nigeria very volatile and a threat to the personal safety of Nigerians.

“The sudden increase and high prevalence rate of innocent lives lost, suffered by Nigerian communities is not only tragic but has made it almost impossible to attract the much needed international economic investment that can only prevail in a politically stable environment.

“Nigerians are perpetually engulfed with fear and so they are asking what is happening to the government in power.

“Why are they refusing to put the national security of this nation front and centre of their political agenda? The government of the day has failed Nigerians once again.

“With the recent killing of more than 200 people in Plateau State during the Christmas season, in addition to the rampant abduction of citizens every day, Nigerians are now forced to look for tens of millions of naira in cash to pay off ransoms.

“I am also asking the same critical question: Whither Nigeria?

“The fundamental duty of government, anywhere in the world, is the protection of lives and properties of its citizens.

“It also must put adequate well-coordinated security plans that prioritise national security and ensure an atmosphere; peaceful and conducive for its citizens.

“Pitiably, this is not the case in our country today. On the roads, on the farms, in the market, even in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the seat of government, it seems terrorists and kidnappers have now taken the battle to the city of power.

“What is the government doing to eliminate this plague of insecurity in the land? How do we develop the economy and catapult economic growth when Nigerians and foreigners/investors have become endangered species in the hands of killers?

“The lack of urgency to promptly tackle banditry, terrorism, kidnapping and insecurity in the land gives me grave concern, anxiety and distress.

“This hydra-headed problem is not being tackled by the government. It has now become a crime for Nigerians to move from one place to the other. How long will Nigerians endure this?

“Kidnapping for ransom is already creating fear all over the country. Leaders in the country must not just bombard Nigerians with the semantics of ‘We are on top of the situation’.

“Those in authority must show leadership qualities, and as a popular saying goes; The only thing necessary for evil to triumph in Nigeria is that good citizens watch silently and do nothing.

“Elders in the country must stand up and advise the government appropriately on actions that will ensue peace and stability in the land.

“Since the Supreme Court has ruled in favour of President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of the February 25, 2023 election, it is now time for real governance, and Nigerians are earnestly yearning for this.

Close to precipice
“Nigeria is close to the precipice and any little push can lead to a total disintegration. That is why the Bola Tinubu administration should put on its armour and tackle this menace in society now.

“From Sokoto to Oyo, Rivers to Niger, Imo to Taraba; high rate of unemployment, chronic hunger and malnutrition are so prevalent in the land.

“According to a popular saying, an idle hand is the devil’s workshop. Since people must eat, they will resort to anything that will put food on their tables, even if it is undesirable and despicable.”

On the need for the Federal Government to tackle the growing number of unemployed youths in the country, George said: “So, what is the government doing to engage this growing army of unemployed youths in the country?

“Naira is now about N1,300 to a dollar. A bag of rice is more than N60,000. The cost of living is just going up and the quality of life is going down.

It appears the government is helpless and unprepared. Government must stretch out its hands to foster partnerships with all relevant stakeholders and agencies, to ensure immediate relief for those most vulnerable in our society.

“I said it before and I am going to repeat it for posterity. We must restructure this country and the time is now. If we are really practicing democracy the way it should be, Abuja should not breathe down the necks of all the 36 states.

“We must restructure immediately.

“The Federal Government must also devolve power to states to achieve more effective governance and management of each state’s resources. Governors are closer to the people. They know what their people need.

“Apart from monetary policy, customs, defence, foreign affairs and a few others, governors should handle the rest critical matters on the Exclusive List in the Constitution.

“For example, people in Alimosho, the most populous local government in Nigeria, cannot go to Abuja for their basic needs. The governor is there in Alausa, Ikeja to handle such things.

“Development should be bottom-up, not the other way round. That is why if California, a state in the United States (U.S.), were a sovereign nation, it would rank in terms of nominal Gross Domestic Product (GDP) as the world’s fifth largest economy behind Japan and ahead of India.

“In fact, the state of California has a larger GDP than that of all African countries.

“Its Silicon Valley is home to some of the world’s most valuable technology companies, such as Apple, Alphabet and Nvidia,” Bode George noted

PoliticsNigerian Govt To Fund Student Loan Scheme Through Education Tax – FIRS Chairman by Bobloco(op): 5:49pm On Jan 22, 2024
The Nigerian Government has said the Student Loan Scheme would be funded through the Education Tax Fund, under the Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS.

FIRS Chairman, Zacch Adedeji revealed this on Monday while briefing State House Correspondents alongside the Executive Secretary of the Board, Dr Akintunde Sawyerr, at the Presidential Villa, in Abuja.

According to Adedeji, the deployment of the Education Tax Fund in the scheme is one of the ways the government can be accountable to taxpayers in the country.

In his remarks, Sawyerr also assured that the process for applying for the loan would be devoid of human intervention as every action would be undertaken on an App specifically designed for the purpose.

He explained that the government was keen to ensure that young Nigerians do not fail to acquire tertiary education just because of lack of funds to continue their studies.

According to him, the implementation of the student loan scheme would enable Nigerians to pick a career trajectory of their choice rather than being forced to do something else because they were unable to acquire requisite education due to lack of funds.

Sawyer also affirmed that the loan would help to stem the dangerous journeys undertaken by Nigerian youths across the Sahel to Europe in search of a better life.

He further disclosed that school fees for successful applicants would be transferred directly to their institutions, noting that while every Nigerian was eligible to apply for the loan, only the most needy would be supported.

Sawyerr said, “It’s a pleasure to be here today to brief you on the impending launch of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, which is the bedrock that will operationalize the student loan scheme in Nigeria. It’s a great opportunity to help solve an age-old problem that has been on in this dear nation of ours for quite some time.

“There are many, many people with great capacity and with the desire to improve their education. And usually the place where that falls down is when they get into the tertiary base. At that point they really have a number of options, either to go into the world of work with qualifications that are not necessarily optimal for them or to find ways of funding that tertiary space.

“When I say tertiary, some of it is academic. So university education is generally regarded as academic but this programme seeks to provide opportunities for Nigerian students who want to go into the academic side and get a university degree or perhaps want to go into the technical side and go and acquire some vocational skills and some vocational qualifications which is always needed in society, and also in the teacher training space. Because you know, without teachers, really none of us are going very far. We have to learn from others and we have to have teachers.

“So, this is a great opportunity for that applicant, and they are the ones that are at the center of all of this. This act, effectively the intention behind it is to ensure that the reason for not being able to go on and further your education at a tertiary level, is not for the lack of finance.

“This law seeks to bridge the gap between the desire to study and the capacity to go further. It seeks to bridge that gap that is created by lack of finance, lack of funding.”

He added, “I want to say to you that this has been done with a lot of thought. So in application and in applying for this loan, there is zero human intervention. In other words, there is an app. The applicant will go on to a portal, they will engage with that app.

“They will have to put in certain pieces of information which made them eligible, that is their JAMB number, and of course the tie-in to their date of birth. Further pieces of information include things like their national identity number, NIN, which confirms that they are Nigerians.

“This loan scheme is being paid for by Nigerian tax payers. So it’s for Nigerians and the NIN helps verify and qualify them as such.

“Their BVN is needed for financial inclusion because this scheme will at some point be able to empower students. So we need to know they have bank accounts. We need to know where their accounts are, to be able to access those accounts.

“It will also have their matric number, admission number so that we can firmly establishment which institution they are going because one of the key elements of this is that once we’ve received applications and those applications are approved, the fees or the tuition requirements in terms of financials will be transferred directly to the institution.

“That in itself has benefits for the institution. Many many students are struggling to pay their fees, their parents are struggling to pay their fees. There’s a very high dropout rate. So it’s one thing to get into the tertiary institution. It’s another thing to stay there for four years or for three years. This scheme seeks to help people access and remain until they qualify or graduate.”

Explaining further, Adedeji said, “This is in fulfillment of Mr President’s promise that we will make education accessible to all. And while I have to put my own is because of the source of funding. This is one of the schemes that we will apply Education Tax that we will collect. So, this is a way of being accountable to the taxpayer because the essence of Education Tax is to consolidate and restore education integrity and quality.

“And in fulfilling that part of the Act, so, that is why Education Tax Fund is one of the sources of funding, by God’s grace, that we’ll use actually to execute this laudable programme.”
