…says INEC Chairman should emulate IGP The People’s Democratic Party, (PDP), had again urged the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, to immediately redeploy the Imo State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Prof. Sylvia Agu, for allegedly being compromised to manipulate the November 11, 2023 governorship elections in Imo States in favour of the All Progressives Congress, (APC) The party urged the INEC Chairman to take a cue from the Inspector General of Police who redeployed the Commissioners of Police in Bayelsa, Imo and Kogi States in response to the outcry and demands of the people for neutrality in the November 11, 2023 governorship election in these States. This was contained in a statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, in Abuja, on Monday. He said, “Prof. Yakubu should forestall an impending crisis in the Imo State election by heeding the insistent outcry, petitions and protests by the people of Imo State, Political Parties, Civil Society Organizations as well as Ohaneze Youth Council; for the removal of the Prof. Sylvia Agu who has been allegedly compromised by the APC. “The people of Imo State cannot accept any electoral process with Prof. Agu, as REC, given her reported role in the brazen manipulation of the 2023 National and House of Assembly elections in Imo State in favour of the APC, which is still in the public domain. “The redeployment of Sylvia Agu out of Imo State is therefore the only way to restore confidence in the electoral process, guarantee a credible election and avert crisis in the State. “This is especially so as there are very disturbing allegations in the public space of clandestine meetings between Prof. Agu and certain APC agents said to have been facilitated by her close relative, who is an APC national officer, ahead of the November 11, 2023 governorship election in Imo State.” Ologunagba further said, “The PDP calls on the INEC Chairman to note that the integrity of an election principally lies in the confidence of the electorate in the electoral process. “Prof. Sylvia Agu has lost the rectitude as Resident Electoral Commissioner and should not be part of the conduct of the November 11, 2023 governorship election. Her continuing stay in office as Imo REC is vexatious and a recipe for crisis. “The PDP therefore restates its demand on the INEC Chairman to immediately redeploy Prof. Sylvia Agu out of Imo State to restore the confidence of the people and the integrity of the electoral process.” https://www.vanguardngr.com/2023/11/again-pdp-demands-removal-of-imo-rec/amp/ |

—Accuses gov of plotting to assassinate NLC President —Says terror taking precedence in Imo over reasoning —Urges IGP to remove CP THE Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has called on President Bola Tinubu to break his silence and call the Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma to order over the unleash of terror in the state. The NLC alleged that barely after three days Uzodimma sent thugs and the police to brutalize the Congress President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, the governor on Saturday, November 4, invaded and attacked his (Ajaero) hometown, Azalla Owalla in Emekuku in Owerri, the state capital, to continue his ‘mission”. NLC in a statement issued by Comrade Benson Upah, Head of Media and Information, alleged that the mission was to assassinate Comrade Ajaero under the misguided belief that he was still present, recovering from injuries inflicted on him by the police and hired thugs in November I. The statement was titled: “Hope Uzodimma continues on his murderous mission against Nigerian workers and trade union leaders: Invades and attacks NLC President’s community in Imo State.” It read: “The brazen and violent assault on the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero, and others on November 1st, 2023, inside the State Secretariat of the Nigeria Labour Congress in Imo State, by Governor Hope Uzodimma, his thugs, and the State Police Commissioner, stands as a stark reminder of the lengths to which they are willing to go in their pursuit of suppression and brutality. “In a shocking turn of events, on the morning of November 4th, 2023, Governor Hope Uzodimma, once again demonstrated his utter disregard for human rights and democratic principles by invading and attacking the community of Azalla Owalla in Emekuku, Owerri, Imo State -the hometown of NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero. “It is evident that the Governor’s sinister objective is the assassination of the President of the Congress, a motive laid bare by this latest act of aggression on the community. “This invasion was carried out under the misguided belief that Comrade Ajaero was still present, recovering from injuries inflicted by the police and hired thugs. “The use of excessive force against citizens who hold differing opinions or dare to question the Governor’s governance style, particularly about the inhumane treatment of workers in Imo State, is an affront to democracy. “The current situation in Imo State is nothing short of a descent into fascism, where terror takes precedence over reason, and dialogue is pushed to the sidelines.” The NLC fingered the Commissioner of Police in Imo State for being the willing tool to unleash terror in the state and called on the Inspector-General of Police to remove him without delay. “We urgently call on the Inspector General of Police to rein in the Imo State Police Commissioner, preventing further abuse and desecration of the nation’s Police force. The Commissioner has become a tool of oppression in the hands of the fascist Governor, perpetrating intimidation and harassment on the people of Imo State. Immediate removal is essential to prevent an impending crisis. “The President of the Federal Republic and all patriotic citizens of Nigeria must not remain silent in the face of this bloodshed. The Governor must be held accountable. We believe that the President holds the means to rein in the excesses of the Governor, and these measures must be swiftly employed to safeguard lives and properties in the state. “The people of Azalla Owalla are entitled to their peace, and the continued occupation of their community by the Police and Uzodimma’s thugs, in the wake of the assault on their fellow citizen, constitutes an ongoing insult. “The occupying forces must immediately vacate the territory, granting the people the freedom to engage in their socioeconomic activities without the looming spectre of terror.” Labour vowed that it would never succumb to the blackmail and intimidation of the anti-democratic forces in Imo State. According to the statement, “Governor Hope Uzodimma should be under no illusion -Nigerian workers remain steadfast in their commitment to protect the rights of Imo State workers, undeterred by the current wave of violence he has chosen to pursue. “We draw strength from the events of November 1st, which will guide our future interactions with the Governor. The workers of Imo State will prevail, and Hope’s attempts to thwart our cause through intimidation and violence will be in vain.” It would be recalled that the Imo State Government denied involvement in the arrest and brutalization of the President of Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Joe Ajaero. Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Hon Declan Emelumba stated this in a statement. He noted that those accusing the government were perennial mischief makers always crying wolf where there is none. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2023/11/attack-on-ajaeros-community-call-uzodimma-to-order-nlc-tells-tinubu/amp/ |
…Hosts Khalifa Sanusi The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Olayemi Cardoso, has reiterated that under his leadership, the Bank would focus mainly on the core mandate of price stability. The bank dislosed yesterday that Mr. Cardoso restated the direction of his leadership, while playing host to the Impact Investing Community, led by the 14th Emir of Kano and Khalifa of the Tijaniyyah Sufi order of Nigeria and the neighbouring countries, Muhammadu Sanusi II, himself aa former Governor of the CBN. Addressing the team in his office, Mr. Cardoso said that his administration was determined to change the narrative about CBN and its impact felt by Nigerians by curtailing inflation. He said, “At the end of our tenure, we want to look back and see that our policies have positively impacted people’s lives.” Speaking further, Mr. Cardoso thanked the Impact Investing Community for visiting the CBN, noting that the community represented an excellent future for Nigeria, with the potential to transform the country’s economy by tapping into the investment opportunities available across the country. While commending the quality of leadership at Impact Investing Community and its effort to create awareness, as well as, build partnerships, the CBN boss assured that the Bank would collaborate with them in the direction of putting in place frameworks that would encourage investments that would contribute to economic growth. In his remarks, Khalifa Sanusi noted that the Bank’s activities had a massive impact on the lives of Nigerians, adding that many people often “do not know the impact of a Central Bank’s works until a Central Bank fails.” While expressing concerns about the inflation rate, he urged the new leadership at the CBN to work persistently at driving down the rate, which he noted had severely impacted the wealth of individuals. He also acknowledged the importance of long-term planning by the CBN in achieving its goals, just as he emphasised the need for the fiscal authorities to focus on agriculture and education, especially for the girl-child. Khalifa Sanusi pledged his continued support, along with the Impact Investing Community, to the CBN in achieving its goals. Also speaking, the Chair of Impact Investing, Mrs. Ibukun Awosika, said they were at the CBN to register their willingness to support what the bank and the federal government were doing in terms of changing Nigeria’s investment climate by redirecting resources to areas where they would make the most positive impact. According to her, over $200 Trillion was available around the globe as investment funds, with $1 Trillion of it with Impact Investing. She further stated that Impact Investing, with a presence in over 41 countries, was willing to blend with traditional investment practitioners to make an impact in the country. While stressing the importance of social investment, she sought the support of the CBN to enable the body to achieve its goal. Equally speaking at the meeting, the Deputy Governor in charge of Corporate Services, Dr. Bala Bello, underscored the importance of investment, noting that global capital was moving towards social investment. He thanked the team for its support, noting that collaboration and effective communication were vital to successfully navigate the current challenges in the country. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2023/11/i-ll-concentrate-on-price-stability-cardoso-insists/amp/ |
