In recent times, a lot of children and teenagers have sophisticated communication devices like smartphones and iPads which costs about $200 – $1000 dollars. Such devices were procured by their parents so that these ‘kids’ can communicate with their friends but these parents are not mindful of the fact these children can connect to their peers and even older people with such devices. Sophie (real names withheld) was so troublesome in class. She was quite smart and always had a good grasp of every concept her teacher would teach but she had this terrible attitude of getting other children in trouble. She will always gossip and talk to other people about any victim she identifies, say all manner of lies and slander her victim. She kept on getting into trouble at school with severe consequences of detentions and suspensions. On a particular day, I overheard another parent complaining to her daughter’s teacher that she doesn’t want her child to be in the same class with Sophie anymore because her daughter had become a victim of cyber-bullying all of a sudden. I heard the word ‘cyber-bullying’ a couple of months ago from this parent and I was dumbfounded at my level of ignorance. I was totally blown off with this word. The children of this generation know so much beyond most adults. What is Cyber-bullying? Cyberbullying is the use of technology to threaten, harass, embarrass, intimidate or target another individual. This is basically common among young people. When an adult gets involved in it, it may be called cyber-harassment or cyberstalking, a crime that attracts legal consequences and may involve jail time. How can a child face cyber-bullying? If your child shows you a tweet, text message that is harsh, mean, or cruel. That is cyberbullying. Other acts may not be too easy to identify. These include: impersonating a victim online or posting personal information, photos, or videos designed to hurt or embarrass another person. How can children be protected from cyber-bullying? Parents and guardians need to monitor what their children get involved with. They need to build a sufficient level of trust between them and their children. They should discourage their children from using social media platforms that are not appropriate for their age until they are mature enough to be independent and responsible. When their children eventually register on social media platforms, they need to find a way to monitor the children’s media accounts to make sure they get involved in decent activities. They also need to know the social media apps on their children’s phone or iPads and if possible, instal tracking apps on such electronic devices to monitor their activities. One of such apps is Teensafe. In America, TeenSafe has kept teens out of dangerous situations. It is been used by over a million parents to monitor calls, text messages and discussions on social media and lots more. Parents need to be technologically savvy to be able to understand the activities of their children on social media in the midst of their daily activities and guide them so that they do not get cyber-bullied by their peers. I read this touching story on my whatsapp and I felt I should share it. Here is the story of a girl who shared her story online about how her uncle sexually abused her at the age of 14. Read her story: I was 14 years old when my uncle deflowered me, right in my father’s house, under my parents’ nose. But because they (my parents) trusted him and it would be my word against his, I could not tell anyone; and, of course, he warned me that if I told anyone, he would deny it and deal with me. I am a final year student in one of the federal universities. This incident happened when I was in Senior Secondary School (High School) year 2. I wasn’t really mature for my age; I was on the small side, but I had developed a woman’s body. My paternal uncle, my grandmother’s last born, then a youth corps member was posted to serve his fatherland where we were staying then, of course, it was natural for him to stay with us. He was a good uncle and very friendly with us. I am the last of my parents’ three children. My elder ones (both boys) were away in school leaving our housemaid and me in the house. Initially, my incle was nice and he was just a normal uncle everyone would wish for. After about a month or so, he came to stay with us, he started behaving funny towards me. He would touch my bum, and sometimes he would pretend it was a mistake, then, he would touch my breasts. Then, I really didn’t know how to place his behavior. In my mind, I would wonder if it was a mistake or he was doing it deliberately. Because I couldn’t really say I was scared to discuss it with anybody, not even with our housemaid, then, because we were a little close, I made up my mind to avoid him. I guess I over did it because everybody noticed this. My parents mistook my attitude for pranks and they would scold whenever he reported me. On a day, I told my mother that I didn’t like how my uncle used to touch me. I didn’t know what really got into her, but she scolded me not to say such a thing again. She reminded me that the person I spoke about was my dad’s younger brother. I had no choice, my situation then was between the devil and the deep blue sea. My parents had to travel to daddy’s hometown for a burial. We were all supposed to go together, but my parents decided that our housemaid and should stay back home. I pleaded with them to take me, but I was not lucky. In fact, dad would have conceded but my mom refused. It happened the next day. I was sleeping in my room, in the evening which I shared with our housemaid, but it was later that I learned that my uncle had sent her on an errand that kept her away and gave him enough time to perpetrate his evil deed. I felt a hand on my body. I opened my eyes and saw my uncle trying to force my jeans trousers off. I tried to scream, but he had covered my mouth with his palm. In short, my uncle raped me and deflowered me at 14. He asked me to clean up when he was done with me. He took my underwear and burnt it in my presence. He threatened to kill me if I ever told anyone. He tried to rape me again several times after that first experience, but I always carried my elder brother’s boy’s scout pen knife about and I vowed that I would kill him if ever got near me again. I wasn’t too sure if it was my threat or the fact that he was having sex with our 16-year old house maid that kept him away from me, because he had to leave our house when mummy discovered that our housemaid was pregnant, and she said my uncle was responsible for her pregnancy. It was then that my mother raised her voice that I had reported him to her before. She stupidly thanked God that my uncle did not touch me. How wrong? I did not correct her because it was rather too late. How I wished she had listened to me then! I would have been saved from these private pains. How I wish, mothers, especially, should learn to listen to their children and not shut them down anytime they try and speak with me. Follow us/Comment on www.naijahotwire.com |
Siena:Oga Sienna, where have you been? |
I had a conversation with a teenager today and she talked about about how she spent some of her holidays in Dubai. According to her, she said that during most of their return trips back home, her dad will book four seats, all on first class ticket as they come back to Nigeria. During one of such trips, her dad needed to come back to Nigeria urgently and he was not able to secure first class tickets as usual. Her dad, to her disappointment, bought one first class ticket for himself, one business class ticket for the mom and 2 economy class tickets for her and her sister. I further inquired from her why she does not like economy class tickets and surprisingly, she said that most people on economy class snore so badly when they are asleep. I have been troubled many times over about the excessive exposure of children to uncontrolled affluence and wealth in recent times. While it is worthy to note that poverty is not acceptable and neither is it a means to Godliness. On the other hand, excessive exposure of children and young adults to affluence is annoying, disturbing and unnecessary. In some countries like Japan, India and China where the culture of hardwork is cherished, children and teenagers are made to undergo very rigorous work at school. They are also made to acquire skills in ICT, robotics and other fields of human endeavour. It is quite amazing to watch these children and young adults engage themselves in displaying amazing skills they have learnt. In our country, we need to remind our young ones that hardwork pays. They need to learn consistently that they do not have to depend on the wealth of their parents to succeed. While it is acceptable for their parents to give them quality education and also expose them to a meaningful standard of living, they must also be careful not to allow their children gain access to uncontrolled wealth and exposure beyond their maturity level as this will make these young ones lose basic values of self-control, respect, hardwork and fairness. It is acceptable for children to enjoy the best of times with their parents and other family members but parents and guardians need to be careful about the legacy they live for their children. When a child realises that he/she does not have to study or work hard to be successful, it ultimately has a terrible impact on the society. Visit www.naijahotwire.com |

Rejection is a terrible feeling that traumatizes a victim and makes him/her reflect on the past with so much sadness and pain. Some situations that trigger feelings of rejection include: - queries at your workplace - loss of a job - inability to get a job - break up in relationship - infidelity - non-acceptance of marriage proposal It is always not too easy to cope with some of these situations as it sometimes leaves the victim devastated, in pain and emotional torment. Rejection often affects a victim’s psychological state as the person tends to complain about such disappointments too often to whoever cares to listen. Feelings of rejection can also trigger a violent behaviour from the victim. Such a victim becomes irrational and confrontation. Occasionally, such people tend to behave as if they have lost a grip on life and see themselves in much despair. Lets us examine some critical signs of rejection - the victim may be unable to sleep, think properly, concentrate, remember things - he/she may be unable to talk calmly - victim may be nervous - desire to run away or commit suicide - loss of appetite - anxiety about anything or everything A lot of people go through diverse and disappointing experiences. We tend to brood over terrible moments of rejection and pain without actually sitting down to think of ways to get it off our minds. A lot of people resort to addiction and demeaning lifestyles to get some sorts of experience off their memory. We need to spend more time with activities and people that make us happy. Having a bad day is one terrible thing I hate to experience and so do most of my friends. However, one must be prepared with the right attitude to face everyday. We must make sure we resolve issues from past relationships and experiences and seek a more enduring peace from within as this only makes us happier and at peace with other people. This incident happened about 6.45pm local time today. I went out this evening to do a few things and when I was through, it was already night time, I entered my car and started driving out of that estate somewhere in Abuja. Just before I got to the gate of the estate, I met a nice looking young woman with a boy of about three years old. This lady was neatly dressed from my fair assessment. She approached me through the driver's door and narrated her ordeal which I knew was somehow untrue. She said she just came in from Lagos and she was lodged in a hotel in Kubwa, Abuja. That she came in to see a man but the man was not at home. That she needed some money to go back to Lagos. At that moment, I knew she was lying. She did not even mention going back to Kubwa since it was already late. Kubwa was about 30 minutes drive from our location and this would have cost her about N500 maximum. I asked her how much it will take her to get to Lagos and she said N6000. She obviously wanted some fast money and I wasn't interested in giving it to her. I told her I didn't have any money on me, which wasn't true at all. She insisted she will manage any amount of money I give her. I was like, "Why will you manage my money after all, you were the one that needed help?". She persisted and I just told her point blank that I was sorry I couldn't help that God will make a way for her and I drove off. This experience depicts the kind of professional or deceptive begging which goes on particularly with some people who think others are so gullible to believe any tom-dick and harry story they are told. On a good day, I would have given her at least a N500 note but she just couldn't catch me with her trick. Be sensitive when a stranger asks you for money or help at lonely places. If the story doesn't click, then don't pay attention to the person. Visit www.naijahotwire.com |

Life as a single mother can be very challenging. We all know that when there is a separation or divorce between spouses, mothers are often saddled with the responsibility of taking care of the children. Single mothers are ladies who find themselves responsible for running the day to day activities of a child without any financial or emotional support from a male partner or husband. They may have separated from a physically abusive spouse while others may have been in a relationship with a guy who promised to get married to them only to be jilted after getting pregnant for selfish reasons. Life could be extremely challenging for single mothers especially when they have no job or they have a job that is barely enough to meet their personal needs. Let us attempt to examine the challenges of single mothers in this category. Loneliness Life could be miserable for a single mother especially if she lives alone with her kids. She absorbs all the pressures of life and does not have any adult at home to relate with. Most single mothers always have to look for a member of her family to live with her and take care of the children. For those who have people living with them, they are still traumatized by the experiences they had with their spouse or partner. They feel rejected and abandoned and try as much as possible to get it off their mind. Some go to the extent of consciously taking life threatening drugs. Raising Children Most single moms in this category have to device all means to play the role of a father to their children as well. They nurse their children during infancy, see the child crawl, walk, run and talk. They enrol their children in school and do daily school runs. They organise birthday parties for their children without their spouses or partner supporting or attending. Pay the bills Single mothers who have no meaningful source of income often think of abandoning their children. They always consider getting foster homes where their kids could be raised while they complete their education or look for jobs to take care of themselves. Rejection by the family In most African communities, single mothers are faced with the rejection and isolation from their family. Ladies who get pregnant while they are still living with their parents often deal with all sorts of provocation and insult from parents and other family members. Mothers who were abandoned by their spouses are seen as women who were not submissive to their husbands without making inquiries about the circumstances these women have had to deal with. Nursing a sick child can be quite tormenting for a single mother. She needs to consistently wake up at night to check her child and administer drugs. In extreme cases where a child is admitted in a hospital, they need to take permission from work to nurse the child until he/she recovers. The society needs to appreciate single mothers more because of the challenges they have faced . They should be encouraged and supported in our neighbourhoods, at work and in social circles. They must not be seen as objects of ridicule or gossip. This will help them to be emotionally stable, live normal lives and take care of their children. Bros, are you not the one i did a car scan for in Gwarinpa? I think its an engine oil issue. That your engine oil is too light for your car. When you rectify it, switch to 5w30. |
Run away from Altima by all means. Do not go near it. I am speaking from a bitter experience. Why dont you buy a 96 camry cos i prefer it to a Vento. But if you have a good mechanic, no problem. Vento really looks very UGLY to me. |
A lot of people who have a long distance relationship will often tell you that they seem to occasionally get absent minded. Most people who have been in long distance courtships or relationships will tell you that it is nerve cracking because he/she is in love with someone who is not physically around most of the time. There are different reasons why partners will be engaged and separated. This could be due to both partners schooling, job hunting or working at different locations. It is not advisable for people in a relationship to live in different cities as their relationship could be disappointing at the end for various reasons: It is so much easier to know if you are compatible with the guy or lady you want to get married to if you live within the same city. During your dates, visits or outings, you get to know the person’s disposition toward certain personal or social issues. You will also know the person’s weaknesses and strengths. You can know a guy who has some form of body odor or a lady who is naturally unkempt from a few interactions. There are certain things you may never notice if both of you talk on the phone all the time. You can actually know if your fiance or fiancee is polite or rude from the remarks he/she makes at other people. Some people are easily irritated at the slightest provocation while for others, it is not so. You will easily know if your date is bossy or gentle, nagging or understanding. You will also notice if your fiance/fiancee respects you or tolerates you if you live within the same city. During some unscheduled visits, you get to know if your close association upsets him/her. Some people seem to get so irritated when a fiance/fiancee hangs around them all the time. It is also possible to know by your frequent association or visits if your fiance/fiancee really wants to get married to you or he/she just wants to use you and dump you. Some people are just self-made leaches especially when they need something desperately from you. You can also know from your association if both of you enjoy each others conversation. Some people get to talk about who they are, what they like or what they want to achieve without considering the other person all the time. If you must be in a long distance relationship, you need to make out time with your partner to interact and get to know each other better. www.naijahotwire.com |
