hptouch2: This is an interesting post. One of the best thing that could ever happen to you in this part of the world (North America) is having an education. Already had a BSc in Nigeria. Find my way to Canada, did a Masters, and then got a scholarship for a PhD. After then worked with one of the top research group in the world in a university in Canada, then offered a job in US by one of the top five company who also filed my green card for me. Actually I was offered a green card through the outstanding researcher EB1 program. Fast-forward, I walked away from my job for career reasons, as the company wanted to change my career path totally (money is not everything). In truth, that was more reason for me to follow my dream and do what I'd always dreamt of. Though though. Just yesterday my bank just gave me 6-months grace period not to pay my home mortgage because I am going through a tough time. The question is would I have got all these if had stayed in Nigeria? Ironically, Nigeria is still part of the dream I am trying to actualize.

Nobody says its going to be easy .... I remember two of my former white colleagues ganged up with me informing my supervisor that they have issue with my accent. Meanwhile I was the best candidate for the job interview where I gave 45-min presentation; reason for the gang-up was simply because I do not do office-politics which is common in corporate America. In a nutshell there are thorns every where. But be careful what you read. I have been out of work for over a year (not that I am really looking for one now) but I still drive my 2012 Mercedes Benz GL450 and still have a roof over my head.

My people. Its a crazy and confusing world, but chose your path and stick with it.
Work politics is everywhere sir. In Nigeria, your job is not protected by the law if push comes to shove. Anyways, enjoy your mercedes Benz. So what are your long term goals? Do you have kids? I would not want to find myself in your situation. I work in a Fortune 500 company and I don't involve myself in work politics. Sometimes I think Nigerians tend to over do things at their work place.I am not saying your situation is same

ose_o: Going through all 17 pages of this thread has been quite interesting. the banter has been great, however i must say that there is some truth on both sides (nigeria vs america). I lived in the states for quite a few years and relocated back to Nigeria in 2010, people thought I was crazy for it because i just packed up my whole life and moved without a guarantee of a job or anything.

For those looking to move to the states going the F1(student visa) route, the best advice i can give you is this - "do your research" don't apply to just one school, apply to several, do not apply to a 2 year college, junior or community college because you will NOT get a visa. The embassy only issues F1 visas to students planning to attend 4-year colleges (there are a few exceptions however i doubt that you will be one). choose your school for good reasons, the strength of their academic programs, the communities they are in, the research opportunities and things like that. if you are going to study medicine apply to schools that are known for medicine, yes you may not get in or may chose another school bbut still apply because when you have your interview they WILL ask you is you applied to the best schools in whatever field you choose to study in and it looks better if you did apply even if you did not get in. also apply for scholarships, most colleges have scholarships you can apply for. if you are on financial aid the strength of your bank statement is not as important. When you go for your interview if you know your onions about why you chose the school and the course you are very likely to get your visa.
Great point but most Nigerians and other Africans move back home cos they fell out of status. So, what are you doing now in Nigeria? Most people that moved back to Nigeria also have the wrong perception before moving. They thought they will land a great job in Mobil , Shell and others.

Afam4eva: Thanks for your advice but no thanks. Technology is the future and redundancy in other spheres has necessitated the need for more technologically savvy people, so i encourage more people to go into that field.
That dude is not educated, you can tell from his poor usage of English language. Texas is an oil rich state yet California, a tech hub is the 5th largest economy in the world.

hardbody: Thanks bro. Blessed will be the day when we see others as selfless and deceit less as we presume in our imaginations. There are still people here who work hard to make a living, our infrastructure may not be as good as what is obtainable in the west but we believe that there is a silver.lining out there. It may take time, but it will surely come to pass. UK colonized America, I hope I am right and America is upwards of 200 years of independence. Nigeria got independence in 1960, our rulers may not be doing well but the environment and will power will change things for the better. You may choose what to believe.
Compare Nigeria to those other countries that obtained their independence same year as Nigeria. Nigerians mentality will only uplift Nigeria. When your leaders stop seeking health care in America amd the UK things will change for good. I am not talking about importing a resource you guys have abundantly.

Those Nigerians here condemning America have low self esteem. They have the blackman syndrome (crab in a basket). I have met senior software engineers in Cisco, Apple, ,Microsoft and exxon Mobil that had their college degrees in Nigeria before proceeding for Masters degree in the United States. If you are intelligent and hard working, the opportunity is abundant out here. My retirement plan package is set for life. A friend came here three years ago for masters in an engineering field, he was offered 150k as his salary and a sign in bonus of 10k. I am not talking about the stock options given to him by Microsoft. Ask him if he would like to relocate to Nigeria?Dude looked like Somalian refugee when he first came to states, as we speak he doesn't fit in his old clothes. Education is the only way out and don't listen to failures like Ozo-emeka

Billyonaire: Travel ke, for what reason ? Leave the home of my faith, where am treated like a king and go where ?
Most naija big boys own houses in the United States and United Kingdom, I doubt you have been to Ghana. I have played Polo with those guys at Ikoyi Polo club and they don't have your primitive mentality. If given the opportunity the one's that travel around the world with green passport, will Jump on a Blue or Red Passport in a speed of light. Do you know how inconvenience it is going to a country's embassy to obtain a visa to that country? I don't know where most european embassies are in Lagos or Abuja, all I care about is getting a flight ticket to that country before the price increases. Your Immigration officer treats Nigerians with green passport like animals but respect American citizens and sometimes give them preferential treatment at the point of entry. I love the luxury of owning an American Passport and also the covenience grin

I only remember possessing a Nigerian Passport, when I am headed to Nigeria and only pull out my Nigerian Passport on arrival at Nigeria's International Airport. Blue Passport has no competition. The life of a homeless American is worth more to her government than that of a Nigerian Billionaire to a Nigerian government. Imagine, US navy seals going all out to rescue a commercial Ship Captain in Somalia's deep seas. That mission alone cost the United States government over 2million dollars. My Blue Passport and that of my kids and grand kids will stay intact. If you don't know, Nigerians are hated all over the world.

We bought Hadoop from an unknown poor British dude, made him an overnight celebrity after rewarding him millions for his ingenuity. As we speak, Hadoop is worth Billions after American entrepreneurs polished it. Can the stingy British queen pay her citizen the said amount for his/her hardwork? America will remain the greatest country on earth, lead while others follow as we continue to reward people for their ingenuity, regardless of sex, age and color. Will Nigerian government encourage those students that built a rocket for their ingenuity? Your answers is as good as mine grin grin grin

Only in America young men turn over night millionaires. A country that gives everyone the opportunity to shine. Indians selling their start ups from left to righf. We turned British unemployed to celebrities and make them relevant in their boring country. We practice capitalism and we don't wait for the queen's crumbs. God Bless America grin grin grin

Jobs/VacanciesRe: Are Engineers The Most Unemployed Graduates In This Country by bootlegaz: 5:52pm On Oct 12, 2013
America needs Engineers and they are been paid very well. My advise is to obtain admission in a university that accepts Nigeria's university certification and upon graduation companies will hustle you if your GPA is sound. Attend a one year masters program, only few universities does that.

I used to think Buhari was a saint until I did some research on him. If he is an angel as yorubas thinks he is, why didnt he ask abacha to pardon Diya or conduct an election? Only gullibles amongst your lot will see him as a man without dirty baggage. Nigeria needs young brains and not washed up clowns.

shymexx: Just take a deep breathe and look at the comment pattern on this thread, yet we wonder why someone said the average IQ of Nigerians is around 70 - borderline retardation. Here is a man who's doing serious politicking and what Henry Kissinger would call, "realpolitik." However, rather than discuss what the meeting is about - you've duffers talking about the tosh they have been indoctrinated with, to malign the man.

At the end of the day, anything is definitely better than the utterly inept and corrupt GEJ...and anyone who would rid Nigeria's finances off the hands of Ngozi Iweala, an economic hit-woman, who committed biggest the ponzi scheme against a sovereign country and robbed Nigeria $6 billion - should be supported. I don't know this man but he definitely can't be worse than GEJ and his fedora hat - never!

If you think whoever rules Nigeria isn't ordained by the powers-that-be, then, you must be having a laugh.
Nigga, go back to your mama hair saloon or better still keep quiet if you know nothing about Nigerian politics. British government is the architect of Nigeria's problem. Fhuck the ugly and stingy Brits and their terrorist slaves in Northern Nigeria.

geeez: Lagos is the Japan of Africa

Any other acclaimed Japan is Taiwanese

Eko o ni baje

Yoruba land o ni baje

I thought yoruba peeps said they are the most educated ethnic group in Nigeria but majority of the low lifes here does not understand corporative advantage in a business settings? As a business developer, it will be cheaper to locate your business in an area that has cheap labor and easy access to international Seaport (Lagos). China for example, is where Apple manufactures her products yet Chinese citizens could not afford to buy a Iphone. It is more efficient and cheaper to manufacture iphone in China than United States but that does not mean that the people of china has better standard of living than Americans. Most Businesses are located in Lagos cos of its vast population, easy access to Sea Port, International airport and a former federal capital and at the end, those that will patronize the businesses will be from East and Northern Nigeria. I was at Four Point Hotel in Lekki last year and majority of the guest were Indians and Europeans and I never heard a single Yoruba language.

cap28: Actually I don't live in the US but ive been there many times and I know a whole lot more about that country than you will ever know.
Obama was elected president of America for a reason - he does not represent the interests of ordinary blacks, his entire presidential campaign was financed by AIPAC and wall street, he couldn't care less whether people like you live or die and this is quite obvious when you look at the way he refuses to associate himself with anything to do with black issues. as a matter of fact black unemployment has risen since he took office - so much for America's first so called black president.

you do not understand anything about how America is run - after the civil rights movement a few blacks were ASSISTED into positions of power in order to dupe dumb black people like yourself that America was now an equal society - nothing could be further from the truth.

it is quite obvious that nothing has changed - remember Trayvon - the 17 year old kid who was gunned down simply for being a black kid in the wrong place at the wrong time?

I am still waiting for you to dispute any of the facts that I set out earlier.

You need to show gratitude to black americans who made it possible for people like you to eat in the same restaurant with a white person without being dragged out and lynched in the street by whites

everything I have stated are facts which you are finding it difficult to dispute hence your pathetic attempt to dismiss them as conspiracy theories - I know you didn't study in the US because you still reason like a Nigerian who has never left Nigeria.
Damn you got me fooled negro, I thought I was having a debate with an exposed Nigeria? Anyways, I am done educating your ignorant and pathetic life. You are a jealous blackman and I see you kind every year I visit my village.

I noticed that successful ones among us are not buying the blame others for your downfall syndrome. Again, any intelligent Nigerian that is below 30years of age and feels Nigeria has nothing to offer them (ASSU), secure a student visa and come to America to study. I would advise you read a course that is of high demand, don't get distracted by the beautiful women and lazy minorities. It will be rough at first but the end of the Tunnel is always brighter. Bill Cosby is not a Nigerian or white but he is hated by blacks for telling them the truth.
For those that thought I came to America as an immigrant, you are wrong for that. I have a Yankee birth certificate like the OP but I worked as hard as my parents to become successful.

Black Panthers had nothing to do with Martin Luther King movement, son I thought you live in Virginia? Hit the public library and pick up a book. Why was there intra conflict between the black panther movement? Where was Umaru Shakur when civil right law was signed? United states government never negotiated with the blank panthers cos of their pedigree. Read Malcom X memo and learn about his regrets. I wouldn't be surprised your likes will starr blaming south side chicago recent violence on white supremacist.

cap28: that guy is a big fool.

You get these pathetic negroes who have never stood up for anything in their entire lives, but love reaping where they didn't sow, the same black americans that this fool describes as lazy fought this same racist system that he lives under and secured basic human rights for people like him.

His anger is that I posted a quote from Lincoln which shattered his day dreams about being accepted by white racist americans, white americans have not even accepted black americans who have lived with them for over 400 years let alone a black African immigrant with a Nigerian accent -

the western media is very powerful and has already ruined the image of Africans as being primitive and backward people if you don't believe watch national geographic and see how they portray Africans this is why Europeans and even Asians do no respect Africans.
You remind of the former Mayor of Detroit that blamed racism for his downfall. I have seen your kind before, shake my head and walk away from them. If Obama had your mentality he wouldn't become the president of United States. You must be one of those Nigerians that have been in America for 20years, if at all, and has nothing to show for it? Keep your conspiracy theory for those low life that are myopic as you. I am done playing on the sand with you.
