This is in part one of the reasons BARBIE is breaking records. Because the female audience haven't been catered for by Hollywood studios for a very long time. This is why it's an all time highest grossing movie as well as Titanic up till this day.
The male demographic have been the key target audience for Hollywood this past few decades.

False. Heavily gendered movies are a recipe for failure.

Barbie is successful because of strong IP and marketing.

Wonderwoman 2017 movie had good ratings and made 800 million. The movie catered well to female audience but it still didn't pass a billion.

In fact the wonderwoman movie should have passed a billion given how good it was.

Heavily gendering anything automatically risks alienating 50% of the audience- such is only done when you can be sure of capturing a huge majority of one gender.

that is not really a character arc...

It's simply a case of a villain obtaining more powers...

A character arc is an inner/outer journey of a character where the character develops as a result of various events they experience

Spot as a character did not face any inner obstacle. Right from when Miles met him, he always hated Miles and blamed Miles for destroying his life and his goal was to take revenge on Miles...

He simply acquired more powers to achieve his goal...nothing else changed in Spot...

It was because he became more powerful that Miles began to take him seriously...

That is not really a character arc...that is just a villain obtaining more powers to achieve his goal

Except you're just trying to use the phrase "character arc" in its loosest sense

It's not unusual for females to pick Puss over Spiderman. They don't really care about comic book characters

Ah.

But it depends on the females.

Nowadays cool babies watch anime and are comic geeks.

Family / How Some Men Package For Marriage And Deceive Women by Born2Freak(f): 12:43pm On Aug 10, 2023
As I am writing this, my friend's sister is considering divorce just after 5 months of marriage. She recently learnt that her husband is a serial debtor- a specialist in borrow-posing (borrowing things and acting as if you own them).

The husband in question is from a rich family but he spends money recklessly and borrows recklessly. His family was covering up for him and she thought that the man is responsible.

The point is that the woman (my friend's sister) was fooled by her husband's rich family and big house in Lekki. The family has a house in Lekki while the man rents in Ibeju Lekki.

But can we only blame the man? If my friend's sister was wise enough to do investigation into the man she was marrying, she would not have married him. She saw a rich family and didnt ask questions. The man does not really have a job. He just helps to manage the family's properties. The man also parties like a wild animal. But because he spends on her, she believed that he was a "big boy"

Now, the reality has set- loan apps and police have come looking for the husband at their apartment. The wife is getting different threatening phone calls and the husband quickly ran to the village to chill.

Please, for any woman that is going to get married, please do your proper investigation.
-Is your husband to be financially responsible (does he have a steady job or business?)
-Does your husband to be flirt with other girls or have cheating spirit?
-Is he a wife beater?
-Is he respected in his own family?

Open your eyes. Ask questions and be careful. Marriage is not a joke. My friend's sister is depressed today because she was carried away by greed and didnt look into her husband.

If you know, why are you still making noise? They are two very big brands that have been around for many years and this is the first time they have made live action movies that are shown on the big screen. So what is so difficult for you to understand? Super Mario Bros. had a production budget of around $100 million and a marketing budget of around $80–100 million, but still grossed over $1.3 billion. Didn't you see how popular it was? Why didn't you make noise about it?

Also, stop pretending that a $150 million marketing budget is the norm, when you compare the marketing budgets of other blockbusters we've seen over the last decade, you'll see that this one is tens of millions above average. What we have on our hands here is a very remarkable brand with a huge marketing budget that, and as it should, is growing in popularity, not surprising.

Guy, we are saying the same thing. It is the other guy that was saying that Barbie is a marketing phenomenon.

There is nothing special because the huge ip and huge marketing budget will guarantee sales

Except the babe stole your money or did some despicable shii to you, this level of hating is unreal and you should really snap out of it, except of course, you are a low life who probably has nothing going for him in real life so he thinks hating someone on a faceless forum for years gives him some sort of misguided validation.

Most people are now just posting reviews, for it cuz the HD version just dropped, so how is her review "typical" or why is her review pressing your scrotal sac so much that you have to spew this rubbish this fine August morning??

The villian arcs of Miguel O'hara and Spot were great but you find something to be vexed about, no counter argument, just straight up hating.

Seriously get a life before it's too late, so that your Tombstone won't read "Ishilove's biggest hater".

What was great about Miguel? Didn't he lack a full back story in the movie? The spot nko? A villain that is literally a joke character that the movie didn't focus on for the most part. The spiderverse itself was more important than the Spot.

Simps must always simp. cool

Spiderman: Across The Spiderverse

Wow. Just wow. The storyline, unique animation style, the music, humour, action sequences and character arc of the main villain makes this a masterpiece. I can't believe it is even more interesting than the first movie.

4.5 stars biko. I'm going to watch it again tomorrow

Typical Ishilove review.

1. Review comes late. Many months after the movie is released.

2. Always lacking when she fails to copy and paste from review sites.

Babe, which character arc of which villain made sense in Across the spiderverse?

Is it the Spot or Miguel Ohara because these guys were nothing special when it comes to arcs.

You were saying something that makes sense before 🤦🏽‍♂️. Where have you seen two movies opening on the same day make money as they are doing right now; Barbie is the first comedy movie, the only strictly comedic movie to make a billion, Oppenheimer is an R rated war drama that doesn't mean money and it will gross 700 million and above. It's the first double feature in the history of cinema to get to 1.6 billion in less than three weeks
Most of Barbenheimer advertising is from the fans who are trying to profit from the hype naw

Abduleez1, is this your brother? See shalaye menn!!

Bro, Barbie is not just a comedy movie. Barbie has always been a huge intellectual property since 1959. It has been popular since the 60s- before you were born.

Before Barbie, the Mario movie, which is in the same category of being a comedic movie based on an established IP, made over a billion dollars.

Saving Private Ryan is a war movie that made 482 million dollars at the box office in 1992. That amount adjusted for inflation is worth more than 700 million that Oppenheimer made.

Nothing special

I and Oyaskii dey tell ppl back then that Barbie marketing is organic as well as input from studio.

You know how many ppl and small independent businesses were making Barbie themed services. People dey make Barbie themed flavor for coffee drinks, ice cream and what not just to tap that Barbie trend.

There's one stupid account on twitter that annoyingly spams Barbenheimer T-shirts on almost every thread and comment about Barbie. Ppl wan cash out. Why do ppl make topics tailored to Twitter trends?? Cos everyone wants exposure.
Those two movies are a marketing phenomenon.

Marketing phenomenon indeed.

Have these movies done something that hasn't been done before?

Disney, WB etc have all uses memes and products to hype movies. They have done it better. Call me when Barbie reaches over 2 billion.

Lmao, I'll still choose THR, Variety or Deadline over Reuters in Hollywood matters especially movie financials.
Why? Because it's not its area of specialization.

The bolded is why you're a classic Dumbo. 😂
So you think all the whole $880mn goes to the studio?? 😳😳 Theatres takes their share of every ticket sold. Let's even assume all the $880mn was made in America where cinemas take around a 50-52% cut (it's higher overseas & 75% in China). That money reduces to $440mn. So your $500mn expenses on marketing and production means the movie is at a loss of $60mn.
I've not even talked about distribution costs, insurance and interest. Etc. grin

It's clear you're a rookie and I'm actually wasting my time discussing box office with a neophyte who wants to feel among. Learn to walk before you run kiddo. 😂😂🤭

Where better person dey wey actually Sabi wetin him dey talk dey sef.... I'm bored. 🥱🥱

Agba shalaye master.
Carry on.

In America, studios can take up to 90% on the opening weeks of ticket sales. So stop lying

Even if takes 60% of all ticket sales of 880 million, there would still be a profit.

Lmao, so na BuzzFeed article I'll take over Variety an entrenched Hollywood publication?

The article says the production budget is $300mn and the marketing costs is $200-250mn; and somehow they deem it to have "paid off" in the end with an $880mn worldwide gross. grin grin

You and the guy that wrote the article have zero knowledge about box office. Cos there is no way that film breaks even with those figures talk more of make a profit.
I don't know which of you is a bigger Clown. grin grin

You are still struggling to drop your "numerous" movies with such humongous budget and sticking with your penchant of saying things you don't know. 😂😂

The buzzfeed article quoted its source from Reuters. Reuters has more clout than Variety.

Making 880 million after spending 500 million on production and marketing is not perfect but it is still a profit. Or we're you thinking that the movie had to double the 500 million like a JJC?.

You're still not saying anything meaningful as always. Dropping one or two handful movies means shït when it ain't the norm.

I'm not even going to need to search the internet up till 2015 to get a list of films with $100-150mn budget. Only 2023 movies alone, I can drop up to 10.

You can keep deluding yourself you did something there.

Where did you get Spectre with a $200+mn marketing budget? A movie Sony was getting angry about its increasing crazy production budget. They now spent almost the same amount for marketing?? You must live in an alternate universe. Or you most likely don't know the difference between production and marketing budget.

I like how you talk as if you know everything. Mr MC Shalaye. Just hold your L in peace

Ogbeni, Spectre's marketing budget was between 200 to 250 million Dollars. Proof is below.

You're the one still capping nonsense. Is Endgame not a bigger movie or in the same level as Way of The Water??

An exception is not the norm.

Now show me other movies with that kind of $200mn marketing budget since you love yarning rubbish as always.

Yes. I'm sure you know that Avatar way of the Water had a 200 million dollar marketing budget.

Also, Spectre had a budget of between 200 to 250 million dollars for marketing.

I'm always happy to prove you wrong.

Current estimates says $150mn. You get the real picture a few months time.

But realistically, Hollywood don't spend over $150mn for even their biggest blockbusters. So that price is reasonable.
Only if you're Avatar: The Way of the Water you spend $175mn on marketing.

The Avengers Endgame had a 200 million dollar budget.

Be Shalaye-ing nonsense there

All this one na just cap Baba. There's many things going well for Barbie and a huge part was the director and the cast. Greta Gerwig is well loved by her fans and critics alike. Her name alone brought optimism and removed doubts for many in that film. Couple that with Margot Robbie popularity and rich cast. One of the most stacked cast with top talent actors, and you people are wondering why it's performing this good, while being an internet sensation?? All those cast are also actors very popular with young people.
Una dey funny walahi. 😅😂😂

All these funny talk didn't come out when the movie was announced or months close to its debut. It's mainly folks in Nigeria here on Nairaland that I've been seeing weird comments from the beginning that it would flop.
Some of you just want to talk and discredit the film cos you don't like it.

Europeans and Americans don't have this weird thinking. It was always bound to be successful, just how successful was the question.

This is not the first Barbie movie has little to no water. Cos none of those movies were theatrically released. Direct to home video releases rarely counts as shït these days when it comes to box office collection.
All this Shalaye pro max didn't come out when Beauty and The Beast went on to gross $1.26bn in 2015 despite there being numerous movies about it before.

What is this one saying? I always knew that Barbie would blow.

My only question is how much was spent on marketing.
TV/Movies / Re: What Movie Are You Watching Now? by Born2Freak(f): 4:18am On Aug 08, 2023
abduleez1:

Lol, that film marketing ain't more than that $150mn. Many businesses keyed in on the hype to sell their brands. Not the other way round with WB paying them. They're the one supposed to be paying. It's a form of product placement.
Majority of Barbie's promo was free marketing cos everybody wanted that exposure in the social media, offline and everywhere.

The marketing team are actual genius and just tapped into the power of social media marketing.
It was the most talked about film for months before its debut sef..... So I'm not too surprised it's overperforming.

This is not the first Barbie movie.

From my experience in critical marketing, very few things are naturally viral.

For instance, Disney worked with McDonald's to promote Mulan in 1998 by creating a special Chinese sauce- Szechuan sauce.

It is not hard to believe that the marketers behind Barbie did the same.

It was clear that Barbie was going to make a billion. The IP has been popular and trending since the 60s. The marketing was out of this world.

I suspect that they are not telling the truth. The estimated 150 million dollars on marketing is not true. I believe that it is more than that. Celebs and big brand fast food companies all going pink for Barbie. That is not small marketing

I wanted it to flop but the masses are many
