JUST a month before Kenya plays Nigeria in a World Cup qualifier match in Nairobi, the country’s football governing body, FKF, has raised a red flag, saying its coffers are empty. FKF has put the government and well wishers on notice that unless they get a $2.5 million (about N320 million) windfall, then the chances of Harambee Stars honouring their qualifiers were nil. The Stars have their return-leg fixtures against Super Eagles, Malawi’s Flames and Namibia between June 5 and September 6. “The federation needs at least $125,000 (about N197, 000) for the match against Nigeria. The bulk of the funds will be for the purchase of air tickets for foreign-based players and accommodating the visiting team. “The funds will also cover players’ allowances and payments to match officials,” FKF Chairman, Sam Nyamweya said in a statement Wednesday. Kenya plays Nigeria on June 5 in a World Cup qualifier and then travels to Malawi one week later for the same competition. There is also another World Cup qualifier against Namibia in Nairobi on September 6. Should Kenya fail in its obligation to host or honour any of the away matches, then they stand to be fined and banned by World Football Governing body, FIFA. Meanwhile, former Super Eagles coach, Paul Hamilton, has urged Nigerians to support Coach Stephen Keshi to overcome the Harambee Stars in the return leg of the World Cup qualifiers scheduled for June 5. Hamilton told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Wednesday that Nigerians have a lot to do for the players to come out victoriously. “We know Keshi is the coach and he tutors the players, but remember he is not a super man and we all need to support him in order for us all to be happy. “All hands must be on deck and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) should support him and respect his wishes because I think he knows what the best is. “Remember, as an ex-international, who had passed through the stage of being a player, he knows how to get the best performance from the players,’’ Hamilton said. He added that the players should ensure that they take possession of the ball right from the beginning to the end and avoid last minute mistakes. “Our players usually get carried away at the late minutes of a match, thereby giving room to the last minute mistakes of conceding goals. This is so because they relax, such occurrences should be prevented in this match and in subsequent ones,’’ he said. Meanwhile, the Chairman, NFF Technical Committee, Chris Green has said that the federation was prepared for a showdown match in Kenya and that Nigeria would be victorious. Green, who however, declined to disclose how the team intends to overcome the Harambee Stars, assured that the Eagles would maintain its top position in the group. http://www.guardiannewsngr.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=121213:super-eagles-may-get-three-free-points-as-funds-threaten-kenyas-bid&catid=59:home&Itemid=620 |

automaticcarzz: Don't believe everything you read on newspaper. It is just not possible that they picked Buhari already. Doing so jeopardises their chances to show their democratic tendency. It is against the law and he would be disqualified if they just pick him without election at the convention. I don't believe it. My mind tells me Fashola, Rocha or Oshiohmole is going to be the nominee. Don't forget the same newspaper said two days ago Buhari was stepping down for younger and more qualified candidate. One the names you mentioned above can only come as running mate! Mark my word |

Nigeria’s first online university has been launched by Gossy Ukanwoke who has been nicknamed Nigeria’s Mark Zuckerberg. Called Beni American University, Gossy who is also the founder of the Students Circle Network, an academic social network for students, teachers and institutions that brings over 10,000 free academic resources from over 200 universities globally, and shares it free for students and teachers, said he foresaw it “as a way of clearing the logjam in Africa’s educational sector of its several challenges that avails just some number of Africans an opportunity to be literate hence the essence of his innovation”. “We realised that there was just a couple of issues in the educational sector in Africa. We have universities but they are not enough in comparison to the youth population. We have universities but the infrastructure is a challenge and then the cost of setting up something new was also a challenge. We were also looking at something that we could easily accommodate as many people as possible without the constraint of location or space or resources, so online was the best alternative for us. With an online university, you can take in as many students as possible; you can get professors from across the world. We have professors who are in the US, we have professors in Malawi, and we have professors in England.” Andrew Ebegore, already a registered student of the online university shared his experience as he tells how easy life is to study as he does his work during leisure, gets an opportunity to interact and above all schooling take place right in his living room. “I actually do my school work at my leisure time not at my work time, it allows me to meet different people from around the world, I get to interact with students and lecturers and some seasoned lecturers from around the world, professors and all that. It’s good because I interact, I learn, I do everything and I don’t leave my house which makes it superb.” A professor of Science and Technology in the University of Lagos, Duro Ajeyalemi, described it as “a laudable idea” which will bridge the gap in terms of challenges plaguing African youths but “right now the resources for successful running of the online university as it is not made available”. “We do not have the resources enough to cope and many of our… because we have problems with infrastructure, electricity for example is not available in most places so we will need to have constant supply of electricity, we will need to have the computers and the technology for you to be able to benefit maximally.” Gossy Ukanwoke believes that the high unemployment rate which has cut across the world and Africa especially can actually be brought to the low by entrepreneurship and empowerment which he and his team ensured is in the curriculum for those studying management courses in the university. “There is a high level of unemployment across the world and one of the things that can actually deal with unemployment is entrepreneurship and empowerment, so what we are doing is even if you are studying Business Management in our university, you will still take our entrepreneurship program, even if you are studying medicine in our university, you will still take our entrepreneurship program so that you can learn how as a doctor or as an engineer or as a Home Economics graduate how you can actually start a business and become an employer of labour instead of being someone who is seeking for employment". http://www.channelstv.com/home/2013/04/30/nigerias-entrepreneur-introduces-first-online-university/?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter

Former Nigerian lawmaker, Dino Melaye, has sued ex-Governor Ibrahim Idris of Kogi State over alleged corruption, looting and massive misappropriation of state funds. The former lawmaker accuses Mr. Idris of squandering N57 billion of the state’s fund during an eight-month period that the Supreme Court decided that the governor overstayed in office. Mr. Melaye, who heads an anti-corruption network, wants Mr. Ibrahim Idris declared guilty of looting the funds spent by his administration within a period that the Supreme Court declared the administration illegal. The court ruling was handed down last year. Mr. Melaye’s lawsuit commenced yesterday in a Lokoja High Court, with I. Akubo appearing as the former governor’s defense lawyer. Mr. Idris was removed from office alongside four other governors last year after a ruling by the Supreme Court held that they were enjoying an illegally extended tenure. The other governors affected by the ruling were Murtala Nyako of Adamawa State, Timipre Sylva of Bayelsa, Aliyu Wamakko of Sokoto and Liyel Imoke of Cross River State. All five governors removed by the Supreme Court judgment belonged to the the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Mr. Melaye’s suit was adjourned to May 15, 2013. Meanwhile, several sources in Kogi State told Saharareporters that Mr. Melaye, a former member of the House of Representatives, is planning to run for the governorship of the state. An associate of former Governor Idris told our correspondent that Mr. Melaye’s lawsuit was an effort by the ex-lawmaker to prop up his political credentials. “He’s just trying to use this lawsuit to announce that he has arrived,” said the critic. http://saharareporters.com/news-page/dino-melaye-sues-ex-kogi-governor-ibrahim-idris-alleges-n57b-loot-state-fund |
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has informed the leaders of the All Progressive Congress (APC) that its acronym, contained in the application for registration as a political party is in conflict with that of another political party seeking registration, The African Peoples Congress (APC). This was made known by INEC's Secretary, Mr. Abdullahi Kaugama in a letter dated April 23, 2013. The letter which was addressed to the leaders of the All Progressive Congress and their lawyers suggested a name change as an option for guaranteed registration as a political party. http://allafrica.com/stories/201304300061.html |

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has revealed plans to revisit a N20billion case against the Governor of Rivers state, Rotimi Amaechi, which he allegedly embezzled in 2006 while serving as the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly. Investigations also revealed that part of the charges levelled against Amaechi by the commission are the illegal acquisition of Reliance Bank Building (N400 million), Fleet House (N650 million) all on Olusegun Obasanjo Road, Port Harcourt and other choice buildings in the highbrow Old GRA of Port Harcourt. Also inclusive is his official Guest House while serving as speaker. In view of the above, professionals in the state have called on the EFCC to initiate an immediate probe on governor Rotimi Amaechi over his questionable weekly trips to the United Kingdom between 1999 to 2006, the palatial mansion he acquired for himself, and other houses purchased for Chief G. U. Ake, the PDP's Vice-Chairman of the South-South region. They have also accused the Governor of plundering tax payers' money between 1999 to 2006 through Local Government Chairmen who used developmental funds to pay tribute to him to the tune of N20 million. These are funds that would have been used to develop the various local government areas in the state. Now the question remains, how can Rotimi Amaechi, a public servant, who was unemployed in 1998 become a billionaire overnight in 2007? http://www.ipaidabribenaija.com/news/efcc/item/22284-efcc-plans-revisit-on-rotimi-amaechi%E2%80%99s-n20billion-case |
For stealing a N50,000 Sony Ericsson phone belonging to Governor Rauf Aregbesola, a 31-year-old Kelvin Ighodalo has been sentenced to 45-year imprisonment by an Osogbo High Court. Ighodalo stole the phone from the pocket of Aregbesola on November 27, 2010, when the governor was being inaugurated at Government Technical College, Osogbo. Justice Oyejide Falola, who heard the case, found Ighodalo guilty on six counts, which included conspiracy, stealing and fraud. He was sentenced to 10-year imprisonment for the first three counts and five years for each of the last three which included impersonation, obtaining property by falsehood and collusion. Falola, who ruled that Ighodalo deserved the jail term, held that the convict used the phone to obtain N500, 000 from the Owa of Ilesa, Oba Adekunle Aromolaran, while he obtained N200, 000 from Mr Shengen Rahman, an associate of the governor. The jail term, which Falola pronounced will run concurrently, means that Ighodalo will spend the next 10 years behind bars. Assistant principal state counsel, Mr Biodun Badiora, told the court that the convict had served six-year imprisonment in Ikoyi prison custody in connection with a murder case in 2005. Counsel to Ighodalo, Mr. Ameachi Ngwu, prayed the court to commit him to community service, stressing that the convict should not be incarcerated but rather be placed where people could see him as a convict. Meristem: Now that they have banned suarez, their attack will lack BITEBut they won Newcastle by 6 goals to nil without Suarez |
usmsam: Nigerian Christians just baffle me. How can you say you believe in God and at the same time believe in ritualists. If you have enough faith in God, you shouldn't even believe such nonsense exists because it does not. Rubbish! When the bible itself acknowledged the existence of principalities and powers! Infact, christian should believe more in their existence and that is what actually strengthen your faith, trusting that God's power is above all other powers |
Now, soccer fans are politicizing this; some are saying FA does not want suarez to win the golden boot. Why did he bite Ivanovich in the first place? If it were to be in Nigeria, I would say his village people are at work ![]() |
LUIS SUAREZ has been given a 10-match suspension for his shocking bite attack on Branislav Ivanovic. The Liverpool hot-head yesterday admitted a charge of violent conduct. And Suarez’s season has today been ended after an independent panel hit him with the bumper ban. The standard punishment for violent conduct is three games but the FA had claimed that was “clearly insufficient”. Suarez last night denied he should recieve extra punishment. But the FA have today got their way and the Uruguay bad-boy is now facing a lenghty spell on the sidelines. http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/sport/football/4901117/Luis-Suarez-banned-for-10-games.html#ixzz2RODhdFjU |
tomakint: In as much as many people will not agree with the submission of Okupe here, it is very glaring that ACN has been taken to the slaughter house in future elections in SW as a result of the merger with APC! I stand to be corrected, ACN still has more relevance in the national scene as a strong opposition unlike the hurriedly planned APC, yes Okupe was absolutely right on this one that, ACN has just committed political suicide with that political amalgamation with other strange bed fellowsWhat do you know about politics? |

(CNN) -- One suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings is dead. The other -- his brother- - was on the run Friday, pursued by an army of police whose manhunt virtually shut down the city. Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, died after an overnight shootout with police. He's the man described Thursday by the FBI as black-capped Suspect No. 1 in the attacks that killed three. His brother, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, apparently escaped -- leading police to throw a huge dragnet around the region. Developments moved quickly: -- Connecticut authorities said a gray Honda CR-V with Massachusetts license plates had been recovered in the Boston area. An earlier alert said the vehicle "could possibly be occupied" by the surviving suspect. Meanwhile, heavily armed police swarmed over a Watertown, Massachusetts, neighborhood looking for the man, identified by Boston police as Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19. -- The slain suspect, identified by several sources as Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, the fugitive suspect's older brother, was wearing explosives and a triggering device when he died, a source briefed on the investigation told CNN's Deborah Feyerick. -- A Maryland man who said he was the suspects' uncle told CNN affiliate WBZ that Tamerlan Tsarnaev "got what he deserved." "What can I say for people who have been murdered? Sympathy," Ruslan Tsarni said. But a neighbor and former teacher at the high school Dzhokhar Tsarnaev attended described the younger brother as "a wonderful kid" who seemed incapable of such violence. -- According to a source briefed on the investigation, the brothers came from the Russian Caucasus and had moved to Kazakhstan at a young age before coming to the United States several years ago. Police: 1 suspect dead, 1 on the run Witness: We heard explosions, gunshots Armed police sweep Boston homes Deadly shooting at MIT -- Police ordered businesses in the suburb of Watertown and nearby communities to stay closed and told residents to stay inside and answer the door for no one but authorities. Boston authorities advised the same. The city's subway, bus, Amtrak train systems and Greyhound and Bolt Bus -- a regional carrier -- have been shut down. Taxi service across the city also was suspended for time during the manhunt. Every Boston area school is closed. --The search followed a violent night in which authorities say the men allegedly hurled explosives at pursuers after killing Massachusetts Institute of Technology police Officer Sean Collier, robbing a convenience store and hijacking a car. Police warned Watertown residents to lock their homes and stay away from their windows and doors. "It's jarring," said CNN Belief blog writer Danielle Tumminio, who lives in Watertown. Oluwaseun Odewale, who lives in Arlington, described his neighborhood as "deathly quiet." "All my doors are double-locked. It's silent all around, there are no usual sounds of cars, nothing," he said. Boston's public transit authority sent city buses to Watertown to evacuate residents while bomb experts combed the surroundings for possible explosives. Police officers in full body armor, carrying automatic weapons, flooded the area, traveling the streets in convoys and going door-to-door to track the suspect down. Massachusetts State Police spokesman Col. Timothy Alben asked residents for patience. "We need more time," he said. "We're making significant progress up there. But it may take hours to do this." "This situation is grave." Alben said earlier. "This is a very serious situation that we are dealing with." Honoring the Boston bombing victims David Green: I took one picture Did suspects use timer or remote? Social media during a disaster Violent night The violence began late Thursday with the robbery of a 7/11 convenience store, according to Alben. Soon after, in Cambridge, across the Charles River from Boston, Massachusetts Institute of Technology police officer Sean Collier was fatally shot while he sat in his car, the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office said in statement. Police believe the bombing suspects were responsible for the shooting. The two suspects, according to authorities, then hijacked a car at gunpoint in Cambridge. They released the driver a half-hour later at a gas station. As police picked up the chase, the car's occupants threw explosives out the windows and shot at officers, according to the district attorney's office. Officers fired back, wounding Tamerlan Tsarnaev. He later died at Beth Israel Hospital. A source briefed on the investigation says Tsarnaev was wearing explosives and an explosive trigger when his body was recovered. His brother apparently escaped on foot. Richard H. Donohue Jr., 33, a three-year veteran of the transit system police force, was shot and wounded in the incident and taken to a hospital, a transit police spokesman said Friday. The officer's condition was not immediately known. Details about the suspects Police believe the brothers are the same men pictured in images released Thursday by the FBI as suspects in the marathon bombing that killed three people Monday. The men are shown in the images walking together near the marathon finish line. The first suspect -- apparently Tamerlan Tsarnaev, according to authorities -- appears in the images wearing a dark hat, sunglasses and a backpack. The second suspect, wearing a white cap, is the one who remains at large, police said. The men moved to the United States at least a few years ago, according to sources. A statement from the office of Chechnya's president echoed that: "According to preliminary information, coming from the relevant agencies, the Tsarnaev family moved many years ago out of Chechnya to another Russian region," press secretary Alvi Kamirov told Russia's semi-official Interfax news agency. "After that they lived for some time in Kazakhstan, and from there went to the U.S. where the family members received a residence permit. Therefore the individuals concerned did not live as adults in Chechnya." Tamerlan Tsarnaev had studied at Bunker Hill Community College and wanted to become an engineer, the source said. He then took a year off to train as a boxer. The source said that a posting on a social media site in his name included the comments: "I don't have a single American friend. I don't understand them." Dzhokhar Tsarnaev attended Cambridge Rindge & Latin, a public high school, said Eric Mercado, who graduated a year behind the suspect. Mercado said Tsarnaev had worked at Harvard University as a lifeguard. "We hung out; we partied; we were good high school friends," Mercado told CNN. "We're all, like, in shock. We don't really understand. There were no telltale signs of any kind of malicious behavior from Dzhokhar. It's all coming as a shock, really." Mercado said he lived a block away from the suspect and did not know his older brother. Larry Aaronson, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev's neighbor and a former teacher at the high school Tsarnaev attended, called him a "wonderful kid." "He was so grateful to be here, he was compassionate, he was caring, he was jovial," Aaronson told CNN. http://edition.cnn.com/2013/04/19/us/boston-area-violence/index.html |

After weeks of intense debates, the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, the Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, the All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP, and a faction of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, have finally adopted a manifesto, in which it enunciated plans to tackle corruption in Nigeria. The parties had, in February, announced their plan to merge into one party to be known as All Progressives Congress, APC. Consequently, the parties went into series of meetings during which it agreed on the constitution, manifesto, logo, motto and slogan. Some of the documents are to be submitted alongside the application for registration to the Independent National Electoral Commission at the end of the national conventions of the parties, where the merger is to be approved by members. According to the manifesto, exclusively obtained by PREMIUM TIMES, the association spells out an ambitious action plan to aggressively tackle corruption, which a source said generated hot argument before it was finally adopted last week. Some members of the association reportedly canvassed the need to include specific details, which will endear it to Nigerians above the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, which it believes has not done well in that regard since assuming power at the federal level about 13 years ago. The APC specifically declared in the 29-page document that if it comes to power in 2015, it would not only renegotiate oil deals, but would also remove the secrecy surrounding the ownership of 40% of the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas, NLNG, and query the utilisation of the over N50 trillion oil revenue it claimed accrued to the Federation Account in the last 13 years PDP has been in power. During the period, the PDP produced three Presidents, namely Olusegun Obasanjo (1999-2007), Umaru Yar’Adua (2007-2010) and incumbent Goodluck Jonathan (2010 till date). The 20-member APC Manifesto (Logo, Slogan and Motto) Committee was headed by Audu Ogbeh, a former National Chairman of the PDP. “We shall negotiate oil deals, unveil the secrecy surrounding the ownership of 49% of the Nigeria Liquefied, NLNG, query the over N50 trillion Oil Revenue which accrued to the Federation Account between 2000 and 2013 and recover billions of US Dollars which Ministries, Departments and Agencies, failed to remit to the Federation Account,” the association declared on Section 1 Page 5 of the adopted manifesto. The APC also declared that it would not only strengthen and make independent the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, and other anti-graft agencies by repealing the laws which inhibit their independent, it would also review public service rules and financial regulations which currently permit outrageous impropriety in public finances. It also promised to push for the removal of the immunity clause in the constitution which shields the president, vice president, governors and deputy governors from prosecution while in office. “APC in Government shall muster the political will to wage strident war against corruption; otherwise our post-oil-economy will be disastrous,” the manifesto stated. “It is our considered view that none of our cardinal programs will succeed if the current level of corruption and looting going on in the land is allowed to continue. “We shall plug all leakages which accelerate monumental corruption, recover looted funds, cap and trim unwarranted allowances to public office holders.” With a view to sanitising the electoral process if it comes to power, the APC also adopted for its manifesto some recommendations of the defunct Electoral Reform Committee, otherwise known as Uwais Panel, set up by late President Umaru Yar’Adua. Among the recommendations listed on Page 6 under the same section, are that it will “make the appointment of the chairman and top officials of the National and State Electoral Commissions public” and that the “Burden of Proof shall rest on the Electoral Commissioners.” It did not expatiate on the recommendations. On power, APC said in Section 4 Page 8 of the document that it will pursue the expansion of electricity generation and distribution of up to 40,000 megawatts in the four to eight years of its administration. It added, “The party will also work assiduously at making available power from renewable energy sources such as coal solar, wind and biomass for domestic and industrial use, whenever these prove viable.” The APC also said in Section 23 Page 25 of the manifesto that, upon its assumption of office, it will begin wide consultations to amend the Constitution with a view to decentralizing the police command and expand local content. It also promised to establish a well-trained, adequately equipped and goals-driven Serious Crime Squad to combat terrorism, kidnapping, armed robbery, militancy, ethno-religious and communal clashes nationwide. On politics and governance enunciated in Section 24 Page 26 of the document, APC promised among other things, to initiate action to amend the constitution with a view to devolving powers, duties and responsibilities to states and local governments in order to entrench Federalism and the Federal Spirit; remove immunity from prosecution for elected public officers in criminal cases; ensure full implementation of the Freedom of Information (FoI) Act so that government held data set can be requested and used by the media and public at large and then publish at large, and then on regular basis; and restructure government for a leaner, more efficient and less expensive public service. “APC believes that our politics is broke. Our nation urgently needs fundamental political reform and improvement in governance to make it more transparent and accountable,” the manifesto stressed. On the social scene, APC also said it would not only invest in massive human capital that would encourage the youth, it promised to “assist Nollywood to fully develop into world-class industry that can compete effectively with Hollywood and Bollywood in due course. http://premiumtimesng.com/news/130298-apc-manifesto-jonathan-obasanjo-to-face-probe-immunity-for-president-governors-to-go.html |
