I one day noticed my vehicle started vibrating btw 20 and 40kmph, i have changed the shaft (axle), it shopped shaking for abt a week and then started again. i have also changed the engine mounts. Tires are brand new, rims are OK.
Has anyone experienced this problem? Kindly share how it was solved.

When does the vibration occur? If the car vibrates as you depress your gas pedal, it most likely will be your axles. Sometimes bad tires can cause the same problem. The replacement shafts you bought...are they new or used? if the are used, most likely they were bad as well. It's often difficult to get good ones because parts sellers are dubious & insincere; always refitting used parts and sell as direct (tokunbo in the Nigerian parlance).

Also ensure your ball joints are good.

I will sell all, buy something I need for daily commute & use the money for business.

Perhaps, I win this one.

He has fallen victim to all these cotounu car guys,but now prefers to pay and pick his car instead of waiting endlessly ans entrusting a total stranger with one's asset.Is there any danger,will he get a good deal.please advice

There are two major concerns when buying at Berger; rampant odometer rollback and prevalent incidence of smuggling of car from Cotonou with doctored documents as being cleared at Tincan. However, a vin report & document confirmation at customs post at Grimaldi will help you avoid this.

This two occurrence makes it mandatory for one to be extremely cautious while buying from there.

I think the OP is faster than his shadow. He ought to have waited for the grace period to elapse before coming onto Nairaland to threaten to expose a deal he isn't sure how it could end. It is always almost certain that the dealer won't refund especially considering the amount involved. I do not know how they met, but why pay for two vehicles at a time when you have never had a business transaction with this dealer. It is better to err on the side of caution.

While some of us struggle real hard to make money some don't and may not necessarily bother about how they spend it. For those of us who have to crack our nuts ourselves, we differ from those whose nuts have been cracked by some benevolent spirits. In as much as I do not believe in pre-order as a way of automobile purchase, those who do should engage in due diligence before parting with a huge amount of money. This should be a strong lesson for many intending buyers.

Also, it is very difficult to even trust relations let alone an outright stranger residing overseas. Only few could be trusted but money is very tempting. I bought two cars from the UK sometime last year. One of my childhood friends & brother insisted I patronize one of his cousins who is a clearing agent to clear one of the cars for me. My friend vouched for his cousin & promised to reimburse me should anything go wrong. I accepted & contacted the agent based on my negotiation with my friend. Note that the agent who shipped the car for me from the UK also has a clearing department here in Nigeria & usually clears within three days all things being equal.

The agent had assured me that clearing will be done within seven days. But one month down the line, nothing has happened. The agent spent the 250,000 Naira advance payment he requested out of the 300k we agreed. A month & a week later, he requested for full payment as a condition for clearing the car. My concern then was the goods I had in that vehicle. My friend who recommended the agent had to lend him additional 150k just to ensure he got the vehicle out. That money disappeared within hours with no result. It took additional two more weeks to get the vehicle out of the port. The rest is history.

The psychological & emotional trauma that follows such transaction is unjustifiably unquantifiable. Imagine your relationship with your colleagues who trusted you with their money will be in tatters. Even if the dealer later refunds you or delivers the cars, they most probably will never trust you. It is better to buy what you can see & spend more time building it to your taste. Some have argued that you get the best deal via pre-order but again forgetting that the dealer is also a businessman who wants to maximize profit.

Hello geeks, I'm about to acquire a new car, and my choice has been the below listed cars which are within my budget as i intend to buy nigerian used. However before i make my final decision i hereby seek the advice of car expert in the house.

Your Nissan Almera falls within the same category of compact car with the Toyota corolla & Honda Civic. The running cost of both cars will be almost the same either in MPG or cost of spare parts. They are both reliable and come with 4 & 5 speed automatic transmission respectively & the decision of which to purchase could come down to aesthetic appeal. They both have the 1.8l Vtec & VVT-I engine displacement. They are excellent for daily commute in cities.

However, acquiring the Honda Accord will translate to a decent upgrade to a family sedan offering a bigger engine (2.0l - 2.4l), better performance & drive experience. The accord cannot be compared with the Corolla or the Civic. Invariable, it will cost more to acquire and maintain in the long run both in terms of MPG and replacement parts.

Finally, the decision to buy any depends on your financial inflow albeit willingness to stick with manufacturers' recommendations for routine maintenance.

You seem disappointed with comments so far with this response and sounded rather hash. Quite unnecessary.

However, the car in question is rugged, reliable and durable. The recommended engine oil is 5w30. There's the synthetic, semi-synthetic and mineral oil of this rating. The choice of which to use is yours. I think the recommended Oil Change Interval (OCI) is 5000 miles, absolutely imperative to stick to that. Do not remove the thermostat and connect your fan directly. This will be your Achilles heel with the car.

Buy original parts & as already suggested by someone else, scan when malfunction indicator (cel) displays on the instrument cluster. Never use a roady (Kazeem). Seems expensive but cheaper in the long run. Please use radiator coolant instead of water in the coolant compartment. Original parts are a bit pricey but they worth the efforts.

Keep you car clean at all times and engage in preventive maintenance rather than fix when broken. Above all, drive with caution, observe traffic rules & respect other road users. Again, don't engage in an unnecessary competition with other drivers in a bid to shows off the strength of your car. Good luck.

Both vehicles cannot be compared. It's and apple to orange comparison. However, all things being equal; the Corolla will offer a better MPG because of the size of the engine & body. The Rav4 is heavier both in the engine and body. They are targeted at different audience. The corolla is a compact car while the Rav4 is a crossover SUV. In terms of maintenance, using original parts they would come at almost the same cost.

Depending on what you want out of a car, you need to analyse your reason for ownership. Since the corolla is a more recent model and if properly maintained I would most likely choose it ahead of the 2005 Rav4.

Possible causes may include that your thermostat is stuck in the open/closed position, clogged radiator, fan not working/ spinning at the required speed etc. Start with these ones and employ an elimination technique.

You seem not to have learnt anything yet. This is an online forum; you type as though you are sending an SMS. People from all walks of life visit here and need to make sense of your post. Irrespective of the device you use, there's always room to do the right thing. So your excuse of using a certain type of device does not suffice, all of us use different devices.

You bought an abused Honda Accord. Maintenance is vital to car ownership. It is always advisable to engage in a preventive maintenance rather than the Nigerian attitude of "if it's not broken don't fix it". Most Nigerian used cars have hidden problems. They begin to surface after a while of purchase.

The overheating problem often start with the abuse I mentioned earlier arising from thermostat removal to using water as coolant or even the wrong type of coolant. A lot of car owners prefer to use fake parts because of cost of OEM parts. One good example is the general use of 20w-50 engine oil rating.

Irrespective of which model you are buying, you need to treat it right. Honda vehicles are more sensitive than its cousin competitor Toyota. You pay dearly for any kind of abuse especially they new model ones. You are not specific in terms of what vehicles are in offer for your swoop. The Acura & Infinity FX you listed are of a different class to the Camry & Corolla. What model of Mercedes are you referring to here? When buying a car, you should factor in cost of long time usage not just the immediate cost of acquisition.

My toyota Rav4 2001 4 cylinder 4 wheel drive makes this persistent kpom sound each time it is being driven.The sound is not heard when the car is in high motion but when it slows down it is heard as frequent as every minute.The sound seems to be coming from the back tyres but a check on the tyres shows it is not from the tyres.

Irrespective of who was driving at the time the picture was taken, that's a terrifying speed on that deplorable Lagos - Ibadan express. I doubt that whoever drove that vehicle cares much about life.

Sack is absolutely an understatement, his license should be revoked if he has one.

I have personally used your services in the past and can conveniently recommend your service to others. I have also spoken to you on different occasions. Your business model is commendable especially providing responses (vin reports) within minutes of submitting such requests.

On the other hand, I think you need to do more in terms of marketing & branding to create more awareness of your service. Not many people intending to buy vehicles know much about such services. Also, spread your advert to other states outside Lagos.

From personal experience, 250k a month is grossly insufficient to adequately take care of your needs especially when you do get married. The offer may seem attracting but given your qualifications, it is not. You may have also incurred some cost for your current research programme; abandoning it half way is not the best of decisions. An average paying job in the US or UK will offer thrice that amount in a month. You may argue about taxes etc.

The decision you make will not be a straight forward one. Depending on where you intend to live if you accept the offer, you will need to buy a car at some point, pay bills and most of all, get married. When kids start coming, that amount could barely suffice. Although you have mentioned other unnamed benefits that go with the offer - do they include car loan, house loan (outright purchase), medical, retirement package etc.? The Nigerian economy is very uncertain; corruption is our bane and may not improve in the nearest future. A lot of companies are laying off employees. An offer in the region of 700k makes much sense than the current one.

You may also want to research a bit more how (often) promotion and pay raise are done in the organization and what career prospects are available... Most organizations project a global image while in essence, they are not. You can only find out when you get in.

Living & working in the US may offer a different level of work experience and a guaranteed future for your kids if you have them there. You can also work for a number of years in the US and come back to invest.

I think it's important you complete you programme and seek employment afterwards. You can explain to the organization that you already embarked upon a PH.D programme. Who knows, the company might require your skills at some point if you keep in touch.

Start your engine, pull the gear select lever from P tru R N D to 3 2 1 depending on how your selector us labelled and then back to P. Leave ur engine running while you pull out the auto-tranny fluid dip-stick. Wipe it clean, dip n pull out again and observe the fluid level on the dip-stick.

I bought KYB front shocks for my RX330 two weeks ago in Abuja for 28,000 Naira. Although, I got a discount because of my relationship with the guy I buy parts from. He had insisted that he should be selling at a much higher price because of the current exchange rate but for relationship, I got it at that. Meanwhile, an auto garage here in Abuja had given me a quote of 40,000 for the same pair of KYB struts.

Beside using 'would as a past tense of 'will', it can be used to express an intention or inclination. For instance, teachers would have us all come to school early. It could also be used to express uncertainty; It would appear that his vehicle is faulty. Also used as a conditional sentence to express choice or possibility. Eg I would come if I had the fare.

'Will' is an auxiliary verb used also to express compulsion; We will drive home. People will talk. It is used to express habit or inclination. Girls will be girls etc.

I would say the lady is not smart. There are so many ways to confirm the genuineness of the message. First, did the alert also show current balance in her account? She should know her balance prior to the transaction. If that is the case, then there's a connivance with the bank staff.

It is also surprising that in this day of internet and mobile banking, she could not verify that the money is intact before parting with the said car. It is also very easy for the fraudster to have utilize bulk sms portal/system to send the sms which will obviously displays as coming from the bank. Even if any of these methods is not used to verify the authenticity of an sms, it makes a lot of sense to go to any nearest branch of the bank with the buyer. I bet you at this point, the buyer will be reluctant to go, which is a red flag for any business transaction. Yet another option would have been to call her account officer to verify. Please, don't tell me the cliché "I do not know my account officer....."

In any case, she's solely responsible for her actions as the bank cannot indemnify her except there's an insiders' information as regards the exact amount in her account at the time the sms came in corresponding to what she has in the bank in addition to the false payment.

Usually when selling a car, the best option is usually to proceed to the bank with the buyer. Payment is confirmed there and then, before documents are transferred. As a matter of fact, it sounds unreal but then, funny things happen daily

Finally found the culprit and solution








Had a learning experience i do like to share here. . . . . .

Car: Lexus ES330
Year: 2005

So over a period of time, i just notice some sort of vibration on my car starting at 60km/hr.
Was quite disturbing since no amount of wheel balancing and alignment solved my problem. I think i even reported the case here.

Went to my mechanic and did a test drive with him. Closer observation showed weak front Stabiliser linkages and suspension bushings. He suggested they could be the cause. I had both parts changed and then a test drive. This somewhat reduced the vibration but did not solve the problem well enough. Still felt tingles at 70 and increased vibration at 80km upwards.

We fixed to meet following day for closer examination. We discovered a binding brake on left front wheel. One of the Caliper pistons was stuck out and the rubber linings also worn, causing a sort of hydraulic leakage. Mind you, there wasn't any hydraulic shortage too. Mechanic also attributed a type of gripping sound i heard on acceleration from a static position to the binding brake, but didn't specifically say it caused the vibration. We looked for the rubber linings but couldn't find any to re-kit the caliper. I also noticed that the brake discs i bought and changed last December were already warped Also, brake pads on the left front wheel totally worn!!

I asked them to couple the legs and let me have my car since they couldn't get the re-kit materials for the caliper. I was already making arrangements to order the part from Lagos when i decided to try out Apo mechanic village (my first time going there since i moved to Abuja). I also gave them all through Thursday to see if they can find a replacement caliper for the car or the rubber kit.

By Friday, with no response from the mechanic guys, i headed to Apo. Got there and took out the offending caliper. No matching part was found, as the most common for the 2005 Camry was single piston caliper, while mine was double piston. I insisted on what i needed. Eventually, some dude came and took the old one and left. Came back 30 minutes later, with my caliper rekitted . I got a new pair of brake pads and reinstalled on the car.

Meanwhile, i went for another round of wheel balancing before the caliper fix. So i kinda noticed an improved driving with no much vibrations. In fact i drove to the airport and back with no issues the saturday after the Friday i did an alignment. So it was hard for me to pick out that the vibrations were completely gone after the caliper service.

Fast forward 3 weeks later, and a trip to Kaduna inbetween, the vibrations paid me another visit
Just returned from an official trip and my car parked for 3 days. I made to move it out for work the next day and i heard this sound like something being let of a strong grip. I paid not much attention to it. Car drove smoothly to work on Thursday. But on Friday, omo, the vibrations came back. I couldn't do much as i left town the following day and returned on Monday morning.

Moved the car out a parked position and heard the same gripping sound again. I decided to pay less attention to it until wknd, and with the benefit of holidays, i would have time for it and to get to the bottom of this nonsense

But on Tuesday, after several rounds and all runs, the car became practically undriveable at any speed beyond 50km/hr. Could see the passenger front seats shaking. None of my two trust mechanics were available. One eventually asked me to return at 2pm since he was engaged. Well, i went to some third guy who works on a number of my colleagues car, who asked to go do an alignment. My insistence it was not an alignment issue was rebuffed. I asked him to refer me to someone and he did. I struck a deal with the alignment guy, if alignment didn't solve the wahala, I won't pay! And he set to work. When he finished, a test drive showed no difference.

I also noticed that at initial start up, when the wheel is relatively cold, the vibration goes away and return with intensity when hot. Well, i managed the car to my mechanic's workshop and somehow, met him. We fixed an appointment for this morning. He couldn't work on it yesterday as he was busy. I just queued and got fuel, sorted a number internet issues I had, used an ATM and was driving home when i just thought of ringing the second mechanic. Lo, he was back and asked me to come. I bought banana and drove to his shop, i anticipation of a long diagnosis and repair and maybe a sleep over (my car) at his workshop.

He test drove the car and was telling me about considering changing my tires but somehow, noticed that my brakes were binding. We could even perceive some brake odour at shot stops. Lo, the right front wheel was binding. When in drive, the car won't even lunge forward. On neutral on a slope, the car is static. The slight gripping sound on braking also noticed. While i noticed these sounds, it never occurred to me they were the cause of the vibrations.

We dismantled the caliper and discovered one of the pistons were stuck out. Took the caliper to Apo and serviced the caliper and reinstalled. Did a test drive and my car was sailing smoothly at 140km/hr. I will have another set of balancing and alignment later today to solve a slight tingle at 120km. Also planning on changing my rotors once more.

So ends my long story

What an experience @emperoh. Sometimes, it could very highly annoying & frustrating when certain problems are difficult to diagnose with exact possible cause. Thank God the nightmare is over.

Hi all,
Please for the car enthusiast and mechanics in the house, i need your input.
I own an Infiniti QX56 vehicle and for a while now i noticed that if i use it for say a straight 1hr or more drive, the temperature just starts rising, also further minutes down the line, all the indicators on the the dashboard will go flat except for the fuel gauge. This flatness last for a few mins before they start working again but sometimes when they come up, i will then realise that the temperature has gone so far up.
Now i have taken it to my mechanic and the electrician, they have checked everything, the fan is perfect, they even changed the cover of the radiator and touched the fuses etc but they cant find out the reason for such overheating most especially.
Infact because of this i have restricted the use of the vehicle for only short distance journey like church etc, even at that, i pray there will be no traffic, cos thats when the temperature will like to feel like it will embarrass me.
Please what can possibly be wrong?

Car ownership is not a luxury but a necessity. Apart from daily commute from and to work, emergencies situations do require you have one. I can infer from your post that you are single. During a heavy rain fall, it becomes very difficult to go to work or leave your office.

Most often, you are at the mercy of other drivers (taxis & friends) to determine when you leave a particular place. A car also offers you a great measure of comfort. You decide what time you leave.

By the time you are married & kids start coming, it's a different experience. If you live in Europe where transportation system is well organized, then, it may not matter.

Apparently, you are not yet ready for car ownership. You want someone else to advise you on what vehicle to buy...Very unfortunate.

I have followed a similar argument/debate else where. It rages like burning fire. I think vehicles are targeted at different audience and markets. People buy cars for different purposes. For the enthusiasts; performance, handling & thrill are the primary aim. Anything less is unacceptable. Usually, individuals under this category have the financial strength to keep such vehicles for as long as they want. These group can afford the services of any competent automobile garage. Sometimes, they are the technicians themselves. Siena falls into this category. His advise or views is strictly from a professional perspective. There are not too many technical knowhow in this area in this part of the world. Those available are pricey. Most times, these vehicles are not used as a lone car. Most users here are elite who understand what a car manual means.

For the average, who basically commute from point A to B, they are concerned about cost of maintenance, parts availability, mechanics etc. Here, the concern is about durability, efficiency and economical & are mostly used as the only car by the owner, surviving daily heavy traffic, rough terrain, flood, bad roads and abuse with all manner of wrong ATF and engine oil. At this level, ignorance is predominant and if you like, bandwagon effect takes precedence. There are some elite here who desire performance and go for V6 & V8 just to avoid the stress associated with the German brands.

The onus is on the individual to identify where he belongs and follow accordingly. Someone made a good observation earlier, when you are stock in a certain village where you can hardly get a competent hand to diagnose a fault; what would you do if your vehicle is such that they are even afraid to come near?

Personally, I will do German cars as part of a fleet. All the people I know that use German vehicles have other Japmobiles as their routine vehicles.

Guy do you know that most people don't know that the RX330 and 350 have FWD and AWD model? Most just assume that all of them are AWD or more commonly called "JEEP" hence the all have "auxiliary".

It's very simple to identify AWD and FWD in the RX330/350. If the forth letter on your vin number is 'H' then you have an AWD but if it's a 'G' it is a FWD.

For reliability & ruggedness, I would not go for Honda Odyssey. My best bet will be outside the listed options; a Toyota Picnic with three rows of two seats. It looks smaller but has a relatively good head and leg rooms. The rear seats are removable, providing a good cargo space. It handles well and has good fuel economy with an average of 31 mpg.

Parts are readily available, cheap and so do mechanics. Since cost is a major concern, both in maintenance and fuelling, you will not go wrong. It comes in manual & auto trannies.

The Mazda MPV has a 4 cylinder variant but looks bland. We use one as an office vehicle, no rear a/c vents to keep rear passengers cool. It is not rugged & drives sluggishly and equally underpowered. It is as spacious as the Odyssey.

Another good option would have been Toyota Sienna 1998 - 2000 but for the rear window that does wind down, which is a concern to you.

It's usually the case when you are well-off to Carter for the need of others. You do not necessarily have to send money to friends & relatives on a monthly basis except your parents. Even those who reside in Nigeria face similar challenges but a greater expectations await those who live outside the shores of this country.

Have special budget for your immediate family; parents & siblings. But the best approach is to set them up with some initiative that will provide them with monthly income. This requires a relatively huge sum over a period. Let them know you are borrowing to fund that business. Give them a timeline for refund (though you will not take the money from them). This will drastically reduce or eliminate over reliance on you for financial needs.

For distance relations and friends, help when it's absolutely imperative. I have an incline you have flamboyant Facebook page that keeps attracting your old friends. You must not be on fb much less chat every time. You must also learn to avoid those who overtly ask for help on a frequent basis. I can assure you that on the flip of the coin, they will not help. But then, the much you can help that will not put a financial strain on you & your family is a good measure of His grace.

I have followed this thread right from the outset. I have read the intrigues, politickings, complications, contrivance and if you you like, the trickery nature of some people here. First, I admire the confidence & sincerity of some some car dealers who boldly condemned inspired autos action albeit the effect of his action to the pre-order business style, while some other prominent car dealers have been neutral & spoke with extreme caution. It leaves an impression that they might even do the worse if they are in inspired autos shoes. That also leaves a bitter taste in the mouth.

That has strongly reinforced my stance that pre-order is not the best approach to vehicle acquisition & ownership. I have owned 8-9 different cars in the last 10 years or so but have never had any problem issue with them. I have also bought these cars car stands or order them myself. This suffice it to say that paying for what you can see is always the way to go. Giving out funds to someone based on what you read online will be overflogging the issue. Some have also justified pre-order as the best route in getting good cars equipped with state of the art technology other than base models; this is a debate for another day.

Again, people are free to express their opinion on issues but in doing that, rationality, wisdom, circumspection and judgement as to their actions should guide them when expressing such views. Such views help us make all manner of conjecture about them & classify, size up and place them in accordance with such opinions.

For the op to have fully paid for a vehicle over 5 months ago yet inspired autos has failed in all aspects of the agreement and still has the moral justification & guts to decline calls and avoid any form of communication with her while holding onto her money & the car shows how bad Nigeria as a nation has degenerated. It's even terribly bottoms-out that some have come in his defence. Big shame.

@naijadeyhia, be mindful of the fact that you are not helping those people that are generating incoherent questions & logic of your assistance to the op aimed at recovering her money. Personally, I don't respond to every jibe thrown at me provided I'm on the right course. But then and again, different strokes for different folks. You rightly pointed out that one of them is below 20 years of age yet you have gone ahead to respond to his jibes. I think you should be a lot more mature than that. You were not forced to render help; it came from a wilful desire to assist & ensure justice. I also believe that those who want help will do so offline.
