vali1000:Both cars cannot necessarily be compared; Corolla is a compact car while Toyota Camry is a family size sedan. Camry has three engine variants; 2.4, 2.5 and 3.5l V6 whereas the Corolla has 1.6. 1.8 & 2.0l engine. So you know, fuel consumption certainly can't be the same as well as cost of spare parts. If you 've got a family, the Camry will be ideal. But comparatively, both cars are relatively cost effective to run. |

I do Owerri to Abuja regularly but I go through Owerri to Onitsha - Onicha Ugbo - Uromi to Ewu junction to Okene to Lokoja and then Abuja. I spend less hours via this route because the roads are relatively ok. However, I have peeps who do the Enugu route but each time we take off together, I usually get to Abuja before them. They also complain that the Enugu route is lonely. The Ajeokuta stretch of the route is very bad so you need to be careful there. Safe trip. |
aieromon:Custom Officials stop all vehicles they assume have just been cleared irrespective of the age of the vehicle. @autojoshng that's part of the major challenge. Why would an agent choose to under pay for a vehicle for which the owner has paid him in order to ensure full duty payment? NCS holds car owners responsible for any compromise arising from duty payment when indeed, it should be the other way. As a punitive measure, NCS should implement a policy of license withdrawal from such erring agents to serve as a caution to other intending offenders rather than punish an innocent car owner who desires an honest service. In addition, such agents should be made to face the full wrath of the law. This measure will drastically reduce fraud if not outright elimination of such. |
sultaan:Thanks @Sultaan. They do not want to respond. Typical Nigerian way of life. Once people observe that you want to pay for a service by yourself without going through them, every effort will be made to frustrate it. |
Waiting for your responses. |
I seek information concerning purchasing a car from Cotonou and paying the required duty by myself. Is it possible for me to purchase a car & pay for the duty of the said car without going through a middleman/agent. This becomes necessary as most dealers are unscrupulous and would not pay the required duty for a car & choose other dubious means to bring the vehicle to Nigeria in order to make outrageous profit from the transaction. Don't get me wrong, there are some sincere & genuine dealers but they are difficult to come by. Recently on Nairaland, we read stories of pre-Order deals going sour and none payment of duties by some conscienceless dealers. I have seen folks who paid some agents to deliver cars on their behalf from Cotonou but ended up regretting such decisions. Given the above scenario, can I obtain valuation from the customs office & proceed to the bank for onward payment & in return obtain all necessary genuine documents regarding the particular vehicle from the Nigerian Customs Service. I also plan to drive the vehicle by myself to Lagos & consequently, to my destination. As part of the plan, I will to set out two weeks of my time for this purpose. This thread aims to elicit contributions from devout & trustworthy dealers and Nairalanders who have gone this route so we can learn from them. In your response, kindly answer the following questions: 1. What are the stages of buying a car in Cotonou? 2. What are the challenges & issues to be encountered? 3. How would they be mitigated? 4. After payment of duty where can it be verified to ensure that all payments are valid? Thank you so very immensely for your anticipated response. |
Truth be told; most of the technicians claiming to understand & fix hybrid cars in Nigeria do that by trial & error. Owners of such hybrid cars spend more money than they anticipated searching for solution. Majority of spare parts dealers don't stock hybrid spare parts. To source for their parts in Nigeria, you have to expend an enormous amount of energy to get them. Not everyone has the capacity to import spare parts. To import the parts implies that you must have other cars to use while waiting for the parts to arrive. When the parts eventually arrive, the machanic who will fix the parts will charge a leg & an arm because it's a specialised vehicle. In the event that the inverter systems requires an overhaul, the gains in fuel will be eroded completely. Are hybrid cars good? Yes but currently, the system in Nigeria does not support their use. I could own one as part of a fleet but not as a lone car. A few owners may have been lucky to use theirs for a few years with no hitch but once the system starts to fail, they will tell a horrifying stories of hybrid ownership. Again, nobody has discouraged anybody from the ownership of a hybrid but you need to weigh your options against the realities of ownership of regular cars in terms of spare parts availability, technical know-how etc. Fuel consumption is not the only yardstick when purchasing a car. |
saintjoel:How do you identify a genuine clearing agent at the border or anywhere? Especially, where everyone of them claims to do the right thing. Please share; it will help a lot of folks. Thanks. |
Readonee35L:I hope those of us using IOS will get the opportunity of winning too. |
This plot is not for sale, beware of swindlers. |
Siena:Sure, I didn't miss it. If your use of average underscores 'ordinary' then that's fine. Meanwhile, the indiscriminate issuance of license to just anyone without recourse to the persons actual ability to drive & understand rules thereof is a major challenge facing road users in this part of the world. The man tested by @montyng is just one of those who obtained DL with no driving knowledge. The test ought to have ended with the first overt mistake. |
Siena:@Siena the above generalization is faulty. In as much as I agree there are poor drivers in Nigeria, many are still very good drivers. The person he tested is not a driver but an impending accident waiting to happen. His possession of a DL just exposed the porous nature of obtaining a driver's license in Nigeria & the leadership inept inherent in our system. Those errors he pointed out as made by the driver are too obvious to be made by a driver. The issue of nervousness should not arise. I don't know how @montyng found him & decided to test him as a driver. In Nigeria, people who have no idea what a steering wheel is have drivers' license. This is part of the corruption that will be eliminated when we have the right & good leadership in strategic positions. This also suffice it to say that there are numerous ways to find a driver not by possession of a driver's license. There are good drivers in Nigeria. Moreover, poor drivers exist everywhere in the world including Nigeria. |
funso77:I doubt any business person who genuinely gets his money will give you a vehicle based on your terms. To get a mini bus for hirer purchase, you must make some deposits, pay up the balance within a short period so that such owner can maximise profit. Also, your tone on this thread does not portray you as genuinely seeking for help but looking for someone to prey on. I don't think you will meet the conditions for hirer purchase. Just my thought based on your responses. |
Poseidon000:You are wrong with the above assertion. The best option is hirer purchase. @Baram if you are interested in higher purchase, get in touch with me but mind you, you must meet the conditions for hirer purchase before I can give u a car. I use Golf 3 for this business. You can also reach me on bravolad@yahoo.com Cheers. |
I can drive as much as required to get to my destination. Countless times, I have driven from Abuja to Lagos & back as well as Abuja to PH & vice Vera, Abuja to the east etc. Personally, driving is fun. |
NnamdiChidi:I find the above response harsh & insulting. You are a salesman bruh; absolutely unwarranted. Simply stating it's your sales strategy would have pitched you as a good salesman. He may have been interested in purchasing the vehicle but your reaction will put him off & some other interested buyers on this forum. You are also wrong with that response. Adding price value to your cars informs your potential buyers whether to proceed with calls especially if the price is within their budget. Intending buyers don't have to call you to know the price of a car. It's a waste of time & money to call only to realise it's beyond their budget. Additionally, revealing your price presents you as a transparent seller. Obviously, you have poor sales skills, impatient and a tad pompous. |
There should be no sympathy for scumbags in whatever guise. My experience was sometime in 2006. I had lived with a cousin of mine for a couple of months shortly after my NYSC. I got an apartment in Aguda & told my Manager who was using a Nissan Quest to allow me use her vehicle to move some of my things to the new apartment. She accepted & asked me to come to her house the following day to pick the vehicle. By this time, I had only lived in Lagos for a little over 2 months. I got to her house in Ajao Estate at the appointed time, we had a brief discussion & I drove off. Whilst handing her car key to me; she had warned me to guard the key with my life to which we had a laugh. Somewhere around Oshodi/Isolo express way, she called to inform me that she had ₦250,000.00 in the glove compartment. Wow! I screamed. Why didn't you remove it? I queried. Her response was that she forgot. I said ok! No problem. So I became very cautious knowing I cannot make a stop anywhere except at my destination. Of course that revelation made me to ensure that all doors are locked. I got to Mile 2 bridge & there was traffic. So I stayed in the traffic while thinking about the money in the van. All of a sudden, there was a loud sound on the passenger's side of the glass. I looked up & two men pointed a gun at me & asked me to wind down. I immediately glanced at my rear mirror and noticed that another guy was coming towards my side. I thought about the money; the car & the stern warning to make sure the car is safe. Within a split second the traffic moved; I depressed the gas pedal as fast as I could & with all the strength I could muster. The car lunged forward. Goosebumps filled my body, I was sweating as much as I was panting. I was lost for words to explain what happened to my cousin & friends when I got to his house. That incident became an eye opener to me. Constantly, I study my driving environment even when I'm stationary, I use my mirrors & observe things. And of course, I also learned not to switch off my ignition when on an unfamiliar environment. I may not have been able to replace that van then as well as the money. How could I have explained to her that it was taken at gun point? |
juleo:You cannot inspect a car after purchase, it's a weird kind of reasoning. He has offered you an advise & a service (the best you can get) & you still expect him to respond...use your brain lady. |
rectitude:Saying that the advise you get here will determine whether you stay on this forum is rude & lacks respect. I don't think anybody cares if you stay. Edit your post & I can guarantee you will get reasonable responses. Cheers. |
