Car Talk / Re: Toyota Camry 2010 Vs Honda Accord 2010-why Is Toyota More Marketable? by bravolad(m): 6:23am On Mar 14, 2018
adanny01:

There is nothing about the camry that says rugged.

If it were same year of corolla vs civic, i will choose Corolla. But camry vs accord, i will choose accord without blinking twice.

These are some of my issues put in comparison.

Transmission
On this range, the Accord comes on top being more reliable. I have spoken to a lot of mechanics, they complain that the transmission on the camry gives up easily.

Secondly, the camry gear is far more expensive to replace than the Accord.

Engine
I still stick with the Honda being a cheaper engine to replace to the camry. Durability here is not a big issue with both engines.

Fuel economy
Camry is on top on this one, difference to me is not something to shout about

Suspension
This is where most ppl dread Honda but this is where i dread Toyota. The pull out is not an issue to me because i know how to avoid it. Replacing shocks in Toyota is something one cannot avoid. This one also puts a hole in the pocket and happens too frequently with most Toyota. The only up side of camry is thaf it has higher ground clearance.

I will stick with Accord on this category

Aesthetics
I prefer Accord

Driver appeal
Accord

In general, Honda accord is a clear winner in this class.

You seem to miss the point. We are not here looking for a winner but comparing real user experiences. Just to assist you with some real-time research;

1. Make an uber/taxify request, you will find out that 50% of the time, it's a Camry that shows up.

2. I have more than 10 friends who bought Honda Accord for uber & removed them in less than a year due to associated cost of repair & their inability to resale for a reasonable amount after usage.

3. I have so many referrals who bought more Toyota Camry to add to their fleet after about a year in the business.

Transport companies use Toyota for interstate commute; do you think they don't like Honda or can't afford it for the business?

4. My neghbour used a brand new Honda Accord for 5 years had an accident with it & switched to a camry; he clearly prefers the camry in terms of durability, cost of maintenance etc.

After a year or so of usage in Nigeria, camry has a better resale value than the Accord which is the crux of this thread.

Again, to each his own.

Maybe its because of the Honda leg magic.. Just maybe, What do i know? undecided

There's not a straight jacket perspective to this. Across the social media, the argument rages as they are cousins & direct competitors in the auto industry. There areas that each has its unique selling points.

In Nigeria however, a number of factors come to play when you consider either of the options. Usually, maintenance is pivotal to a happy car ownership. Irrespective of your choice of car, if it's properly maintained, the resale value will be high. I have never made a loss after using cars.

Now, the Toyota Camry is more rugged than its Honda Accord counterpart. The reason is not far fetched; camry is generally used for transport both within the city & interstate, which the Honda can't withstand. For example, you can hardly find Honda being used for uber.
Autostar which uses a lot of sedan for their Enugu route has camry, corolla & Avensis.

The good side of this is that the Toyota still commands a good resale value after this usage.

Car Talk / Re: Please Advise Me: Seller Has No Custom Papers by bravolad(m): 6:57am On Mar 12, 2018
tolusan:
Dear Esteemed CarTalkers,
I'm in the process of buying a Nigerian used Toyota Camry 2001. The current user is the second Nigerian user. Its been certified by someone I trust to be in relatively good shape.

Whilst doing my check of the papers, it came to light that the seller did not have Custom papers for the vehicle. Seller says he never got the papers from the first Nigerian owner.

From the proof of ownership of the first owner, it was first registered in Nigeria in 2010. Seller has been using the car for three years and has had no issues with Customs (he says car has rarely left Lagos). Seller claims that there might be some policy/regulation or practice which exempts some cars from compliance with carrying Customs papers. I told him only Innoson cars and Peugeot assembled in Nigeria would be covered by that rule, if at all.

My surprise is as to how the car could even have been registered in the first place without Custom papers.

Please, what is your advice? Is it a deal to follow through with? Is the bolded true?

Your informed comments and suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Usually, after 7 years of usage, NCS would not disturb you about custom duty but it's at their discretion. I'm sure you wouldn't want that.

If the car is to be used locally, u may go ahead to but it but if you travel regularly, just walk away.

This is an issue of syntax now. A yardstick is different from "the yardstick". Mileage is a yardstick but not the only yardstick and that was why I clearly stated that a well maintained car with a higher mileage can be better than a lower mileage car as alot of factors come into play aside mileage.

For your paragraphs 2, you misinterpreted my point. I never said anything regarding the price . The price is very much okay .My colleague bought something of this for 2.3 just last week. I only corrected two things.

1. That a car can be bought in the year different from the manufactured year.

Thus, affecting the mileage. Do you get my drift?

Alright bruh. No problem.

Cheers.

naturalwaves:

There is nothing different from what I said here. We're saying the same thing. It may be rare but I can get. That was what I said except if you now want to say one cannot get.

Based on the remainder of your paragraphs, I clearly stated that mileage is not the sole determinant but a good factor as well. You're just reiterating what I said.

No sir, you are changing the narrative. You said a good mileage is a yardstick for a clean car. Here good mileage implies a low mileage. The question is can you afford a low mileage car of this model?

You left us with an impression that this car is very expensive considering its mileage.
Autos / Re: SOLD....Tin-can Cleared 2005 Toyota Camry XLE by bravolad(m): 4:47pm On Mar 09, 2018
naturalwaves:

Your argument is flawed and does not follow. Good mileage is a good yardstick for car selling. The fact that a vehicle is a 2009 model or 2005 model does not mean that it was bought that year. If I want a brand new Toyota Camry 2011 SE, I can still get it in 2018. Even if I want to buy it now as Tokunbo, I will look for one with a very good mileage. The one whose first owner most likely bought it in 2013/ 2014 or thereabout. I am personally turned off once I see anything around 100,000 talkless of 133,000 or 190k+. When sourcing for cars too, make a low unedited mileage your priority in order to get a better pricing. This does not necessarily imply that a car with a lower mileage will outperform a higher one because the manner of use and servicing plays an important role too. Hope you get my drift?

Your analysis and assumptions are wrong. It's very rare to get a brand new 2011 car in 2018. Even if you get, the price will almost outweigh the benefit as u could get a newer model with less than 8k miles for less amount.

This same car with a less than 100k mileage will cost much higher than most people can afford. You also need to know that mileage is not the only yardstick of measurement for a clean car.

People like you don't deserve the truth and most often fall into the wrong hands. I truly don't understand why Nigerians are difficult to please. No wonder most sincere people rarely go far in business. This is also why some dealers tamer with the mileage & sell quicker to unsuspecting buyers.

Car Talk / Re: Cars45, Do They Actually Buy Your Car In 45 Minutes? – By Autojosh by bravolad(m): 2:14pm On Mar 02, 2018
AutoJoshNG:

I have been getting a couple of phone calls from people who ask about the authenticity of Cars45. They ask questions like: Will they pay me? Will my car be safe? Will they buy at a good price? Are they genuine? A man from Ibadan even asked if they would not elope with his car.

So I decided to write this review about Cars45 for those who would like to know a little about the Company.

Cars45 was founded in 2016 by Etop Ikpe (Former commercial director of Konga and former CEO of DealDey) with Iyamu Mohammed, Sujay Tyle and Peter Lindholm as co-founders. The company was established to help Nigerian car users reduce difficulties of selling their used cars and they have been doing a good job at that. They even got a N1.8 billion ($5million) funding last year.. so they probably won’t run away with your N2million car.

Their head office is located at Agidingbi, Lagos with 23 branches in Lagos, 5 in Abuja and 1 office in Port Harcourt. They are obviously the foremost car selling and auctioning platform for Nigerian used cars.

At the moment, Cars45 is the most reliable and quickest way to sell your Nigerian used car. Some of the advantages they offer are:

1) You don’t have to park your car on the road side with a “For Sale” Jerrycan on it for 3 months, all in the name of “I want to sell my car”

2) Car sellers are usually scared that prospective buyers can driver away in their car or even plant a tracking device and come steal the car in the middle of the night.

3) You get your entire sales proceed as soon as all the vehicle documents are verified. There is no “please let me pay 70% now and pay the balance next month”.

4) No buyer will come wage war against you that they shouldn’t have bought your car in the first place because they are now having problems with it. Cars45 would have done a thorough check before buying your car.

5) The company links you and your car with several buyers (mostly car dealers) through their car auction platform.. just like Copart and IAAI car auctions in USA.

Despite the company’s robust profile as well as the benefits they offer, the most valid question that runs through the mind of an average car seller is, will they buy my car at a good price? Well, the answer to the question is determined by many variables, which may be revealed during the inspection process. These include:

1) The car has been involved in a major accident in the past. Sadly, many cars on Nigerian roads fall in this category as they were imported as salvaged cars from USA auctions.

2) Incomplete documentation especially if the car does not have genuine import duty papers.

3) Poor maintenance.

4) Some high-end cars with low demand might be grossly undervalued. Note that the price they will pay for your car is largely determined by forces of demand and supply.

5) Don’t even think of selling your unregistered tokunbo car through them. It’s not Berger car market so you’ll hardly get a good price.

After selling some cars through Cars45 and sampling the opinion of some of their clients, it was easy to conclude that their prices are moderate and fair. Note, their prices are usually not meant for people who want to cash in big time when selling their cars. For example, I sold a 3-year-old 2012 Toyota Camry through Car45 in December 2017. I was compelled to patronize the company because I wasn’t getting any good offer after putting the car on the market for a month. I had posted the car advert on 4 different car sale websites, I also pasted a “For Sale” sticker on it and even parked it at a friend’s car lot in Victoria Island but no serious leads came forth. I was willing to sell for N3.2m but no buyer. I got on Cars45’s website, checked the car's proposed valuation, booked an appointment and dashed to their office to inspect the vehicle. Sadly, the inspection and processing took longer than the advertised 45 minutes, but I was pacified with a N3million offer after my 2 hours ordeal. A reasonable price to pay to end my month long search for a buyer.

In conclusion, Car45 will buy your car at a moderate and fair price, which will not make you an instant millionaire as most of us would have wanted. They also buy or help you sell your car within the fastest time in Nigeria but is it actually in 45 minutes as they’ve always advertised? I doubt because the 1 or 2 vehicle inspectors at their branches can easily get overwhelmed causing delay and the branch office also have slow internet to contend with as bulk of their processes are transmitted online to and from their head office.

Tell us your experience with Cars45 in the comment section.

I don't want to say that you are paid for a damage control campaign for car45 after the current wave of complaints by those who have patronised them.

You may also need to be told that they buy your cars at a very low price & sell off at huge profit. Only a desperate seller would actually sell to them.

Where does it happen that those who test drive cars run away with them? Do you just allow a stranger to drive your car alone because they indicated interest in buying?

I'm still trying to wrap my head around the essence of your post. Honesty remains the proper ingredient to a successful business name.

Gurus,
I need advice. I changed the engine oil of my Toyota Camry three months ago. I hardly drive the car for long distances. My ODO meter reads 980 . But I noticed that the oil level has dropped close to the minimum level mark. Is it safe for me to top up the oil with a fresh one? Or must I change the entire oil and filter.

It's very safe. That engine is known for excessive oil consumption, just ensure the engine is cold before topping, preferably first thing in the morning.

The reason we wanted a more recent model is that drivers get better rating and (ithink) charge more for e-taxi
2- saleablity

This is not true as the drivers you asked wanted a status symbol rather than a good car for business.

A 2003 - 2007 corolla would have been perfect for the business. These models equally get excellent ratings provided the driver is neat & keeps the car clean. Actually, it's the service that gives u the rating rather than the car. However, irrespective of the car & how effecient the service was, some riders will still rate low.

I agree op. But it not like we were novice at least dh is not, having bought and used other cars. But this people work on your psychic, for one the place is not well lit, and they say they dont test drive. One customer that went with his mechanic ended up with a much worse car.
Let us learn from this, deception is legal in this country and our judicial system and regulatory body turns a blind eye

I disagree with you on this. I can't buy a used car without the opportunity of a test drive, even if it's from Elizade. And considering that truth is turned upside down, once you deny me an opportunity to test drive, I walk away. No arguments.

However, your perception of the judicial system is also wrong. You have got evidence to support your claim. Some law firms will take the case for free & perhaps, share profit if the case goes in your favour. I think you should seek justice if your narrative is anything to go by.

When buying a used car in Nigeria, a test drive is a mandatory requirement.

Car Talk / Re: Which Is Better: 2003 Lexus Es300 Or 2003 Toyota Avalon Xls by bravolad(m): 5:09pm On Feb 27, 2018
Flexicution:
Hi Everyone,
I'm thinking of getting a car (tokumbo) and right now, I'm considering the two cars mentioned above and I humbly need your opinion on which is better. My consideration is based on the following:
-Durability
-Maintenance affordability
-Good features like any luxury features
-Fuel economy and;
-General Appeal.

Your opinions/contributions will be highly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

The ES300 is a luxury brand by lexus and targeted at a certain class of users. It has a luxury feel better than the Avalon in terms of the interior design.

Both cars will be at par in relation to maintenance and fuel consumption as they share the same 3.0l engine. They also durable. Parts are available for both as there mechanics.

The ES300 has a better appeal exteriorlly & better resale value. The Avalon has a roomy interior, bulky and will consume a little more fuel than the ES300 because of its curb weight. The Avalon looks like a granny car while the ES300 makes a lot more sense for a young person.

Personally, I will take the ES300 over the Avalon.

Although u didn't state whether your preference is the diesel or petrol powered x6 u intend to purchase. I see nothing wrong with the vehicle except the poor quality of diesel here in Nigeria will most likely affect its usage if you are buying the diesel version.

We also have poor quality fuel which is a major challenge for most modern cars in Nigeria. Any of the x6 models comes with a turbo charged inline 6 with solid handling. There's also the 4.4l v8 with 445hp that could trump your adrenaline.

The only negatives I see is the poor rear visibility occasioned by the shape & size of the side mirrors & the tiny cargo hold if you have got a family. Bear in mind that spare parts won't come cheap & maintenance will be a premium.

Venza just an elevated camry. The x6 can easily anihilate any of the RX models.

My highlander 2004 with 3.3 engine and 10 pin gearbox is sluggish in movement when engaged in reserve gear only when engine has run for about 30 minutes or less. When the car is parked for a long time the reserve gear works perfectly. The drive gears are working perfectly, the gearbox filter was just replaced with a new one , Toyota transmission oil was used in the replacement of the gearbox oil, the engine was running when the oil was gauged and scan didn't see any fault. I also notice that the engine compartment is very hot when the bonnet was opened, despite the fact that the engine is not overheating, both fans are shucking in fresh air and temperature is normal. Please, what should l do? I am at Igando, Lagos.

I believe your engine is the 3.3l 3MZ FE which uses the 22pin gear box. Check to be sure your gear box is not converted.

You need a competent mechanic to carry out this check.

Good luck with your decision.

Jeep's current product range consists solely of sport utility vehicles and off-road vehicles, but has also included pickup trucks in the past. Jeep sold 1.4 million SUVs globally in 2016, up from 500,000 in 2008,[4][5] two-thirds of which in North America,[6] and was Fiat-Chrysler's best selling brand in the U.S. during the first half of 2017.[7] In the U.S. alone, over 2400 dealerships hold franchise rights to sell Jeep-branded vehicles, and if Jeep were spun off into a separate company, it is estimated to be worth between $22 and $33.5 billion — slightly more than all of FCA (US).[6][5]

Prior to 1940 the term "jeep" had been used as U.S. Army slang for new recruits or vehicles,[8][9] but the World War II "jeep" that went into production in 1941 specifically tied the name to this light military 4x4, arguably making them the oldest four-wheel drive mass-production vehicles now known as SUVs.[10] The Jeep became the primary light 4-wheel-drive vehicle of the United States Army and the Allies during World War II, as well as the postwar period. The term became common worldwide in the wake of the war. Doug Stewart noted:[11] "The spartan, cramped, and unstintingly functional jeep became the ubiquitous World War II four-wheeled personification of Yankee ingenuity and cocky, can-do determination."

The Jeep marque has been headquartered in Toledo, Ohio, ever since Willys-Overland launched production of the first CJ or Civilian Jeep branded models there in 1945.[12] Its replacement, the conceptually consistent Jeep Wrangler series, remains in production since 1986. With its solid axles and open top, the Wrangler has been called the Jeep model that is as central to the brand’s identity as the rear-engined 911 is to Porsche.[13]

At least two Jeep models (the CJ-5 and the SJ Wagoneer) enjoyed extraordinary three-decade production runs of a single body generation. Jeeps have since the war inspired a number of other light utility vehicles, such as the Land Rover.[14][15] Many Jeep variants serving similar military and civilian roles have since been designed in other nations.
In lowercase the term "jeep" continues to be used as a generic term for vehicles inspired by the Jeep that are suitable for use on rough terrain.[16]

I believe this notion can be corrected and our mentality changed from always refering all other auto brands SUV or CUV Jeeps. cool my one kobo

It will be a hard nut to crack on the Nigerian roads riddled with portholes, speed bumps, indisciplined drivers who can’t maintain a lane & those who stay on the speed lane and defy all warnings to leave the lane for a speeding car behind, poorly designed roads, careless pedestrians etc.

We could clearly see the police car overtake the suv to clear road upfront after the driver called 911. Is this achievable in Nigeria? Certainly no. But until such a time when we elect & appoint people in strategic positions based on merit & not on ethno-religious & political affiliations.

However, it would be vital to commit all the points to memory should this happens to anyone.

Car Talk / Re: Hire-purchase Vehicle Needed For Uber/taxify by bravolad(m): 4:14pm On Feb 17, 2018
Andalucia:

First off, thanks for taking time to go through my post and subsequently posting a reply.

Relative to your question, I have been opportune to operate this business for over four years prior to the advent of Uber and Taxify but as the vehicle owner rather than driver (this affords me much experience on how the business works sans the "e" aspect of it which in my opinion only makes the business easier to run). The "E" aspect of the business is just introducing technology to how a model has been run for ages thus tweaking how it works for the better at a consideration (the commission the technology firm gets). While each venture has it's challenges and peculiarities, I daresay this is one venture that is not rocket science.

Again, I have friends (and a next door neighbour who has been a partner with Uber and also Taxify since their inception hence seen it all, the good and the bad. In fact, I convinced him to provide vehicles for the business even though I couldn't take advantage of the platform given the nature of my job back then) and acquaintances who operate on both ends of the spectrum (drivers and owners) relative to the business. You could say my theoretical knowledge of how this business works is formidable. Before saying such theoretical knowledge may not be practical, bear in mind that the mentioned theoretical knowledge is a function of the practical experience of players in the game; consummate players still in the field of play as at yesterday!

Furthermore, a thorough research into the business will afford the dedicated individual pertinent information needed to thrive in the business. This is a business whose success is largely anchored on having the requisite knowledge relative to peak movement periods, perfect locations, alternative routes to intended destination and above all top-notch customer care (repeat business can do much to boost earnings). This is of course taking for granted the availability of a very sound vehicle as without this every other effort comes to nought.

Let me end by saying that with respect to my part, any intending principal has nothing to fear as he/she will discover. Hoping I answered your query Sir.

Apparently, you don't have a firsthand experience in this industry. If I were you, I will be strictly be interested in using a Toyota Corolla for ruggedness, reliability, good mpg & ease of maintenance.

Car Talk / Re: Hire-purchase Vehicle Needed For Uber/taxify by bravolad(m): 3:55pm On Feb 17, 2018
It's not usually as straightforward in practice as it looks. From your presentation, you are willing to pay between 40k & 50k weekly which translates to 4,160,000 & 5,200,000 respectively for 2 years.

I assume that the car will be used in Lagos. As interesting as your presentation seems, this will be difficult to achieve either on either uber & taxify combined, especially giving the current rates for both e-hailing apps coupled with the economic realities. To constantly remit 40 - 50k weekly on current uber/taxify is almost impossible.

Realistically, 30k weekly payment should be ideal going into this business. I have had cars on uber & pulled them out of the system. In Abuja for instance, requests on both uber & taxify have drastically reduced.

Going by your proposal of 40 - 50k weekly remittance, how would you handle repairs along side your needs? It's easy to conclude on how the weekly payment could be achieved but a different kettle of fish to achieve same.

Within the first year of usage, the car will degrade & loose shape requiring more frequent repairs. This is when the problem will start. How do you hope to handle this?

Given the state of car you listed for the business, it will cost more to acquire especially a truly low mileage one. This will further push the final price higher. If I invest 2.4M for instance; I will peg the price at about 4.9M giving that repayment is over 24 months. How would you also factor in depreciation value?

I can understand why you accepted the accommodation but don't regret. I believe you are still in your formative years as an employee. While living in the apartment ensure you have good savings. After sometime, get another apartment and move out of the house. Apply for other jobs, when you do get a good and better offer, resign & move on but don't burn the bridges.

Lastly, don't threaten to resign when u have no offer insight as she may accept it & that creates a huge problem for you.

A bird in hand is worth 2 in the bush.

Car Talk / Re: Difference Between A SK16HR11 And SK20HR11 Denso Iridium Spark Plug by bravolad(m): 9:23pm On Feb 02, 2018
Olidawg247:
Hi Nairalanders,
I drive a Camry 2010 SE trim and I am looking at replacing my spark plugs.

So my Mecho bought a SK20HR11 against the SK16HR11 recommended in the owner's manual.

Can someone enlighten me about the implication of the difference in the ratings, detailing what each alphabets or group of alphabets in the ratings really mean?

Thank you!!!

Your engine is 2AR-FE 4cylinder engine. The recommended plug is SK16HR11. The SK20HR11 is for 6 cylinder. I will advise you return it fast & look for the recommended spark plug for your car. If you install the SK20HR11, you will have a lot of misfire issues & car will run lean, which will increase fuel consumption.

It's apparent ur roady does know the difference.
Car Talk / Re: Advise On Buying A Nigerian Used Infiniti G35 (2004) by bravolad(m): 8:50pm On Jan 15, 2018

Good day good people of Nairaland. I came across an Infinity G35 Nigeria used and have thoughts of buying it. Sellers are less likely to tell one the true faults and common faults of cars they are about to sell so I thought I could get an advice here on issues related to the car INFINITI G35 2004 model.
Contributions are needed. Thanks

Given the propensity for the car to be problematic in Nigeria & the poor maintenance culture of most Nigerian users, I would advise you buy a direct Toks.

Pay particular attention to the fluids including engine & tranny. Fuel quality does affect performance here but kazeems are the greatest killer machines. Don’t buy parts because they are cheap but because they are genuine & represent a better quality for the longevity of the ride.

Good luck with your choice.

I WAS THINKING OF BUYING 328i 2000 MODEL, TOKS OR NIGERIAN USED. ANY ADVICE WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

It's actually rude & unethical to write in capital letters. It also shouts. You may have been writing like this without knowing the implications.

Most respondents may not bother replying your query even when they have the right answers.

Okay, want to buy one of these cars.
2005 Lexus ES330 or 2008/09 Toyota Camry.
Which should I go for? In terms of durability, luxury and maintenance.
Thanks in advance.

I assume the 2009 Camry is a 6 cylinder. The Xle model of the camry is better as it has Bluetooth, mp3, Aux port & better sound system, which the Lexus does not offer.

The Camry offers a better front & rear leg room as well as more cargo space. The Camry will beat the Lexus with its 3.5l 2GR engine compared with the 3.3l 3mz -fe engine in the Lexus.

More so, the Camry is a recent model than the Lexus even though Lexus is a Luxury sedan but the difference in years is very significant.

In terms of easy of maintenance, they are essentially the same.

Someone please help.what could be wrong with my toyota camry 2000.barely one year old tokubo blows hot air when driving even when the ac is not on.i took it to the mechanic.the mechanic cut off the hose that supply heat yet the car is still blowing hot air in the where the accelerating and break padal are.

You probably have the aircon recirculation button turned off therefore allowing air from the outside into the cabin. Also, use the ac mode switch to change the desired mode.

Please how much to clear 2012 c300 and 2010 Venza from cotonou

You can't currently clear any car from the Cotonou/Seme border. Land borders are closed. E very careful so you don't loose your cars to NCS.

Meanwhile, you can contact @Saintjoel for further details.
