Duh!. There is an ongoing customs imbroglio, perhaps as a result of some disagreements between custom units - I think. The wranglings have been on for a week and it is not clear when all issues will be resolved. As a result, the expected arrival date of the HPs is indeterminate. I will update this thread when the dust settles and I have clarity on the expected arrival dates of the HPs. Read the customs story here :- http://www.thisdayonline.com/nview.php?id=91648 "Not less than five foreign airlines including are currently under investigations for airlifting contraband cargoes into Nigeria. A yet-to-be ascertained quantity of contrabands running into millions of naira were early last week intercepted at the Muritala Mohammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, " and here is another one :- http://www.thisdayonline.com/nview.php?id=91441 "Activities at the cargo section of the Murtala Mohammed Interna-tional Airport (MMA), Lagos, has been paralysed and movement of cargo suspended due to disagreement between two groups of Nigeria Customs Service officials who have been fat loggerheads since Tuesday this week." peace, brume |

Per my last comment. I looked at some of the reports and they seemed to be random in nature. As well if you search for overheating problems with other laptop models you will find a lot of reports also. Not that this information is of any particular use in your situation - just wanted to update this thread with what I found. brume |
There is a chance that some acer models (including that specific model) have known overheating problems. I searched the web for "aspire 5000 overheat problem" and found a lot of reports which from a cursory look may indicate that your problem was not an isolated case. I havent had time to look at them in detail though to confirm that. |
Hi Chiegemba, Thanks for taking the time to share your personal experience with your acer laptop. Very enlightening and certainly helpful. Much appreciated. enjoy, brume |
chiegemba:Hi Chiegemba, I have a couple questions regarding your acer problem? What model of acer do you have and how long have you had it for?. Is it the same problem they have tried to fix over and over again in the repair shop or different problems each time? I'm curios as to if there are known problems with that specific model or if this is just an isolated case. Please get back. Thanks. Brume |
Hi all, There are 3 more HPs on the way (Intel Core 2 Duo 2Ghz) - slated to arrive in approx 2 weeks (by Oct 18th). I will update this thread with pricing and configuration details in due course. thanks, brume |
mediawimax, I am by no means an expert on this issue but AFAIK the Nigerian market has tremenduous growth opportunities for any organization with deep pockets that is looking to invest into offering broadband internet (Wimax, EVDO, watchamcallit) and/or mobile wireless phone service nationwide. Since the market was deregulated there are many participants currently operating in this space (or getting ready to jump in). I would imagine that a couple of major challenges you may face are :- 1. Your ability to secure a license to transmit communication signals in your desired frequency - it may be taken already. 2. Cash (The #1 show stopper). You need piles of cash to purchase/deploy all that nice equipment (base stations, etc). This is just my 2 cents based on my limited appreciation of the current market dynamics/underpinnings of the Nigerian telecommunications services landscape- I defer more authoritative comments to others who are more in the know. Where to start?. I don't have a specific answer to that. You may want to contact the Nigerian Communications Commision (www.ncc.gov.ng) forr specfic information on regulations, etc. easy, brume |
aPr, I guess you are confirming that it has an AMD Turion processor and NOT a pentium M processor. Right?. peace, Brume |
Hey, Dont get me wrong here. I am not asking anyone to follow my creed - hook line and sinker. My last post was just my humble opinion. The fact that I say I wont ship a Celeron unless someone asks me to doesnt imply I preclude anyone else from doing just that. There are different strokes for different folks. You are correct though - anyone buying a celeron (or any system for that matter) should know exactly what they are getting and what to expect from it. peace, Brume. |
bimbor:Just curios. Did you get your laptop yet? Brume |
Kobojunkie, Your price doesnt sound bad for a Celeron based system. Can you verify that your total selling price would be 65K + 4,600 ? i.e. 69,600 Naira is the entire price to purchase the system delivered to say a Lagos recipient?. Just curios. From your post it is not clear if there are other costs or not(i.e duties/customs clearing). take care, Brume PS: I wont ship a Celeron though - unless someone asks specifically for it. |
Passworded, I am feeling your budget constraints and definitely understand/appreciate/respect that. What applications do you intend to run on this laptop? You need to at least verify that you can run these apps trouble free before you commit your valuable funds. Since you also have your sights set on a fairly used laptop -- I think you can still be picky about at least the RAM. For the RAM, I absolutely wont go below 512MB of ram unless I am planning to replace the RAM very soon. I say replace because if the current memory (i.e 256MB) fills all memory banks (or DIMMS), you may be unable to add to the existing RAM and need to replace them entirely. You also take a hit on the hard drive if you decide to replace that later. One other thing, before you purchase the used system, it may be prudent to confirm what the total cost of the system will come to after adding the cost of the upgrades. You need to find that out now then do the math to figure out if you will be better of waiting until you can get what you can afford - rather than buying something that would need to be upgraded later at a significantly higher cost. On many occasions (where a motherboard replacement was involved) I have found it cheaper to simply replace my system with a new one than to upgrade the existing one (total upgrade cost was too close to replacement cost). That has been my experience for what thats worth. Anyhow, nuff said. easy, Brume |
aPr, Theres something out of whack in your post. Does this Vostro really have AMD Turion AND Pentium M? Yeah post a pix of that here we really need to see it-- just kidding ![]() I'm sure you had a fat finger moment or its a simple cut an paste with incomplete edit case. Anyhow please correct it since it is somewhat ambiguous now. peace, Brume |
Hey Passworded, Whats with the big secret in your ID .The system you intend to purchase will sooner begin to thrash wildly in hunger for system resources. This of course is just my humble opinion. If I were you I wont go with less than 1GB Ram and 80GB harddrive. peace, Brume |
Dear Kempest, Thanks for your very kind words - much appreciated. I am glad you made good on your decision to purchase this specific laptop and I hope you continue to enjoy your new "baby" .Needless to say, it has been my great pleasure knowing you and doing business with you. regards, brume |
Important Update The second HP was sold yesterday. Thanks to all for your enquiries, as soon as I have other items available I would surely notify you all once again thanks. Brume |
Hi Kenmentor, I'm stuck waiting for a call. Thought I would throw out a bit of friendly comments on your post while I wait:- 1. Would be good if you could elaborate with specificity what technical, marketing and consulting services you are offering i.e. mechanical technical, electrical technical, etc., etc. 2. what exactly does good contract work mean?. This sounds rather vague. Again a little bit of detail would help. If you also include some information on your current experience, then it is easier for people to picture you carrying out similar jobs in future. just my 2 cents, brume |
lynxnoon, Great. glad to be able to help. peace brume |
Hi Neroflick, The second laptop is in Lagos and is still available. I can arrange to have it sent to my brother in PH if you want it. Please let me know. If you wish I can offer you a quote for another one since you stated you wanted 2 of them. peace, brume |
Aloha Kempest, Got your emails. I'll surely holler back when I finally awake. going back to bed. brume |
Hey lynxnoon, I dey kampe. Just hanging in. Ok. I know Direct On PC offers broadband wireless service (WIMAX?) in Nigeria. So it figures that your wireless modem connects you to DOPC. Since you are able to connect your laptop to the ethernet port on your wireless modem and obtain internet service that tells me :- 1. Your laptop is likely correctly configured to receive network config information (DHCP IP address, default gateway, etc) from the wireless modem lan port. 2. DOPC is correctly providing this information through your wireless modem and will also provide it when you connect your linksys router to that port. Perhaps the first thing that you need to establish is that you have physical connectivity when you connect your linksys router to your wireless modem lan port. If the link light is green at both ends of the connection, then you have physical connectivity and likely you have a router configuration issue. If there is no physical connectivity, then you may have a cable problem. There is also a slight chance that you actually need to use a crossover cable (and not a straight cable ) to connect the linksys router to the wireless modem. But I will not worry about that yet. With the limited information you have provided, I can only suggest the following additional steps :- 1. Check that the WAN port on the linksys router is configured to obtain DHCP information from the wireless modem. And verify that it at least receives the same IP address (well this IP address may change slightly if you power off the modem long enough) you obtained earlier when you connected your laptop directly to the ethernet interface on the wireless modem. 2. Check that the linksys router is properly configured on the LAN side to provide network config information (i.e. DHCP like before) this time on the LAN side to the laptops you will be connecting. The router should be configured to dynamically provide a range of IP addresses to your laptops. 3. Check that there is physical connectivity (green LEDs) between the laptop ethernet port and the linksys router ethernet port. 4. Check if the laptop receives an IP address in the range you configured on your router for the LAN segment. Try out these steps first and get back when you determine which of these steps failed. I am sure someone else who is perhaps more familiar with your type of set up would also willing help. I may have missed something out. Hopefully someone else reading this will chip in. all the best, brume |
lynxnoon, I am glad to share my knowledge (and perhaps ignorance in this case) ![]() What exactly are you trying to do? If you simply want to connect your laptops to your linksys wireless router then you should be doing that using the laptops wireless Lan interface by which you can connect over the air. Now if you are hooked up to the Big Bad Internet on the Wan side using a wireless modem I can understand that. i.e. You might have :- 1. A wireless modem connection to the internet that hooks you up to your internet service provider. 2. The wireless modem also provides you an interface on the LAN side to connect your LAN router. 3. The Lan router itself provides you a wireless segment by which you can connect your laptops via their wireless Lan interfaces. i.e. Internet <-->Wireless Modem<-->Lan Router<-->Laptops. If you provide a detailed description of your network configuration and the symptoms you are facing, it would be easier to troubleshoot problems you have encountered. peace, brume |
