I have a dv2500t but it is intel core 2 duo, 2 ghz with web cam and blue tooth and it is priced outside your range (=N=148,000). IMHO it may be hard to get a dual core dv2500t priced at less than 125k. But thats just my humble opinion. I may well be wrong. As alluded to by the earlier poster only YOU can tell which is better for you. Both are very exciting and it is in fact possible and very profitable to intertwine both i.e. develop networking software which requires knowledge of both software engineering and network architecture.

IMHO you need to have a bit of an appreciation for what each entails and try to see if you have required qualities that endear you to nuture and develop a sustained level of interest in your choice(in summary a passion for your choice). Both require the following (basic) among other qualities:-

- innovation
- creativity
- vrey strong commitment to continuous learning/education due to the rapid change/evolution in the underlying technology.
- determination and perseverance
- inborn logical problem solving ability

Prior to taking a decision, it may be in your best interests to discuss with several current practising Network Engineers and Software engineers to garner relevant information about their opinions/experience in practise. e.g.

How does their actual experience (i.e challenges faced and opportunites afforded) align with the dreams and aspirations they had at the start of their careers.? etc.

One other thing, if you have already limited your career choices to either of the 2 and are inwardly convinced that you will definitely proceed with one of them, it may be possible to defer your branch-off/specialization decision by at least one year. i.e. go for Computer science in your first year(same courses are taken in 1st year), take that time to get more of an appreciation (from senior students, lecturers etc) for both and then select your specialization in the 2nd year. Some schools operate in that manner. You need to find out from the schools you are considering if this is possible.

I wont be quick to conclude that most laptops in use in naija are outdated. sure - like in every other country there are some not too recent models in use - perhaps some are museum ready (certainly not all). As you can imagine there are also a quite a few power users in Nigeria with stacked and heavily loaded configs of recent models.

To get an idea of the current configs people are working with, it may be worth your while to search for "laptop" in this forum and see posted configs. Then perhaps you can ask specific questions around the posted configs.

Anyhow to ask anyone to update you on the current sophisticated configs in naija may be a tall order due to the open ended nature of your request. Just my 2 cents.

Well the laptops have been in the US since thursday waiting for the customs problems in MMA airport Lagos to clear before being shipped out (lest they get stuck as well). Anyhow I will update this thread either when the laptops arrive or they are almost there.

Duh.

Anyone can say whatever they want about the Celeron or about the Pentiums. i.e. the Celeron is better than the pentium or vice versa, blah, yada, etc - but I think the price says it all.

The fact (not fiction per your unsubstantiated innuendo) is the Celerons are (and have always been) traditionally cheaper than the Pentiums for some very good reasons(i.e less Cache, poor power mangement, shorter battery life span, limited overclocking ability, etc). The impact of these performance affecting limitations are significant enough for me (personally) to consider buying a pentium over a celeron as an entry level system (especially on a laptop in use in Nigeria where you most likely will often appreciate longer battery life). Bottom line is you get what you pay for. If you pay for a pentium you get the value inherent in a pentium. Likewise the celeron - you get what you pay for - no loss no gain.

Intel came up with the Celeron M in an attempt to dump the bad rapsheet associated with the Celeron processor series. Still I am not impressed enough to buy a celeron based system for myself; let alone recommend it to someone else. That is why I said at the onset unless it is specifically requested, I(personally) wont speculatively buy a celeron to sell it.

For those that can barely afford a Celeron based system - buying one purely on budgetary concerns is certainly understandable.

If you are airfreighting stuff to Nigeria thru MM airport lagos you may want to proceed with caution before initiating any new imports. There is an ongoing clampdown at the Customs Warehouse that may result in your goods getting stuck, damaged or lost. Mine are stuck right now.

It is possible that this issue is resolved soon but it may be wise to wait for the coast to clear before shiping new stuff into MMA Lagos.
