How were you able to select the Nvidia card with 256MB ram?.

I was only able to get nearly the same config but with the only difference being -

- System graphics: NVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M (128MB) - the only option available to select for the T61 (part number 6459CTO).

@ $1723.50 before tax.

Anyhow say it is possible to configure using your numbers (i.e purchase from Lenovo @ $1836 before tax), this already amounts to 231,611 Naira using a live FX rate of =N=126.15:$1 I pulled from a web site (XE.com) before adding any other costs such as US state taxes, shipping to nigeria, clearing etc.

As you can imagine for me it is not financially viable to ship/deliver this exact config for =N=250,000. I think the Lenovo is particularly expensive though. Now that I have a very good picture of your exact requirements I will see if I can find any other transaction that is mutually beneficial and get back with that information.

I need to point out that the only graphics card that is suitable per your request is the Nvidia Quadro NVS 140M with 128MB of video memory. Since you are running 3D apps I am not sure if this is sufficient to meet your needs.

As well, it is pertinent to mention that this price is only valid for a few days after which I expect new prices to be in effect. One other thing - the manufacturer ships after 1-2 weeks.

From all appearances, the Lenovos are quite pricey in relation to the HPs.

I really am not sure if the newer Hps which were designed for vista will run xp hitch-free. There may well be some unresolved xp driver issues as you rightly pointed out. While these issues are ultimately resolved with patches/service packs etc - there could be a significant inertia before this happens and the exact timing of such an event occurring is at best indeterminate.

I had enough trouble trying to get a 64-bit version of linux running on my new 64-bit hp last christmas - after many iterations (and many man-hours lost to debugging spurios mundane issues) with different linux flavors I ultimately had to settle for Sabayon a new variant of Gentoo linux which was the only one that worked right out of the box. So, I would hate to be a sitting duck waiting for an unscheduled XP fix for any latent driver issues.

Thus, it may be safer to go with a system that comes pre-installed with XP - hopefully all device driver support gotchas have been worked out.

If I catch your drift, you meant to say that vista does *not* provide optimum support for Open GL, and not that "vista does provide optimum support". In any case your preference for a system that runs XP without any driver issues is crystal clear.

Since you are now considering the Lenovos I will get back with some quotes shortly.

Your desire to purchase an "affordable" system is an indication that you are willing to scale back on your earlier stated generous system config requirements in order to bring the price within the appropriate range. Since you are running 3D apps such as OpenGL, there can be no skimping on the GPU though. I don't know what specific price range you are working with, but I will try to use my discretion.

I see what you mean. Those cards add a little extra cost to the laptops (perhaps $50 on the average I think) - which really isnt a problem. The customers who require it will certainly pay for it, And if running Vista could be a problem with less capable graphics, I would be looking to purchase laptops with more powerful GPU cards by default - going forward.

I'll check my posts and update if necessary to make the graphic capabilities more descriptive.

Firstly I am not a proponent of a 100% money back guarantee for Nigeria. It is subject to a flagrant abuse even in the western world who are the progenitors of the concept it is frequently abused. And in Nigeria if you provide that, you will certainly have your hands full with many dubious returns.

Here is exactly what I said earlier :-

And for whatever it is worth, here is what I meant by my idea:-

Now on the question of a viable (i.e. feasible and affordable) transparent mechanism I don't have the answer to that.

This is probably an overkill for a transaction involving a reasonably small amount. In reality at the end of the day the onus may lie on each party to assume whatever level of risk they can accept initially.

But if I were to conduct a transaction of considerable value with a party with no track record and I am one of the first few customers, I will be looking to protect my money - even if it costs a little more to do that.

You talk about getting it right the first time. But you didnt address how to get your foot in the door to the first opportunity. How in your opinion will you get the first opportunity without addressing your very first customers concerns about losing their money to an unknown entity (from their own point of view that is)?.

There is nothing wrong(legally) with the Multi Level Marketting model in and of itself per se.

Legal wrongdoing only really occurs when they are marketting/selling an illegal product or service such as the illegal pyramid/ponzi schemes that portrayed the MLM concept in a very negative light.

There is however a moral aspect to MLMs in which I find a lot of MLMs wanting :-

- In order to attract new members, they exagerrate the potential income that accrue to members and probably tell blatant half-truths about how much money some members have already made or are currently making.
- Some also make outright misleading statements about how good the products are. e.g. some MLMs sell miracle cures that have not been proven to cure per their claims.
- While new members that join late in the game may be at a disadvantage due to the pyramidal nature of the payment chain, members who joined very early in the game stand to make a killing. Not that theres anything wrong with this as long as you are aware of where in the chain you belong and your remuneration expectations are not set unsually high. Matter of fact some MLMs recognize harder working members at the bottom of the chain and their system automatically promotes them (moves them up the chain) based on results.

I have evaluated a number of MLM opportunites - even joined a "clean" MLM to get a first hand experience - though I only recruited one other member and subsequently decided to discontinue my active participation. There was nothing "wrong" with the MLM itself or the business, but I didnt think much at the time about attending the very same meetings every wednesdays or asking my entire household to join.

Will I join an MLM today.? If I find an MLM that is well suited to me - certainly I would. But it has too be good for me.

There are different strokes for different folks. Some folks like MLMs, others don't. So if it floats anybodys boat don't be held back by anyones personal opinion/experience. You need to evaluate the MLM opportunity and decide if it is good for you. If it was me, here are some questions I would want answered :-

- Do you believe in the product/service enough to use it yourself and pay for it.?
- Is the price of the product good value in exchange for it?
- Are the claims made about the product true?
- How does the product compare with other available products?
- Is the product good enough to sell itself - or you have to sell it by brute force?
- Will most new customers make a repeat purchase -
- Is there any substance to the testimonials given by members of the MLM about their income or testimonials about users of the product about the product.
- etc.

This is just my humble opinion. As in every important decision anyone needs to take - look before leaping. Take your decision based on facts where available.

I see you agree that generating rapid turnover is an intrisic component of a sucessful player in an otherwise intensely competitive commodity market. The key is the value you provide (over and above the commodity price). Why should anyone buy from you in particular?. If you can answer that question and you can make a good portion of your target market agree with your answer (they vote by buying from you) - you are in business.

Before I made my decision, I consulted with some of my friends/associates who already established reasonably successful businesses in this same product domain. I also got conflicting signals -

from the overtly pessimistic

"why would you want to do that now, too many people are bringing in computer products these days"

to the die-hard cheerleading

"with the right prices the sky is the limit, nothing can hold you back"

I think reality lies somewhere in between the two perceptions.

I must admit, I was initially sceptical about doing business in Nigeria - but with the passage of time (and the gradual change in business climate from extremely harsh to more conducive) I have no doubt been cured of that sickness now.

Like you, I am essentially a hands on person (i.e. show me, do it, what if, etc). I don't mind trying, stumbling, failing, learning from my mistakes and hopefully suceeding at the end. If you don't try you can't succeed. There are some risks worth taking and for me this is one of them.

However, this is a two-way street - you the merchant also needs to be protected from nefarious/dubious customers. Yes I hope to go online sometime in the future when I have established sufficient traction to justify that. As a matter of fact, I was in Nigeria
last July and went to interswitch to enquire about how to collect payments online - and so I have that information handy for when I need it.

I hope you find a way to iron the kinks in your service delivery mechanism, by the Grace of God you will succeed ultimatelty. Just keep going - you will get there.

Let me get this straight.

Your IPOD is failing to power on when you turn on power to the unit - right.

As you have rightly stated - running down your battery is the most likely cause of this undesirable phenomenon.

As well in all likelihood, the battery ran down due to the failure of the charger unit.

Assuming these are the actual symptoms you are experiencing, my best guess is your IPOD charger has simply failed.

If I were you, I would simply find a known working charger for a similar IPOD (maybe a friend of yours can borrow you one) and try to charge your IPOD with that. If it works then you have isolated the problem to your failed charger. You can also go a step further to verify that your charger fails to charge your friends IPOD. Now how is that for an online diagnosis

You do that and get back.

You are so right. Speculatively buying laptops, etc and hoping to sell at an affordable price in Nigeria is no small feat. You have to do your homework carefully before committing any resources/funds. My research shows that the market at best remains quite competitive, but there is a very small open window of opportunity to differentiate yourself. Well I decided to take the plunge only recently. I am not greedy - not looking to rip off any one. At the same time I am not in a hurry to get my fingers burnt. After all, I'm funding this venture with my sweat and blood - my hard earned cash is at stake.

Your recent 4 day sale update was quite encouraging. Hoping to reenact a similar feat. Quick turnovers on modest margins are a good way to go.

Based on some quick number crunching I would expect a Philips Plasma HDTV (50") to retail for at least =N=300,000. This is just my opinion. Hope that helps.

They are coming in pricier than the acers, but IMHO the price differential is a good bang for the buck and reflected in the hp brand and higher config (i.e.

- 1-2MB L2 Cache vs 512KB
