Senator Dickson hosts Social Media Influencers, Unveils Bold Vision for Senate Committee on Ecology & Climate Change


Former Bayelsa governor and current Senator representing Bayelsa West senatorial district, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, welcomed Social Media Practitioners from across the nation today, gathering for a media interaction to discuss his new role as the chairman of the Senate Committee on Ecology and Climate Change.


At the media interaction, Senator Dickson highlighted his notable accomplishments spanning various sectors in Bayelsa, including the recent Excellence in Environmental Leadership Award for his outstanding contributions to the issues of environment. This prestigious award was bestowed on him by a coalition of 20 non-governmental organizations.


Furthermore, Senator Dickson's achievements encompass advancements in Education, such as the establishment of the Ijaw National Academy in Kaiama, the implementation of the Bayelsa Health Insurance scheme, and his initiatives that led to a reduction in maternal and infant mortality rates. Notably, his support for pregnant women registered with the state government played a significant role.

Under his leadership, the introduction of free boarding schools transformed the educational landscape, providing children with improved access to quality education. This initiative was especially significant as the concept of boarding schools was non-existent in Bayelsa prior to his assumption of office.

Governor Dickson's focus on healthcare infrastructure led to the establishment of numerous primary health facilities, over 80 primary health facilities were constructed, ensuring that quality healthcare reaches even the most remote corners of the state. These facilities have become crucial centers for providing essential medical services and preventive care to Bayelsans, making healthcare accessible and reliable.

The transformation of Bayelsa's infrastructure during Governor Dickson's administration was truly remarkable. The construction of the Bayelsa International Airport has not only enhanced connectivity but also opened up new avenues for economic growth and tourism. In addition, his commitment to improving the efficiency of the civil service streamlined governance, leading to better service delivery.


Governor Dickson's prowess in economic management was evident from the impressive growth in the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of the state. Under his leadership, the IGR surged from a modest 60 million Naira per month to an astonishing figure of over one billion Naira. This achievement reflects his strategic planning and implementation of effective revenue generation strategies.

Recognizing the importance of security, Governor Dickson launched the state security outfit, 'Operation Doo Akpo,' equipping it with state-of-the-art security equipment to combat crime and ensure the safety of residents.

Furthermore, his support for education continued through scholarships, ensuring that Bayelsa's brightest minds had the opportunity to pursue higher education. Additionally, the initiative of providing automatic employment to First Class graduates demonstrates his commitment to nurturing local talent and fostering growth.

Also, his contributions include the establishment of a substantial Cassava Processing Plant, along with the founding of numerous secondary and tertiary institutions.

You would recall that Senator Dickson was a recipient of Excellence in Environmental Leadership Award presented by Celestine Okwudili who represented Mrs. Ene Obi of Action Aid at the event.

Okwudili, said the award was conferred on the Senator for his contributions and stewardship in sustaining a healthy environment while serving as Governor of Bayelsa State between 2012 and 2020.

He explained that the Senator, during his tenure as governor, empaneled an International Commission on Oil Spills to assess environmental damages, determine responsibility, and develop a new legal framework for accountability and compensation in the area.

In his speech at the occasion, Dickson explained that the panel he constituted as governor, took samples of blood of residents of the oil producing areas and after laboratory tests it was discovered that there were heavy metal poisoning in their bodies.

Dickson said he drew the attention of the multinational oil firms to the development but that rather than doing something about it, they started fighting him.

He lamented that the situation was still reoccurring even as he urged the attention of his successor to the unfortunate situation and asked him to take action.

He said, “The oil companies were not cooperating with me then. They were even fighting me but I did not mind them because I knew I was fighting a just course.”
He also explained how he recruited 250 graduates to protect the environment, especially the forest resources.


The Senator called on the federal government to pay attention to the reckless deforestation taking place across the country.
The Senator promised to take advantage of his new position as Chairman, Senate Committee on Ecology and Climate Change to collaborate with all critical stakeholders on the issue of the environment.


He pledged to use all platforms available to him to advance the cause of the environment, the ecology and climate change.

“As the Chairman of the Senate Committee of Ecology and Climate Change, I will work with all NGOs in Nigeria, support the efforts of all institutions and bodies, to advance the cause of the environment, particularly to join the campaign against climate change.

EX- GOV EMMANUEL MOURNS LATE FORMER AIDE, SAYS ELDER BASSEY WAS A DEPENDABLE ALLY


Immediate past Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, was among dignitaries at the funeral of his bossom friend, the late Elder Samuel Bassey, who during his tenure as Governor served him as Governor’s Special Representative in Lagos.

Delivering a funeral oration at the burial ground, former Governor Emmanuel described the late Samuel Bassey who passed on at the age of 59, as a friend, brother dependable and reliable ally who was permanently disposed to doing good, and pursuing noble causes.

The former Governor while recalling the good moments they both shared while Sam was alive, expressed grief at the demise of his friend.

He urged the bereaved family to draw consolation from God's word as recorded in 2nd Corinthians, chapter 5,verse 1; "For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands”.

Mr. Emmanuel prayed God to grant his soul eternal rest, as he journeyed back to his creator.


“Sam and I met at the University of Lagos, two young men from the same part of the country, united by a common quest for the golden fleece. We became friends since then, braving the onerous task of university education in a land far from home. He studied Finance, and I, Accounting, and we met regularly, solidifying our bond of friendship in the process. We also worshipped in the same church, and were together in the Men's fellowship of the United Evangelical Church, Surulere. I have been part of some important events in his life, and I have seen him in different moods. But whatever the event or circumstances were, he was always his firm and steady self. In the over 35 years of knowing Sam, I have not had cause to doubt his sincerity, forthrightness and friendliness".

“He was a brother in more ways than one, and was permanently disposed to doing good, and pursuing noble causes".

“Be it in his private life, in his family life, in his service to the community and his church, Sam proved a dependable and reliable ally. He was an easy going fellow, who also took seriously any task he set about doing. This was evident in his career and even his service to the church, as his 8-year tenure as our church committee chairman, and other roles he has played, would testify. It was in recognition of his diligence and work ethic that I found it easy to appoint him as my Special Representative in Lagos during my tour of duty as Governor, a responsibility he carried out with his usual aplomb and serenity".


“Today is the 6th day of August, 2023. In exactly 2 days, ti would have been the 60th birthday of the man whose remains lie before us in this arena. If it were up to me, I would have preferred to be giving a toast at his 60th birthday, but here I am, standing here to speak about him in the past tense, giving this elegy for my friend and brother, Elder Sam Bassey!"

“There are things I like to talk about. There are speeches that I enjoy giving. But I do not like elegies. I do not like to speak about the dead, especially if they are people as close and as dear to me as the late Sam Bassey, whose remains lie here today and whom we are gathered to bid farewell. But life, like a river: eventually goes where it must, not where we want it to go”.

“Not too long ago, precisely in March of 2022, we converged on this same venue for the obsequies of his father, the Late Pastor Benjamin Bassey, who had passed on at the age of 92. While that event could have been termed a celebration of life, this untimely death can only be referred to as that of a star dimmed in its prime.

“There are people here who have known Sam much longer than myself. There are definitely people who haven't known him for as long as I have. But whether you met him briefly or you have known him for years, I am certain that we all will agree that Sam was a good man, a humble man, a gentleman, and we are all united in this deep sense of grief!", he mourned.

The service was attended by dignitaries from all walks of life led by the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno who read a message of Condolence on behalf of the Government of Akwa Ibom State.

The people of Ibie zone of Etsako East local government area of Edo State have congratulated Engineer Abubakar Momoh on his successful clearance as a ministerial designate.

The congratulatory remark was contained in a statement signed by comr. Johnson Adamu, the Executive Secretary for Ibie Zone Political Think-Tank, the umbrella body of leading political leaders in Ibie zone.

Adamu stated that it will be the first time in the political history of the zone that someone among them would be nominated to serve the country in a ministerial capacity, acknowledging Engineer Momoh's intellectual prowess and dedication to the growth of Ibie zone, Etsako east and Edo State as a whole.

While expressing the support of members of the entire ward 9 Ibie political establishment to Momoh in his new assignment, Johnson Adamu expressed gratitude to the President, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, for finding Eng Momoh Abubakar worthy for this important task..

A month after the Independent National Electoral Commission announced him as winner of the February 25 presidential election, the whereabouts and health condition of the President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu continues to generate ripples.

Although the media managers of the President-elect had hinted that his travel overseas was for the purpose of taking a deserved rest from the bruising toll of the campaigns, informed sources within his ruling All Progressives Congress party say that Tinubu’s travel abroad and stories about his failing health condition “are already getting many leaders of the party nervous.”

The apprehension over Tinubu’s health was further heightened when his spokesperson, Tunde Rahman, announced on Monday, “that the president-elect had directed that prayers should be offered across Lagos in celebration of his 71st birthday anniversary.”

Tinubu, who is celebrating his 71st birthday anniversary on Wednesday, had hitherto earmarked lecture series under the auspices of the Bola Tinubu Colloquium in honour of his previous birthday anniversaries.

While no one has been able to put a definite location where the President-elect visited overseas, it becomes even more worrisome, that no optics of his recreation activities has surfaced either online or through his media handlers since he left the country a week ago.

In both the ruling party and the opposition parties, there are growing concerns among political leaders on the prospects of Tinubu being inaugurated as president on May 29 when the incumbent, Muhammadu Buhari is expected to handover to his successor.

While the candidates of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party’s (LP) Peter Obi are currently challenging the declaration of Tinubu as winner of the February 25 presidential election, associates around Tinubu, especially one of his campaign’s media directors, Mr. Festus Keyamo, among others have continued to express worries about “plots to truncate Tinubu’s inauguration and undermine democracy.”

Competent sources say that the development is beginning to brew a cold war between the incoming First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu and the incoming Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima.

“Remi Tinubu no longer trusts Shettima because she believes that he is the one mobilizing marabouts, in the hope that he will be the beneficiary of the tragedy if anything untoward happened to the President-elect,” a source said.

In fact, it was gathered that Tinubu’s wife has flatly refused to open up to anyone in the ruling party about the whereabouts of her husband as she is said to continue to take up hostility with anyone who makes inquiry to her on the topic.

The deafening silence from Tinubu’s immediate family, especially the hostile demeanor from his wife about the President-elect’s whereabouts and health condition is already causing nostalgia within the circle of political associates of the situation when former President, Umaru Yar’Adua was ill and the then First Lady, Turai Yar’Adua kept everyone out of the picture.

In fact, it was learnt that the incumbent Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, known to be a close associate of Tinubu “was barred from seeing him because of the state he (Tinubu) was in, last week, necessitating the overseas trip.”

Oshiomhole, the proprietor, enabler of land-grabbers in Edo must be stopped at the polls

Before the coming of Governor Godwin Obaseki in 2016, Edo State was a mafia state, held captive by criminal gangs. These gangs ruled with maximum force and profiteered from inflicting pain and suffering on the masses.

They went around different communities and dispossessed people of their landed property with the backing of the state apparatus. This system was superintended by former Governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, who was the then governor.

Oshiomhole kept and enabled these criminals because they served his interest. During the period from 2008 to 2016, which can be described as the dark ages in Edo’s modern history, land owners could not sleep with both eyes closed because they were at the mercy of Community Development Association (CDA) overlords, who maimed, killed and dispossessed innocent Edo citizens of their landed property with the backing of the state apparatus.

Oshiomhole is best described as the proprietor and enabler of land-grabbing in Edo State. During his administration, not only did Oshiomhole enable the trend, he used it as a means to service his infantry brigade,’ a collection of retrograde band of anarchists who, popularly known today as Lions and Tigers, acted as enforcers and executioners for the former governor.

The appetite for violence and coveting other peoples’ money grew so much that they went very militant against all classes of persons in State to enforce their reign of terror. Everyone lived in danger.

With the coming of Governor Godwin Obaseki, a concerted effort was made to dislodge this non-state actors, with a series of painstaking reforms which have now ensured a sanitised land management system that is transparent, fast and reliable, and embraced by all well-meaning citizens of Edo State.

This new system of land management is today implemented through the Edo State Geographic Information Service (EDOGIS) and many Edo citizens can testify that not only are they able to register and access Certificate-of-Occupancy (C-of-O) for their landed property and transact business with it, but it is done at a reduced cost and in record time.

The episode with Obazagbon/Ogheghe community was a firm action to repossess government land that had acquired since 2017 for a new town project. Some land grabbers had swarm in to sell portions of the land to unsuspecting members of the public thinking that it was business as usual. Government had issued announcements overtime warning people to steer clear of the area, but many did not heed the warnings.

Complaints from those affected are being accessed by the relevant agencies in government and anyone with legitimate claims to the land will be duly compensated. The process is clear and all necessary information is in the public domain.

However, Oshiomhole’s pretence to be fighting for these persons is as half-hearted as it is deceptive. It is his ultimate plan to unseat the governor and send his Lions and Tigers after Edo innocent Edo people. He is plotting for a return to the dark ages.

It is on this note that we sound a note of warning that hooliganism has been banished in Edo State and will not be allowed to return. All the efforts Oshiomhole and his lackeys are making to hoodwink the people and cajole them into getting back into government through the backdoor will be resisted by the people through the ballot on the Saturday, March 18, 2023.
