Dsov2016: but hollywood has been having all black staring cast since 1929 Agreed. But the scale of this film is no where near those films. It's also directed by a black man and the budget is probably unprecedented in terms of black themed films. Plus it's a critical look into what might have been if Africa had not been invaded by colonial forces. There are so many reasons to celebrate it. It is not the usual film that stereotypes Africa for negativity (disease, poverty, illiteracy). It celebrates Africa as a possible technological power and its place as a moral compass in the world. It shows a world that possibly could turn to Africa as a solution for its problems. I could go on and on. Those possibly previous all black movies always highlighted one problem or the other usually associated with Africa (12 years a slave, etc). |

kjhova: Dear friend, please accept my apologies about my comment on functional brains as I see now how it could have come across as offensive. Believe me, abuse wasn't the intention.
That said, my take is that the more brain power people apply to the beliefs they were brought up with, the more ludicrous many of these stories tend to become. And indeed many have come to see the absurdities of religion but yet cannot seem to take that final step to get out of it completely. I wish that you and many more intelligent Africans will take this step for the good of the continent. Of course, my wish does not side step the fact that you have the freedom of thought and worship. I can only wish, be hopeful or shrug and move on. No offense taken sir. Your points have been duly noted. Have a great day. |

kjhova: Maybe you ought to doubt the efficacy of God's word for a change.
Didn't the bible indeed state that preachers like Paul etc, cured venomous bites, raised the dead, healed the sick just by casting their shadows on them, chase demons out of mentally ill folks?
And didn't God's word tell us that the Sun stopped for a day, a snake deceived the first woman, Balaam's ass spoke, Jonah survived inside a fish's digestive system for 3 days??
Again, didn't the bible tell us that the rainbow is the symbol of a deal between Yahweh and Noah, that Jesus raised some dude from death 3 days after burial, that some angelic guys may soon appear in the clouds riding on horses and blowing trumpets or that some wholly new and mint city of Jerusalem is going to climb down from Heaven and be planted on planet Earth, complete with its 12 pearly gates and streets of gold and multi-fruit bearing trees
You oughtta doubt every religious book ever written if you have a tiny fraction of your brain still functioning at all. Oga pls I'm at liberty to believe what I want. So long as I'm contributing positively to society and I'm not being a nuisance to anybody. If that is all you picked up from my post, then I actually think you are the one without a functional brain. Thank you. |

judgedredd22: My good people, here is a good example of how people fail in their academics.
So in your reverse-educated mind, you actually think you made sense with this post?
In your supposed rant, you clearly thought the celebration was because the movie is about black panther. Sorry to burst your bubble but the celebration is not about black panther as a movie. It is a celebration of the movie industry coming full circle and giving a major headline, big budget movie a black cast steeped in excellence. If you still don't understand why it is a big deal, maybe you should first of all, get to studying (if you know how to) the history of race and racism in the film/movie industry.
Secondly, it is big in america mostly because the movie's (with it's historical significance and context) release is in February - which in America is Black History month. Get it? (that is also why the movie company slated the release to sync, for maximum effect and profits - it s still someone's biz you know )
Thirdly, within the context of the movie, though it might be fiction, it epitomises independence and excellence set in african landscape which is contrary to already formed opinions/stereotypes about africa as a land of uncivilized, primitive people in need of constant help and support (Que Donald Trump's 'shithole' comment some weeks ago). The movie is already helping to shape narratives towards the positive in this context. A whole lot of foreigners are ignorant in this aspect.
These issues may seem trivial to you, as a shortsighted individual that you are. If you ever lived outside the shores of the african continent then maybe you would begin to understand the weight of shaping narratives. Just like Chimamanda Adichie has been trying to do by shaping the mindsets of foreigners towards africa through FICTION and breaking away the laid down history from a single story point of view, as told by colonialists. I'm sure you never understood why she is widely celebrated.
So, next time before you start spewing brain farts, do some reading and studying on the subject in question before making a fool of yourself in public. And the music/soundtrack to the movie is not chiefly american music, if you must know. The artistes are mostly black and african (with exception of james blake), from europe, africa and america. Which on its own, is nod to the cohesion of the black race across continents.
Movies might be FICTION, but there's a lot that goes into movie projects by way of subliminal messaging which has a lot of stakes behind it. Have you ever wondered what africa would have been like as at today, without the interference of the foreigners - arabian, european and american? That is the sub-message behind the movie and that is why blacks all over are hyped - it is about the social narrative, not FICTIONAL Black Panther. Maybe you should study some history and be informed context-wise. Before the slavery era, africans were technologically advanced and educated, and were kings in EUROPE, yes, the same europe!
You need to get your reasoning upgraded, from the kindergaten level where it is at the moment, to that of an aware black adult. READ!! Couldn't have put it any better. You give me hope that we still have articulate people and we are not doomed. |

ClintonNzedimma: Your points are useless as 'ueue' in the word queue. Yes Wakanda is fictional, it depicts an Africa that could have been if we got our acts right. It tells you there is nothing wrong in being in touch with your Africa roots and being advanced in society at the same time. Forget the movie and focus on the story As in. He starts his post with "this is fiction" and "I used to read the comics". He now wants to marry fiction with reality by bringing out senseless questions If he can't see why this movie should be celebrated (I.e. the evolution of Hollywood to embrace an all black starring cast with reference to Africa) then he is as dumb as concrete. |

This saddening thing happens all the time.
I remember as a little boy how a neighbor lost his wife. She had breast cancer. The diagnosis was surgery to perform a mastectomy. Husband (a university lecturer o) decided to listen to a prophecy by a so-called prophet that she would be healed. When her case got worse, they rushed her to UCH but by that time it was too late.
This discarding of the brain when it comes to "God's word" as it were is my problem with Pentecostal Christianity today. I don't doubt the efficacy off God's word. But I think it is being misinterpreted and being thoroughly abused by its paddlers in human form.
So sad |

being: Whatever the sorry case in the church today, all Christians ought to belong to a church according to Heb 10:25. If you feel distressed where you are, you should ask for guidance from the Holy Spirit on which church to go. But by all means, every bornagain needs to be committed to a church. Oga pause right there. "Assembly of the Brethren"is the key phrase in that verse you quoted. Does what is going on in the so called churches resemble any kind of "assembly of the brethren"? Places where cliques and associations are formed, usually based on how rich you are? Places where "brethren"cheat and extort themselves all to get rich? Places where gossiping, jealousy, backbiting and backstabbing exists? Places where modesty and humility no longer exist but rather people come to show off? Places where "brethren" cannot hold one another accountable including so called pastors? Certainly that isn't the place to be when you want to grow your faith. No not these churches. Park well oga. The Holy Spirit isn't someone you just call anyhow. |

Then he changed the topic and said he doesn't want to be seeing 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100. The least amount should be N200, that very day I quite the church. I haven't gone to church for 10 years. I am living happily in God's ways. Bishop Mike Okonkwo once told his congregation that he doesn't want to see any denomination lower than N100 when they were taking an offering for the needy. This was in 2005 or 6. His wife told the congregation that she needed 10 people to pledge N250k to support their Kingdom Life World Conference. 2004. My co-worker who doubles as a pastor was debating with me on tithing and I asked him where the storehouse in Mal 3:10 (that they always rush to quote when they want to dissuade you from thinking for yourself on this tithing issue) was located. His answer: Bank Account. I swear by my daughter that I kid you not. He actually said that. Like Jesus ever burdened anyone to give or forcefully coerced people to give in the first place. But no, these so called pastors of today with more insight into the word of God than the Word himself (Jesus) are telling us to do things that the Word never told us to. All to satisfy their own selfish desires and nothing more. Me I have sworn off church till the find somewhere that resembled the modus operandi of the early church: breaking bread regularly, not having anyone in need and in one accord. Until then these churches are nothing more than glorified social centers where the haves show off and the have-nots aspire to be like the haves irrespective of how the haves had their success. |

I left my own because the church heirarchy told us to start paying an extra 10%.
Why?
Because they said it was to help the G.O. in achieving his dream to relocate his university to his hometown in Osun State. That it was his dream to achieve it for his 70th birthday. They called it "sacrificial tithe".
(You can add up the info to detect the church and the personality in question)
I left because tithing in itself is a controversial issue, yet these people keep adding to our burdens. I could consider donating if the project wasn't personal. But no, they must tax us inspire of all they take from us in the name of "the Lords work" yet they don't care that we need to meet our obligations and responsibilities
With all the money the church receives every Sunday from illegal and fraudulent tithing doctrine and coerced multiple offerings, it is not enough and hence we must foot the bill for relocating I school I probably do not have any chance of sending my child to
This selfishness is why there is no growth in the church spiritually. This is why heathens will continue to mock it and serious souls will continue to question the basis of their faith. |
