Pope Francis said he was “deeply saddened” Saturday by the massive earthquake that killed more than a 1,000 people in Nepal and expressed his solidarity with those affected by the tragedy. The pontiff’s feelings were expressed in a telegram sent by his Secretary of State Pietro Parolin to the Nepalese Catholic authorities. “He expresses his solidarity with all affected by this disaster and assures those who grieve for deceased family members of his closeness in prayer,” the statement read. The pontiff also “offers encouragement to the civil authorities and emergency personnel as they continue their rescue efforts and assistance to those touched by this tragedy.” Officials said at least 1,170 people are known to have died in Nepal after the devastating 7.8 magnitude quake, making it the quake-prone Himalayan nation’s worst disaster in more than 80 years. Dozens more people were reported killed in neighbouring India and China and there are fears the final toll could be much higher. Pep Guardiola will return to former club Barcelona for the first time in the Champions League semi-finals after his Bayern Munich side were drawn to face the La Liga giants in the last four. Guardiola left Barca to go on sabbatical in 2012 and will look to defeat his former side - where he twice won the competition - as Bayern look to progress to the final for the second time in three years. Luis Enrique's side defeated Paris Saint-Germain 5-1 on aggregate to progress to the last four - while Bayern beat Porto 7-4 over two legs - but they have been kept away from fierce rivals Real Madrid, who ran out 1-0 winners over fellow La Liga club Atletico thanks to a late Javier Hernandez goal. Carlo Ancelotti's side will instead take on Juventus, who beat Monaco to earn their clash with the current Champions League holders source http://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/2914/champions-league/2015/04/24/11087932/champions-league-draw-barcelona-face-bayern-munich-real?ICID=HP_HN_HP_RI_0_1 The draw throws up the possibility of an all-Spanish final for the second successive year, with Real defeating Atletico after extra-time last season. Bayern last reached the showpiece in 2013, when they beat Borussia Dortmund, while Barcelona defeated Manchester United in 2011. Juventus, meanwhile, have not reached the final since 2003, when they lost to AC Milan on penalties at Old Trafford. Barca and Juve have been drawn as the home teams, and the first leg ties will take place on May 5 and May 6, with the second legs following on May 12 and May 13. |

Emeka Ihedioha-PDP imo state no going back

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, governorship candidate in Imo State and Deputy Speaker House of Representatives, Chief Emeka Ihedioha, on Monday in Owerri, the Imo State capital, said ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo offered him N150 million to support his third term ambition. He, however, said he rejected the offer. Speaking to All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, supporters at a reception organised by the party’s candidate for Owerri Federal Constituency, Honourable Dan Ikpeazu, Ihedioha said he rejected the offer to back Obasanjo to return to power for a third term because of his “forthrightness.” Ihedioha expressed gratitude to the people for welcoming him, and asured them that with his links and connections within and outside the country, he would provide sound leadership devoid of discrimination. “Anybody who knows me would know that I am not the discriminatory type, if I don’t believe in something, I will let you know why I don’t believe in it,” he said. He also appealed to APGA supporters to put sentiment aside and vote for him in the forthcoming governorship election on April 11, as he is the only candidate that has the chance to defeat incumbent Governor Rochas Okorocha of the All Progressives Congress, APC. He said he had been constituent, upright and faithful in his entire political career, adding that if they voted for him to become the state governor, he would rule with the fear of God. He added that Imo State and the South East in general were lucky that he became deputy speaker of the House of Representatives to ensure that Ndigbo still remained relevant in the decision-making of the nation. He commended Ikpeazu, APGA standard bearer for Owerri federal constituency, for his forthrightness, adding that the former Imo House of Assembly member shared the same traits with him. Speaking earlier, Ikpeazu commended Ihedioha for coming to address his supporters, adding that his only interest was how to unseat the incumbent Governor Okorocha. The gathering, which attracted other PDP chieftains, saw APGA members resolve to support Ihedioha in the forthcoming governorship election. http://ipaidabribenaija.com/news/item/115994-obasanjo-offered-me-n150m-to-support-his-third-term-ambition-ihedioha |
