Webmasters / Re: Any Locally Built Desktop/web Apps In Nigeria Without Problems? by Cactus(m): 8:09am On Oct 17, 2010
Thanks pips looking to contacting some of these companies. Trying to do some research and interviews. My hope is to be able to get a couple of interviews with IT managers for whitepapers.

I know that some companies dont take quality assurance seriously as they dont see the need. I have first hand experience.

Talking with my company about qa no one seem to listen. Then one of the tech guys was complaining about a problem, knowing he is part of the people that developed the solution. why? There were no tests done on the system just write codes and go  live.

I have no doubt that there are competent developers, designers, tech guys/girls. As an individual working as a freelancer or a consultant you could do your stuff professionally solid. I personally know many Nigerians that are top grade with the work they produce.

Are there any locally built dekstop/web applications, not websites that dont have a problem in Nigeria?

Using existing tools does not qualify, joomla, oscommerce etc. The web applications must be built locally in Nigeria before it can qualify. I have seen several but all have a problems either incomplete, security or usability issues that are not getting fixed.

I am mostly interested in companies that have built their solutions in Nigeria. There are many but need links to companies to look at

Programming / Re: Any Nes Game Developers Available? by Cactus(m): 8:13am On Sep 16, 2010
NES is definitely alive. there are specific target markets that are dedicated for NES.

Definitely not in the Nigerian market. There are still fanboys.
Programming / Any Nes Game Developers Available? by Cactus(m): 2:25pm On Sep 15, 2010
Do you know how to develop games on NES?

What is your experience describing which type of games you have developed.

What were your challenges.

This is for serious individuals only. Looking for potential NES platform programmers.
Webmasters / Re: My Www.247nigeria.com Has Been Hacked by Cactus(m): 8:12pm On Sep 11, 2010
No one should register with smartwebng. They are only to collect money and not fix problems for customers when need be.

Forget about getting replies maybe you will get one 3 days later.

FYI. When you are working with web applications. You should have a setup like this.

1. Setup subversion system on your computer
2. Develop on your computer locally. wampserver easy to setup.
3. Upload finished product.
4. If your database gets regular updates your can setup a cron job to be backing up your db
5. Use google analytics it will definitely help if you know how to read the stats.

So if your site gets hacked you can delete, upload a new copy, review your last backup for anything suspicious, upload if satisfied and everyone is happy like nothing happened.

But of course you dont have direct access to mysql db with smartweb, you cant do remote connections and phpmy admin is not working except you run php scripts to dump your database into mysql.

I do not plan to do any database stuff with smartwebng. I will be moving my content off. My main goal of getting a service with them immediately was because myname.com was available and I had to get it fast. So now I can go back to my former host company when I wish and setup a proper system.

Smartwebng will tell you not to email that you already have an opened ticket. you try to use their ticketing system but it doesnt work it is broken so you send an email and they reply saying stop opening new tickets. lol

I understand the type of structure smartwebng has so thats their wahala.
Education / Re: Admission Into American Universities For The Spring Session(visa Guaranteed) by Cactus(m): 7:17pm On Sep 11, 2010
No visa is guaranteed.

I know a former commissioner of education's daughter. She got admission to university in USA but the american embassy denied her visa.

Nothing is guaranteed. It is even better if people apply themselves instead of using proxies. It is still the same process that will be followed.

Go and do it yourself, and save yourself from regrets.

This guy is crazy really. Referencing people are against him. His crash was simply his fault wish they could release toxicology results. No street lights, intoxicated, and then it is your enemies fault?

These so called celebs need to start taking personal responsibility for their actions and stop blaming others. Just like Kanye tweeting that the media pushed him to do things he didnt want to do instead of taking personal responsibility.

Webmasters / Re: Php And Asp by Cactus(m): 7:01pm On Sep 03, 2010
@pc_guru, i started picking up codeigniter, very powerful and its automated code generation makes things faster but not easy to grasp when you start doing  permissions and privileges. can get complicated.

I also tried symfony. simpler,  feels more logical to me. The PHP MVC framework help developers which I completely agreed with. I can put things together and get an application up and running, but i still feel so comfortable with the normal coding of each line. I keep switching back to the normal code writing method.

I dont feel too comfortable with PHP frameworks.

The main issue is adoption. Banks can use PHP I believe it all depends on the type of architecture, usability and portability of codes. Security, that can be tackled.

There are no 100% secured IT systems in the world. Definitely some are more secured than others.
Webmasters / Re: Php And Asp by Cactus(m): 5:53pm On Sep 03, 2010
1. PHP will be here for a very long timeit will not be replaced. The only thing that can replace php is. If someone can develop a programming language such that you can write

connect to my database Alice

Display all rows from Alice Walker (where walker is the table name)

and it should give you a good graphical interface.

2.
you may want to read this

http://stackoverflow.com/questions/130869/can-php-handle-enterprise-level-sites-as-well-as-java

Some businesses are simply afraid of using open source application thinking it will be all bugged down and no support. There is support for open source application simply go to the applications website, surely there is going to be a forum or google and you will find it. If you dont find any a site like stackoverflow , and others are available to post your questions.

Eclipse, wordpress, joomla, OpenGroupware, OSCommerce, Thousands of open source projects you will get supported.

3. Learn one, become proficient and continue improving your skills then after that you can consider picking up another

Programming / Re: Whats My Worth As A Sun Certified Java Developer by Cactus(m): 11:56pm On Aug 29, 2010
We understand clearly the objective of getting a certification. This is not to discount the effort of those who have acquired their skills and gotten certified and doing pretty good.

Experience trumps certification any day any time. Getting certified = theory + some lab work. Getting on a project, trust me you will be surprised how different things could be. Though skills you acquired during your certification process will be helpful. Most of your learning will be on the job.

Talking about if the practical aspect of your training is enough for an employer. It may likely be enough for some employers. But dont put all your eggs on the fact that you have a certification. This situation is more like a catch 22. You need a job to get experience, you need experience to get a job.

This is my opinion in an ideal situation, from your description, an employer would most likely consider someone with a certification like you for an entry level job or as a trainee on a project (sidelined). But to be active on a project that will be tough unless you have exceptional talent. Your role could be more of support, documentation, etc.

My advice if you are trying to sell yourself I would recommend you focus more on the process you went through than the end result. I am hoping your training was for more than 3 months which will be great. So you can position that as a job experience/internship type of thing. Then after you finished, you felt you could get certified. Not that you want to be certified you went for training. You started the training to get the experience and acquire new skills, maybe describe some little things you were tinkering with as the thing that led you to training. And certification is a by-product.

It is a dog-eat-dog world. The reality is there is no straight answer, experiences differ, some find it difficult, some find it easy, but the key is try to get more experience however possible.

I saw an Apple job posting looking for iphone developer, they stated their requirements. You will be assuming they are only looking for university grads with some supercool degrees, but if you only did highschoo, if you did not even go to school, as long as you know how to develop on the iphone platform, you have solid experience working with development teams, you stand a chance of getting the job, Basically it all boils down to experience irrespective of and individual's educational background.

Can you prove yourself?
Are you confident enough with your skills?
What is the value-add you intended to bring into the project?
certification = standard procedure which is cool gives you the tool to get by.

Do a lot of reading, do your own research about new techniques, Your value-add should be targeted towards efficiency, streamlining a process which leads to cost reduction and hopefully meeting deadlines.

Your major concern is your potential salary. Well, the salary you may get wont meet your expectation. But hopefully whatever company you join, would give you the exposure and much needed experience to dictate your salary. Worry less about money for now

It doesnt need the modem to be connected before you get your code. Type in your IMEI number, check the body of your device. and calculate.

Webmasters / Re: Integrating Interswitch's Webpay With Joomla's Virtuemart(shopping Cart) by Cactus(m): 9:53pm On Aug 27, 2010
you should have gotten an instruction doc from interswitch on doing it.

I am actually thinking of creating a module for oscommerce, just a little pissy on doing it. similar process for virtuemart.

check your interswitch doc.
Webmasters / Re: Interswitch Is Unsecured by Cactus(m): 9:47pm On Aug 27, 2010
There are many companies in Nigeria that do not understand or value the concept of customer service. I have been to several companies, Glo office at challenge, Ibadan, LG office at challenge, ibadan, Fidelity office at garrison, port harcourt, and have to wait for over one hour before I was attended to, in all these places, maybe 6 people before me. Fidelity PH is horrible. they have like 7 or 8 counters and only one counter has a cashier. everyone has to wait and wait, I spoke with one of the other guys walking around his response was, everyone here has his assigned duty. Pretty much they are comfortable seeing people waiting.

Life, there are many others as well but these are the worst I have experienced.
Webmasters / Re: Interswitch Is Unsecured by Cactus(m): 7:05pm On Aug 27, 2010
UBA is also threading similar tracks as interswitch. Will give a feedback on that later. But I think UBA is also using interswitch's system. but Hopefully I will have a conclusive remark in regards to UBA's online payment implementation.

But what I have seen so far makes me worry a little bit.
