@abhost

this is not about the amount of money he charged. This is about the work that was delivered. 200k Naira is not much and it is very well worth it if you do a quality job. If he had done a really great job in design, I am not sure many of us will be lamenting as much as we are doing. The money paid vs work delivered doesnt match one cent.

Corporate websites could start from 2000$ which is about 310 000 Naira. Depending on specification and urgency. But if we are then talking about custom application development for corporations obviously that would go through the roof. So one needs to understand what is been dong, what can one do, and customer satisfaction.

@snoopweb

snoopweb:

MY OWN SIDE OF THE STORY AS THE WEBMASTER.

I am the webmaster he has a contract with. I have not wanted to comment on this matter, but I felt what the heck. First, you all that are calling for me to be hanged should remember that IT IS A LONG TERM CONTRACT. He mentioned three years, but the truth is that it is for four years or there about.

Listen men, 4years of Nigeria financial uncertainty. For this 4years, you will never know which direction our currency will go to. well since i was born, it has always gone up and inflation swallowing whatever you might have saved.

You all just had 5million naira and then you forgot is for a long term? Haba! How much is 5million naira to under go a job in a space of close to 4years? by the time you are through doing that, you will discover that you are at a losing end.

So you all are free to condemn me, but the fact remains that I DID NOT CONN HIM. I DID NOT CHEAT HIM and if he decides to pay the balance of 2million naira fine,

Yeah and understand that my charge was hight, but I was thinking into tomorrow too. He knows it, and you all know it. it is not gonna be easy to acheive the target he set for me. Better to charge high than not to deliver at all. I have my busines and reputation to protect. Se fini.

I will not be commenting on this issue again. Over and done with.

Snoop-Web

Do you see the problem? You do not understand look at what you wrote. "Better to charge high than not to deliver at all. I". WHAT A SHAME AND DISGRACE. You say you are the webmaster for that site. Look at the site, and if you are comfortable with what you did, it is an epic fail. Shame, disgrace and you are proud to say that you are asking for 5million naira because of inflation. If you are so comfortable with your work why didnt you think about doing it maybe on a one year deal and after the first year depending on the results you can recommend going into a long term relationship.

This is absolutely unethical of you to CON him the way you have done.

@37ports
If you are unable to sue him, well make sure you print a copy of this page so you have as a record as he or she has come forward to write something that his incriminating.

If he pulls it down and you need it, just leave a message I can send you. Also, this is not as a means to revenge. Let the public know the company name so they avoid doing business with this type of companies or people. make the information public.

This is absolutely insane and he/she is proud to say. YES OF COURSE I CAN CHARGE 5 MILLA JUST BECAUSE THE VALUE OF NAIRA GOES UP.

What about customer satisfaction? What self guilt to make sure you deserve what you are asking for? Shame.

He called you and made you do the job on his own accord, dont you think about your skills, what you can or cannot deliver so you decide if you are the most approriate for the job.

YOU CONNED HIM
YOU CHEATED HIM

You did not come on here to write about the work you did you just came on here to justify that 5 million is for you for doing nothing. You did not explain what you have been able to do for him apart from a crappy website if you are the one that did it.

if you knew you actually deserved the money, at least you would have written that I have done this and that just letting people know oh advertising in papers is expensive bla bla bla bla bla.

if you decide to come back to reply to any of these posts, think carefully before typing.

Good ideas man. Thanks.  Will add them to my treasure chest grin

Per naija and data, you know better - we would rather argue, generally speaking, based on, "do you know who i am?"
than on facts and figures.
we can find
Maybe we can partner. How does cactide (nig) plc sound?  tongue

At this stage, I am thinking seminars is the way to go.  Hopefully you garner so much of a following that eventually, the big cats will want to speak with you.  Yeah, I think the old adage, "you have to spend money to make money" will definitely apply here.

"Do you know who I am?" hear it often in Nigerian movies so cheesy.

Awesome. Cactide that will be cool so that people on NL will know ah ah ah ah . Now I am going to play with anagram tools.

There are many intelligent people in Nigeria that try to do the best they can. Many people on here definitely understand and see the things lacking in the IT industry in Nigeria. And would be great to gradually make change.

Yes we can.

Useless for me to write about union bank. bad graphics, bad layout/presentation.

Everything is just wrong.

That is all I can say about Union Bank.

I wish I could sit and talk with the IT Managers of these banks and other companies

You keep giving me jobs to do, now I am realizing that there is so much to do.

The usability testing stuff is actually a very good idea, if you are thinking about doing it. might be tough but keep planning. maybe the way to go around this is. Get one or two companies like these banks. and make a deal with them for very reduced price and they allow you to use them as case studies then you can use this as a platform for new clients so they see what different this makes. If they dont want to pay big bucks F them find others. Seminars, whitepapers, many things. By the time the ones you struck a deal start having better customer service ratings, others will be like whao what are they doing and we are not? whos behind them. then one can me like I am. You wanna talk? so ways to go around it.

I was actually thinking about Starting a Business Intelligence consulting firm in Nigeria because people dont value data. Data is sexy. I love data.

FIRST BANK uses this two domains

firstbanknigeria.com
1stbanknigeria-online.com

you dont know when it changes while you are on the site. go to the first one firstbanknigeria.com and start playing around while looking at the address bar. it changes when you want to log in

1. English fail. So many typos especially on the career application page. Geez men
eg Title : Mr. Miss, Mrs.   (Ms.)
work experience : current emolument ( I never heard this word before first time. I had to check the meaning in dictionary. geez just say current salary)
Proffetional Details, Proffessional Certificate, Professional Body (3 different spelling of professional in one section. they writer needs GOGGLES.

2. Text too small. difficult to read.

3. still says copyright 2007 eh eh eh the first shall be the last

4. i tried logging in typed in wrong information, the page reloaded without telling me  i made an error in uname or pwd

EDIT: I FOUND THE ERROR MESSAGE IT IS ON THE UPPER LEFT SIDE OF MY SCREEN. I was not looking there geez. I need information focused where I need them. If i see your page designed with a wrapper, I dont look outside the wrapper. please Mr. Banker put it by the log in form.

5. why put options for the normal user log in when you only have dashboard?

6. this freaking scam popup keeps coming anytime i try logging in geez. but it doesnt say my information is wrong.

7. beginning to piss me off so much things wrong with this site

Also failed 0%

EDIT: they also have a walking elephant. on thhe home page it is done in FLASH. why make the elephant walk in flash tiring oh my just placed a walking elephant in flash> then later it changes to an image. I guess the elephant got tired of walking wanted to rest.
Webmasters / Re: Nigerian Bank Websites by Cactus(m): 2:55pm On Sep 03, 2009
GTB is horrible gush. I am going to piss in my pants really. Just playing around with it now because I have nothing else to do.

Trying to log in

popup window comes out = EPIC FAIL NUMBER ONE

Scam alert prompt = ok no problem understandable we continue

Login page = hm why in the hell will you use a keypad? this is absolutely not userfriendly. Of all the bank websites I have seen this. Of all the years I have spent online doing useless things, this is the first time I am seeing a keypad for the password box. And only the keypad can be used. Are they trying to prottect against robots, keyloggers? geez. FML

Ok i typed in wrong information and it goes to error page saying that my session has timed out after extended period of inactivity or something like that. BS i have been there only about 5 seconds how can my session be extended? TOTAL F-ing BS. Just telling me my uname and pwd are wrong or one is wrong. and ask me to go back to log in. Well It asked me to go back to log in.

HOLY F-ing TACO. you are taking me back to teh scam alert warning page? Gush, I am not blind. If i know how to use the internet, if I have an account with you that means I dont have a short attention span. Get it? I dont want to read that crap anymore pissing me off.

Grade = 0% TOTALLY EPICALLY FAILED

I play with the next one

Oh and it took me a long time to find the log in to my account button. (Buy me a coffin)

Havent they heard about usability testing? men seriously this is something I ought to do for a living
Webmasters / Re: Nigerian Bank Websites by Cactus(m): 2:35pm On Sep 03, 2009
the designs are actually cool. maybe some color tweeking in some places needed. the diamondbank menu effect with the light out page effect is actually cool but moving your mouse on and off the menu often kinda makes it boring and cheesy.

EDIT: apparently gtb does it to. gush now boring theirs is actually not cool. i guess they are using simiilar systems

so i tried login in to dbank

first time = service unavailable
second time = you did not enter id (maybe i typed too few characters)
third time = invalid user ,

Of course I know I dont have access just playing with. Didnt snoop through others

Getting there gradually still a long way to go.

I wish I could see what the account log in page looks like. If only one had access
Career / Testing For Employment In Nigerian Companies by Cactus(m): 2:24pm On Sep 03, 2009
Going through the job boards on NL I always see, things like ,  bank testing coming up, oil company testing coming up etc.  What type of tests are these? Does anyone have a sample? I am really curious. Obviously you can already guess that I have not worked in Nigeria.

So why all these companies decided to start using tests to shortlist people? If we are talking about applying for certain jobs like computer programming, statistics, engineering etc. We can talk about giving you sample test relating to what you want to do. Maybe give you a programming question to solve if you apply for programing job.

But to me it seems like almost all jobs require some type of aptitude testing. I am not going to bash aptitude testing and the nature of employment testing in Nigeria because i dont know what type of questions are asked.

1. Are the questions related to the work that is needed to be done? eg computer programming = programming questions, accounting job =  accounting questions, public relations job = public relations questions

2. if one fails the test will that automatically mean that one will be disqualified from the position?

3. Do interviewers spend some time before the tests with interviewees? Because some people maybe bad test takers and could be great employees

4. Are there any jobs with major companies that don't require testing?

5. If i have worked in company A for 4 years and I want to go to company B, if they say the position requires testing, will I have to take the test? because if I have to take a test for job in Nigeria right now, I would most likely fail. and my years of IT experience may not be considered valuable

6. Are previous experienced valued? Or are the tests required by new graduates?

I would really appreciate it if someone can post few sample questions. They don't have to be the same questions they have done on tests but I will like to see what the questions look like.

Thanks

I really don't get why people don't get it.

No need to do cheap stuff. Pay the money and get a great application. No shortcuts. Do it clean and straight really.

I posted an article sometime back about a factory having problems. Trying to solve it in-house they could not and they ended up calling a consultant. And I think the consultant charged 5000$. And the factory manager asked why you changed me so much just to tell me what and where the problem his. And the consultant replied, well, 500$ or so to show you the problem and the remaining because I know what to do. Something like that.

Spend the money geez. Makes everyone happy, customers will be happy and will always come back if they dont experience problems and would likely recommend others to visit. gush

There are not many pictures about Nigeria online. And the one you see are the same. You know my mind you know exactly where this is going.

1. No images existing online should be copied.
2. Amateur, professional, candids. NO ADULT CONTENT

It has been a long time since I was last in Nigeria. Even if I go to Nigeria, I just go to one place dont know about other places. So If one can get contributors, that would be great.

So I was reading the job/vacancy board. Then saw a thread about mtn openings. Of course I had to look at it. so the poster gave link to the site which was not complete so easiest thing was to go back to mtnonline.com and click to their career section.

I clicked the career menu then i SCREAMED arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. FML. An alert popped up about script injection. So, I dug through several pages of the career section basically that section of their site is messed up. Then I noticed a couple other things

1. mtnonline is built on the .NET Framework
2. the career section = asp
3. by some magically reason, there are sooooooo many nest or deep rooter tr and td
4. the main link to the career page which http://www.mtnonline.com/careers/login.asp  (click at your own risk)  I believe is actually fake because look at the text above the email not proper grammar and the password is not masked. So I guess this was the page code that was either partially replaced or totally reconstructed. If mtnonline actually did this page like that FML.

So, I put together what I found with screenshot and sent it to them and hopefully they will pull it down and fix it asap.

All the luxury of online payment in usa or other places in the world we take for granted is something one should absolutely appreciate as it is convenient.

Sitting in my room, midnight looking around nothing to eat, go online searching for someplace open, place order online or by phone, pay wait for food to come. So cool and stress free.

Buying things online and having it delivered to another person on a different continent. Within hours.

Many nights during my schooling days were like that. Hopefully this can happen in Nigeria soon without much difficulties.

A lot of things need to put in place in Nigeria for security reasons.

Don't pay any balance.

This is a TOTAL RIPOFF

You want to pay over 32 000$ for 3 year maintenance and for that CRAP?

Look at the site. that is nonesense.

Look at the terms of your contract. If they have not fulfilled any of the terms, if you can proof it or they didnt give you status updates next thing is for a lawsuit.

give me 3000$ and I give you Superduper deal.

Dont pay any balance
Look up the applicable laws if they failed to meet their end of the contract
If they threaten you that you need to pay, ignore them they cant do anything
Depending on applicable laws, just get yourself ready to count your losses

Post your contract if you dont mind

But, the deal is that many people do the semaphore concept stuff but they wont know it by the name semaphore. I just read about it and I know what it is. I didnt know that was what it is called.

argh

That is all fancy names jare.

I have worked with Joomla, Pligg, and some others just picking the ones you have in the list. Joomla and Pligg targets different markets. Everyone knows Joomla is powerful.

You saying you know what semaphore is while another person that was in UK doesnt know it, is an invalid argument. Not everyone knows all the programming languages even by name. here is a list

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_programming_languages

There are tons on there I am sure not many of us know that other people know. So using this reasoning as a basis for proving a point is not logical

Semaphore is not even in the list. So apparently the people that wrote that didnt know about semaphore. Sounds logical to me

Programming / Re: Is Programming A Talent? by Cactus(m): 11:45am On Sep 01, 2009
http://wordnetweb.princeton.edu/perl/webwn?s=talent

Talent
Noun
* S: (n) endowment, gift, talent, natural endowment (natural abilities or qualities)
* S: (n) talent (a person who possesses unusual innate ability in some field or activity)

Computer programming is an acquired skill. Different people have different level of proficiency.
Computer programming is not a talent. It is not something that comes natural. However, an individual having some specific qualities would find computer programming easier than others. Critical thinking, problem solving, logical reasoning skills among other skill-set.

Those make understanding how a programming language work easier. With continuous practice and dedication, an individual can attain a very high level of proficiency.

It is an acquired skill not a talent.

Before you regiister, google for oracle or any other area you are interested in. Read about the technology, if it invoolves coding, look at sample codes etc. Wikipedia is a great learning resource. Have a general idea about the technology. If you feel it is something you may be interested in doing long time. good luck.

Though I need the money, but stuff happens I guess. Oh well we are good now things going ok.

Got another request this morning but this one is paid. From another girl through her company. So we keep talking and negotiating.  I can charge more to cover part of the cost for the free one.

seems like one helluva customer. but good thing you're making progress from your starting point, at least she likes the mash up. she seems really excited about the site too. hopefully she's satisfied at the end (cross fingers) and recommends u to a lot of ppl. or just people will see your good work on the site and contact u.
I would have raised the point about u doing the work for free! lol she doesn't seem to be appreciative of that.

but it's always better not to compromise your ethic too much to satisfy a customer that's for sure. and it's a good thing you're not doing that.

she is excited about her own site. after we bought the domain. she posted it on twitter. keep in mind the domain still had the web hosting content on it. phew. i was like remove it cos it may discourage people once they see nothing there from coming back.

Yes, I can always use the fact I am doing it for free against her but that will be a cheap shot at her. Won't do that. It will be too inconsiderate of me to say well, you have no choice am doing it for free. Not ethically acceptable in my opinion.

Hopefully at the end of the day, she is happy with what she gets.

Oh No different girls. Whao. amazing you remembered. eh eh eh eh. Impressive really
The one earlier this year. She was great amazing. She was cool no problems with her.
This one is different. She interviewed me for a newspaper article. She is nice but when it comes to tech stuff pisses me off.

For me this part takes the cake

-----------
She says:
wa.
i heard some people do it in one night.
----------

There are quite a large number of none techies that assume hm things can be done over night. E.g. they could say, I saw an ad online that says get your website in six hours. So why do you need 2 weeks or more to do it?

Am human not a machine, I am giving you my time FREE. So, do not complain on how much effort I want to put into your work.
We were arguing about domain names when she was picking a name. Then I was like no that sounds too cheesy. I made a spelling mistake and she got a pissed. I think i wrote something like this. "I way away from my computer" of course way = was. But she could have asked  me dude what do you mean and I would explain. Then i was like forget about the process, it is the end result that matters. You get what you will get and you will get it great.

Ok by the way her english = not so great but ok. Chinese.

whisperingeye is not the name of her site. my own little game on her. I need to have an ace to play with.
