How Much Should Web Site Design, Development, and Hosting Cost?
-----------------
Once upon a time there was a steam generating plant that was not producing much steam. After a frustrating search for the cause, the plant manager, in desperation, called in an expert. After only two hours on site, the expert found the problem and placed “X’s” on two pipes that were causing the problem, saying that they had to be removed.

When presented with the bill, the plant manager asked the consultant how he could charge $5,000.00 for only two hours of work. When he asked for an itemized bill, this is what he got:

1. $400.00 - Placing “X’s” on two pipes

2. $4,600.00 - Knowing where to place the “X’s”

The plant manager got what he paid for and probably a lot more. He had already used up more than that amount on his own staff not to mention the loss in revenue while the plant was shut down. For him, securing the advisory services of a consultant was the right thing to do.

I am moving to Nigeria to start a full service web application development company. Will be churning out sites each week. Get contracts, outsource the work for cheaps. and keep getting more contracts. so I get money without doing anything.

Oh my so possible.

I was reading a Chinese newspaper yesterday. In one of the sections you have the title as CRIME AND PUNISHMENT.

Basically the section lists CEO of top Chinese companies and the bribes they got and the punishment they got. about 6 of them were listed. and 4 of them were executed. The other two were supposed to be killed but they got suspended execution maybe killed soon dont know. The amount of bribe taken ranged from 200 000$ to about 2 million $.

Reading this and knowing people still accept bribes for contracts etc. Men I will be scared as crap to take bribes knowing that possibly once I am caught give or take 4 weeks, I would be executed.

Scary men

There could be a variety of reasons for experiencing what you did. You may still want to run antivurs/spyware check on your computer just incase you have trojans, spyware, bots etc on it.

Could be one of the above but cant say unless I have the computer in front of me.

I guess case closed

FF just seem to magically get things right but IE, something always gets screwed.

This is my dream. If this can happen. it will be delightful.

I wish that, Microsoft abandons its IE and fully adopts FF as default browser.

I know this may not even happen because of how tied in IE is to windows OS. But sometimes I just wish. So no one will worry about fixing, patching for IE.

Computers / Re: Help Window Vista Is Giving Me Problem by Cactus(m): 7:31am On Aug 18, 2009
Seun:

Where will a Nigerian get the 64-bit version of Windows Vista?
Anyway, a 64-bit OS should be able to run 32-bit applications.

Anybody can get a 64bit version of vista. Some computers come preinstalled with 64bit. It is available if you want to buy it.

A 32bit software running on a 64bit OS is not guaranteed to work. However, there is a compatibility mode in vista 64 just like the 32. Not applications written for 32 bit system will work on 64bit system

Kindly read

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Vista_editions#64-bit_versions

64-bit versions

To support 64-bit platforms such as Intel Xeon, Intel Core 2, AMD Opteron and AMD Athlon 64, Microsoft released 64-bit versions of every edition of Windows Vista except for the Starter edition. These editions can run 32-bit programs by running them within the WOW64 subsystem. Most 32-bit programs can run natively, though applications that rely on device drivers will not run unless those device drivers have been written for 64-bit Windows. Most older hardware doesn't have the necessary support to get the drivers written.[21][22][23]

Other applications may have difficulty as well. For example, the Visual Basic 6 IDE will run natively on 32-bit editions, but will not run at all on 64-bit editions.[24] Some application vendors will only provide full / premium product versions for 64-bit Vista and cut down versions for 32-bit Vista (e.g. Adobe Premier Elements is 32-bit and the full Adobe Premier is available for 64-bit Vista - with more capability but at a much higher price).

Various reviewers have reported that the 64-bit editions of Windows Vista outperform their 32-bit counterparts in synthetic benchmarks such as PassMark.[25][26][27] For example, in early testing of 64-bit support in Photoshop for Windows, overall performance gains ranged from 8% to 12%. Those who work with extremely large files may realize noticeably greater gains in performance, in some cases as dramatic as ten times the previous speed. This is because 64-bit applications can address larger amounts of memory and thus result in less file swapping — one of the biggest factors that can affect data processing speed.[28]

All 64-bit versions of Microsoft operating systems currently impose a 16 TB limit on address space. Processes created on the 64-bit editions of Windows Vista can have 8 TB in virtual memory for user processes and 8 TB for kernel processes to create a virtual memory of 16 TB.[29] In terms of physical memory Windows Vista 64-Bit Basic supports up to 8 GB of RAM, Windows Vista 64-Bit Home Premium supports up to 16 GB of RAM, and Windows Vista 64-Bit Business/Enterprise/Ultimate supports up to 128 GB of RAM.[8]
Computers / Re: Help Window Vista Is Giving Me Problem by Cactus(m): 3:26am On Aug 17, 2009
@poster

You are most likely using the 64bit version of Windows Vista. Sometimes the software you may want to use CANNOT work in the 64bit environment. This is most likely the isse you have. You can find alternatives to the software that are 64bit compatible or move to a 32bit Vista OS.

On your desktop or windows explorer, RIGHT CLICK on MY COMPUTER then click on PROPERTIES

read the line that says SYSTEM TYPE. If it says 64 BIT , that is your problem

Why wont I recommend using red the way it is used?

Take an overall look at the color scheme of the site. The red really pops out like bam I am in your face. like it is screaming, CAN YOU SEE ME NOW? ah ah. Sincerely, I do not know how to pick colors for site design. I am horrible with color schemes. Not sure what to recommend. I only work on the gray scale. If I have a web project to do, I spend a lot of time looking through CSS galleries to find nice color combination.

I mentioned about colorblind people. Some people dont see color red and other colors.
Maybe you can use a softer red. That may work or you look for colors that can match the red and use it in other parts of the site to make the look and feel harmonious.

OH MY GUSH, I let the monster out of the cage

If you feel comfortable putting designed by on your works, great good for you. I never put on the sites I did. And the last site I did more than one year ago just now doing another one. i am not going to put my name on it either.

But I tell you what I like to do. One of the website projects I did last year. somewhere in the code if you read through it all. you will find something that says "cactus loves so so so so and so person as a comment in the code"  I put my girl's name in there. ah ah if they find it good luck to them. Just make it my little dirty secret. I could do this in a database table, or as a db password or username. ah ah

So I guess i am doing worse now than people putting designed by ,

majority of products have visible brand names. I do not go shopping maybe once a year. And I carefully search, The wristwatch I wear, has no name in it. I mostly wear white longsleeves, khaki pants without any names showing. so I can survive.

You should follow me to lunch sometime then you will fully understand how picky I am

Culture / Re: What Do You Think About Nigeria by Cactus(m): 2:10pm On Aug 15, 2009
The following does not serve as a justification for what is going on in Nigeria but only to put things in perspective.

Yes, people know that Nigeria has a bad image around the world. The question is, for all the bad things that people have been saying about Nigerians, is it up to the crime happening in USA?

Take for instance all the Yahoo boys talk. If you put all the Yahoo boys together and all the money they have been able to get, is that amount up to the billions of dollars Bernie Madoff took from people? How about Sanford? the Ceos of Wamu, lehman brothers etc? You can continue to name them all. All those people combining the money they have stolen surpasses what some Nigerians have done. You cant compare. But life in usa goes on without much fanfare. Once it is in the news, everything dies off a couple of weeks later.

oh well hopefully sometime soon there will be less bad news about Nigeria around the world.

1. Which instant messaging software are you using that does this? (yahoo messenger, msn messenger, skype, AIM messenger, trillian or other one?

Since you know which IM program is giving you problems

click START > CONTROL PANEL > ADD OR REMOVE PROGRAMS

In the CURRENTLY INSTALLED PROGRAMS
click on the IM software giving problems and click on REMOVE and proceed by say YES/OK to remove the software.

I think you can try restarting your computer. then directly download the software from the makers website

if it is yahoo, yahoo.com
if it is msn, msn.com
if it is skype, skype.com

etc

Dont download through third party site

Afam:

So, if you have a good reason to see credits as irritating actions let us know so as to avoid confusing others who may assume that your personal opinion is the professional or standard take on the issue.

Do we then ask for removal of emblems on our cars just because we don't like them?

This is a personal opinion. There are no professional justifications that I can reference that I can use to convince people to remove those statements from any site they create. I never made any assertion that it was professionally irrelevant. I clearly stated this is a personal preference.

I do understand your analogous comparison of car emblems and logos of other products. Take for instance, clothing items. I avoid any clothing items that have visible brand logos. I do not want to be a walking advertisement. So you see it goes beyond web design. It involves every aspect of my life.  I went shopping for a white tshirt without any sort of writing and logo visible on the back and front. Took me over 30mins to find in one shop at the mall. So difficult to find where I live. The stores went into were all like just buy this one it is good (they had funny writings on them). Oh well just my taste. I have duct tape covering some of the brand names of my electronics. eh eh .

Each person can decide to brand their works by putting their signature "Designed by, Created by , " etc. That's the creators decision to make.

If I buy a car I will probably find a way to cover it up.

Just felt like ranting.

Webmasters / Re: Pls How Do I Make Multi Navigation Bars by Cactus(m): 10:41pm On Aug 14, 2009
@remoranger

How can you describe a multilevel dropdown navigation system without referring to nested list?
If he/she decides to download an already made menu and use it for a project by tweaking it, deconstructing it, and learning about the structural composition of such navigational system then that would be considered reverse engineering.

There is no big grammar involved in this. The best to do is search on dynamicdrive as suggested above or just search google for horizontal drop down menu.

Download and install what feels good ah ah

There is no shortcut in learning about mutilevel navigational systems than to learn them from scratch if you want to learn them

Hope my opinion clarifies things eh eh

Moving from windows 2000 to windows XP. quite a breeze. Windows vista came out and now windows 7.

I used windows xp for many years. And it is just today going through another thread that I realized I do not know what XP stands for in windows xp.

I have not googled for the correct answer but my gut tells me it stands for Extreme Performance.

So we should have Windows Extreme Performance. Sounds logical eh?

Ok so say what you feel it means if you didnt know it before dont search for answer before you write what your opinion is. This should be interesting I hope

Windows XP = Windows Extreme Performance

Put it outside in the sun to unfreeze it. ( I had to couldnt help it)

Normally, I would try to find what the problem is before taking any drastic measures. But in this instance. you may spend more time trying to find the problem.

So my recommendation is that you format the computer and get a working XP cd and reinstall the OS.

Thinking about this, I don't know what XP stands for in windows XP.

I google it then create a thread
