Because those who steal know if they leave the money back home, a political opponent will seize it and re-loot it.

Case in point all the "recoveries" since 1999 by successive governments including Buhari. Houses, cars, and other properties are auctioned for pennies on the dollar. Monies are diverted through useless schemes including security votes, stabilization fund, ecological fund, repair of dilapidated infrastructure, ghost workers, and dozens of other corrupt conduits.

As such a corrupt politician would much rather build infrastructure in other climes, even if it's Sao Tome; buy real estate anonymously using shell companies in London, Melbourne, Calgary et cetera; or hole it up in a Belize, Caymans, British Virgin Islands, Panama, or Swiss bank account with full protection and then use smart financial instruments to invest said money on the S&P 500, through large banks like HSBC or asset managers like BlackRock.

And this is not just about corrupt African politicians. This is how paranoid Arab sheikhs, Russian oligarchs, even Western politicians with questionable income streams from businesses that lobby them, as well as the top echelon of the criminal hierarchy--talking Chinese Triad, Italian Sicilian Mafia, Japanese Yakuza, Jewish Mafia, Mexican Sinaloa Cartel keep their cash.

It's called "black money". It is why the Rotschilds with their immense wealth and reach as well as being the private bankers of the Vatican City can claim that their current patriarch is only worth less than $2b; even though the lowest estimate of their assets is over three times Jeff Bezos net worth.

This is why someone like Tinubu can say Osun state does not have money that he'd steal. Or ex Egyptian President Mubarak having $70b in previously unknown funds, and one of Putin's mansion's costing $1b to build.

And this is just one facet. I can as well go on about the legitimate reasons why any PEP would want to keep money in multiple jurisdictions or how countries like South Korea and Chile are making giant strides even though there's crippling corruption in both countries. Almost 70% of South Koreans distrust their government, yet Seoul is the most technologically advanced city on the planet.

Nigeria is not ready to develop. Nigerians are not ready to change their situation. And lest I forget, Sowore is a bast*rd!

Of course buhari is the only president in the history of the world that has scored the record of putting his country into recession twice consecutively first as a military head of state through a coup and second as a democratic president through election rigging. Now he's campaigning for a second term of hardship. I guess he wants to score a recessional hatrick that will wipe out Nigerians like a landslide.
