The new owner will ask them to reapply and decides who to employ and who not. Those employed could be undervalued (pay less than shoprite) and cut down many benefits. the workers are fair, first - they are no slaves, their contract is of employment and not slavery which gives them liberty to quit at any time.
secondly - what the are fighting for is their right, entitlement and benefit. at the expiration of the contract with the company they are meant or entitle to it.
don't forget that deductions were made from their wages while still in service with organisation as such they are entitled to their severance package which is the standard world over.
leaving don't mean there won't be no one to work or replace them, there are thousands of unemployed Nigerians who will joyfully replace them so why force them to stay when they felt like no more interest?
leaving for competitors in Nigeria!? I doubt that, shoprite seems about the largest mall around Nigeria more so no competitor would muscle the strength to employ everyone parting with shoprite.
on establishing a competitive mall is a fair business approach (competition is allowed) in as much Nigeria is running a capitalist economy system. if you will come to think of it this workers don't have what it takes to compete with shoprite all 'em put together.
