Properties worth millions of Naira were destroyed in a fire incident which gutted the male hostel of the college of medicine, University of Lagos Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba.
Starting at about 10.am on Wednesday from room 648, the fire spread to room 647 on the third floor of Block6, Alliakilu Hostel.
One of the occupants of room 648 who said that he was not able to save their property, stated that around 10.am, he was playing football when he saw some students running all over the place.
“On getting there, I noticed that it was my room that was on fire, I tried to put out the fire, but it was sointense that it soon spread to the next room. The fire was raging because we couldn’t get fire extinguisher which was in the hostel manager’s room.
“Also, there was no water on the floor, so we had to go down stairs toget water which we used in putting off the fire,” adding that some minutes later, they “were able to get fire extinguishers and attempted to put out the fire.”
It was learnt that a commercial motorcycle operator, who had come to assist in dousing the flames sustained eye injury and was immediately rushed to LUTH which is within the premises. Fire service men arrived about an hour after the students had almost quenched the fire.
Another occupant of room 648 identified as Henry said it was the third time there had been a fire incident. He noted that, although the immediate cause could not be ascertained, it could likely be due topower fluctuation.
“According to him, there were electric sparks in the room sometime early this year (April) while we were attempting to installa ceiling fan. Some wire got burnt inthe process, a few months back, a socket in the room sparked and it caused a blackout on the whole floor. After that incident, engineers came to repair it but since then, no permanent solution has been found.The engineers demanded money forthe repair from us and after giving them they did not solve the problem”.
He blamed the school authorities fornot providing enough fire fighting equipment; he stressed that, the occupants of room 607were a bit lucky to save some of their properties form the fire.
“My SSSCE Certificate, my N25,000, my laptop and other valuables wereconsumed in the inferno,” Henry said.
Reacting to the incident, Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the college Mr.Olusesan Odejimi said, “only two rooms were affected and not the entire building, there was no form of casualty”.

The efforts of Babatunde Raji Fashola of Lagos state to transform the city of Lagos to world class standards was recognized yesterday when the state was listedamong the 20 global cities in the world. Cities that made the list would be committed to implementing innovation to help improve the lives of 121 million citizens.
The announcement, which was contained in a survey released by LLGA|Cities Pilot, noted that the programme was aimed at discovering and implementing the most promising solutions that meet pressing social and urban challenges.
A statement by the Commissioner for Science and Technology, Mr. Adebiyi Mabadeje, said over the coming 18 months, the initiative would evaluate about 1,000 submissions and implement real-life pilots in all partner cities to improve the quality of life in the cities.
Participating cities vary in population size from less than 100,000 to 21 million. The cities thatmade to top lists include, Aalborg, Barcelona, Boston, Christchurch, Eindhoven, Fukuoka DC, L’Hospitalet, Lagos, Lavasa, London, Mexico, Oulu, Paris, Rio de Janeiro, Rosario, San Francisco, Sant Cugat, Sheffield, Tacoma, Terrassa and York.
Challenges are presented by global cities – in partnership with Oracle, the UN Global Compact Cities Programme and The Climate Group – in areas such as mobility, economic development, social inclusion, health and wellbeing, urban management, lighting, energy, culture, future government and sustainable lifestyles.
“For year 2013 presentation, Lagos is seeking solutions to deliver content seamlessly in bandwidth-challenged environments to provideaccess to the social and economic benefits of Internet.
“In the past three editions, LLGA has attracted 1,519 entries from 70 countries. By providing systematic market intelligence to decision-makers in cities, the programme hasproven to help cities discover innovative solutions that reach citizens three times faster with 80 per cent lower spending,” the statement added.
Speaking on the awards, Mabadeje, who is also the Chairman Lagos Innovation Advisory Council, said: “We are once again participating in this programme which seeks to promote innovation in service delivery by tapping into the more than seven billion potential innovators worldwide and hope LLGA will realise the solution that will best resolve our city’s challenge”.

The candidate of the Republican Party in the just-concluded presidential election in the United States of America, Mitt Romney, said at a conference call with donors, on Thursday, that Barack Obama won the 2012 presidential campaign because of “gifts” given by the administration to black, Hispanic and young voters.
“The President’s campaign focused on giving targeted groups a big gift, so he made a big effort on small things. Those small things, by the way, add up to trillions of dollars.” Mr Romney said.
He said moves like the president’s healthcare reform legislation and a decision to suspend deportation of certain illegal immigrants who came to the country as children proved “highly motivational” on Election Day.
Mr Romney also said he had “gotten beat up pretty bad” on issues including his immigration stance and personal wealth.
“I am very sorry that we didn’t win,” Mr Romney told the donors. “I know that you expected me to win. We expected to win. It was very close, but close doesn’t count in this business.”
