The Federal Government yesterday said plans have been put in place to ensure steady supply of electricity in the country by October 2014. Minister of Power, Professor Chenedu Nebo who briefed State House Correspondents in Abuja said government has made efforts to ensure constant availability of gas at power stations to boast power generation. Professor Nebo, who spoke after a meeting on power stakeholders at the presidential villa, Abuja, chaired by Vice President Namadi Sambo, added that the debt owed power generation companies would also be cleared. He said “The generation companies have been complaining that they need to have all their bills paid. The good thing about this is that arrangements are being made to make sure that all the generation companies get their money as at when due. “We are working on that. That is part of the meeting that was chaired by Mr Vice President. “Next thing is how far we have come with the issue of even settling the gas question. The gas question has remained for quite a while. But very thankfully, the Honourable Minister of Petroleum Resources and I, the central bank governor and chairman of NERC met severally to address those issues. “And that eventually ended in finding resources to take care of the indebtedness of the generation companies to the gas companies. “So once we take care of the backlog, we insist that the gas companies will eventually produce more gas.’’ He maintained that there are visible signs of government’s efforts to ensure constant electricity supply across the country in the past one week following improved gas supply. “The cheering news from all of these is that if you have noticed throughout the country in the past one week people have been getting much better power supply. “The gas is now beginning to come back and it’s something that gives all of us a lot of joy. And we know that it will continue to grow that way even until December because now some of the facilities, maintenance, repair works on the gas equipment and so on”. He added. “The gas producers have come to a place where almost all of these is being taken care of, and then the new gas we are expecting we have then trickling in right now. “So that part of the shortfalls we’ve had in production up to this time, we hope that by the beginning of October, we will see a much better stabilisation of the entire power delivery system in the country. Speaking on generation capacity, Nebo noted that power supply have hovered around 4,500 mega watts. His words, “First, I would say we rejoice that for the first time in a long time we have been averaging over 4,500 MW when we include nearly 300 mw of spilling reserve which is always put there to make sure that the reliability and stability of the grid is ensured at all time. “So, we are really moving forward; it may not be as rapidly as Nigerians expect but it is important to let everybody know that indeed we are advancing, we are making progress and we will continue to make progress”. Obi Justina Ejelonu, a nurse who attended to Patrick Sawyer, a Liberian-American Ebola carrier who flew to Nigeria on his way to attend a conference in Calabar, has died. Her relatives rang SaharaReporters moments ago with news that she passed away this morning. Ms. Ejelonu had been kept in a quarantine facility in Lagos. Until her death, the outdpoken nurse was at the center of a campaign to get the Zmapp experimental drugs to Ebola victims in Nigeria. John Okiyi-Kalu started the Internet campaign a few days ago. Ms. Ejelonu was one of the primary contacts with Patrick Sawyer at a Lagos Hospital where he received treatment after he was rushed from the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos where he collapsed. She was aged 25, her relatives said. SOURCE: http://saharareporters.com/2014/08/14/ebola-another-nurse-who-had-contact-liberian-american-patrick-sawyer-dies-lagos

An experimental drug developed by a Nigerian in diaspora for the treatment of Ebola is expected to arrive the country today, the Minister for Health, Onyebuchi Chukwu, has said. The drug, called “Nanosilver”, has been approved for use by the World Health Organization (WHO) as an experimental treatment ethical in the case of the Ebola epidemic. The Federal Govt yesterday approved the use of experimental drugs in the treatment of the deadly virus. SOURCE: http://lindaikeji..com/2014/08/ebola-experimental-drug-developed-by.html |
The 75 year old Spanish priest who was infectedwith the Ebola virus in Liberia is being treated with the new experimental drug, Zmapp, which was used to treat two US missionary doctors infected with the virus. The Spanish government claimed yesterday that the drug was imported from Geneva and doctors have begun to administer it on Fr. Miguel Pajares at Madrid’s La Paz-Carlos III hospital where he is in isolation. The first person to be treated with the serum, Dr. Kent Brantly, saw his condition improve after being given Zmapp. Since his treatment began, Fr. Pajares is said to be in stable condition, no longer has fever, and hasn't any hemorrhaging. Doctors believe that his condition will greatly improve in the coming days. So, when is Africa going to get this drug? SOURCE: http://lindaikeji..com/2014/08/spanish-priest-with-ebola-treated-with.html |

US President, Barack Obama said yesterday August 6th that it's too early to send the unapproved experimental drug, Zmapp serum to Africa where the outbreak of the Ebola virus has recorded more deaths and threatens human existence. Zmapp serum has proven to be effective in treating Ebola cases as two American doctor infected with the virus in Liberia are currently being treated in the US and are said to have improved after the use of the drug. Continue... According to AFP, President Obama suggested that affected African countries should focus more on building strong public infrastructures. "I think we have to let the scientist guide us. And I don’t think all the information is in on whether this drug is helpful". On whether he would help fast track the approval of the drug should medical experts conclude that the drug is effective, President Obama said; "I think it’s premature for me to say that because I don’t have enough information. I don’t have enough data right now to offer an opinion on that.” While stressing that the deadly virus is not airborne, Obama said "the countries affected are the first to admit that what’s happened here is the public health systems have been overwhelmed. They weren’t able to identify and then isolate cases quickly enough. As a consequence, it spread more rapidly than has been typical with the periodic Ebola outbreaks that occurred previously."He said the US is currently working with their European partners as well as the World Health Organization to provide resources to contain the virus. If you want to know more about the Ebola virus, then read this alert from the US Embassy here in Nigeria ... In order to help our Embassy Community better understand some of the key points about the Ebola virus we have consulted with our medical specialists at the U S State Department and assembled this list of bullet points worded in plain language for easy comprehension. Our medical specialists remind everyone that they should be following the guideline from the center for Disease Control and the World Health Organisation. • The suspected reservoirs for Ebola are fruit bats. • Transmission to humans is thought to originate from infected bats or primates that have become infected by bats. • Undercooked infected bat and primate (bush) meat transmits the virus to humans. • Human to human transmission is only achieved by physical contact with a person who is acutely and gravely ill from the Ebola virus or their body fluids. Continue... • Transmission among humans is almost exclusively among caregiver family members or health care workers tending to the very ill. • The virus is easily killed by contact with soap, bleach, sunlight, or drying. A washing machine will kill the virus in clothing saturated with infected body fluids. • A person can incubate the virus without symptoms for 2-21 days, the average being 5-8 days before becoming ill. THEY ARE NOT CONTAGIOUS until they are acutely ill. • Only when ill does the viral load express itself first in the blood and then in other bodily fluids (to include vomit, feces, urine, breast milk, semen and sweat). • If you are walking around you are not infectious to others. • There are documented cases from Kikwit, DRC of an Ebola outbreak in a village that had the custom of children never touching an ill adult. Children living for days in small one room huts with parents who died from Ebola did not become infected. • You cannot contract Ebola by handling money, buying local bread or swimming in a pool. • There is no medical reason to stop flights, close borders, restrict travel or close embassies, businesses or schools. • As always practice good hand washing techniques, but you will not contract Ebola if you do not touch a dying person. • US EMBASSYPlease share this information with your friends and families and try not to spread panic on social media. The Premier League has announced Howard Webb has retired from refereeing after a 25-year career. Howard Webb has retired from refereeing to take up the role of Technical Director of Professional Game Match Officials Limited [PGMOL]. The 43-year-old, who officiated the 2010 World Cup final, will be responsible for overseeing the technical direction and standards that govern the on-field performance of PGMOL’s match officials. Webb has officiated 500 Premier League and Football League matches and the 2010 World Cup final. Webb began his career in 1989, progressing through the Northern Counties and Football League to become a Select Group referee in 2003. "I am very excited to start this new chapter in my career after a wonderfully rewarding 25 years on the pitch," Webb said. "I have spent over a decade with the best seat in the house for Barclays Premier League matches, been lucky enough to be involved in nine UEFA and FIFA tournaments, and taken charge of the UEFA Champions Leagueand FIFA World Cup finals. "Refereeing has given me so much and it’s important that match officials who have had the rewards remain in the game to pass on their knowledge. I also have much more to learn about the business of refereeing and the best place for me to do that is with PGMOL. It’s an incredibly positive working environment and we all have a common goal of improving refereeing. "Over the last five years in particular we have made huge strides in terms of our accuracy, fitness and professionalism. The current Select Group are the best referees this country has ever produced and I am thrilled that I not only get the chance to continue working with them but also the opportunity to help develop the next generation of Select Group officials." There were fewer red cards at the 2014 World Cupthan any other edition since 1986 ( .The 2014 World Cup saw a joint-highest number of goals scored (171) with France 98. Germany reached the World Cup final for the eighth time; more often than any other side in the history of the competition. Germany scored 18 goals – the last team to score as many in a World Cup tournament were Brazil(also 18) in 2002. Argentina trailed only in the final for just seven minutes in the entire tournament (excluding injury time). Belgium reached the quarter-final stage, despite only holding a lead for 52 minutes in their five matches combined. Brazil committed 31 fouls in their quarter-final win over Colombia; the most fouls that they had made in a single World Cup game since records began in 1966. James Rodríguez became the first player to score in his first five career World Cup appearances since Peru’s Teófilo Cubillas (across the 1970 and 1978 tournaments). Gerd Müller in 1970 was the last player to do it in a single tournament. Miroslav Klose became the top scoring player in World Cup history with his strike against Brazil in the semi-finals (16 goals). This was the first time that three sides from the Concafaf region made it out of the group stages and into the last 16 (since the format began in 1986). Costa Rica knocked out Italy, England, Greece and beat Uruguay, four sides placed in the top 12 positions of the Fifa Rankings (Uruguay – 7th, Italy – 9th, England– 10th, Greece – 12th). Only six European nations made it to the last 16; a joint-World Cup low since the round of 16 was introduced in 1986. All eight group stage winners progressed to the quarter-finals stage for the first time in World Cup history. One point was England’s lowest-ever return in a World Cup group stage. This was the first time that England have been eliminated from a World Cup at the group stage since 1958. Three of the last four teams to win the World Cup have gone out in the following group stage (France 2002, Italy 2010, Spain2014). There were more goals scored by substitutes in this World Cup than in any previous edition (32). Silvestre Varela’s goal for Portugal v USA was the latest during normal time of a World Cup finals match since 1994 (94min 33sec). Tim Howard made 15 saves in the USA’s quarter-final defeat to Belgium – no goalkeeper has ever made as many saves in a single World Cup game (1966-2014). Three of Holland’s five outright victories in this World Cup tournament were from losing positions in normal time. Italy have exited at the group stage in their last two World Cups. The last time they managed this was in the 1960s (1962 and 1966). Germany are the first European team to win the World Cup in Latin America. Teams from Uefa have won the last three World Cups, the first time a single confederation has won three in a row. Germany’s 7-1 win was the biggest margin of victory ever seen in a World Cup semi-final. With their destruction of Brazil, Germany became the top scoring nation in World Cup history (223), overtaking Brazil in the process. Germany ended the tournament with 224 goals, three ahead of Brazil. Luke Shaw was the youngest player to play at this World Cup finals, when he played for England v Costa Rica (18 years 348 days). 13.3% of shots have been scored at these finals; a higher proportion than in any other World Cup tournament since records began in 1966. There were only three direct free-kicks scored at these finals, the fewest since 1986 (3). In 2010 there were five scored, while in 2006 and 2002, nine were scored. The only World Cup to see more own goals than this tournament (5) was the 1998 finals (6). Switzerland’s Diego Benaglio was the only goalkeeper to register a shot at the 2014 tournament, thanks to a late effort v Argentina. The Algeria goalkeeper Rais M’Bolhi created two goalscoring chances; only three of his team-mates managed more in the tournament. Brazil have topped every group they have played in at a World Cup from 1982 onwards. Spain conceded 5+ goals in an international (5-1 v Holland) for the first time since losing 6-2 to Scotland in June 1963. That four-goal margin is the biggest losing margin by a defending champion at a World Cup. Brazil’s 7-1 defeat to Germany was the biggest losing margin by a host nation at a World Cup. Tim Cahill has scored in three World Cups for Australia; no other Australian has done so in more than one tournament Ghana’s Asamoah Gyan (6) overtook Cameroon’s Roger Milla (5) as all-time top scoring African player at a World Cup. Algeria became the first African team to score four goals in a World Cup game when they beat South Korea 4-2. England’s Wayne Rooney recorded his first World Cup assist in his team’s opening game v Italy and his first goal in their game v Uruguay. Keisuke Honda became the first Japanese player to score at two different World Cups. Switzerland’s Xherdan Shaqiri scored the first entirely left-footed hat-trick at a World Cup (1966-2014). His treble was also the 50th hat-trick in the history of the World Cup. In losing 4-0 to Germany, Portugal conceded four goals in a World Cup for the first time in their history. Clint Dempsey’s goal (29 seconds) v Ghana for the USA was the fifth fastest in World Cup history. The England goalkeeper Joe Hart made only one save in two World Cup games. In his 126 minutes of World Cup action, Diego Costa failed to muster a single shot on target (only five shots in total). In winning Euro 2008, World Cup 2010 and Euro 2012, Spain conceded a total of six goals, one fewer than they did in their three matches at World Cup 2014. Alex Song picked up Cameroon’s eighth red card in their World Cup history. His cousin Rigobert Song is one of only two players (along with Zinedine Zidane) to be sent off twice at World Cups, meaning the Song family is responsible for three of Cameroon’s eight reds. Olivier Giroud’s opening goal v Switzerland was France’s 100th goal at World Cup finals. Neymar scored the 100th goal of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil’s 100th game in World Cup finals history. Against Japan Colombia’s substitute goalkeeper Faryd Mondragon became the oldest ever player to feature in a World Cup match, at 43 years and three days. Honduras have now played nine games without a win at the World Cup (D3 L6). They have played more matches at the World Cup without winning than any other side (New Zealand, El Salvador and Bolivia – all six). Ghana went out in the group stage for the first time ever (in their third World Cup). Now only three teams have never exited in a World Cup opening group stage: Germany, Hollandand the Republic of Ireland. Fabio Capello has won one of his seven World Cup games as a manager. Mexico have been knocked out of the World Cup finals at the second-round stage in all six editions since 1994; no team has been knocked out at this stage as often as this. Nigeria have lost all three of their World Cup second-round ties (0-2 v France in 2014, 1-2 v Italy in 1994 and 1-4 v Denmark in 1998). Ángel di María’s goal v Switzerland was the latest ever scored by Argentina at the World Cup (118 minutes). Switzerland have failed to score in their last three World Cup knockout matches, last scoring in one in 1954. Belgium conceded only three goals in five games at the 2014 World Cup. Holland progressed to the semi-finals for the third time in their last four World Cups. Costa Rica’s Keylor Navas saved 21 of the 23 shots on target that he faced at this World Cup (91%). Thomas Müller has scored 10 goals and provided six assists in just 13 World Cup matches. Against Brazil in the semi-final, Germany were 5-0 up faster than any other team in World Cup history (29 minutes). The 7-1 defeat to Germany equalled Brazil’s all-time biggest margin of defeat (lost 6-0 to Uruguay in 1920). Germany scored two more goals v Brazil than England have in their past two World Cup campaigns combined. Argentina have progressed from all four of their World Cup semi-finals. Argentina v Holland was the first World Cup semi-final to finish 0-0 (including extra-time). Lionel Messi did not touch the ball in the opposition box in the entire 120 minutes. Nine of the 14 goals Brazil conceded in this World Cup came in the first 30 minutes of their games. Brazil conceded 10 goals from 14 shots on target conceded in the semi-final and third place play-off game combined. Mario Götze is the first substitute to score a winning goal in the World Cup final. Mario Götze is the youngest scorer of a goal in a World Cup final since Wolfgang Weber in 1966 (22 years, 33 days). Sami Khedira is the 10th player to win the European Cup/Champions League and World Cup in the same season. But without messi, Argentina will definitely not come near the final sef. So year he does.u av a point bt i stil believe d award shld av gone 2 a player lyk muller. This is an individual award and no one rili cares if u av a good team or not . Even in dat Argentine team, u cnt underestimate the cohesion, doggedness & resilience Mascherano brings 2 dat defensive midfield, bt because he is nt a forward, no one is rili talkin abt dat. The Brazilian Football Federation (CBF) have identified Chelseamanager Jose Mourinho as their first-choice replacement for Brazil head coach Luiz Felipe Scolari, who is set to lose his job following Tuesday’s shock 7-1 World Cup semi-final defeat to Germany. Scolari’s last match in charge of the Seleção is likely to be the World Cup third-place play-off between Brazil and the Netherlands which Brazil also lost 3-0. And the CBF, according to Spanish newspaper Marca, want Mourinho to replace the former Chelsea boss. But Mourinho, most likely does not want Brazil job - yet Mourinho, having acquired true services of Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas this summer, has no intention of leaving Stamford Bridge in order to take the Brazil job. The Portuguese coach is assembling a team ready to fight for the 2014/15 Premier League title and is contracted to the west London outfit for the next three seasons. However, Mourinho’s agent has suggested that his client may be interested in the job - which is one of the most prestigious in world football - in the future.
