LiteratureRe: My Honest Observation And Critique Of Americanah By Chimanda Adichie by cecegorz(m): 4:39pm On Nov 06, 2016
FakoMaybach1:
Before i start please note that all i opine here are just random thoughts and i post them here not out of mischief or to insult Chimanda

The book Americanah is set in a plot of the military and early democracy era of Nigeria and this is a time that fortunately i am conversant with,
it follows the love story of Ifemelu and Obinze; how they met in secondary school, kicked of the relationship till university till ifemelu went to the united states and lost contact...i wont bore u with a full synopsis so i will go straight to my analysis and support it with passages and quotes

THE GLORIFICATION OF SUGAR DADDIES/ Reading this book you might begin to think that the writer (being adichie) either subtly encourages sugar daddysm or is indifferent to it.
Aunty Uju in the book is a well educated woman, a medical doctor but refuses to settle with any young man in Nigeria but chooses to sleep with a Military man (General) for FREE!!!...the writer presents a scenario that makes it look not to bad for young girls to sleep with old men old enough to be their fathers and not ask for material things.
The writer refused to take into cognizance that highly impressionable young girls could read this book and feel that dating already married men is not so bad. Through out the book there was no subtle condemnation of this act or even an effort to shine light on younger symbiotic relationships. the writer chose to paint young relationships in a very poor taste, in the case of Kimberly and her husband and even obinze and his wife; the writer presented a scenery that depicts women who marry young, successful and handsome men as insecure, paranoid and sad.
Even Ifemelu's friend Rayinudo is also into this sugar daddy runs and the writer goes so far as to show that she was bought a Jeep, if that is not an advertisement of the profitability of sugar daddys then i wonder what else it could be...Chimamnda being a brilliant writer does not pay attention to the social responsibility her work needs to have

Men Are Depicted As A Means To An End The writer made subtle effort to show throughout the book that a man in a relationship must be used to achieve any target and dumped whenever it suited the ladies. This is exactly what i interpreted in the relationship between Ifemelu and Curt, Aunt Uju and Bartholomew, Rayinudo and her sugar daddy, Ifemelu and Blaine ( this one was for her activist and academics side), and so many other instances in the book.
The writer does not see relationships between young couples as a journey, but as an enterprise. Subtly she encourages ladies to go for men who are very rich, and every relationship somebody has to be bringing more or it is balderdash. The book presented men in a light that made me sick to my stomach and i asked myself "so this is where these women place us? as a tool to be used, expired then thrown out" the manner which ifemelu cheated on curt, the way aunt uju divorced Bartholomew after she did not get the child she was looking for showed me a side which i never want to venture, now talking about venture

American Grass is not so Green As a young man with high hopes this book helped to kill any dreams i had about America. i had a friend who always said " After Heaven na US, even e get as u go waka for US u go see God direct"... But this book has put an end to that fantasy.
The writer constantly hammered on racism and black on black segregation that makes one wonder if the thought of greener pastures is worth the stress and strain involved. The English society which i personally thought were to conservative and rigid was painted in a liberal light, and American society painted 50 shades of black. The writer painted a simple solution to race issues in England which is class, your money is ur rank while in america with money u are still second class/ Nigger.

Morality and Lack of it For a book that is not a romance novel or a james hardely chase soft porn; this book has a very low standard in the setting of morals. premarital sex was not frowned on even underage sex was treated with kid gloves. Ifemelu and obinze's escapade in obinze's house was made to look cool as if young people like that could keep things under check; if i hear.
The writer saw nothing wrong with ladies having sex with married men, not once was the consequences of such folly exposed: even when aunt uju got pregnant for "The General" the writer created a scenario of All is well that ends well, the general owning up to the child and taking responsibility....this is bad and any girl reading this might be conned to thinking it is applicable (we all know how young girls are easily influenced by books they read)...HIV, Gonorrhea and other STD's were hardly mentioned, i began to wonder if in that world they didnt exist.
i dont know if it is Adichie's western upbringing that caused this but i have read the Soyinkas, the Achebes, the Elechi Amadis, the cyprain ekwensis, and there was a thin code of conduct observed by this great literary icons, sex was not "cool" to this men and they spelt it out in black and white. Obviously Adichie does not think in african lines little wonder the book was titled Americanah.

Now to the issue that vexed me the most

The Ridicule Of The Institution Of Marriage Adichie made sure she downplayed marriage to the best of her ability, only ifemelus parents were the couple she really wrote on and she presented them as poor, the father a sycophant and the mother a bordering fanatic. If she had anything against marriage she should have said so.... Obinze's wife Kosi is a God sent babe any man could pray for. A girl that started with him when he had nothing, was patient, dutiful, beautiful, well mannered, cultured etc; and how did Adichie treat this character? she made sure Kosi lost out to the rude, childish, condescending, ill mannered Ifemelu. Adichie threw out the notion that one can grow to love someone she replaced it with in her own words "Feeling of responsibility". Adichie made single motherhood look Hip,cases of Aunt uju, obinze's mum comes to mind and surely Adichie made sure she blocked out the longing, loneliness and insecurity these women pass through daily.
In all i can say i am just getting to know Adichie having read two of her works that is Half of a yellow sun and this Americanah....i will go for purple hibiscus and see what she penned there...i really need to know other new generation authors we have please mods if i made an error move it to the right section cc Obinnau copy lalasiclala
Very nice review.
Coincidentally, I just started reading the book, having bought it over two years ago and left on the shelf for lack of time.
I',ve only read half way but I think I agree with you on all points.
You will get Chimamanda's disdain for church doctrines(which includes marriage ) right in his first Book, The Purple Hibiscus.
Following up that in Americanah, she fully expressed that same sentiments you hear on Nigeria tweeter trends today about Feminists' disregard for men and the marriage union. Little wonder she is regarded as the most vocal black feminist today.

I planned buying the book for my nieces in secondary school, thank God I've read it first! The romance scenes are explicit sex content!
They won't get that from me smiley smiley

However you might not agree on her book themes, you can't fault her keen sense of narration. She sure weaves beautiful stories that makes you feel you're watching a movie.

PropertiesRe: FG To Raise N1trn For Housing Scheme – Osinbajo by cecegorz(m): 2:20pm On Oct 12, 2016
The lack of seriousness with which these guys handle issues is evident on why they are yet to deliver anything tangible.

In a country where current market value of cheapest 2 bedroom flat in a terrace apartment goes for like 10m (Using LASG LagosHoms price structure), even people whose income is about 10m/annum will do proper adjustment to their monthly expenditure to be able to afford the mortgage repayments on the facility.

It is an utopian never ending dream for the FG to think that 30k/month, that is paltry 360k/annum earners will afford housing, unless they want to give them for free, and where will they source such free money from?

The workable solution is to remove all the useless encumbrances in Federal Mortgage access via the NHF so that most people that currently earn let's say from 10m upwards, and has been contributing to the National Housing fund, can afford mortgage to own their homes. If they can even achieve 50% of people in this bracket owning their homes, it will free up so many rental apartments for those that earn '30k/month' comfortably move in.

There is no way, with our current economy that you can start providing housing for people that earns 30k/month. The plan is DOA.

Wow!
Don't you love Nigerian Police and their Super cop effectiveness!

Ransom of 15million was paid within 24 hours of the kidnap, and the victim was 'rescued with gallantry'

Then within one week, all the culprits have been rounded up!

Please whatever strategy they used here should be used on the thousand and one pending kidnap cases across the country.

If there was any daft that this woman is daft, she has cleared it all.

Buhari gleefully went to sign the Paris agreement just a couple of weeks back, an agreement which stipulates cutting down global carbon emissions especially coming from coal powered energy plants. Practically, existing coal plants are expected to be wound down gradually, not to talk of building new ones.

Does it mean that Madam Kemi doesn't understand the English in that Agreement?
Christianity EtcRe: Another Gospel: The Benny Hinn Experience by cecegorz(m): 5:00pm On Sep 25, 2016
TheSixthSense:
'For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and produce great signs and omens, to lead astray, if possible, even the elect. Take note, I have told you beforehand...' (Matt 24:24-25)

One of the first books I got, after the Lord's gracious salvation of my life, was the bestseller 'Good Morning Holy Spirit' by Benny Hinn. A great read at the time, I was fascinated by his knowledge about things of the Spirit and God and his path to experiencing the Holy Spirit even to conversational relations. I watched his sermons, I ignored comments about him being a heretic. I thought why people so judgemental especially christians, what is he possibly doing wrong? He preaches Jesus and the Holy Spirit and he even talks about casting out demons in Jesus name. He explains angels and God's relationship with them as though he had some divine revelation from the Holy Spirit Himself. I liked his book and certainly respected him as a preacher and a 'man of God.'

Then came a time when he came around to my city at a RCCG parish. I determined to go see him, even if it meant forfeiting my church service for his scheduled miraculous service. I had been praying for a miracle so I thought my moment had finally arrived. So, I went. Praise and worship was fantastic and colourful, way more appealing to the congregation than that of my church. Service carried on until Benny arrived, celebrated as he was ushered in then he began his sermon with 'whoow I feel the anointing' He went on to talk about the crucifixion of Jesus Christ taking us through the torturous ordeal of the cross along with the more than occasional sedating musical tune from his music crew.

'Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows...But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; And by His stripes we are healed (Isa 53:4-6) echoed through the speakers. Then, people gradually started coming out to give testimonies of their healing. 'My back pain for several months gone' 'My ankle pain gone' 'My arthritis gone' ...'My wrist pain gone' almost every healing seemed to be about pain. All the while, right in front of me was a row of people sat on wheelchairs, expectant for their healing. In fact, I'm sure almost everyone in the service required some sort of miraculous intervention. I thought maybe God hasn't remembered me or maybe I didn't have enough faith to receive my healing. I thanked God anyway for the service and the others.

Then came the moment that shook me. They had earlier passed envelopes with forms for credit card debit information for giving. So, Benny went ahead beseeching us to say and proclaim 'The wealth of the sinner must come to me.' (I thought what a dishonest desire to proclaim. What's my own with the sinner's money). He said Kenneth Copeland gave him a prophetic declaration at the beginning of the year that any covenant sowing with him would be exceedingly fruitful. He went ahead to give us a rundown of how Abraham, Isaac, Moses, Joshua and all sowed in obedience and they reaped exceedingly. He gave examples of how someone's financial debt was cleared from obedience and on with a couple of other examples. Then, he went personal. He asked a woman, 'how much do you pay monthly for your mortgage?' she said about a thousand then he said 'the Lord wants you to give a month's worth and watch what the Lord will do.'

As he continued, I noticed for the first time in my christian life that I completely switched off, very unusual but I could feel it - Quenching of the Spirit, maybe - But I silently prayed 'Lord, you know my heart, it is not even because of money that I am here and I really don't understand this money thing' Then it hit me, it is one Spirit, if God will heal me He will do it wherever I am through the His Spirit that is within. I don't even have to attend another church. So, I left quite confused but with the empty envelope. I was tempted to try sowing with a little but I waited and just prayed about it.

But, thank God for that experience because it made me to stop reading his book and any other I had planned and went directly to the bible and occasionally articles from John Piper's desiringgod.org and I noticed the world of difference between spirit-edifying bible-based teaching and what the 'prosperity word-of-faith hypergrace' people preach.

So, what is the false gospel of Benny Hinn?
There are so many articles about Benny Hinn. From asking for Katherine Kuhlman's anointing at her grave to unbiblical revelations about God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. I had thought maybe Benny Hinn changed or lost it along the way because anyone who would encourage his church to read the whole bible couldn't be so bad right? His book talked about the lost emphasis on holiness by the church even then and it's not all garbage. There is rather some things to learn from his book.

But as I continue to read the bible, I discover that these deceptive practices contradict the life and teaching of Jesus Christ and His apostles and it is in fact, another gospel and definitely not of our Lord Jesus Christ. The money-loving lifestyles of Benny Hinn and his friends do not conform with the standards of 1 Tim 3:3 and Tit 1:7.

This teaching was made popular by the freemason Oral Roberts and it has invaded Africa to the point where people associate the gospel and Jesus Christ to these men of the occult. The history of the movement is quite interesting and relatively recent.

On a light note, here's a conversation about private jets by gods of men:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AdH2DGSXjss

Another thing, Benny Hinn's miraculous 'slain in the spirit' and 'drunk in spirit' is similar to kundilani yoga spirits that give ecstatic feelings to the possessed. It's worse with Bill Johnson and his Bethel Church version of holy spirit. I have come to notice that the cliche 'birds of a feather flock together' cannot be any truer. These guys visit Nigeria and mingle with their allies in the deception of God's people. For the nigerian pastors, I give a benefit of doubt that some are actually sincere in propagating deceptive doctrines.

Imagine if Bill Gates, Zuckerberg and the rich others were to attend these churches, what would they preach? to sow seeds? for what then? how to make money? Or talk about pastor's money story?

The gospel of Jesus Christ is for everyone, the rich, poor, broken, healed, sick and well. It is about the finished work of salvation for victory over sin and death provided for in the blood of atonement. The message is simple and truth and it has continued to transform lives from the days of the apostles. There is power in salvation and it is usually a testimony.

The bible says those who reject and do not love the truth to be saved, God would give them a delusion so that they would believe a lie so that they would be condemned. (2 Thes 2:9-12).

What then is the truth?
'Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth...And for their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they also may be sanctified by the truth[/b] (John 17:17,19)

Someone said let's not limit God. True, but I'd rather limit God to His Word that would never pass away than not limit Him to His Bible than be exposed to demonic practices and doctrines in the name of pastor, prophetic revelation and signs and wonders of men and worse believing another gospel.

The truth is the Word of God. The Bible is sufficient. Sola Scriptura. Be like the Bereans who searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so. (Acts 17:11) To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because there is no light in them (Isa 8:20)

Get Saved and Get Sanctified with the Word!!!
One question brother- If you were healed along the many others, as you eagerly anticipated in that meeting, would you have still the same perception about Pastor Benn?

platinum, palladium and rhodium,.So at that he just did the more you look the less you see.
PLZ buy another cat converter for your car.
No way I'm buying a new cat in this economy. A quick Google gives costs at approx $1500, with delivery is like 700k.

Second option is the Tokunbo version from Ladipo, which shelf life you Can't determine, as it may also fail within the shortest possible time.

Until there's another reasonable alternative, I'm OK as it is.

Sorry, may be reconstruction is not the appropriate word.
What the panel beater did was cut open the canisters and remove the cats inside, then constructed some flat plates with multiple bores and placed them in stead of another cat. So effectively there's no more cats inside the canisters.

The car is Toyota Highlander.
One of the cats is closer to the engine, the 2nd one at the middle and the 3rd one close to the silencer.

Then a colleagues 2001 Peugeot 406 and then another 2003 Camry.

I suspect it is the leaded fuel we use here. But I hope Siena and Gazzuz and Kingreign can come here and let's jawjaw on this.
I wouldn't think our fuel is culpable, my other car has done over 5 years with me and the Cat never gave any sign of malfunction.

Car TalkConsequences Of Failed Catalytic Converters by cecegorz(op): 8:37am On Sep 15, 2016
I just had an experience with my car last week, and I thought to share for people to update their knowledge.
This experience cost me about a 100k only.

The car had never stalled in about 2 years since I bought it, only goes for regular maintenance services, so when I noticed it stalling on that Tuesday morning, I didn't hesitate to take it to the mechanic, amidst dying and restarting a couple of times along the way.

The mech first scanned the ECU and came up with codes about the catalysts, ignition coils and injection systems clogging, started by servicing the injection, changing coils and plug and yet no respite. So he lifted the car, went under and saw the whole exhaust system red hot as the engine was running, so he dismantled the whole stuff and discovered the 3 catalytic converters has been blocked, thus the engine couldn't breathe!
That was what put the whole system under pressure with collateral damages in the engine.

Consequently, engine got a cracked valve, bad gaskets and all.
Ultimately, the car spent 1 week in the shop and dug a 100k hole in my wallet.
I have uploaded the receipt of spare parts bought and replaced for mechanics in the house to review.
Car TalkRe: Explaining Catalysts And Catalyst Codes by cecegorz(m): 2:39pm On Sep 13, 2016
nissparts:
Continued:

When your vehicle has a catalyst issue, there are 2 alternative fixes

1. Replace the catalyst with a brand new unit(Note I said brand new unit. If you attempt a tokunbo replacement, you'll either get one which has been filled with the "ladipo" element in the exhaust pot or you'll get one fresh off a used vehicle which may have also failed as well)

2. Hollow out the exhaust pots and rid them completely of the foamy/netty substance inside them. Now because your car's computer has been programmed to accept a certain level of exhaust fumes to be detected by the monitoring o2 sensor, the consequent rush of exhaust fumes which it will detect in the absence of the foamy/netty substance will signal a red flag and you will get catalyst codes. Therefore to complete the fix, you must install an oxygen sensor spacer to limit the fumes seen by the monitoring o2 sensor. See attached. The spacer is screwed into the oxygen sensor before finally being screwed into the exhaust.

Whichever route you take out of the 2 options, a "self-learn reset" (google it) must be carried out to get maximum benefits from the repair.

Cheers
Dude!
As we type now, I have a bill of over 100k waiting for me at the mechanic.
It happened that last Tuesday, the car all of a sudden started stalling with no prior incident, I managed it to the mechanic, with intermittent stop and starts on the way.
Mech swung into action after scanning, happened that the blocked cat has already created heated/broken valve, spark plugs, gaskets, distribution coil and all kinds of issues.
It took him about a week to dismantle all these and listed items for purchase and bill. I gave him 80k to commence work, on my way there now to get updates as he promised the car will be roaring back to life this evening.

I'm especially happy with the idea of using an O2 sensor spacer after hollowing out the cat and welding back as revealed in this thread. I'll discuss it with the Mech when I get there, as I can't imagine increasing fuel consumption at this critical time.

@Fanex maybe spot on. @Tokyobulls is quite optimistic!
I would suggest you do UBER only if driving it yourself, or happy with conclusion below:

Based on data here:

Assume 2010 toks Camry bought at 2million.
Estimated average gross earning: 100K per week, after Uber charges.

Average driver salary: 20% of gross 100K = 20K p/w
Fuel: 30K p/w
Toll, Data, Carwash: 10K p/w
Maintenance: 10K p/w

Depreciation (inflation included):
A=P((1+i)n x i)/((1+i)n - i)
On 2million, 4yrs, inflation 17% - i.e. i/mth=0.01317
The Depreciation per mth = 57K per mth = 15K per wk.

TOTAL=20+30+10+10+15=85K per wk.

-----------------------------------------------------------
PROFIT = 100K-85K = 15K per wk = 60K per mth = 720K per yr.

CONCLUSION:
What this means is that in 4yrs time (2020), you would have earned 2.88 million, and will have a newly bought 2014 toks Camry (depreciation savings)!!
Your analysis looks so sweet on paper, the downside is that this 2010 Camry cannot maintain this weekly delivery for 4 straight years.
With the intense firing of the Engine non-stop and constant engagement with other road users in Lagos, i think the car can only deliver this premium for a maximum of TWO YEARS!
In the subsequent two years, it will be spending more time at the mechanic workshop, thus halving the expected income.

This is no longer an inflation but hyperinflation. => 87.3% increase within 1 Yr ?. embarassed
Nice one bro.
The YoY analysis puts the super increasing inflation into proper tangent.
Looking at just the June headline of 16.% looks mild, in as much as i know it's a conservative figure.

I can imagine with 14% MPR, by the time banks adjust lending rates upwards, many more borrowing businesses will just DIE for failure to meet up with their debt obligations.
This is really the time for people to tighten their belt, it's gonna be a long long rough ride ahead...
PoliticsRe: 70% Of June Allocation From Non-oil Sector – FIRS Chairman Tunde Fowler by cecegorz(m): 9:25am On Jul 26, 2016
Before we start rejoicing over 500bn June allocation, the question should really be how much is US dollars was accrued compared to previous months.
This sum might just be as a result of the devalued Naira that makes the money look so big.

Simple math : $2bn converted at the rate of N197/$ in the previous months would give N394 billion, while the same $2bn in June after devaluation of Naira to N285/$ will give N570bn.

In simple terms, they just shared an inflation-induced 'increase' in allocations. By the time you take that same money to the market, you'll face the reality.

Lol. You can check their website and contact them on the numbers you find there. You can also find room rates there (it's btw 45k-300k).The charter boat was 80k/return trip. However, you can take a day trip and come back to town if you don't want to spend the night. It's just 15mins from Victoria Island. I would have included the link but not sure i'm allowed to do that here.
Wow... lovely smiles like sunshine you got in that last pic.

But then, that back view where you are on the walk way is worth a million bucks wink

I also wanted to go to Inagbe last month but decided to google up customers reviews, then I had to cancel every plan I've made.
Reviews were terrible as some people complained that most facilities are dilapidated, from smelly rooms to non-flowing water, to non-functional toilets to badly tasting foods.

I don't mind giving it a try if you can confirm they've improved on the facilities.
Also, is this a recent visit? this June?
You didn't leave any link to your blog?

This is a very important write I have actually being looking for a thread like this.
I would like to state my problem, I drive a BMW 3 series 2001-2002 model and when I purchased my car the air conditioning system was perfect but now I noticed when I use the system cold air comes out only from one vent at the centre while the other vent brings out warm air.
Also when I use it for a while the vent stops to produce this cold air and would require I turn off the system for a while and turn it back on.
I visited and a supposed expert and without any test highlighted in your write up just tried to fill in gas and concluded the compressor was bad, as it was not able to produce sufficient pressure.
I strongly disagreed with him, simply because it worked quite fine but after a while it shuts down.
So please what would you prescribe could be the fault.
Thank you
Most of these 'Oga I will refill the gas' technicians are quacks and crooks.
If you are in Lagos and need a quality diagnosis/fixing of the AC, just call Chris on 0803 818 2838

You have to be able to back up all these promises (that's what money is: promise to deliver value to the bearer).

The first issue with printing out money is inflation: everybody may have paper money, but the supply of tomatoes has not increased. All you'll do by printing more money is that the price of the available tomatoes goes up, as the seller will want to sell to the person who wants to give the most money. When the seller wants to go to the bank to deposit the cash, he may find that transport has gone up, since the number of taxis has not increased. When taxi driver then goes to buy fuel, he may find that fuel has also gone up, since there has not been an increase in fuel supply. Fuel seller goes back to the market to find that tomatoes has gone up again this week. As this goes round and round, you'll have the current situation in Zimbabwe.

The second issue is that we cannot fool the world into loaning us money if we're not being more productive or making things of value (this is the privilege of a certain country whose currency is presently the world's trading currency, but arguably that position has been earned over the past century and half. Now if you're that country and you feel like pumping your contracting economy (and by extension saving the world economy from collapsing) by increasing the money supply, you'll find that there are people who will buy your promise for a small fee (interest), based on your previous history of paying/honoring your promise over time.

Since Nigeria does not plan to increase the supply of goods and services, and since it has really terrible trust in the global scene, it has no business printing more currency
The only useful QE I can foresee from third world countries is to go gangsta on the USD!

Don't bother printing your local currency as productivity is too low to absorb the inflation shcocks.

Print USD and use it to service all the external debt obligations.

Print USD and use it to fund solid infrastructure development like modern fast rails, public water works, power plants and the rest.

Finally, be ready to deal with the CIA and the repercussions if your tracks get traced.

All these idiots are blaming and concocting conspiracy theories just because a vigilant citizen blew the whistle on Lai Mohammeds thieving arse?

Instead of them to give the whistle-blower a reward, the utterly corrupt brown-envelope induced junk journalists from Thenation are writing nonsense.
Why will a govt that is touting belt-tightening to her people whose belt had already been tightened by untold hardship they unleashed on them, turn around and be requesting 13 million naira for a single trip to China on a jamboree?

It is clear that PDP is corrupt but APC is fantastically corrupt!

Demola has always been a very brilliant and clear thinking young man, I wish he goes ahead to a higher leadership position.

He puts Joe in his place - arse licking for his APC masters. If the only thing Joe Igbokwe has to offer in this Nigeria's political discuss is to verbally urge Buhari to take a bloody war to the doostep of a whole region, just because a few elements were causing havoc, I bet Joe Igbokwe will sell his children for a morsel of meat when hunger strikes him.

Since I upgraded my S4 then to Lollipop and the ensuing crashing that followed eh...

Not sure I will ever upgrade any Android OS, any phone I buy now will live and die with it's own factory OS.

It's clear that Android hardly tests their new OS extensively before pushing to consumers to mess up and crash their devices.
