Politics / Some Grandpas Are Rapists – Martha Udom Emmanuel, Akwa Ibom First Lady by Celcius: 11:41am On Oct 01, 2017
THE wife of the governor of Akwa Ibom State, Deaconess Martha Udom Emmanuel, speaks on her pet project, Family Empowerment and Youths Reorientation Path-Initiative (FEYRep).

Your pet project, FEYRep, what is it all about?

Let me start with empowerment. In two years, I can proudly say that we have empowered more than 2,000 women. We have built 20 houses for widows and widowers, and empowered scores of youths. I cannot remember how many students whose school fees we have paid. In the medical area, many people have benefitted from FEYRep.

Akwa-Ibom Firstlady, Martha Udom Emmanuel
We helped several people to go to India for surgeries that could not be handled in Nigeria. We also arranged surgical operations for indigent people with severe eye ailments. Some of the victims were almost going blind but through the intervention of FEYRep, in collaboration with MTN, they can now see. FEYRep has done a lot in two years by the grace of God.

What motivated you to reach out to families with multiple births?

You can imagine somebody who has only one child, how difficult it is to take care of that child not to talk of a mother that gave birth to two or three. So, in my passionate way, I extend my hand of help to them. From time to time, I call the women out and talk to them on how to take care of their children and themselves.
At the end of it all, we empower them because they need to be able to take care of their children. It is not enough to say ‘take this and buy food’. It is better to teach people how to fish than to give them fish.

Are the physically challenged/disabled persons also benefiting from your programmes?

FEYRep is all-encompassing. The physically challenged persons are not left out. We also interacte with them, and so many of them have been empowered by FEYRep. For some of them who had acquired skills and needed assistance to enable them establish businesses, we have done that. We have given help to some who are in school.
Even some that needed wheel chair, we have them. There was one that was into shoe mending and I was so impressed with the fact that he had focus. But he didn’t have tools, so we gave him wheel chair and provided him with what he needed to succeed in his career.

Youths are major beneficiaries of FEYRep programmes. What message do you have for them?

My concern about today’s youths is that they want things fast. They want quick things. Many of them do not want to go through the stages of development. If you see somebody coming out of school, he wants to compete with somebody in a certain position without knowing how that person got to that position. It is worrisome. And everybody now wants to make it through politics. But I keep telling them that politics is not a profession. You can be in a profession and still do politics so that, at the end of the day, you will have something to fall back on. My advice to youths is that they should not lose focus, and try to attain their potentials.
They should use their heads to work instead of looking for quick money. When you want something very fast, you may get it but it will come to an end very fast. But when you take your time and labour to do something, it will last. So I encourage our youths, ‘Rise and do something with your heads. Don’t allow anybody to deceive you’.

What is your response to the seeming increase in rape cases in the state?

There is no society that is devoid of crime. You cannot eradicate crime, but you can reduce the level. And I can tell you that there is a reduction in the level of crime in Akwa Ibom. Before now, women were not talking about rape cases. So a child will be raped, and the mother will not allow the child to talk about it because of stigmatisation or intimidation by the person that raped the child. But we have been sensitising women, talking about it, telling them to voice out, going around schools, emphasising our theme, ‘Girl, uphold your dignity’.
I can confidently tell you that when a girl is raped now, she will pick up the telephone and call FEYRep that ‘this is what has happened’. The mother will pick up the telephone and call FEYRep that her daughter has been raped. We have some cases we are handling now.
The culprits will be put behind bars while the victims will be taken to hospital for treatment. Very soon we are going to do a walk against rape so that the whole state will know that we frown at the heinous act. And I know it will come to an end because by the time we start dealing with the culprits the way they should, prospective rapists will learn and stay away from the crime.

Has your office secured any convictions?

Yes. In the last three months, the cases we had were so pathetic because of the people that were involved. I don’t know why a man will rape a six-year-old girl; I don’t know why a man will rape a three-year-old girl. I don’t know why a man with four wives will rape a 9-year-old girl. I want to assume these people are animals and they have been convicted as I speak because we followed them till the end. And I told my staff that very soon we are going to show them on television for everybody to see. All the while they have been hiding. This time we are going to show them the way they are because it is getting out of hand.
These are people that have children; some have grandchildren. Why do you defile a young girl? What pleasure are you looking for? If I have my way, I know what I can do to such people, but I cannot take the law into my hands. But I want to assure that more rapists will be convicted and rape must come to an end in this state.

Considering the difficult times we are in, what is the source of funding for these life touching projects?

People support this organisation voluntarily. We have so many bodies, when they see our work, will call us and say they are supporting FEYRep. Some even help in kind. So many organisations support FEYRep because they have seen that we are genuine. So we are doing what we are doing through the support of philanthropists and non-governmental organisations. There is no budget for FEYRep; there is no budget for the office of the wife of the governor, so I survive by the mercy and love of the people that have seen the good work that we do.

Politics / 57 Years After, The Unresolved Issues by Celcius: 9:23am On Oct 01, 2017
Like any new system, Nigeria faced some inevitable teething troubles at the early stages of the amalgamation that birthed the country. The early problems bordered mainly on fears and suspicions of domination by the various nationalities that peopled the southern and northern protectorates, which were brought together in 1914 by the British colonialists to form Nigeria.

Prior to independence in 1960, the country’s founding fathers saw the need to negotiate a political and economic system that would address the concerns of the different regions and peoples. The negotiations produced the 1960 Constitution, which was generally anchored on the principles of independent development, healthy competition, and mutual respect among the federating units. The 1963 Republican Constitution tried to consolidate the budding societal equilibrium.

But the military, like a bull in a china shop, shattered the developing social balance. The military interventions in politics from 1966 increasingly destroyed the principles upon which the country was founded by bullying everyone into a pseudo-federal socio-political and economic system it had hurriedly cobbled together. The result was the return and amplification of many of the initial problems that troubled the country, and which the founding fathers had tried to solve with the 1960 and 1963 constitutions.

Today, 57 years after independence, Nigeria is still struggling with the national questions. Key among the unresolved issues are:

CONSTITUTION
Since 1914, when the Colony and Protectorate of Southern Nigeria was merged with the Protectorate of Northern Nigeria to form the Colony and Protectorate of Nigeria, the country has operated nine different constitutions. Yet, it has continued to be in obvious and urgent need of an acceptable constitution.

The 1914 Constitution was the amalgamation document that set out the basis for association between the southern and northern parts of Nigeria. It defined the powers and limitations of each side in the new union. It was followed by the 1922 Clifford Constitution, which introduced the electoral principle in Nigerian politics; 1946 Richard Constitution that tried to increase the participation of the indigenous peoples in the determination of their own affairs; 1951 Macpherson Constitution, which introduced the federal legislature, the House of Representatives; 1954 Lyttleton Constitution, which introduced a fully federal system in the regions and Southern Cameroons; 1960 Independence Constitution; 1963 Republican Constitution; 1979 Constitution, which introduced the presidential system of government; and the 1999 Constitution. The 1989 Constitution, which was to usher in the Third Republic, was stillborn, as the democratic dispensation was aborted by the military.

Major constitutional conferences preceded the making of the pre-independence federal constitution of 1954 and post-independence constitutions of 1960 and 1963, making them popular and generally more acceptable. But the 1979 and 1999 constitutions are products of military-supervised constitution drafting committees and constituent assemblies that many believe lacked adequate representation and freedom to really represent the views of the people.

Thus, the introductory words of the 1999 Constitution, which say, “We the people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria… Do hereby make, enact and give to ourselves the following Constitution,” have continued to generate controversy.

INDIGENESHIP
The I960 Constitution introduced provisions for acquiring Nigerian citizenship, and subsequent constitutions have made provisions for citizenship and the rights of the Nigerian citizen. Chapter III and Chapter IV of the 1999 Constitution specify the rights and privileges of the citizen. But the unwritten tradition of indigene/settler relations across the country, originating from the multicultural, multi-religious, and heterogeneous nature of the Nigerian society, has continued to conflict with those liberties. Perhaps, there is nowhere that the illogicality of the unitarist and centralist principles being foisted on the country’s accepted federal system more obvious than in the area of citizenship rights. While the federal constitution defines who the citizen is and spells out his rights and duties, the subnational governments redefine these rights in line with their respective customs and traditions, causing conflict.

CENSUS
Nigeria has a long history of census, though, controversy has surrounded the issue of the country’s population. The first census was conducted in 1866 and it was followed by the censuses of 1871, 1881, 1891, and 1901. While the earlier censuses were restricted to the Lagos Colony and its environs, the 1871 census marked the beginning of decennial census in Nigeria. It followed the decennial tradition of the British colonial masters. Tax records and other vital statistics were used as basis for the population enumerations, until 1941, when the Second War prevented the population count. The incomplete nature of the data used to determine the censuses made the exercises fundamentally defective.

The 1952 census represented the first modern census in Nigeria. Other censuses were conducted in 1962/63, 1973, 1991, and 2006. The country’s population is currently put at 182 million by the National Population Commission. NPC says this is based on the 2006 population figure of 140 million.

Many have, however, disputed the population figures, with critics dismissing census exercises in the country as based largely on negotiation and manipulation for political and economic reasons – rather than honest enumeration.

RELIGION
Religion has remained a hot topic in Nigeria. Though, the country’s constitution prohibits state religion, stating explicitly in Section 10, “The Government of the Federation or of a State shall not adopt any religion as State Religion,” the various tiers of government have engaged in religious activities that have seemed to cause controversy. One major example is the federal and state governments’ involvement in the sponsorship of religious pilgrimages. There seems to be no clear demarcation yet of the limits of government’s involvement in religion.

FEDERALISM
The 1954 Constitution firmly entrenched federalism and regionalism in the country and instituted the fiscal base of the federating units through the localisation of the marketing boards. The constitution formed the foundation for the 1960 and 1963 constitutions. But the advent of military regimes, with their central command structure, distorted that federal structure and replaced it with a centrist pseudo-federal system that has continued to be a source of tension. Many people and groups from different parts of the country have demanded the restructuring of the country with a view to bringing back the principles of fiscal federalism and resource control by the federating units.

STATE CREATION
The creation of states has remained a contentious issue in Nigeria, which no democratic government since independence has been able to successfully tackle. The 1946 Constitution introduced a tripartite structure of federating units. The Western, Eastern, and Northern regions were retained until 1963, when the Midwestern Region was added. On May 27, 1967, the military government of General Yakubu Gowon divided the four regions into 12 states. The military regime of late General Murtala Mohammed brought the number to 19 when it created additional seven states on February 3, 1976. On September 3, 1987, then military president Ibrahim Babangida created Akwa Ibom and Katsina states to bring the number of states to 21. Babangida created nine more states on August 27, 1991 to make the total number of states 30. On October 1, 1996, the military regime of the late General Sani Abacha created six more states to make the current figure of 36 states.

The country is currently organised into six geopolitical zones and 36 states, with each of the zones having six states, except South-east and North-west, which have five states and seven states, respectively. There is a growing demand for at least one more state in the South-east for the sake of equity.
Generally, there has been an unremitting agitation for more states in different parts of the country.

NIGER DELTA
The people of the Niger Delta have been at the forefront of the struggle for true federalism based on the principles of fiscal federalism, resource control, and environmental justice. They have generally believed that the diverse nationalities that make up the country can only coexist successfully and peacefully on the foundation of a clear restructuring of the federation anchored on the above principles. The issues of fiscal federalism, resource control, and environmental justice have formed the main subject of the demands of the Niger Delta since the time of the Henry Willinks Commission in 1957. The commission had been set up by the exiting colonialists to examine the fears of domination and exploitation expressed by minority tribes in different parts of the country.
Series of conferences have been held on the Niger Delta question, but none has produced the desired solution to the problems of the region.

Various interventions in the form of revisions of the derivation principle, establishment of the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs, Niger Delta Development Commission, and the Amnesty Office under the Presidency have failed to calm the agitations in the region. This is amid allegations of corruption by key political leaders in the Niger Delta and deliberate attempts to cripple the various intervention agencies in the region through starvation of funds. There is a groundswell of suspicion that the interventions measures are merely meant to placate the people to allow a smooth flow of petrodollars from the region and not born of a sincere attempt to develop the region.

Jobs/Vacancies / 5 Differences In How Male And Female Recruiters Evaluate Candidates by Celcius: 8:33pm On Sep 29, 2017
Ever wonder whether male and females recruiters evaluate candidates equally? According to Jobvite 2017 Recruiter Nation Report , men are more visual when it comes to evaluating talent, while women more often judge on credentials.
Here's what the study found:

Male recruiters (30%) tend to pay more attention to appearance/personal style than females (23%) and enthusiasm (66% vs. 60%).

Male recruiters (29%) are more likely than female recruiters (22%) to disqualify a candidate because they are dressed too casual for an interview.

Male recruiters are significantly more likely (32%) to look at candidates’ photos before meeting them than female recruiters (20%).

Male recruiters (12%) are more likely to be negatively influenced by selfies on social media than female recruiters (5%). The study also looked at recruiter attitudes about job candidate's use of selfies and social media .

Female recruiters (25%) are more likely than male recruiters (18%) to care about a candidate’s college major and references (35% vs. 29%).

“This is a reminder that not every recruiter is looking at the same thing,” says Jobvite CEO Dan Finnigan. “You can’t assume the only thing that matters is what you say on your application and on resume.”

The overarching message to job seekers? Don’t let your guard down. Be prepared for recruiters who are evaluating whether your credentials match up against the job description and who will judge you on how you handle yourself in the interview, Finnigan says. “It’s a healthy reminder that anything you do or say can be held against you in the court of job recruiters.”

Make sure you are detailing your style to be well received by your audience, says Rachel Bitte, chief people officer at Jobvite. “Be aware of who you are meeting with and adjust accordingly,” she suggests.

For instance, what you wear and how you carry yourself in a meeting with a recruiter would be different if you were applying for a job in the tech industry, which is a bit more relaxed and causal, versus the manufacturing industry, which is a bit more traditional, she says.

The study also looked at the differences between millennial recruiters and recruiters older than age 50.
Here’s what the study found:

Millennial recruiters put more emphasis on conversation skills and enthusiasm.
Recruiters older than 50 emphasize the candidate’s knowledge of the industry and appearance.

Older recruiters put much more weight on personal style and grooming when assessing whether someone is a cultural fit than millennial recruiters.

Recruiters over 50 are also much more likely to disqualify a candidate for bringing a beverage or food to the interview or because they had bad hygiene.

Younger recruiters may be more literal in how they evaluate the candidate and their resume, Finnigan says, while more experienced recruiters might rely more on their instincts. “There is no perfect word or search term that will get you the job,” he says. “You’re going to have to get yourself the job.”

Politics / Buhari Writes Paul And Peter: The Unity Of P-square Is Non-negotiable by Celcius: 7:36am On Sep 29, 2017
Dear Paul and Peter,

I have just been informed that one of you unilaterally announced the ‘split’ of the crisis-prone P-Square. That’s an act of self-determination. It is treasonable and worthy of classification as terrorism .

I recall that your late mother paid me a visit at my Daura home a couple of years ago. We shared dinner and discussed late into the night. And we agreed that the unity of P-Square would forever remain non-negotiable.

My aides told me that you 'separated' sometime last year, tasted uneventful solo musical careers, reconciled, and went back to making great music. I missed the story. Nigerian newspapers conspired to leave me in the dark by not doing cartoon impressions of the development. But you can’t try that secessionist stunt on my wide-awake watch.

You were made a group by fetal amalgamation. You were created twins. Your unity is a settled matter.

I am aware that your relationship has been dogged by rancor, discord and spite for a long while. You barely manage to function as one singing unit. Yet, you must endure the attrition and accept that you have been trapped by fate. You must continue to collaborate and conjure love songs from your shared bitterness.

None of you can go his separate way. You must stay together even though your group can hardly agree on anything except that you both mutually resent each other and can’t address the root cause of the contention.

I am told both of you are talented dancers. You must quickly return to the normal of hostile partnership. You don’t want my troops to teach you a lesson in Python Dance.

Muhammadu Buhari (GCFR)

Politics / Fr. Mbaka Is Sabotaging Biafra Agitation, He Will Be Banished By Biafran Govt by Celcius: 10:39am On Sep 27, 2017
A leader of the Biafra Zionist Federation, Benjamin Onwuka, has said that Biafran government would soon banish Rev. Fr. Ejika Mbaka

- He said that Mbaka is sabotaging the Biafra agitation

- Onwuka also noted that the agitators have labelled Mbaka as the enemy of Biafra

A leader of the Biafra Zionist Federation, Benjamin Onwuka, has said the 'Biafran government' would, when fully functional, banish the founder of the Adoration Ministry, Enugu, Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka, from “Biafraland.”

Punch reports that Onwuka, who is a lawyer, recently announced the formation of a Biafra government, which included an economist, Prof. Pat Utomi; a former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Prof. Charles Soludo; and former information ministers, Prof. Jerry Gana, and Mr. Labaran Maku.

NAIJ.com gathered that there wre reports that the Department of State Services was investigating those named in the “cabinet” but Onwuka has insisted that the government was “intact” and awaiting recognition by the United States America.

Speaking in Enugu on Tuesday, September 26, Onwuka said Mbaka and some other clerics were sabotaging the agitation for Biafra.

He said his “Biafran government” would send such clergymen away from Biafra.

Onwuka also threatened to confiscate the Adoration Ground, the worship centre of Mbaka’s Adoration Ministry.

According to him, Biafra agitators have marked Mbaka as an ‘enemy of Biafra.’

He warned Mbaka specifically, saying, “The Zionists are warning Ejike Mbaka that he is putting his Adoration Ministry on the line.

“All the clerics supporting these killings would be sent away from here by the ‘Biafra government’ and we will take over that his Adoration Ground.

“Attacking us and calling us names is unacceptable. People are being killed every day, has any of them come out to speak against it? We have marked Mbaka as enemy of Biafra.”

He said the proscription of the Indigenous People of Biafra would not have any effect on the restoration of Biafra.

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com had previously reported that members of the southeast caucus in the Senate on Tuesday, September 26 met with President Muhammadu Buhari over pressing issues facing the zone which included Biafra agitation and marginalization.
