My brother, exactly what I had on mind for him. I have sent him multiple pms plus told him I had a business proposition for him but he refused to message me back, even with a no.

Its fine though. One day, he will realized that comments and likes can never translate to cash.
No be like that my guy grin

I do respond to emails and comments. Guess yours came at a busy time and I never got to check. You and Youngzubi are right. Who wouldn't want to make money, especially from something that comes naturally. It may be that I'm reluctant because I'm lucky not to need to pursue monitizing my passion to survive. What I need is to find more time because I don't want to get committed such that the day I'd rather go out with my friends for some odeku I have to write otherwise I fall short of a financial commitment. Works fine for me like this for now. But not ruling out giving you a call in the future wink

THE ENCHANTEUR

“Alhaji Sirika, stark n*ked, knelt on the centre table and held a calabash on his head while Mrs Agbonyibo sucked his dick.”

“Jehovah!”

“Castro, na wetin I see be dat.”

“Na jazz be dat o”

“Some kind of ritual involving sex.”

“Jesu!”

“My heart nearly stopped.”

“Did they copulate? How did Alhaji manage that with his big stomach?”

“I tell you say I nearly pass out. The speed wey I take vamoose from there. If they knew I was there do you think I’d still be alive?”

“Devilish activity.”

“You know, Castro, while we thought Evae was fine. Her mother. She was in only bra and pant. Lawd!”

“But they are perverts! Person wife and mama! To the knowledge of all, for public compound!”

“Na true.”

“I will tell my dad.”

“Tell him.”

“Something untoward is happening and I don’t understand it.”

“We will not sit around and do nothing. Otherwise we go dey here our preek go begin loss one by one.”

“God forbid.”

Alhaji Sirika opened the door to meet Agbonyibo who had timed his return to perfection. He prostrated and Alhaji picked him up. Evae also went close and gave Alhaji a hug.

“Agbon-agbon! Agbon yanky! Agbon fine boy!”

“Yes Alhaji!”

For a brief moment, their eyes locked. They did not look at each other like landlord and tenant. They looked at each other like equals.

Agbonyibo handed the Alhaji something in a black nylon bag. The bag moved. Agbonyibo tapped it and it became still. Like all the others who come out of Agbonyibo’s clutching something, Alhaji Sirika hurried to his waiting jeep.

The taxi pulled up at the magnificent Enchanteur on the Island. Maya alighted and felt giddy at the sight of the splendour. She had been impressed by Fourpoint – at the time by far the best place she had been to, but the Enchanteur…the marbled walls, the greenery and golf course. As she took it all in, two chaperones appeared by her side and led her to the underground beauty parlour.

It was a small Asian woman with a warm smile and bright happy eyes that met her. “You have been booked for a 90minutes spa session ma’am, and I’m your masseur.” It began to feel like a dream. Like something from a movie.

“I’m sorry. I mean when, how?”

“Maya. You’re the beautiful Maya. Our instruction is to treat you like a queen. Now come.”

Now she was sure she was dreaming. They led her into the opulent parlor. It started with a sauna bath and then she was given a full body exfoliation with sea salt and Indian kama oil. Then her masseur, with fingers like a magician’s performed a lymph system massage to open her body before a Swedish massage. Then she performed traditional Chinese cupping on her back to draw out toxins, followed by a full body wrap with neem black clay. By the time lotion was applied on her, Maya had fallen into deep sleep like she had not experienced before. She awoke to the smiling face of her masseur.

“You needed that, beautiful Maya.”

“Sorry. I hope I didn’t waste your time?”

“No. If you did not fall asleep than I did not do a good job.”

“How long have I been asleep for?”

“Only two hours fourteen minutes.”

Maya flew from the massage table. “I should be home by now!”

“No you shouldn’t. You are booked for a three-day stay. And I have prepared you for him.”

“For whom?”

“Mr Jonjo. He meets you at the poolside restaurant in fifteen minutes. Please change into these” She handed Maya a black thigh-length sleeveless gown. “You are the most beautiful girl I have seen in Nigeria. He will never consider another when he puts his hands on you now.”

“Gentlemen, the other day Buhari flagged off his campaign in Uyo.”

“Why did he choose Uyo? Why didn’t he do it in Zamfara so that they shoot his dry ass.”

“They say the killings in Zamfara is politically motivated. The governor asked that the federal government declare a state of emergency in the state. He knows that if they do that, there will be no election there. APC do not want an election in the state because it does not have a candidate for the governorship election following the party’s faceoff with INEC.”

“So they kill, maim, kidnap because of that?”

“Yes. For power, they can do anything.”

“Atiku has promised to end the killings within weeks of being sworn in. He said he will send 30,000 soldiers to be stationed there. He said while APC sent that much soldiers to Ekiti and Ondo for elections, that he would do that to safeguard human lives.”

“Hmm story.”

“You don’t believe him?”

“They will say whatever they want to get votes. Imagine that they are still killing people before our eyes and Buhari was saying in Uyo that he has delivered on security. The way politicians lie, aswear I do not understand it.”

“Did you notice that he delivered some of his speech without prepared notes? Bubu means business this time.”

“He was not the one that delivered the speech that is why.”

“Who did?”

“Jubrin.”

“Not again!”

“We know what Bubu can do and we know what Jubrin can do.”

“That was the whole point of flagging off the campaign in a serene place like Uyo. People there would cheer everything. Where else should they have gone to? North East, Boko Haram. North West, the Zamfara killings. Middle belt, don’t even go there.”

“They could have also gone to the South East. Those ones are used to being lied to. Imagine that Boss Mustafa went there and told them to support Buhari for 2019 and Bubu would hand over to them in 2023. The following day Osibanjo went to the Alaafin’s palace and told the Yoruba to support his boss so that they will be handed over to in 2023. What kind of deception is that?”

“They are just using Osinbajo. Today he is in one place telling lies, tomorrow he is roasting boli under hot sun. The other day he entered a public barbing salon. Soon they will send him to follow LAWMA to go and pack sh*t.”

“The APC strategy sha…From the look of things, they are already telling Nigerians they will get 40 million votes. Imagine that in the last elections they won with 15 million votes. Now they said they had 19 million delegates for the primaries. And the notorious Miyetti Allah who are known killer herdsmen have promised 20 million votes! Do the math.”

“Did you hear that farmers contributed 1.7 billion naira for their campaign?”

“Farmers that cannot even afford fertilizer?”

“Ask me.”

“They seem to be overwhelming PDP. It is only Reno Omokri and Ben Bruce that are Twitting like parrots for Atiku.”

“Did you hear that Buhari’s family had majority shares in Keystone bank and Etisalat? Una Mr integrity.”

“They have come out to refute the claim.”

“Then why have those institutions failed to publish the names of its shareholders as challenged?”

“Abeg I don’t know. Me I know that Buhari owns more than the 150 cows he claims are all of his wealth.”

“Shagari is dead. He was 93.”

“Na so o. The man tried. What I don’t understand is Buhari paying tribute to him. You overthrew his democratically elected government and threw him in jail. He dies, you call him a Statesman and everything. E get as e be nau.”

“It is called politics.”

“Na wa o.”

Agbonyibo begged to leave the group. Mr Zubi addressed him.

“There is something I want to discuss with you privately Agbonyibo.”

“You can say it sir.”

“No. It is not for the council of elders. At least not yet.”

“Ok sir.”

“I will come to your room. Gentlemen” he said to the group. “Excuse me for a few minutes. I need to have a word with Agbonyibo.”

“Does Mama Willy-willy know you want to take a second wife?”

“Sharrap dia! Ewu Gambia.”

He was already at the table for two when the chaperones escorted her there. He was dressed in all white. White shirt with half the buttons open to expose his hairy chest and white trousers and a white hat.

“We are going for a boat cruise from here. I am a member of the Lagos boat club. For now, let me feed you.”

“Thanks for the body treatment and nice dress and everything. But I have to go at once.”

“But you only just got here.”

“No. I have been here more than three hours.”

Jonjo studied her.

“Okay. I will not compel you. But you should eat.” He beckoned the waiter over.

Maya checked her watch. She did not have the time for that. What if someone saw her? How could she betray Ndi like that? She thought of an excuse to leave and found it. “I need to get to the bank before they close. It’s quarter to five now. That means I have only fifteen minutes.”

“Why did you come Maya?”

“I don’t know. I was upset. I needed to get out at that moment. Please let me go.”

“My driver will take you. He will wait for you at the bank and take you home.”

“That is very kind sir but it will not be necessary.”

“Don’t be silly Maya.”

Maya thought about it. She would be carrying a huge sum of money and would need to do so safely. But how would she explain Jonjo’s car?

“You don’t need to say anything to Ndifreke if he sees you. If anything, he needs to know how quickly he would lose you if he continues to upset you.”

“He will not lose me.”

“A word of advice Maya.”

“Yes sir.”

“Never let a man feel he could never lose you.”

Maya thought about it and said “All right sir.”

“I have everything Maya. I can change your life.”

“You have done enough already sir.”

He shook his head and said “Alright then. In the event of trouble of any kind, always remember I am only a phone call away.”

“Okay sir.”

When she left, Jonjo kicked off his shoes and leaned back in the chair. It was always a matter of time. And time was one thing he had in abundance.

“Agbonyibo. Since you came to this compound, I have not had any cause to be concerned about you. Even though like everyone else I was a little taken aback by your daughter’s appearance the other day but that is okay, maybe it is the way you do those things in your place.”

“Yes sir. Na so.”

“Right. But something worries me. Please don’t be offended. My son Castro told me they saw something the day Alhaji Sirika the landlord came here.”

Agbonyibo did not flinch. The smile on his face did not fade.

“You see, it is not an easy thing to say. My son Castro is good for nothing. And his friend Irikefe is even worse. I should never take those two seriously but they swore with their lives that they saw what they claimed to see. I did not mention it at the council because it is very sensitive. I wanted to speak with you about it first.”

“Wetin dem see?”

“I cannot say it Agbonyibo. But it was not good.”

“Then forget about am. Na lie.”

Agbonyibo was still smiling. Then Mr Zubi remembered the vehemence with which Castro spoke. He had also sent for Irikefe who told him his story.

“I saw it myself sir.”

“You know this is not something you should play with. We are used to your pranks in this compound but coming up with a story like this will be taking things too far.”

“I swear with the grave of my unknown mother!”

“I will tell papa Efe.”

“You can tell him sir. I have not lied.”

Mr Zubi believed the boys, but Agbonyibo here was putting serious doubt in his mind.

“Agbonyibo. The boys saw the landlord and your wife in a compromised position, to put it mildly. You were said to have conveniently excused yourself from the room.”

“How him take see am?”

“He said he fitted a lens in your window. Actually, the window of this room when it belonged to someone else.”

“Make we go look the lens, abeg sir.”

They went out of the room and went round to the window. They both looked, Agbonyibo traced every inch of the window with his fingers and there was no lens, no opening, nothing like what Irikefe described. Mr Zubi attempted to peer through the net to see inside the room but he could not.

“You don see am now say those boys dey lie?”

“I don’t understand this Agbonyibo.”

“Come make we go back inside.”

Back in the room, Agbonyibo maintained his smile and courtesy to the chagrin of Mr Zubi.

“Well, Agbonyibo, I guess I should say sorry. The boys are never up to any good. I am happy I did not bring it up at the council of elders. I would have embarrassed your family.”

“I no dey embarrass at all. Everywhere I go, people dey talk about me. Every day, Agbonyibo do this, Agbonyibo do that, small time now you go hear another thing. But make you no mind them.”

“Alright. You are a good man. Thank you for giving me your time.”

“No problem at all. But make you never go. Eyonyam!” he called to his wife.

Eyonyam answered and entered the room and genuflected before Mr Zubi.

“Bring drink for oga Zubi.”

“Okay”

“You don’t need to worry Agbonyibo. I am not a stranger in your home. I am erm fine”

His eyes were on Eyonyam as he spoke. She had used a white shawl as wrapper and was not wearing any top. It was short and gauzy and clearly showed her panties. Agbonyibo followed his eyes and chuckled when Mr Zubi swallowed hard at the point Eyonyam bent in front of their tabletop fridge.

“Erm Mr Agbonyibo. I mean Agbonyibo, you know, erm, I should be going.”

“You don be with Togo woman before?”

“Erm what do you mean Agbonyibo?”

Agbonyibo continued to watch him. Mr Zubi stood but his knees were too weak to support him so he plumped back in the seat. He was perspiring now because he saw the shawl fall off Eyonyam’s body and he could not take his eyes off her near nudity.

“I dey come. I wan go bring something for shop.”

With that, Agbonyibo left Mr Zubi in the room alone with Eyonyam.

The Lexus RX 400 pulled up and Maya alighted clutching a black bag. She hurriedly jumped the gutter and entered the compound without giving the driver a second look. She went straight to her room and found her mother in the armchair dozing. She was alert as soon as she smelled her perfume.

“Where have you been? You left without a word! Even the Calabar boy came here.”

“Where is he?”

“He has left of course.”

Maya placed the bag she was carrying on her lap and said, “This is the money mum. Do not disappoint me.”

“Ha. But you said it was tomorrow that you were bringing it.”

“I changed my mind and went for it today.”

Mama Tobi was now on her feet. “My daughter. My jewel. Child of my youth.” Then she began to sing and cry at the same time.

“It’s okay mama. It is the least you deserve for everything you have done for me. Use it well. Create the wealth you said you will create.”

“I will create it. The Federal Government will hear of my exploits.”

“Amen.”

She watched her mother lift her mattress and put the money under it.

“First thing tomorrow morning I will go and do all I said I will do with it. One naira I will not spend on any frivolities. I have suffered enough. My life must change.”

“Indeed it must.”

Maya thought of going to look for Ndifreke but changed her mind. She switched on her phones instead. They made multiple beeping sounds once they had finished booting and she knew they were all messages from him. She ignored it all. If he really wanted to see her, he would come looking for her again.

Maya spent the rest of the evening talking with her mother. Mama Tobi had never been so happy. She told stories from her childhood and stories her own parents had told her. They spoke about everything under the sun. Then at bedtime, Mama Tobi invited Maya to share the bed with her. Tobi and Clementina slept on the floor.

The night was not different from any other night on Katakata Street. Generators still blared from all around. There were the occasional noises on the corridor when someone went to the toilet. They slept as soundly as they always did until mama Tobi sensed unusual movement in the room. As she turned to investigate, a strong hand covered her mouth and pressed her to the bed. She could not tell what was happening to Maya or her other children but she could tell that someone was searching for something around her bed. Then with the swiftness of an arrow, the intruder released her and shot out of the room before she could gather herself and turn on the light.

She rushed to where she kept the money Maya had given her and saw that it was empty.

Then she let out an earth-shattering wail.

Centino, honestly well done with this Piece you have here.
Been reading snippets here and there but decided to start from Page 1 to really know what I'm reading, just finished some hours ago and it's been a wonderful read.
So when will the Witch die?
When will Papa Efe confront Agbonovi or so.

Also, Chisco should not give his brother the cold shoulder o, will love to Akunna feel terribly bad...though this one he is staying at Wasiu room only God knows which prick Nurse Jo will prefer...

Oh, compliments of the Season to you...

Nice update Centino

But i'm a bit confused... Sorry tho

First... That scene where wasiu, ibaddan and chisco met what really transpired. Was wasiu and ibaddan attacked or they were the one shooting.
There was a cult war where Chisco was only a spectator and Ibadan a casualty. He was a street boy therefore always vulnerable.

Youngzubi:
Secondly..... Was it agboyinbo's wife that went outside with their daughter or agboyinbo himself. If i could recall correctly based on the last episode i guess the togo man is a nyash nailer grin but with this twist if not a mistake it means the family runs the business generally cos na only the wife remain inside with chief aka oga landlord.
You said it all na cheesy

REAL MEN

Because Chisco was an adept vigilante and hunter, he knew he had what it took to survive on the streets however long he needed to until he found his feet. Much was said about Lagos and how much different it was from his village in Arochukwu, but he had in his time dodged bullets and suffered knife wounds and stepped on charms and fallen from a palm tree. Risk was risk. If it came to it, death also was death irrespective of where it took place. His brother had challenged him to prove his manhood. It was a challenge he was going to embrace. Faced with life and death, Chisco knew that he would fight for his life no matter where in the world he found himself.

Living with the nurse was never an option. He knew from the first thrust that he was punching above his weight. The nurse would sooner come to her senses and kick him out. Then what?

Making love to her was good, but he still preferred his village sweethearts. They were raw and wild and smelled like real women. The nurse smelled of too much cosmetics and she washed her honey pot too much. Chisco never saw the need to interfere with nature. He liked her dearly but she was not the best lover he had had and he was not going to leave himself at her mercy because of a jealous brother.

Chisco had made friends with the market night watchmen and knew many homeless young men who slept in front of the stalls and defecated in the gutter and took their bath behind molue buses early in the morning before the first call of the muezzin. The chief watchman was sympathetic and gave Chisco a locker for his bag and allowed him to share his sleeping space on the side of the foremost supermarket close to the motor park. In the daytime he went into the market and selected clearance okrika items from bale owners which he sold by the roadside and made N10 per item. On a good day he sold up to fifty items, which ensured that he could have okpa and garri in the morning and then in the evening after the day’s hustle he had akpu and oha soup from any of the bukkas that littered the market. He maintained his positivity. He kept looking out for opportunities. He knew he would survive and thrive without Achike.

Then one morning, the motor park was rocked by gunshots and people running like what he saw in pictures of the Biafran war.

“Na cult boys!” someone said, “Run!”

“This yeye cult boys don come again. Dem no go let us get peace for this Christmas!”

The shooting continued and when it died down, a crowd gathered to see the casualties.

Three young men lay dead and seven others were in various stages of severe trauma. Chisco immediately recognized Wasiu slumped over a body and in tears. He went closer and found Ibadan, bleeding from the mouth and jerking with eyes rolled over.

“Carry am go hospital na!”

“No need. Him go die.” And as Wasiu said that, Ibadan cocked his head to one side and breathed his last.

“Sorry brother” Chisco said to Wasiu afterward, when the bodies had been cleared and some normalcy had returned to the park.

“Why you dey call me brother? Why you dey sorry for Ibadan after wetin we do you?”

“That one don pass.”

“Ibadan nearly remove your eye. And I see say the eye no too correct.”

“Ibadan don die. Me I dey alive. You don dey run like thief since. Wetin again I want?”

“You be correct man. Take five.” They did hi-fives and shared an embrace.”

“So how the compound be?”

“Everybody dey there. We don get new neighbor. Him name na Agbonyibo.”

“Which kind name be dat?”

“Dem say him come from Togo.”

“Which room dem give am?”

“Talabi room.”

“Oh.”

“E get wife and pikin. Dem fine I no go lie.”

“Eh hen?”

“The man take Talabi shop too.”

“Wetin him dey sell?”

“Dem say him dey sell animal. I never see anybody enter dia for afternoon. Na only for night wey old men wey get big nyash dey enter de shop.”

“Which one be men wey get big nyash?”

“E get as de man dey do. I dey suspect say aru dey happen inside dat shop.”

“Wetin be aru?”

“Abomination.”

“Dat one no concern me. Togo people no dey take eye see man nyash. Dem be like aboki. Make you just dey careful.”

“E no concern me. I don comot for de compound.”

“Where you dey live now?”

“I no get house. I dey sleep for outside China Supermarket.”

“Why?”

“Achike pursue me comot for him house.”

“Why?”

“Because of nurse.”

“Why?”

Wasiu kept his eyes on Chisco and when Chisco hesitated, realization hit him.

“Omo Ibo! You follow chop the ogbono!”

Chisco looked away in embarrassment but Wasiu jumped up and simulated a rear entry and pumped his waist repeatedly.

“The babe sweet gan! Hin nyash be like say dem use butter mould am. As e big na so e soft,” Wasiu said and continued his obscene gesture.

“E don do. Now I no get where to stay again.”

“Go stay for my room.”

“Ehn?”

“I go give you my key. Go stay there. Epp me beg dem make dem gree make I come back. As Ibadan don die I no fit go him house again. But if you stay there, after some days I go come back. Epp me talk to Oga Cosmas make him beg Oga Zubi for me. If you don forgive me, make dem also forgive me. Real men no dey fight on top woman.

Maya lay in bed consumed in thought. She had not spoken to Ndi in two days. Now she did not know what to make of the whole thing. Why did he hesitate to give her back her money? Why did he propose at the time he did? Could her mother have been right?

As she mulled this over she heard her phone beep. It was an SMS. Credit alert. One million naira. As she thought about it, her phone beeped again. “I still want to marry you. I hope we move on from this quickly. Is it still a yes?” Maya was not sure anymore. She stood up and went to meet her mother where she was wrapping her fufu in the corridor.

“Mum I have my money now.”

“Praaiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiise the Lord Jesus! It will not be good for the devil.”

“So what do you want? That I give it all to you?”

“Of course! I will take a proper shop at Apapa. I will employ strong boys who will be turning this fufu for me. I am getting old now and my bones are weak. I don’t want to die young.”

“How will you invest the money for proper returns? It is all I have, mum.”

“Don’t worry about that. I will do contribution with fifty thousand every month. I will buy keke and put on the road. I know some men that deal on Diesel and buy in tankers there at the wharf. If you give them five hundred thousand to put in the business, they will give you fifty thousand every month and you can withdraw your principal anytime you want. I have already contacted them. Don’t worry my daughter. I will create wealth for you. I will not wait for Atiku or Buhari. I will create wealth with my own hands.”

Maya shook her head mirthfully and started walking back to the room.

“So my angel Maya, the child of promise, child of my youth. When am I getting it?”

“I will pay into your account tomorrow if you want.”

“No o. Please bring the cash.”

“All of it?”

“Yes. All of it. What will I keep it in the bank for? So the bank owners will steal it and live lavish lifestyles while I am suffering?”

“Mama. Who told you that?”

“I know o. How did Bank PHB and Skye bank die? Why are their owners being pursued by the Law?”

“Alright. Whatever you say.”

Mama Tobi stood up, tossed the fufu basin aside, and began to sing and dance. Maya smiled and entered the room. Her phone rang as she lay on the bed. It was Jonjo.

“Good evening sir.”

“Don’t call me sir. Call me Jonjo.”

“Yes sir.”

“What do you say to my proposal?”

“I can’t go out with you sir. You know Ndi is my boyfriend.”

“I’m not asking you out for anything. You are the face of my brand. It is expected that you make public appearances with me. It is in your contract.”

“That means I can come with Ndi.”

“Yes, but not this time.”

“How can I explain that to him?”

“You don’t owe him an explanation.”

“But sir…”

“I saw the both of you the other day. You need a break.”

“I don’t think so sir.”

“You are young. You are cheating yourself out of life. There is enough time for you to dwell in the melancholy of the delusion you call love. First, explore the power of your God-given attributes, and then decide what you really want. You are unhappy right now. Whatever makes you unhappy is not good for you.”

“But sir…” Just then her other phone beeped. “It’s been two hours since I sent you your money and a message I know you have read. Don’t be like your mother.”

Her heart sank.

“Are you there Maya?” Jonjo who was still on the phone said.

“Yes I am.”

“So what do you say?”

Maya looked at Ndifreke’s message again and then said, “I’m coming.”

“Come, and let me broaden your horizon.”

“Send the Uber.”

The children and young adults pranced about. It was Christmas day. There were plenty activities in the corridor of both floors as they inhaled and got high on the sweet smell of stews and jollof rice. Mama Kike was always the first to finish cooking on Christmas day. Other mothers were in hot competition with her as her children always made a show of sitting in front of their friends and wolfing down their rice and coke and Fanta while others waited for their mothers to finish cooking. While they waited Tobi said “But Daddy freeze and Reno Omokri were saying on Twitter that we should not celebrate Christmas o!”

“Let’s go and ask Mr Cosmas.”

He was happy to receive them.

“You know I am a bachelor so tell your mothers to remember me when the food is ready.”

“We will sir. But Mama Kike has finished cooking and gave to only her children. Stingy woman!”

Mr Cosmas laughed and said, “She is only feeding her family first. Be patient. I have always eaten her rice since I came to this compound.”

“It is only you she gives.”

“Have you considered that maybe she does not want to offend your mothers by feeding you before your mothers’ food is ready? Grown-up women don’t do things without a reason.”

“You may be right Mr Cosmas.”

“Don’t be quick to judge. Remember that as you grow up.”

“Okay sir.”

“Now to the question of Christmas. No one has the right to question anyone who wishes to celebrate. If they are coming from the perspective of the Christian scriptures, then they must respect the words of the very revered St Paul in Romans 14 and Colossians 2:16. Let no man judge you in respect of meat or drink or of a holiday or new moon. Those who choose to set aside this date to celebrate are well within their rights to do so.

“Now why do we celebrate? The angel who appeared to the shepherds the night of Jesus’ birth said, “I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. We celebrate Christmas because, as the angel said, the birth of Jesus Christ is “good news.” Good news is meant to be celebrated. In fact, the angel said the news of Jesus’ birth would cause great joy and would be for all the people — the joyful celebration would be universal. People around the globe would be glad for this occasion. We celebrate Christmas by stringing lights because the Light of the world has come to us. We celebrate Christmas with gift-giving because of the indescribable gift that God gave to us. What I must however add is that we must not forget the reason of his coming as we celebrate. He came to show us the path to salvation. A path we must follow if we are to successfully traverse the darkness of this world to the safety of paradise. There is no point celebrating if in the end we lose our way.”

“Sir, they said that December 25th was a date of a pagan festival.”

“It may be true. December 25th might have been chosen because the Winter Solstice and the ancient pagan Roman midwinter festivals called Saturnalia and Dies Natalis Solis Invicti took place in December around this date so it was a time when people already celebrated things. However, the Jewish festival of Lights – Hanukkah – starts on the 25th of Kislev, the month in the Jewish calendar that occurs at about the same time as December. Hanukkah celebrates when the Jewish people were able to rededicate and worship in their Temple, in Jerusalem, again following many years of not being allowed to practice their religion. Jesus was a Jew, so this could be another reason that helped the early church choose December 25 for the date of Christmas. Whatever it may be, we celebrate the coming into the world of the greatest gift and the one event that changed the course of history. Know why you celebrate and remain steadfast, hedonism and other foul behavious at this time will only hasten your journey to eternal damnation. Please be guided my young friends.”

Later that Christmas evening the men of Katakata Street were able to finally set their eyes on Evae again. This time she wore a tshirt and wrapper and glided about like royalty and paid no attention to anyone while she carried out her chores. It was the way Agbonyibo wanted it. Let them hunger, let them strive. Nothing good comes easy. Lukman met her at the backyard. He had acquired a new hat and also spotted a gold eye patch. He now spoke in an American accent and was straight to the point.

“Evae baby, from the moment I set my eyes on the most lovely of lovelies that is you, my world has ceased to exist. It shrank into the shape of the most beautiful woman I have ever seen. You have become that world; I need you more than air, say yes to my love and witness the wonder of a love that will take you to paradise.”

“I have hear. I go give you answer in one week.”

Josiah was next. Evae was sitted in front of her father’s closed shop.

"Sweet Evae" he said. “I heard the announcement that an angel had escaped from heaven. The whole world is running helter-skelter and everyone is asking ‘have you seen the missing angel?’ I laugh when I heard that because they are all looking in the wrong place. I have the seen the angel. She is right in front of me. And with your permission I want to take her back to heaven, the heaven that is my heart, where she rightly belongs.”

“Evae looked at him in his new shorts and baseball top and said “I have hear. I go give you answer in one week.”

Mr Kingsley was next. Now Evae entered the corridor and was going to her room when he held her hand and looked into her eyes.

“Onto the sea
I sailed my boat
And prayed that it
Would stay afloat

From dawn til dusk
From dusk til dawn
In search of love
I drifted on

What happened then
I don't recall
I think it was
A sudden squall

For when I awoke
I thought I died
At the sight of an angel
At my side

But lucky for me
That was not true
For I found love
And love was you.

- Britney Brundage –“

“Oga I no know wetin you dey talk but I hear you. I go answer in one week,” Evae said.

Achike did not have time for too many words. He was the busiest in the kitchen that day. He made a pot of stew and a pot of ofe nsala and poured everything in two big bowls and knocked on Agbonyibo’s door.

“I love you I love no be for mouth. I have no time for too many words. Please accept this on this beautiful Christmas day and give your daughter to me. She will never hunger. She will never thirst.

Agbonyibo looked at Evae and nodded. Evae stood and accepted the gifts and smiled.

“I go answer in one week” she said and smiled again.

Agbonyibo took note of the fact that it was only Achike that drew a smile from his daughter.

Then they heard noises outside and Agbonyibo went out and saw that Alhaji Sirika was in the compound.

“Agbon-Agbon! Agbon-yanky, Agbon- fine boy!”

He prostrated before Alahaji Sirika.

“I hope they are treating you well in this compound?”

“Yes sir. I happy.”

To the consternation of everyone, Alhaji Sirika went into Agbonyibo’s room. Alhaji Sirika never entered the room of his tenants. He only banged the door and you will come outside and meet him.

Compound members waited and then ten minutes later, Agbonyibo and Evae came out of the room and went to sit in front of the shop but Alhaji Sirika was still inside the room.

Irikefe was the most curious of all. Agbonyibo had taken Talabi’s room. When the rumour became rife that Talabi was sleeping with Akunna’s wife, Irikefe had found a way to make a small hole in Talabi’s window and fitted a tiny lens that narrowed everything in the room. Whenever he suspected that Talabi was with Awero at night, he sneaked to the window and removed the black tape he used to conceal the lens and watched Talabi make love to Awero. There were people about that evening so he could not do that. But the curiosity was so much that he decided to take his chance. He reconnoitered the window area and watched everyone that watched him. Then the moment he saw that there were no eyes on him, he sped to the window and exposed his hidden lens and put his eye through it.

Until he left Katakata Street, Irikefe continued to wonder how he did not faint at what he saw.

Mr Comas is right, Ndi should give her the money. Love doesn't solve all problems and his love for her definitely can't solve this.
She need to trust him to an extent no one can make her believe whatever she did not want to about him and then denying her of her money because he wants to protect her is a wrong way of going about it. It would actually serve as a proof that her mother is right even when she isn't.

First of all Mr. Centino . I must confess this, after *Bukky Alakara* and *The Devil Wears Okrika* which I have read on this platform. *Katakata street* is the best of them all.
Also, the indepth analysis of Mr. Cosmas is too awesome, his balance between religion and godly life. Irikefe notorious life is also worthy to be notified and Agbonyinbo's deciphering nature is worthy of utmost curiosity.
in short keep the good work going man, you are a rare gem to this generation. By the way I don't know if you have published it. If yes how can I get the hardcopy please !!

Last weeks update was posted on Tuesday. In case you missed it, go to page 131. Happy Sunday folks.

THE CONQUEROR

Irikefe and Castro stood and watched the men fawning over Agbonyibo from a distance.

“Guy, see as you dey dem come parade your crush like goat for market square.”

“She is no longer my crush. My papa go kill me.”

“Your papa? When did you start listening to Papa Efe?”

“You no go understand.”

“You mean it?”

“There is something about that girl. I know Papa Efe. For him to block my way like that, e get wetin him know. And last night, the girl appear like ghost for my back when I go out to go piss. She wear only pant.”

“You no give am belle?”

“Gerrout.”

“Guy, abeg explain yourself.”

“I no know wetin happen. You know say I no fit see that kind thing remove eye. But the girl just change her mind and before I open my eye I no see am again.”

“Guy which kind story be dat na?”

“It happened like that.”

“And today she is being offered to all those failed bachelors. A girl of our generation.”

“Castro. The original Ewu Gambia!”

“Guy I serious. You see say Undertaker dey talk? Serves Sister Esther right. I warned her.”

“You?”

“Never mind.”

“Come Castro. Is there something I should know? When did you start warning Sister Esther?”

“She was my sister in the Lord. We crossed paths.”

“Ewu Gambia.”

“Please stop it.”

“Meanwhile see as your mama come disgrace your papa. How many strokes of cane she don give am?”

“Watch your mouth, guy.”

“No be your fault. Nothing to be ashamed of. Everybody know say Mr Zubi na woman wrapper.”

“Stop it Irikefe.”

“Imagine! A whole Chairman of the Elder’s Council! Him wife just come out come shout for him head him just run enter house! Na because of your mama him abandon him interest for Nurse Jo. Lai lai no woman fit control me like that.”

“Okay I don hear. Are you saying you are no longer interested in the man’s daughter?”

“I cannot sustain my interest. Apart from wetin my papa talk, I don dey feel somehow.”

“Is that to say that I am free to enter?”

“Enter what? You, Castro?”

“Guy you dey underrate me.”

“That your head wey dem break no do you abi?”

“That was in the past. I have grown since. I will beat these men to Evae. I want to prove myself in this compound.”

“Eh hen! You want to prove yourself.”

“Yes, my guy.”

“Ordinary JAMB you no fit pass to prove yourself. Na woman you wan carry prove yourself.”

“It may be my talent you don’t know. No be only book be the route to success.”

“So for you, success means Evae. Woman!”

“Guy, do you know that even porn actors are referred to as talents? Whatever you do, do it well.”

“You are still seeing Wasiu right? You still dey smoke igbo?”

“I’ve not seen him since he stole his things from us.”

“Then why are you talking like this?”

“I have grown. I want Evae. The only reason I slowed down was because of you. Now you say you are not in for her. Watch me surprise all of you.”

“Woman wey big pass you.”

“She can’t be more that eighteen. I am nineteen.”

“Them tell you say na age I dey talk? She resemble your size?”

“Her dad says she has not been touched by a man.”

“Ewu Gambia!”

“Stop it.”

“So you want to go and shoot porn with her?”

“That’s not what I meant. I’m only saying that my ability with Evae could be a pointer to how I can navigate through the difficulties of life. This is something I am taking seriously.”

“I can see that. So you too will go dancing for her father for her attention?”

“There has to be other ways my man. Like I said, my success here will be the beginning of Castro the conqueror.”

“Castro the conqueror.”

“Yes boss.”

Ndifreke waited the whole day and Maya did not return to him. So he picked up his phone and sent her a whatsapp message. “I am still waiting for you honey.” Her reply was “Please transfer the money to my account.” He tried to chat with her but nothing else he sent after that delivered. Her dialed her number and saw that her phone was switched off. He then went to look for Mr Cosmas.

“I know that giving her the money will be a mistake. I have no intention to keep it or misuse it. It is her first earning. She has a future to protect. Her mother is up to no good.”

“It is not in your place to decide that my young friend. That is being controlling.”

“I care for her sir. I will not watch her make such a mistake.”

“How do you know that that is not a mistake she needs to make?”

“I beg your pardon sir?”

“Let me put it simply my young friend. As trite and as the saying has become, but there are not many truer words been spoken. Experience is the best teacher.”

“That may be true. But I know this also sir. A wise man learns from his experience but a wiser man learns from the experience of others. Maya’s mother is selfish and avaricious. Nothing good ever comes out of people like that. Society is replete with such stories. She should be stronger. If she can’t be, I want to be her strength.”

“So you asked her to marry you.”

“Yes I did.”

“If this money thing did not happen, would you have asked her?”

“I was always going to marry Maya sir.”

“Was it now you wanted to propose?”

“Maybe not.”

“That can be viewed as manipulation you know.”

“Our marriage was always going to happen sir.”

“You must resist the temptation to be controlling. No matter how good your intentions are, you must let people live their lives, make their mistakes and learn from them. No one learns from the mistakes of others. Those days when we used to go to bar-beach to watch the execution of armed robbers, right there as people were being killed for stealing others still picked pockets. Everyday smokers are diagnosed of lung cancer and more and more people are taking up the habit. HIV is real but the number of abortions and baby mamas nowadays tells you that condoms are not the most popular sex accessories in town. Never try to force your good intentions on others. It always backfires. Go with the flow. Send good thoughts and prayers to a person you care about who may be doing something you do not agree with, but do not impose your will on them. Should it happen that you were right and they got into trouble as you had foreseen, be there to pick them up and never say I told you so. Everyone must pass through the crucibles and gain their own experiences for their maturing. Don’t stand in their way.”

“So I must stand and watch people I love put their hands in fire?”

“No. You can advise and admonish. But if they insist you let them be. They need the experience.”

“So I give Maya her money.”

“It’s hers not yours.”

“Her mother will waste it.”

“It is none of your business.”

“I love her.”

“Then give her her money.”

Ndifreke thought about it and then said, “It may be for the best. It’s causing so much tension. When we didn’t have any money, problem. Now we have money, bigger problem. Apart from this, everyone now behaves somehow towards us. If I didn’t know better I would call it envy.”
Mr Cosmas did not say anything. Knowing him now, Ndifreke knew he would not be drawn into that unless he was directly asked a question. It was becoming uncomfortable so he decided to change topic.

“Mr Cosmas, the other time I mentioned the blood of Jesus and you said topic for another day. I want to hear it now.”

“Do you remember the story in Matthew 27:24-25?”

“I don’t sir.”

“When Pilate saw that he was accomplishing nothing and a riot was breaking out, he took water and washed his hands before the crowd and said ‘I am innocent of this man’s blood. You shall bear the responsibility.’ And the people answered ‘His blood be on us and our children’. The first users of this phrase were the wicked ones who nailed him on the cross for the truth he brought. The fate of these people and their obstinate children is there for all to see. They are still fighting wars millennia after. They are exiled in all parts of the world. Luke tells us they were warned “But Jesus turned to them and said “daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me but weep for yourselves and your children.” (Luke 23:18)

“But what then is the significance of the blood?”

“He said to his disciples that he who absorbs his word absorbs him and eats his body and drinks his blood. He is the word that became flesh! If we accept his word of salvation and act accordingly then we have absorbed his flesh and blood and that is what saves. Invoking his blood is akin to the chants made before Pilate. Those were the chants of murder. Pilate who knew absolved himself from such infamy. Go and live his word. That is all you need for salvation.”

“But people call on the blood of Jesus and miracles happen.”

“Miracles happen because you believe. If you believe and really put your mind to it, even if you call on a table you will see miracles. Those who believe in the Law of Attraction do not call on Jesus or the blood but they get results. So for the occultists. So for the babalawos. Believe. Never underestimate the power of the human mind. Science, Noetic science acknowledges this too.”

“So it is wrong to say “The blood of Jesus.”

“You are simply beating your chest and feeling good about the callousness he suffered on the cross. Remember that on that day the elements rioted, there was earthquake. Heaven and earth abhorred the act, and He then prayed the greatest prayer of intersession ever uttered. Father, forgive them for they know not what they do. It was a crime.”

“One last question Mr Cosmas”

“Yes, friend.”

“Why do you quote parts of the Bible to buttress your point, and then at other times the evidence from your words is that you don’t believe what the scriptures say. You cannot believe in part, you either believe or you don’t believe.”

“That is a question for another day.”

Josiah ambled along the corridor. He greeted everyone that he saw at the top of his voice. He deliberately went into his room and picked up a heavy armchair and struggled to drag it through the corridor to his shop. Five minutes later he dragged the chair back, making as much noise as possible. There was no sign of Evae anywhere. He bumped into Agbonyibo and considered kissing his feet when he greeted him, but he thought the better of it. He just made sure he said his good morning the way Agbonyibo had never heard good morning being said. He saw that Agbonyibo’s smile widened and that pleased him.

“Have you had breakfat Mr Agbonyibo?”

“Yes I don chop. My wife cook akume and pates.”

“Akume and pates?”

“Yes na we Togo food. Akume na porridge wey dem make with maize flour and pates na de sauce. Na eggplant, tomatoe, fish and spinash dem dey take do am.”

“Oh I see. I have to taste that akume one of these days.”

Agbonyibo only smiled and there was a moment of awkward silence before Josiah excused himself and returned to his shop. There was no Evae.

Lukman also perambulated on the corridor hoping to catch a glimpse of Evae. He brought out his phone and began to make a call.

“I will quit this barbing business in the new year. Yes, yes. I am getting hold of twenty thusand dollars which I will use to relocate to America. Yes yes.”

He had said it at the right time because Agbonyibo was just coming from the bathroom and entering the room. He saw that Agbonyibo hesitated a beat when he mentioned the plenty dollars. But where is Evae?

Mr Kingsley decided to do his reading in the corridor. He stacked big volumes on the floor while he sat on the flood barrier in front of his door and read, his eyes scanning the corridor the entire time. Sister Esther emerged after an hour and stood in front of him.

“So this is where you sit and read now Kingsley?”

“When distractions are manifold, it is best to remember what you are supposed to be doing- David Levithan”

“Oh…so you acknowledge that you have allowed yourself to be distracted.”

“If we let ourselves, we shall always be waiting for some distraction or the other to end before we can really get down to our work – C S Lewis.”

“So in other words you are making yourself do your reading even when distracted by a stay pair of breasts.”

“You can always find a distraction if you are looking for one – Tom Kite.”

“Shame on you Kingsley. At your age.”

“You can cry. Aint no shame in it – Will Smith”

“You are a fool. And it is in this new endevour of yours that you will come to realize.”

“Not caring more about what other people think than what you think. That’s freedom – Demi Moore.”

“I pray that you remain free indeed” Sister Esther said and turned back and entered her room.”

Mr Kingsley hissed and looked up and down the corridor. Yet still, no sign of Evae.”

So it remained until evening. The men who wanted to woo Evae did not see her at all for a whole day. The wives of 225 Katakata street remained jittery. Agbonyibo trotted about with a perpetual smile on his face. Ndifreke and Maya went for a shoot in separate taxis. Mama Akunna prepared a fresh ogogoro and herbs recipe and got Castro to help her write on a blackboard and put in front of Agbonyibo’s shop a sign that read “New ogogoro for high sense available tonight.”

The council of elders would not meet because Mama Willy-willy had forbade her husband to sit anywhere Agbonyibo may be found. People were getting restive and wondering what would happen next. Then that night something happened. Chisco returned. The children and women cheered as he alighted from the okada. He waved at everyone and slung his bag on his shoulder and bounced into the compound. They watched him open the door to Wasiu’s room and entered. While everyone wondered what Chisco was doing in Wasiu's room or how he got the keys Agbonyibo over at thew shop kept his eyes on a particular customer of Mama Akunna’s who kept glancing at him and looking away. Then when their eyes met one more time, he winked and beckoned him over to the shop. The man drained the ogogoro in his glass and payed Mama Akunna. Agbonyibo licked his lips as the plump man came to him.
