You showed your brown teeth a bit too early and no Ghana is not a second half team like Nigeria. It is not over until the whistle goes at the end of 90 mins. I am sure the whole of Sub sahara Africa would like to see that spirit when the Eagles file out against Croatia. We all want to see Nigeria not draw but beat Modric on the 16th June. Mikel and co should silence Modric, Rakitic, Perisic and co. Anything short of victory is a loss for Nigeria.

Lessons learnt from Poland, Serbia and Czech matches should guide them to victory. They should not wait for the lateral crosses to start flying in before they regroup and counter. Your goal keeper is good but sure to see teams hitting ferocious shots waiting for him to spill it for sweet rebounds because your defence sometimes go to sleep and is very slow to react. Uzoho spilt a shot against England but was lucky Ashley young did not react quick enough. The Czech used that to score against you. You might see that again in Russia. He will be tested and the enemies would be expecting to exploit that to score you.

They would expect you to have a bad first half then neutralize your threats in the 2nd half. They will know you,d string good passes together but have not cracked that penetration code. Ighalo is too unsettled to do that. Bad positioning is his worst attribute. He reads his line wrongly or he might not even be aware of that and your midfield players are do not read him well to pass when he makes the runs.

I have a feeling the tall Simi might be the key but can they use his attributes and talent well?

I'll say he is not aware of it. Nacho will do better than that man.

Ezenwa hasn't face such pressure since he began to man our post. The once Akpeyi did, he was worse than a school kid. I don't think Ezenwa would perform better than Uzoho with those crosses. If it's about experience, we really don't have an experienced GK in that team.

It happened again, the Super Eagles lost their match against the Czechs. Has luck deserted the Super Eagles? What is it that has changed in a team that had a good qualifying campaign?
After several warnings from some quarters against the use of Francis Uzoho as the first-choice goalkeeper of the Super Eagles the manager Gernot Rohr seems hell-bent on using him. To Rohr perhaps, it is Uzoho at all cost.


Our game against England could have easily been a draw if not for the young lad who made a schoolboy error which can happen at his age but which is unforgivable for a goalkeeper going to the World Cup. A ball that should have been punched out for a throwing Uzoho’s first instinct was to punch out for a corner. And that resultant corner kick was capitalized on to give England the lead. The second goal too was cheap.


After the first-choice goalkeeper Carl Ikeme was diagnosed with leukemia, Ikechukwu Ezenwa took Ikeme’s place and Nigeria qualified for the World Cup. But instead of keeping faith with Ezenwa, or looking for more matured goalkeepers he went for a young lad who is third-choice goalkeeper at the La Liga club Deportivo La Coruña, a club that has now been relegated.


I like Uzoho, but he should wait for his turn. He can’t be given a responsibility his young shoulders or rather hands can’t carry. Making him first-choice at the World Cup is just a crazy gamble. Up till now he can’t command his defence. How can he do that when his defenders are well older than him? It’s only natural for him to respect the older players to the team’s detriment. He should still be playing for the U-21.


The senior World Cup is for men, not for boys. Experience usually trumps youth. Even being the youngest team there is a disadvantage.


Well, I don’t know the magic Uzoho performs during trainings but it has yet to reflect during matches. As we say it here “na who pass na him know book.” Besides, we need a goalkeeper who keeps regularly for his club not a bench warmer.


Uzoho has not shown us why he should be ahead of Ezenwa. So much for Uzoho’s height advantage over Ezenwa. Of what good is height when it can’t be used to your advantage? What some goalkeepers lack in height they make up for in good instinct, good vision and good reaction time, positioning and good leadership to help organize their defence.


Uzoho is 19, Ezenwa is 29. I repeat, if Uzoho goes to be number one at the World Cup it means we are placing our fate on a young lad who has not kept in a competitive match, and who is third choice in his club!

Does it mean in a nation of more than 180 million people there aren’t good goalkeepers?
As I once said in a piece on the same issue “Better the devil you know than the devil you don’t know. Ikechukwu Ezenwa helped qualify us for the World Cup. He seems lucky and often trusts his luck in his rosary which he brandishes when we win. Successful teams do need luck too. The Super Eagles will surely need any kind of luck.”


Yes, there is an element of luck in life, football is not an exception. I prefer an “average” goalkeeper who keep regularly for his club and is so lucky that when he is on duty for some reason he is virtually on holiday, to a so-called “good” goalkeeper who when he is on duty he is kept busy all through. And at the end of the match you hear “Ah, if not for him the opponents would have scored 10 goals.”


But Ezenwa did creditably well against Cameroon at home and away. And also showed class against Algeria and Zambia. These are top-rated teams in Africa and moreover competitive matches.
Rohr is fixated on foreign-based players to the detriment of home-based players and our league.


If Ezenwa were playing abroad perhaps he would have been favoured. But remember that Vincent Enyeama was playing at home with Enyimba while he was our number one goal tender. This is the same club Ezenwa is playing for now. Rohr by his action is really affecting the psyche of the home-based players. Enyimba is the most successful club in Nigeria today.



We should believe it can produce at least one first-team player if not more in the Super Eagles as obtains in other great footballing nations.


Almost all the players going to the World Cup for Nigeria are foreign-based. This does not speak well of our league. Come to think of it, how many domestic league matches has Rohr watched? Rohr was nowhere for the CHAN Eagles. In the past it was suggested that any foreign manager that Nigeria contracts must help in developing our league. Those responsible should please advise Rohr before he ruins our World Cup.

Rohr has kept saying he will stick to the team that qualified us for the World Cup yet leaves out Ezenwa. But Ezenwa is the Super Eagles missing link.


Foreign managers have always worked against our league and this is hampering our progress. They use the home-based players for practice and discard them when the real thing comes for the foreign-based players who may be overrated. And we think karma can’t explain our present and past disastrous outings.

Of course it doesn't. It's just fans' theory but why are you always against Rohr and Onazi?

The level of sentiments here is just....alarming.

I for one would expect Icon4s of all people to know that in 1998 due to our bad performances the players took over, in fact we virtually didn't have a coach, the team picked itself and played the way they wanted. We won against Spain but we lost our last two matches 3-1 to Paraguay and 4-1 to Denmark. Considering the talent in that team we should have performed better if we had a coach.


Now this team hardly possess the talent. It's bemusing that they will say that the team showed it's character against Argentina and the same set of people will say that friendly games don't matter. Czech were roundly humiliated by Australia but for some reason we(some) want to believe that the coach is hiding his preferred tactics, that's the most nonsensical deduction any sane human being could ever make. so the coach is making us lose these matches so we would be considered the underdogs? So what were we before? It makes no sense whatsoever.

Back then the talk was that Mikel would make our team better but we have passed African opponents. We have gotten to a stage where all eleven players matter and the coach's ineptitude has been laid bare but some want to believe that he is losing just so that we will be considered underdogs? I don't know if I should call that sentiments or outright stupidity. I do support the SE though but at least everyone knows I have had my reservations towards Gernot Rohr and others are starting to see why(just like I had with Onazi)

Me just have the feeling that Aina will push Shehu out of the team after the WC.

Ighalo has done nothing wrong in my Opinion. He's being starved of Ball, hence nothing he can do.

The Atlanta 96 you cited had a team and formation, Rohr doesnt have either, hence, our worries are justified. He has tried so many combinations to fashion out a suitable winning team, and among those combinations, the only one that came out top is the combination and formation against Argentina, why not stick with it so that the players understand and get used to it better before our first game?

4-2-3-1 has been the formation. It's usually goalkeeper ; RB, Balogun, Ekong, LB; Ndidi, any sensible partner ; Moses, Mikel, Iwobi; Ighalo.

Footballers go through a lot. He talked about everything from start to finish.

At academica, he was told not to go for the Mandela challenge and to tell Keshi that he was injured. He refused and traveled. After he got back, he was benched. The coach refused to play him. He missed the 2014 WC and refused to sign an extension with Academica. After contract expired, he was out of a club, finished his money and even had to be getting money from his mum in Nigeria to get by. He got support from players like Onazi who housed him in Rome. Eventually, he got the offer from Israel.

The guy should consider writing a book.. There are some inspiring ups and downs.

Thanks for bringing this up. I was trying to argue that he wasn't unfairly dropped from the 2014 WC list cause I knew he had an issue with the club where he wasn't playing. Obviously, it was the club's side of the story we heard then.

Everyone is just going emotional. Iwobi played centrally due to change in tactics. Even while in the wing, he drifted often to the centre. Iwobi would still play from the wings if Rohr ever plays the 4-2-3-1.
I felt bad Aina was dropped but why all the complaints? Aina was never convincing and was rightly dropped. As for Joel, I would have preferred Agu making the final squad instead.

not to mention that this was an English team that was already two goals up, a poor English team none the less. If we play that same second half again against Croatia we will have nothing to show for it. Everybody is hailing our second half performance as if it was a very good performance but then it wasn't, it was just better than the shitshow we produced in the first half.

We were the better side in the second half. The team sef wasn't as bad as y'all are painting it.

Joel Obi is a top quality no doubt and if we go by the theory of the two faced double standard fellows, Ogu should be dropped because he is playing in an obsure league lower than Seria A.

Nobody runs away from this fact. It's a mute point. We are looking at effectiveness and the best position for him not whether he starts or not. Iwobi starting or not starting is not an issue for me particularly now that S. Moses is probably out of contention. The quality of his play is my concern. Till date you've not convinced me that Iwobi is effective on the wings. You just keep saying he is a starter. Starting is not gold. Effectiveness is. His career prospects, our WC prospects hinges not on whether he starts but on his effectiveness. No coach ever buys a player because he is a starter. Effectiveness is the premium quality coaches look for.

Once again proof to us that Iwobi is effective from the wings.

Iwobi played all the qualifiers as a winger and he scored goals playing from the wings.

It is football. Forlan flopped at Manchester United and became the highest goal scorer in Europe playing for Villareal. Theirry Henry flopped at Juventus and later became one of the best strikers in the history of the game playing for Arsenal and Barcelona.

Klose flopped at Bayern scoring three goals all season but almost equalled Ronaldo's record in 2010 WC.
