Your course of study matters a lot this days.
Courses like history, public administration, soil science, Aquaculture, biochemistry, mass communication, sociology, Anthropology, psychology, philosophy, industrial physics, botany, English & literary studies, business administration, banking & finance (except you're ICAN or CIPM certified), Agric education ,Geography & regional planning, religious studies, Education courses generally and to some extent Law ( except you are extremely brilliant with good grades ) are very useless in this present day Nigeria and their supply outweighs demand.
shhhhh that mouth. Guy you may think your degree means that's what you will do for life.
There are CEO of Banks in Nigeria who studied Fishery and Botany and they are well placed. There are various philosophies concerning education and wealth.
Do what you have to do by studying and coming out. Look for a field you would like to work invest in it and you will see the returns.
You don't know there are many Agriculture and Allied courses working in the bank , stock market, oil industry and NGO's.

Good day all. I had to create this account to post this. I need help urgently. PLS I DON'T NEED ANY MONEY. I just need advice and guidance. I'm not myself right now. I'll try to be brief

I turned 27 last week, finished my service in March and work with a private company. I actually started working here after school and 'worked' my posting to serve here and I'm still here. My salary was increased to 200k per month shortly before the lockdown but I'm required to work everyday (mon-sun). No break. Work is going well and I'm okay with the long working hours. No issue

Problem I have is that I'm constantly thinking and worried about my health and future. Nobody except my immediate family is aware that I have a chronic medical condition. I have to inject myself twice daily (morning and night). Sometimes I skip a dose cos I'm fed up but the symptoms become unbearable so I have no choice but to continue with them. Doctors say its hereditary but my parents are fine. Well, my health is not even the issue, I only mentioned it so you'd understand me better

The main problem I have is I constantly feel worthless and depressed. I've been saving since I finished school but only have close to two million naira in savings so far. I tried getting my own apartment but my parents insist it's not wise since my workplace is very close to home and that I shouldn't start incurring so much expenses now

Well, how long will I keep saving before I'm financially stable to afford a good apartment? How long till I'm able to afford a car? Get married and establish my own business?

I'm an introvert and this constant worry has made me withdrawn even more from others. No single friend. I'm even tired of this life. Sometimes I wish I would sleep and wake up a child so I don't have to worry anymore. Other times, I wish I can just sleep and not even wake up.

The least grade I got in school was 'C' which was rare. Mostly 'A' or 'B'. Yet I would constantly cry and feel worse than even those that failed or were going to probate. People hated me for that but it's beyond my control

Let me stop here. Pls, what can I do to be happy and feel good about myself? I'm always worried, sad and frowning my face. Where can I find a therapist, counselor or psychologist cos I feel something is wrong with my brain. It gets so bad I start having intense headaches. Pls I'm tired. I just want this feeling to stop
I just spoke with my bro and the most common chronic conditions that he said;
* It has to do with heart
*Hypoglycaemia
*Hyperglycemia
* Lupus Erythematous
I can bet you have either one of them.
*You need a bit of calcium for your heart so you inject yourself
* You have a low blood sugar so you have to take shots before you collapse
* You have high blood sugar so you take these shots to help bring a reasonable balance(Stop eating that chocolate)
* You must have strong muscle and bone pains where Anti-Rheumatoid Arthritis oral can't handle quickly to prevent other inflammations(Stop stressful work before you pass out).

But for now,I wanna strive hard so I can take one step at a time,transfer to anatomy,graduate with an excellent CGPA,by Gods grace.......

JAMB Can be converted to DE I think?
Psychiatry is good but they are few. I think residency is quite easy in psychiatry and Pathology since they have more than enough space for New Medics.

I don't know how well I should thank you considering your blatant response, so you talked about NYSC,so one must serve before one can apply for D.E for medicine.... wow....

So let talk about the age factor,do the age factor favour your brother, because there's this thing people says and I am not quite sure about it,that of one exceed 30,one wouldn't be able to travel abroad,maybe to work over there,and it's unlikely for one to get employed here in Nigeria, I want you to be talk more about it....

And I thought if one have a degree already,there's no reason for one to apply and sit for jamb anymore...or my assertion isn't correct,maybe you can elucidate better on that.......

I meant DE

samuelpeters:

Let me help him out.

You do not need NYSC to apply for D.E. Except postgraduate.

About the age thing. Age is important quite alright. but it doesn't mean you won't be able to work abroad depending on the route you used in travelling.
I think the point they are trying to make is this, average guys abroad usually graduates early, they are in a better position to secure job easily. While you at 30, would still be trying to settle down, garner some experience etal(age may not really be on your side when everything is set).

But then, age is not really that important as far as you got what you wanted anyways cheesy

Except some of these companies that do recuit all graduates from different fields. They give all kinds of conditions to reduce population.Unfortunately, age is one of these conditions. If you want to work in the health field then your experience and Licence are the most important not necessarily your age.

If you are coming through DE, you only need to buy DE form from JAMB and wait for the school to call you for her DE screening. But most DE candidates, do sit for UTME incase DE admission never works.
Why?? Because DE admission is competitive in Medicals but very very very competitive for Medicine in particular. So they don't want to lose admission for that year.

Like @Cetacean said, "his brother got physiotherapy through UTME but rejected it because he really wanted to be a doctor through Medicine or Dentistry"

So everything depends on your priority. Some only wanted to study any medical course(Primary/allied) while some wanted Medicine/Dentistry or nothing!
If Cetacean brother was the former in his priority, he would have become a Physiotherapist.
The Physiotherapy was when he first applied for DE ooo please. He was done with school.

Some Schools require you to serve before applying them for DE in some courses. Some do not require you. Mind you, my brother is below 30. He decided to serve because his school required it. Either a NYSC certificate or an exemption if one is needed..
Since abroad is in your mind, age doesn't limit you. Haven't you seen 45 yr olds leaving Nigeria abroad? Many countries want experience and I tell you the fact.
Travelling abroad i will suggest a specialisation in a good Medical Field like Anaesthesiology,Radiology and Dentistry will get you a good pay and you will be able to settle bills , health problems and your family welfare if you have one.(UK)
Family Medicine and Pathology also guarantees you a comfortable pay.(USA)
In the USA the Medical Fields listed above (Anaesthesiology,Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Surgery,Radiology and Dermatology are very hard to get in as a Foreigner and you might have to go their school again) Family Medicine , Infectious disease(quite a poor pay) and Pathology are quite easy to get in as Foreigner (USA).
My elder brother who graduated when I just gained admission to study engineering studied Medicine and specialised in OnG and that is what spurred my younger brother to do it. I guess I am the strangest in my Family. He is currently a Physician Assistant in the USA. Google Physician Assistant if you may.He was offered pathology for residency which he hated with so much passion.
He wasn't prepared to run into school debt because you can run into a debt of 150k dollars and above as a that time in the USA. Since Physician assistant was relatively new for foreigners he applied for it and he thanks God for making that decision he works as a OnG PA (he is not a Doc In the USA). He doesn't earn up to a Doc but he doesn't have so many insurance bills and Law enforcement agents to deal with.
TRUTH about the pay:
You won't be paid same as a white man but with time you will earn .

Sorry to bother you sir,I am a young lad who's seeking for more knowledge,please what uni did your brother graduated from??

and what uni is he attending currently??
what year did he graduated from the uni where he badged his physiology degree??

and was he admitted easily to study dentistry in his current uni?
It was because of Medicine that landed him in Physiology.I won't mention the school because if I do they will know him and know me as well.
But his CGPA is 4.78 abi 4.68 but he didn't find it funny trying to enter because they were only 3 admitted for the course. D.E. is quite hard entering to Dentistry than Medicine I swear. He mentioned over 15 that got into medicine through D.E. people that got 4.57 and the rest.
His former colleague is currently in 300 level second semester Radiography so you will know how long he had to wait for a year and a half for Dentistry excluding NYSC even when I advised he takes the admission. First he was given Physiotherapy for the first DE . But he wanted to be a Doctor either by Medicine or Dentistry. He got in by merit likewise the two. But you see Medicine and Surgery that is where corruption is.
If you want Medicine or Dentistry fine. But it is easier entering Radiography,pharmacy,med lab, Nursing than Dentistry.

I have a plan of studying harder so I can transfer back to human anatomy, for me to be able to move forward in my pursuit of becoming a medical doctor......

So here comes my question, what CGPA must an anatomy student graduate with for him/her to be able to apply for medicine via a direct entry in any Nigeria universities?

And which Nigeria universities can you advice that person to choose(a uni that always accept D.E for medicine without stress)

Thanks,as I am anticipating for your response...
With a First class of CGPA of 4.53 you can get it in many state universities. But for Federal 4.75 and above based on the DE candidates I have spoken with.
I do not say you can't get a Federal school with a Second Class of 4.48 but do you know how many Candidates are vying that same course? What of Foundation/ Predegree students?
So to be in on the safe side 4.5 and above

Nursing is one of the most fastest growing profession in the world. The diverse opportunities are crazy! Once you leave the shores of this country, the wide range of options will always make you improve.
It was one of the courses I wanted to do many many years ago

NURSING SCIENCE:
Do you care so much about people that you are willing to take enough time to nurse them back to Health? Do you like building solid and Honest relationship with people? Are you looking for an Advancing Career where you never stop rising? Can you hold your bladder for a long time? Are you not really Grossed out(Strong Stomach)? Do you not mind being there for a Patient even at his or her death period? Then Nursing is for you.
Nursing has being in existence from time immemorial. It is a profession which was designed to bring back a patient to Health and wellness. For example after serious Surgery a Patient has undergone,a Nurse (Perioperative Nurse) is the person who was there before,during and after surgery to ensure the patient is getting better or ailing even more.
Nursing Science:
The science of nursing is characterized by three themes of inquiry that relate to the function of intact humans: (1) principles and laws that govern life processes, well-being, and optimum function during illness and health; (2) patterns of human behavior in interaction with the environment in critical life situations; and (3) processes by which positive changes in health status are affected.
The Myth:
The myth is that Nursing is thought to be a Female profession or at least appears so. This became very pronounced during the Crimean War when Soldiers were injured and sick. The Lady Florence Nightingale was actively involved in treating patients using are two trademarks; Aseptic and Her Carrying Lamp. She is referred to the Mother of Modern Nursing. She propagated this Propaganda which is still in play till today" they are too dirty(Men) and less of a heart to handle this" when she was asked about men in the profession later.
Another cause that there was an age of technology and advancement of Technology and Medicine. Then Many Men left for them because they were paying a lot of money. Then women filled in this things.
Another Problem was there was poor enlightenment of young males to enhance them coming into the profession.
Nurses who are Men are doing great in their field and thriving exponentially.
Nursing Science In Nigeria: It started in UNIMAID in 1978. It seeks to understand the science of wellness of patients and not only that, it seeks to understand patient response to psychologically,spiritually and Physically.
Where Can I work?
*Hospitals
* Care Homes
* Pharmaceuticals
* Military and Paramilitary
* Teaching Facilities
* Public Health
The advantage of Nursing is that it is an independent profession. It has virtually all the various disciplines in Medicine and even More. They work very closely with Doctors to help patients get better.
A Big advantage when you study Nursing Science(BNSc), you get three Certifications i think
* Registered Nurse (R.N)
* Registered Midwife (R.M)
*Registered Nurse of Public Health (R.N PH)
CONS:
* As a man you build your confidence to overcome Gender Discrimination
* You may not get so much mouth watering pay initially
* You must continually build yourself to avoid being static
* Endure a lot so you don't lose your cool.
* So much Quackery

Just See How I Relate this My story with Nigeria.
In my area there is a Man who always beats his Dog very brutal and the Dog always end up with Injury and bad Sores. I was talking to my guy that this Man was beating this Dog badly. He said was it "My Business". I said this Dog is suffering and he said I shouldn't mind.
I went to the man to tell him to take it easy on the Dog just make few corrections flog it but Injuries is on the High side since their skin is tough. He said was it my Dog? So I said what was the price of the Dog and He said 5k since it was Local Dog. I paid, got and treated the Dog. My Vet was badly annoyed.
To Cut the Long story short the Dog is better, fatter, bigger and well. Then this Stupid foolish idiot came with 10k that he needs his Dog back. I Laughed hard gave him a huge INSULT and sent him out my house.
In Relation to our Life in Nigeria. You wills see someone improve another and something then the Big Fool who wasted and made that person initially useless will later come and claim the person.

Very independent of one another.
Reason why they are not even in the same school(Pharmacy school and Medical school).

The only thing they have in common on a standard knowledge are
Biochemistry and Pharmacologyy.

Anatomy, physiology and Pathology are just brush courses in pharmacy school. Not too deep like Medical students.

I'm not saying you are wrong oh cheesy

Because they are not close is the reason why Pharmacy is not under College of Medicine. The former, some times, is situated in the Main campus while Medicals cross to College which is very close to the university teaching hospital or they all cross but are independent.

Do you want a Course you won't want to always see blood? Then this course is for you.
Medical Rehabilitation should not be confused with Rehabilitation medicine. While the the first doesn't diagnose diseases but work on using Physical therapy inclined to Clinical to help people regain health(Physical), the Latter is a branch of medicine which involves diagnosing,proffering and preparing healthy plans for recovery. It involves studying the disability and Ability of individuals in Relation to their Health.
Medical Rehabilitation and physiotherapy are same with slight differences.
Where can I work?
* Orthopaedic Hospitals and General Clinics
* With the Military for Rehabilitating Victims of movement injuries
* With Sport Industries to rehabilitate injured Sport persons.
*Research Institutions to develop better movement aid
*Teaching Facilities
CONS:
* A field which you need to actually use your muscles which might be strenuous
*A field where you can readily Loose your cool
* Not a high pay typically 80k and above
* Not so much openings
* You might be slapped or pushed because of patients pain and agony
ONE BENEFIT IS THAT YOU FORM A STRONG BOND WITH PATIENT.

Bro calm down grin
We ain't fighting.
Its not about being rich or poor. Our focus is medical courses and medical field.

When you calm down to look at my post very well, you would see I didn't attack these courses in any form. I only differentiated what many of us do not know in the health industry in Nigeria and the world at large.

Care to know what a professional course and a professional degree means?
Let me put it this way, some courses are professional courses but are not professional degrees. Example: Accountacy. You will only become a professional accountant by virtue of ICAN and other certification.

Lets narrow it down to Medicals.
All Medical courses except these ones i called "stepping stones" are professional courses and are also professional degrees. Example: MBBS, B.MLS, Pharm.D, B.Nsc, B.Rad, B.MR/DPT e.t.c. These are professional degrees at the same time professional courses because they are all certified/given licence and also inducted into their various professional bodies at the end of their studies, still go for a COMPULSORY uninterrupted 1year training under a certified professional before giving a permanent License for NYSC and Labour Market.

Can that be said about Anatomy, Physiology, Medical Biochemistry, Pharmacology with just BSc.

When you read my post very well, i made mentioned that Universites are greedy. Knowing fully well there is no cut clear path for these courses in the health field. Especially in their undergraduate level/degree.

Ideally, ALL Anatomy, physiology, Medical biochemistry and Pharmacology graduates are supposed to either go back for Medicine/Dentistry/Allied courses or FURTHER to postgraduate.
But what we have is someone with BSc.Anatomy looking for a job after 4years+NYSC. Someone with little or no practical training in the field.

Check round the world, graduates from these courses further into Medical School or Postgraduate School.

All you said about lecturers in these stepping stone courses is correct. Mind you, some are doctors with Masters and PhD in those courses and some are pure breed with Masters and PhD. No one is just with BSc.

So try and get my point.

I'm not saying they can't be successful(I'm not God), all I'm saying is that these universites are the ones not doing it right. Graduates of these courses should also know their BSc. In any of these courses is not the end in itself especially in the Health field. They should thrive to further into postgraduate or medical school or look for a job elsewhere.

Because few of them got job in forensic lab and other sweet places doesn't negate the fact that these courses are a DEAD END if you want to look for a job with just your Bachelors in the health field.

Note: Most love these courses along the line because these courses are purely Medical and they also mix up with other Medical students. They are all treated equally/special in school until they graduate then reality sets in because majority hope to work in the health field but they do not have licence in any of the field.

Can a BSc. Anatomy carry out complex tissue processing in Histopathology Lab more than MLS; Histopathology Major that did practicals, clinical posting from 3rd yr- 5th yr, 1yr internship, 1yr NYSC
That is how many years experience again?

I Love them( I have some as friends). I want peace to reign everywhere i find myself but you also have to do the right thing and tell people the truth.

That is just it.
There is even a thread here on Nairaland about these courses. So many complains from different quarters.
I couldn't agree more.
There's a kid I know that is always communicating with me He was saying that He loves Biology and Mathematics and he wants a Medical course but he didn't want medicine and Pharmacy. For example he comes to you for advice what will you give him.
His parents has already budgeted him and His brother for Pharmacy medicine Respectively. Funny the way parents do things.
I told him to consider Radiography and Medlab or he should for Chemistry purely.

Most times, i prefer to make people understand how the health Care system works.

Health workers are divided into Primary health care providers and Allied health care providers.

Primary health care providers are professionals that work almost independent of one another and could work even in the most remote/rural area with little or no modern tools.
They are the foundation of what we come to know as modern medicine.
These professionals are Medicine/Dentistry, Pharmacy and Nursing.

Allied health care providers are professionals that are created due to evolution in medicine.
Their services specifically, is to help the primary care providers to work effectively. These professionals use modern technology in medicine to carry out their job(which makes their job more technical).
Examples are: Medical Radiography, Medical Laboratory Science, Physiotherapy (though has evolved real fast),dental technology, pharmacy technology and other courses he listed above are all answerable to their specialists in the field of either Medicine/Dentistry, Pharmacy and Nursing.

From the above, you can see that i didn't list Anatomy, Physiology, Medical biochemistry, Pharmacology as allied courses because these courses are not meant to be studied at undergraduate level.
Why??
Because it is a stepping stone for other licenced professionals(Primary and Allied) to be effective in their various field.
That means, if you really love these courses(anatomy etal), after obtaining your degree in (Primary/Allied), you can now go for postgraduate in those stepping stone courses.

NB: I will be calling Anatomy, physiology, Medical biochemistry, Pharmacology as Stepping Stone courses. To reduce stress.

From History, Allied providers started as assistants to these PRIMARY professionals with educational requirements as low as primary/secondary school certificate. Later, they(allied) pushed to develop their own curriculum as science continue to evolve and technology continues to be applied in Medicine. Infact these PRIMARY professionals helped in designing the curriculum of these other ALLIED professionals, not for the latter to be equal to the former but for BOTH to work effectively in these Modern days.
Example: No matter how Radiographers would claim they know in Radiation Medicine, they can't beat these Specialists (Radiologists) in the field of Radiation Medicine. Same with Pharmacy Technology in Pharmacy, same with Medical Laboratory Science in Pathology, same with physiotherapy in Orthopedic Medicine, same with Dental Technology in Dental Medicine and so on.

Like i said, these allied providers can go for postgraduate (Masters and PhD in their own field or in the field of stepping stone courses) but can NEVER be an authority in the field. Because the postgraduate is academically based not professionally based like we have in Postgraduate College of Medicine,Nursing and pharmacy which make these people specialists in the field till they get to CONSULTANCY status.

In the western world, some of these postgraduate colleges now admit allied courses but with another path which can also make these allied courses Consultants in their fields.

But in Nigeria, this is the problem we have in the Health Sector.
Medicine(NMA) vs.Others(JOHESU). The former do not want the latter to evolve to its full potential. while the latter are also not serious with upgrading themselves but think by virtue of Masters and PhD should give them Consultancy which is not so(they should all be looking at building their own postgraduate colleges or make peace with Doctors to allow them pass through their own).

Another problem are these stepping stone courses.Universites admit them knowing fully well they have no place in the health field in the undergraduate level. Because normally these courses are suppose to be in the postgraduate level for Primary and Allied courses to Master and do PhD in them or even if they are in undergraduate level, the degree should be used to gain admission into PRIMARY/ALLIED courses not to go look for jobs grin

Make i stop here. At least this should give you all an idea on which one to choose for JAMBITES.
personally, i will never advice anyone to study these stepping stone courses.

It is better you do allied courses because they are also licensed to carry out their job and are almost independent in private practice. while stepping stone courses are not, thereby leading to frustration.

Note: I focused more on Allied courses because they are not so popular and majority in these courses wanted medicine initially. So it is important you know what you are getting into.

I think I must correct you in terms of the "Stepping stone courses". They are done as standard undergraduate courses in many countries in the World. The Stepping stone you say produced so many Enterprising books in the World and Nigeria.
Although many of them are jobless but many work as lecturers,environmental Sanitation Officers in Nigeria, Have big Morgues all over Nigeria and Oversee Drug Production in Nigeria.
I can List Names of Many Anatomists that are working in the Police Forensic, I can List many Biochemist,Physiologist and Pharmacologist Working in LUTH and some working Along vets in Abbatoirs.
More than 2 decades growing up we as Science students gwere taught only these things in Order to succed.
* Be a Nurse for females only which is a pure Hoax
* Study Medicine and be called a Doctor and Leave Nigeria
* Study Pharmacy so you can open a Big Chemist Shop
* Be an Engineer and Construct things
* Be an Architect so you will be Famous and get contracts worth Millions of Naira
The other courses are all Crap because Nigerian Society told us So not because of it were true and all other courses were all Alien until some were given them in University and We all hated and we will struggle to come out of it delve into another field or just use it to study bigger Money making courses.
This same Mindset will always creep in when you all grow up and understand that Love is Key and Not what Society says so.
I ended up in Agriculture because my love for it and I don't regret Engineering.
I ALWAYS SAY THAT MEDICAL COURSES DOESN'T MAKE YOU RICH. Just do a simple business and boom you are in Money. Abi is The Richest Doctor Richer than Dangote or Elon Musk. Is the Biggest hospital Network richer than NAPA VALLEY
If you're after money you will hate yourself and you think you can travel out is easy? That's a Hoax. You think because they pay Doctors 150k abroad and above means they're are rich.
CHECK HOW MUCH PERCENT GOES TO INSURANCE,BILLS AND SCHOOL DEBTS THEN YOU WILL KNOW HOW FAR. Do yo
