Iconstar:
Inasmuch as Nigeria is plagued by unemployment, the course u study also has a role to play. U can't see a jobless doctor, optometrist or pharmacist.
You are may be right bro but they are not many, never use ."can't ".I normally say that is a deliberate act of some certain people to protect their health field while other faculties rot.
For example the only health field which gets job and internship easily are nurses not even doctors. The second are radiographer since they are not many. The third are the Dentist since they cannot be more than 40 in a department sometimes 20, 10. The fourth are the medical Doctors, the fifth is the Prosthetic and Orthotics because they are highly sorted in the Orthopaedic hospitals. You see optometrist, medical laboratory scientists, veterinary medicine, pharmacy, physiotherapy, anatomy, pharmacology, physiology are not readily sort for.
Pharmacists can save themselves because they are. readily self employed same for lab scientists. The remaining ones work for private and are underpaid.
So next time ehn get your facts right. The Health field will become too saturated in the future in Nigeria

Education / A Confused Tertiary Education System In Nigeria by Cetacean419: 4:25pm On Sep 29, 2020
Every year millions of students register for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination in a bid to get education. Some students ideologies are to go to school for "going sake" while many others seek to better themselves, strive to make life a bit better for themselves and their families. I was once among many years ago and I got my desired course.
Out of necessity to strive, some accepted courses they don't know existed because, they did not meet with cut off Mark ,they couldn't pay to secure a space in their desired course or some silly mistakes in subject combination.
Some drifted from universities to polytechnics, various institutes and colleges of education because Low marks.
Sometimes I do feel for the polytechnics and colleges of education which is seen as a Last resort to get educated.
I can confidently say 95% of students apply for universities because of the fear to get ND and HND,NCE disparity in the Labour Field. This is where the education system has failed in handling this shortcomings over the years.
For the university, some courses I see is depressing for me as a Nigerian, WHY? Because it is quite difficult for them to readily fit into the Nigerian
labour force.
I can bet this with anyone that a majority of you who are graduates chose some of these courses I am about to list but ended up somewhere different not because you were not qualified but because the education system failed you or you failed yourself.
These are the List of courses Many of You applied for Vs What you got. Some got substantial courses at the Latter but some got painful ones
Desired course by survey and research
*Medicine -----
*Nursing
*Dentistry
*Medical Laboratory Science
*Radiography
*Optometry
*Mass communication
*Law
*Mechanical engineering
*Electrical Engineering
*Civil Engineering
* Computer Engineering
*Chemical engineering
*Computer Science
*Political Science
*English Language
*Economics
*Accounting
*Business administration
* Theatre Arts/Drama arts/Performing arts
* English Education
*Architecture
*Quantity Surveying
*Urban and Regional Planning
*Pharmacy
The above is from a research Institute in Nigeria. I did not List Information technology, Information and communication Technology, Cyber security, Software engineering, Economics and Computer Science etc. This is because some are relatively new while others are like"two in one".
What many got :
Fishery, psychology, agriculture, mathematics, physics, statistics, mining engineering, Geography,Geology,Geophysics,Biology,Botany, History, philosophy, Interpersonal relationship, Industrial Relation and personnel Management,Pharmacology, Veterinary medicine, Biochemistry, microbiology, food technology /science, Astronomy, Adult education, Nursery education, computer education, Integrated science, Home Economics, structural engineering, Production engineering, Transport management, Building/Building Technology, Anatomy, Physiology, Linguistics, Languages, Cognitive science, brewing, Parasitology and entomology,Glass engineering, textile engineering, Materials and Metallurgy Engineering etc.
Some eventually loved these courses and thrived in them.
I don't deny many people applied for these courses but the true applicants are few. Some also landed in some of these courses for failing to sustain certain marks.
SOLUTIONS
* Colleges of education should be converted to universities of education in order to award B. ed. Also Licences should be awarded for those who want to practice as teachers and a reasonable fee should be accrued to them to certify they are indeed professionals
* Polytechnics should be converted to Institutes of Technology which will be awarding Bsc and B Tech which trains students to be true technologists. HND/ND will be faced out and those who have it will be opportune to apply for a year of conversion.
* There should be a different board entirely for Polytechnics and Colleges of education which conducts the exams of students willing to enroll in their school. It shouldn't be conducted by JAMB where anyone who fails to be admitted in a University automatically switches to them.
These will reduce a burden on universities and lead to improvement in the Institute of Technology and Universities of education.

You are wise. And may your wealth of wisdom never dessicate.
Thanks my guy. My niece has been disturbed lately since my brother, her father wants her to learn tailoring which she doesn't like. The girl said she wants to study English to teach, my brother is saying she should go for Law.
From my statement above her father wants her to get a degree and end up in tailoring if Law eventually bleeps up in the future. These goes to tell you that we go to school IN NIGERIA to create jobs for ourselves, why the Wealthy go to school to get these jobs or get support from their family to start up for their own businesses because they want to.
I remembered how I had to relocate to Lagos to hustle because my degree wasn't of necessity yet. It might be needed later but what of the work 10yrs + experience as an engineer where will I get that from when I have worked 8yrs+ in agriculture.

Then one person will say learn coding and programming to succeed. If you think coding and programming makes you a computer scientist then you are jonzing.
During the advent of gaming. Many Americans dropped out of school and became programmers for gaming companies. Those companies that liquidated resulted in the loss of jobs of these programmers.
Some went back to school others became jobless.
A TIME WILL COME WHEN PROGRAMMING WITHOUT THE APPROPRIATE DEGREE AND CERTIFICATE TO BACK IT UP WILL BECOME JOBLESS.
MANY GO INTO PROGRAMMING AS A LAST RESORT OF HOPE. I REPEAT PROGRAMMING IS JUST A TINY BIT OF COMPUTER WHICH IS NECESSARY FOR COMPUTER DEVELOPMENT.
YOU DON'T FORCE SOMEONE INTO ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND PERSONAL BUSINESS, IT IS CONCEIVED AND DONE WILLINGLY.
BILL GATES WAS NEVER FORCED LIKEWISE MARK ZUCKERBERG, DANGOTE, JEFF BEZOS AND MANY OTHERS.

I will be sincere here. You don't go to university to learn a skill. You go to university to be educated and a product of your education is your certificate.
If you want to learn a skill go to a technical college or a vocational school. If you think Mark Zuckerberg is still a drop out till date ehn you must be A BIG FOOL.
If not that Nigeria has a failed system, why will you struggle to enter university and at the end still be jobless.
People are learning skills because Nigeria failed them not because it is necessary.
How many doctors in Nigeria no anything asides medicine in Nigeria.
Someone that studied Business Administration is selling Soft drinks and you think that is what she wanted?
I studied Mechanical engineering and I am now in the Agriculture sector selling Cassava,Yam Maize, Rearing farm animals, constructed a mini barn and silo because of no job even if it is my business, is it what I studied for?
If learning a skill and going for my degree is what is contemporary in Nigeria then I weep for Nigeria.
A biologist becoming a Tailor, A lawyer becoming a cybercafe owner, an Engineer becoming a Cashier, An Agriculturist becoming a banker. Is that the core of their professions.
I BLAME ALL NIGERIA FOOLISH UNIVERSITIES, COLLEGES OF EDUCATION ,POLYTECHNICS FOR OFFERING COURSES THAT GUARANTEES ONE UNEMPLOYMENT AND THE STUPID EDUCATION BOARD FOR ACCREDITING SUCH COURSES AND MOST IMPORTANTLY I BLAME NIGERIANS FOR VOTING THE WRONG PEOPLE FOR 21 YEARS NOW.
GOD HAVE MERCY ON THIS GENERATION.

Education / Who Is A Doctor by Cetacean419: 12:48am On Sep 26, 2020
Some few days back when I was in church, there was an invited guest whose name was Pastor Dr. Folu Adebayo(NOT THE REAL NAME). When the Pastor in charge of service called his name to announce his presence, Some youth behind me were saying "shey this one na real Doctor again ABI wayo Doctor "I heard various statements behind me that I had to change my seat.
After service I pondered about who a Doctor was. I knew that there are several Doctors e.g Doctor of Medicine (Physician), Dr of Theology (Clergy),Dr of Veterinary medicine, Dr of Pharmacy (PharmD),Eye Doctors not Doctors of the eye(Optometrist)(DO) and many more.
But who is a Doctor?
When you check your Dictionary the first thing you see is
Doctor=>Physician
In our society for instance, Many people don't even know who a Doctor is.
If I say that " Hi, I am Dr Ighodalo ". The opinion people will go for is that I am a medical Doctor. This has caused so many controversy in Nigeria.
There is an optometrist where I live in. People call him Dr all the time and he is one. He said he is an eye Doctor not a Doctor of the eye which is Medical Doctor. When people meet him concerning his advice on Drugs he gives his opinion and tells them to always go to the hospital.
Many people find it strange Because he bears this title "Dr".
The term "Doctor" means to teach in latin. It was first used in the 1200s. It wasn't till the 1400s it was used to refer to the medical Doctor and was more popular in the 1600s. The Medical Doctors were originally referred to as Leech which is archaic.
The Dr of Philosophy (Philosophy means pursuit for knowledge) and it is a title conferred on one based on research done on a particular field or Given to one as Honorary because of great feat achieved by one most times tied to humanitarian contribution or philanthropy. It ranges from arts, commerce/economics,science.
Many wolves are gone into the world causing harm claiming they are medical Doctors. There are only four ways of bearing the title "Dr"
*Attending Medical school and then becoming a Medical Doctor (MD/MBBCh/MBBS)

*Attend a program whose title is instilled as a Doctor (Doctor of Optometry (DO) not Bachelor of Optometry in some countries ,Dr of Psychology in some countries , Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) which is a bachelor Degree in some regions, Doctor of veterinary Medicine (DVM),

Doctor of Dental science (DDS) in places like the USA not BDS; Bachelor of Dental Science which I find funny in Nigeria bearing the Doctor title and some fewer courses)

* Attain A Doctor of philosophy(PhD ) like; Doctor of Law,Doctor Of Nursing Practice (DNP), Dr of Theology, Dr of English and many more.

*Honorary Doctorate Degree. You might get this while alive or Dead. It is given to people who have done a lot of good to humanity by philanthropic gestures. Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Mugabe, Indabosky (Odumeje),Dangote etc.
In essence, Ask the person what kind of Doctor he or she is and don't swallow it like the way a fish swallows the hook and line.
There is nothing like a Real Doctor. We have physicians or quacks and we have the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Education / Hidden Courses To Study In The University For Breakthrough by Cetacean419: 3:48pm On Sep 24, 2020
I will start by saying no course is useless to study but Society has placed values on some over the others. Examples of such courses are Medicine, Law,Engineering,Architecture, computer science and related fields, Nursing,Accounting,Banking and Finance etc.
One thing we must understand is that it is not what you studied in school means you will do that after graduation. Some studied Medicine but are now Oil administrators, some studied engineering and are now renowned journalist, some studied Pharmacy and are now Bankers. The list is an endless one.
I studied mechanical engineering even though I once repaired Factory equipment it was far from my scope of practice. I ended up chiefly in agriculture where I constructed a mini silo for grains and a semi storage facility for tubers which I am earning from, from sales of produce and that is where I applied some of my engineering skill.
The Lists are:
AGRICULTURE :It is a broad field which cuts across animals and plants.
It has so many branches like aquaculture,Aviculture, horticulture and many more. The biggest barrier is capital. If you don't mind saving for some time you will reap from it. Some inner areas in Lagos, Ogun state and Oyo even in other states . I rented a land on lease for 20k and it was 6 plots some where inner Lagos which is peaceful. Do not feel unhappy if you get a related field like agriculture economics, crop science, botany, fishery or Agriculture engineering even biology.

CHEMISTRY: It is a dreaded field by science students because of chemical compound names. Some will say why don't I study chemical engineering or pharmacy? Chemical engineering is a bit far from chemistry to be sincere with you all and I know the kind of mathematics, physics and a bit of chemistry these guys go through. Pharmacy has a wide spectrum from drugs, soaps etc. If you see chemistry as a means of livelihood you will strive. You can delve into Agro production, chemical synthesis, Environmental science, oil exploration and many more. It takes dexterity, courage and patience to reap the fruit of your labor and when you do, be thankful to God for that. Some fields like applied chemistry, industrial chemistry, Organic chemistry and many more.

MATHEMATICS : A field feared by virtually everyone and the most used in our everyday life. It is used by market women, Barbers, tailors, Physicians, Pharmacists, Chemists, teachers and NLANDERS.
A mathematician readily blends into various sectors like business, Health, Agriculture, Education and many more. Kudos to our mathematicians. If you decide to go into education you will make a lot of money from it. As a Government employee, you earn more. If you decide to go into business and you become a Data scientist, you make a huge income and become fulfilled. Learn how to apply mathematics in computer knowledge it is a lot useful. Other related fields include statistics, physics, applied/industrial mathematics etc.

My Last one and the biggest money spinner even a bigger money spinner than architecture, computer science, medicine,Accounting,Nursing, pharmacy and many more by my own opinion. This course you don't need to work for one organization but for a lot.
LANGUAGE: Language will never fail to make you earn from English Language(Phonetics),Yoruba, French, Igbo, Hausa, Fulfude, German, Mandarin(Chinese), Deutsche(German),Russian, Spanish, Portuguese and many more. Studying any Language course creates an atmosphere of belonging and warmth. Employment is waiting for you even knocking at the door for you to open. You can work several institutions like Foreign Affairs, Embassy, Schools, Hospital, Religious centres, and many more.

I will always say that you need information, faith, diligence ,patience, and God's favor.

Buhari has allowed himself to be emotionally blackmailed by PDP, to extent that he would rather throw his own men and party under the bus just to paint a different picture from what's the public perception of him.

You do Technologist work cuz your company probably employs USA engineers to do the Engineering work while Nigerian Engineers do Technologist worl
many companies multinational do it here and you can't complain i work in a manufacturing company and i tell you design is far from what I do. We only use designs to monitor leakages , to see if there is a restriction of flow and many more. I had the notion growing up that engineers build things like keke, okada, cars etc . engineers do this actually but hand use is far from it. They build prototype and test run although if any issues arise they solve it mathematically and using other techniques. i wanted to use my hands, brains and knowledge. If you watch discovery world sometimes you will know this programme what could possibly go wrong and you will love engineering technology. I will learn spare parts repair and car maintenance and work with my tools. money is not everything and kids don't know this yet .

who is ranting? Why do I feel you are still in uni? When you will come out you will know what I am saying. Most grads like us who are working in the industry do technologists work. From design to trouble shooting statistics and measurements and maintenance . Apart from a bit of design, maybe programming and book what do you know about engineering? Institutes of Technology abroad train engineers and technologists and they carry out their duties effectively. Fine without exceptional engineering there won't be technology. If you plan is to eat fried plantain Won't you fry it? If you like write all the recipes in this world you must surely on gas and fry.

Education / Re: Engineering is the future of Nigeria by Cetacean419: 2:20pm On Sep 13, 2020
Nigerians are quite confused there is a difference between Technology and Engineering and I have seen a post here in nairaland about it.
Nigeria is too archaic very old let's just say living in the 15th century concerning our education.
BTech-->Bachelor of Technology
BEng---> Bachelor of Engineering
Engineering involves the use of design, core science and mathematical analysis involvement in solving real life problems or issues
Technology involves the implementation of this designs which is bringing it into reality. They do a lot of practical work and a reasonable amount of designs, trouble shooting and mathematics and science
NIGERIA IS LIKE A MAN THAT WENT TO THE MARKET TO BUY A CHIFFON MATERIAL INSTEAD OF BUYING THAT MATERIAL HE REALLY NEEDS HE DECIDED TO BUY LACE, ADIRE AND GUINEA DRESS WHICH HE DOESN'T NEED FOR NOW.
There is no technology without engineering and vice versa but the most important is that they can't survive without science. Imagine designing a prototype of a floating bed who would bring it into reality? Engineers or Technologists? Same applies with Medicine and nursing both are close but none can survive without the other but all depends on the MPCP(Maths, chemistry and Biology). None is superior over the other. Peace out

Health / Nigerian Doctors What Is Going On by Cetacean419: 1:41pm On Sep 13, 2020
Why are doctors in Nigeria like this? They don't treat you properly. The only thing they know is to give drug prescription and nothing more.

N:B-> I DO NOT MEAN ALL BUT A VAST MAJORITY.
Some years back when I went a teaching hospital on referral and I was being treated, I asked the doctor what my illness was and the only thing I was hearing was that I had an infection. INFECTION for crying out loud is that an illness condition?
I took a friend to a renowned hospital on the mainland Lagos and he asked what was wrong with him. All the Doctor could say was "Your blood is low and we would put you on drip". My guy wasn't just satisfied after they collected 26k from his hand for doing bed rest. He was pissed and further questioned the Doctor. The Doctor was angry saying he knows his job and saved my friend life.
I fell ill recently and I was always having pain in my belly(I know that stomach is an organ ABI)?and I was referred to a government hospital so I went to the government hospital because I believe they would do the right thing . They didn't even ask me to run test which I could pay or even tell me a private lab I could do the test. They just admitted me and put me on drip. Two days I was not getting better and they wanted to refer me to a teaching hospital. I said NO and I went to a big lab and several tests were run to see any flaw including X-ray . The results came out and it was malaria,H-pylori(Ulcer)and worms because they took a stool sample from me and I saw the results and they explained it to me, I even took it to some other professional Doctor to check it again. Thank God I did go there an I paid 54k for health chaii.
The only thing I know they do is to give drugs and na so I for die na. If I want drug wouldn't I go to a good pharmacy and pay lesser than the amount. Within this covid I spent over 100k because of negligence and how much am I earning mtcheew.
If you like chop your noble profession and you can't deliver, you are a foolish one.
IS IT THAT YOU GUYS ARE BANNED FROM TELLING YOUR PATIENTS THEIR ILLNESSES OR YOU DON'T JUST KNOW?
N:B--> if you like quote me out of context if you are a Doctor or your child or relatives are part of them, use your brains.
NOBODY SHOULD TELL ME IT'S BECAUSE OF IT IS BAD FACILITIES THAT CAUSED IT. This is a common saying by the Doctors because if facilities are important you guys ought to make it a priority but una put am as Laissez-faire (anything goes) and you guys take salary seriously but not like the way una take rehabilitating the hospitals.
PEOPLE ARE DYING AND I WOULD HAVE DIED ALSO. I have been to private hospitals and the government owned is such a shame most of the time
