Odoctor:

The best place to be after medicine. Even better than pharmacy as long as Nigeria is concerned. The face of modern medicine. Go for it, if you are a jambite
Personally Comparing Pharmacy and Radiography is like comparing Apples and Oranges.
How I wish you compared it with Med lab it would have been Okay.
Radiographers assist radiologist to provide Clearer pictures of images and assisting patient to the X-ray room and getting those Images as clearly and accurate as possible.
The Medical Laboratory Scientist is supposed to assist the pathologist to get results of test majorly body fluids then communicate it to the Pathologist more often times or Sometimes to the Physician.
From History you will see that Radiography and Clinical Laboratory Science was designed to aid the Radiologist and Pathologist because they will be too busy reading films of X-rays and slides respectively. I can't Imagine a Radiologist handling CT-Scan, MRI machines were he has other important diseases to diagnose.
IN NIGERIA EVERYBODY WANT TO BE IMPORTANT AND INDEPENDENT NOT MINDING THE HEALTH OF PATIENTS.
I HAVE NOT SEEN IN A BIG HOSPITAL WERE THEY SAID THAT THEY WANT TO SEE A RADIOGRAPHER OR A MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENTISTS. OR HAVE YOU?
It is only when you have attained a Masters in Diagnostic Radiography you can diagnose patient a bit independently of a Radiologist but you must seek a Radiologist for Real issues.
Pharmacy is quite far from Medicine not to talk more of Radiography.
BE GUIDED @ODOCTOR

If you're in school you can always pick Jamb form and Write again.
You can still work on Architecture if you feel you want to go into buildings and construction. CAD is very interesting and you will love it even more. You can still do it as side hustle. Just a simple certificate and Skill will land you a contract in Computer World. I know a PHYSIOLOGY student who works as a cybersecurity expert here in Nigeria.
My guy to me do not leave Architecture.
I am not a judge but Getting a certificate in either as Front-end personnel or Back-end can give you good cash while in school.
I know people who just do web design and making 200k monthly.
Do what you love and not what people say.
JAH BLESS.

MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENCE:
Clinical laboratory sciences (also known as medical technology or medical laboratory science) is a biology/chemistry-based bachelor's degree that prepares students for exciting, challenging and dynamic careers in places such as hospital labs and clinics, forensic labs, veterinary clinics, industrial research labs and molecular biotechnology labs.
Professionals in this field analyse blood, urine, tissue, and other body specimens. These test results play an important role in the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases.
MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENCE IN NIGERIA:
Medical laboratory science is very versatile considering the fact that tests must be run all the time for efficient diagnoses.
If you don't want to work directly with treating patients but you want to have an impact in their lives then this is for you. If you don't mind looking at semen, vomits, faeces, blood, urine and other body fluids, this is for you?
CONS:
* You are not Licenced to diagnose patients and if you as a Patient seek them for help it is done at your own peril.
* You are not permitted to tell patients confidential stuffs involving their health.
* Your career growth is tied to Laboratory Medicine(Pathology) whether in health or sciences. You report to the Pathologist often times. The highest you can be is a Laboratory Manager or a more rewarding PhD(Doctor), Lecturer or Professor.
* You must be sound in Chemistry and Mathematics.
* Industries are becoming saturated with Lab scientist.
* Poor And Ill-equiped laboratories.
ANOTHER BENEFIT IS THAT YOU CAN RUN YOUR LABORATORY ACCORDING TO THE MLSCN ACT WHICH MAKES YOU AN ENTREPRENEUR.
This is purely mine and not general so feel free to educate and correct.

MEDICINE AND SURGERY (Human Medicine):
The most sort after Medical course in the World. There are three brothers in Medicine which are Medicine and Surgery, Dentistry and Veterinary Medicine. These are the pure Medical Courses. The remaining ones are allied health sciences except Nursing.
WHY?
It is the most "prestigious" course in the world since its philosophy is based on Disease treatment(Saving life) rather than taking care of patients which is Nursing.
Can you adapt to stress, Effectively Communicate, Do smart work, Read, Have a strong stomach(Seeing Rubbish and Irritating things), Have Empathy and Show compassion, Patience and Consistency, Enthusiasm to learn and Conscience.This is for you. You didn't see prestige right?

Your Love for Humans and Saving Lives is just a preamble to the course and a different ball game entirely. It will come to play when you have to deal with emergencies, Break a bad news of death to your patients, deal with nervous patients, deliver a baby, have to know drug interactions before you kill someone and Endure burn out.
There are Some benefits of studying Medicine and Surgery:
* Seeing a Patient recover and Thank you is the Most rewarding ever.
* Learn from Mistakes and improve
* Get a Good Pay
* Prestige and Respect
* Be a strong advisor in Health of Someone
* Think Fast,talk fast and with precision.
* You are highly sort for in every country because of your skill.
NOTE: Don't study medicine if you don't have patience or you are unwilling to help people. Don't do it for the money or prestige because when none comes the way you want it, you will be forced to do wrong things like; Sustaining Someone illness which is bad, treating someone for a cause that is not there, abortions and lying.
Where Can I work?
* Hospitals both private and Public
* Armed Forces
* Research Facilities
* Food Industries
*Public Health
*Teaching Facilities
* Pharmaceuticals
There are so many specialities to pick from which you can check yourself
Medicine in Nigeria
CONS:
* It is not everyone who will specialise
* You may not get the income you are looking for
* Incessant strikes
* Poor Facilities and Poor environment.
* Harassment and Bullying
* Never Do Medicine because you think you are intelligent because Intelligence doesn't necessarily pay alot in Med school.
*Never Do it because of peer,family and Society Pressure because you alone will be responsible for your actions not them.
* Never Do it for money because frustration might lead you to evil.
* Never Do it for fame because you may end up being a local dejected champion.

I pondered and asked Myself this question.
NOTE: I am an Agriculturist not a Health Expert but I am sound a bit in the Health Field. THIS IS FOR HEALTH COURSES
IF EVERYONE STUDIES EITHER NURSING, MEDICINE, PHARMACY, DENTISTRY, PHYSIOTHERAPY, RADIOGRAPHY, MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENCE.
WHO WILL STUDY THE REMAINING ONES?

DENTISTRY:
PREAMBLE:
Do you like craft,precision and a good eye? Do you love Health, communication, hardwork and Patience? Do you not mind looking at something that is quite small but sensitive all of your life if you feel? Then Dentistry is for you.

Dentistry , the profession concerned with the prevention and treatment of oral disease, including diseases of the teeth and supporting structures and diseases of the soft tissues of the mouth.
Dentistry also
encompasses the treatment and correction of malformation of the jaws, misalignment of the teeth, and birth anomalies of the oral cavity such as cleft palate .
In addition to general practice, dentistry includes many specialties and subspecialties, including orthodontics and dental orthopedics, pediatric dentistry , periodontics ,
prosthodontics , oral and maxillofacial surgery , oral and maxillofacial pathology ,
endodontics, public health dentistry , and oral and maxillofacial radiology.
DENTISTRY IN NIGERIA.
Dentistry is quite a tough course to enter. Though its mark is quite small compared to medicine and Surgery but it is more difficult to enter since they are less than 50 available sits for new entries.
Dentistry students take virtually courses with Medical Students except OnG(Obstetrics and Gynaecology) Paediatrics and Psychiatry I think.
SO WHO TAKES CARE OF THEIR TEETH?
It is myth that people don't take of their teeth since they have been a lot of awareness lately. A Dentist is also called a Dental surgeon since often times he works on you than prescription.
Dentists are paid same as their their Medical Counterparts.
So where can I work?
* Teaching Hospitals
* Private Practice more often
* Military
* Police and Paramilitary
* Higher Institutions
* Public Health expert
* Pharmaceuticals
* Sales Representative
CONS
* It is streamlined towards the lower face and some part of the Neck
* It is not everyone who will specialise painfully true
* It takes enthusiasm to enjoy your job because most times you are staring at a similar thing which is the mouth.

ANATOMY:
The branch of biology which deals with the structure of Organisms and their parts.
I will not be going into details like gross anatomy,histology and the rest.
The knowledge of anatomy enables one to know vividly how to approach cases pertaining to Organisms. There are various branches from systemic ,Gross and Regional Anatomy.
The popular anatomy studied in undergraduate is the Human anatomy which deals mainly with Humans. It enables you to know what we are made of.
If you're are a person who is interested in Humans and fascinated about it but not necessarily bothered about treating humans this course is for you.
It can also be used as a prerequisite for Medicine and surgery as well as other health courses.
If you feel you want to pursue it as a profession it is always advisable to pursue to PhD.
Where can I work?
This is the major issue people ask.
* Teaching Facilities
Anatomy is a course which is very much feasible in teaching. If you feel you want to be a Lecturer and then progress to a professor this is for you.
* Forensics
Although the pathologists is Chiefly in charge of this, you can act as a Pathology assistant to detect causes of death and also solve puzzling questions since Nigeria has a working Forensics though not very great but at its growing stages.
* Morgues.
You can be in charge of handling and preparing dead bodies for burials for which they are needed.
* Research Institute
Working as a histologist and with comparative anatomy can Chiefly promote medicine and Science.
CONS:
* It is studied by virtually all medical courses so it limits the course
* No serious job advertisement for it
* It involves serious bulky work.

This thread is designed to handle the Need for Health courses for those who would want to go into it in the Latter future or those that are already in it at the beginning stage.
I am an Engineer turned Agriculturist. Some will ask what Concerns Engineering and Medical courses. I have always been on Philanthropic Outreaches with NGO's where I deliver Food produce. I interact with Health workers from all courses. From Dentists, Optometrist,Medical Doctors ,Vets, Nurses, Lab Scientists and many more and also been involved in Researches ranging from food to health.
I will list all the courses in the Health Field in Nigeria and dissect it. You Might correct me if you feel I didn't hit the nail on the head.

* BIOCHEMISTRY
* DENTAL TECHNOLOGY
*DENTISTRY AND DENTAL SURGERY
*MEDICAL BIOCHEMISTRY

First things first many of students are going to pick only 7 at most from these courses.
First is because of the thought of employability and the second is Prestige.
I will be giving you the Pros and cons of every course there in respect to Nigeria.
I HAD TO MODIFY THESE AS I SAW A PERSON SAYING THAT NOT EVERYBODY WILL BE A PHARMACIST, A DENTIST, A NURSE OR A MEDICAL DOCTOR. I TOTALLY AGREE WITH HIM.
IT DOESN'T NECESSARILY MEAN THAT IF YOU LOVE HELPING IN HEALTH MEANS YOU WILL GO WITH THE OBVIOUS SIDE.

We don't even have enough doctors in Nigeria. The young doctors are not writing Nigerian professional exams. They are all after plab, USMLE or one other foreign exam. The future is really scary for healthcare in Nigeria.
According to Nigeria So called statistics we have 72000 doctors registered But the those thar left are over 35000 so guess the amount of those available. Let me just give it an increase of 15000 to make it 90000.
We have less than 500 psychiatrist, over 300 ophthalmologist, less than a thousand Pathologist, less than 250000 nurses.
Less than 100000 optometrist, Less than 100000 pharmacists. Less than 10000 vets and 20000 dentists
Now tell me if we are not headed for a big ditch

The best course anyone can do in today's tech world is computer science. Medicine is also really good. Forget about how bad and useless Nigeria is. Doctors are in demand globally and a medical doctor determined to leave will leave. Same as nurses. I agree with engineering though. Many engineering courses are fast loosing relevance.
I totally agree that medicine can never lose its relevance neither will some medical courses But I see a time when the cost will rise high. Then private individuals will manage the health sector then the costs will sky rocket because better facilities will be there and only those that can take loans or have big sponsors then Doctors salaries will be mouth watering

I know, but it shouldn't be compared to Med lab, it has its own path.
Although in the USA and UK med lab Scientists are under the Pathological Labs and is headed by a Chief Pathologist which is a medical doctor. In Brazil, Kenya, some parts of asia it is headed by those who have a Doctoral degree like pharmacists, microbiologists, lab technologists and Scientists or Biologists, vets, Molecular Biologists.
So guess they're are important after all.
Nigeria is just too rigid to adjust but I bet they will change

Education / Opinion: Many Nairalanders Are Bad Advisors? by Cetacean419: 6:45am On Oct 16, 2020
Most of the time in Nairaland you see young students asking about courses and we play down on things.
In My former account back then in 2007 I asked about Engineering and Agriculture. Many NAIRALANDERS were saying that I should go for engineering and I did since my parents were even saying It is a must.
I do not totally regret it but I wish I went for a course like biotechnology involving Agriculture or Agriculture.
Although I am doing various courses under Agriculture but I wished I studied it.
Agriculture makes you an employer of Labour and I know as small as my farm is, just 1 acre now the one I just relocated to last now. I pay my workers over 30k although they don't work everyday or work for long hours plus benefits.
My guy that studied botany is a big horticulturist sell flowers in Lekki and also sells plants to herb experts, pharmaceutical companies etc.
My aunt studied fishery and she is a hot business woman in Asaba and a yearly gross for fish sales is a lot.
You can work with the course you studied. All those times you are spending your money on fruitlessness and frivolities can go into something tangible.
I hear them condemning Animal Scientists and Vets . I know how much I pay for my poultry, sheeps and goats.
My animal scientist advised me to castrate some of my sheeps which I thought was a expensive.
I got a vet who charged me over 75000 for four sheeps. I know how much the vet fumigates my farm and my poultry.
My aunt don't spend less that 500k every month for a fishery care.
IN SHORT IF YOU ARE GOING FOR A COURSE BECAUSE YOU THINK THERE'S A JOB, YOU ARE IN FOR A LONG THING.
If you study medicine,pharmacy,law or engineering because it is prestigious but not how you can improve the system I pity you.
I HAD THIS MENTALITY UNTIL REALITY HIT HARD.
I SEE MANY YOUNG MED STUDENTS SAYING THEY CAN'T BE JOBLESS BUT UNDERPAID AT MOST . I LAUGH AT THIS MEDIOCRE STATEMENTS.
SO REASON AM YOU GET, SIEVE IT

Well the truth of the matter is education in Nigeria is poorly funded
Education / Re: Doctor Or Lawyer Which Profession Has More Intelligent People by Cetacean419: 3:25pm On Oct 08, 2020
Left for me in terms of general topics a lawyer will beat a Doctor hands down
For general topics I mean like sports, entertainment, politics, business, a lawyer knows a bit about it even in health.
I am not saying that a Doctor isn't intelligent but most are dull in our "contemporary society".
I watch News all the time and most news network analysts are usually lawyers and Human resource personnel.
A lawyer is very confident even when he does know what to say. Doctors are usually trained in Nigeria to accept most of the time and not question.
We have terrible lawyers and doctors as well.
Those of you Med students saying Pneumococcus, Helicobacter Pylori, Emelia, Oedema and many names you guys listed, these are not intelligence but book work.
A lawyer knows a constitution in respect to health, business and daily living. This is intelligence.
Intelligence is the application of knowledge.
Having a lot of knowledge in your field only is not intelligence thank you

Politics / Were The Africans Really Innocent? by Cetacean419: 4:13pm On Oct 05, 2020
The history of the trans-Atlantic slavery is an interesting one.
From what I have read so far in history books Africans are not really innocent or the victims as they claim to be.
The British came with goodies; mirrors, gun-powder, hot drinks and many more and we sold ourselves out.
We might say it was God's plan for Africa but we let our greed take full control of us.
I read that Majority of the British initial expedition here was not a war on us. They did not raid us and started collecting slaves but they used us to defeat us. Many Chiefs sold their Kings because of goodies, parents sold their children and children same.
I am not saying the British were not so Brutal in handling us which was to padlock mouths of slaves, rape our women, Throwing us overboard to reduce weight, killing us as they please but they wouldn't have succeeded without us.
The main reason they took interest in AFRICANS was because of our strength and the West Indies indigenes which they forcefully overcame with weapons because they were not ready to give way and most importantly they were not strong to do a lot of hard work.
There was a story of a slave turned Chief market slave seller in Badagry who married over 40 women and had over 128 children. He was a Chief merchant and he made a lot of money.
After the British let their strong grip off AFRICANS, the Real war began.
In Nigeria for example, Civil war started not long after independence, and now the ruling Class are bigger oppressors than the British.
The British set up schools for us to learn, we destroyed those schools because of lack of maintenance culture and greed.
They sent us abroad to learn, we are sending our children out of schools. They created some outstanding structures we are seeing today but we are destroying our own figures.
They ensured they transported minerals for their own benefit and a little bit of ours but Now the people are transporting resources for their own benefits but to the detriment of the masses.
They built missionary schools which our fathers had to pay bit of stipends for to gain quality education but now the leaders of the church are building Universities which the common members can't afford. Even the government can't provide these also.
IF THE BLAME IS HUNDRED PERCENT, THE BRITISH DESERVE 30% WHILE WE DESERVE 70%.
I wouldn't have imagined the Nigeria during this democracy era producing outspoken nigerians like Falana, Ozekhome, Utomi, Soyinka, Sowore, Peter Obi and many others.
Politics / Re: Shagari’s Son Aminu Apologises To Jonathan, Knocks Buhari by Cetacean419: 3:12pm On Oct 04, 2020
Buhari is a wicked unfortunate human being. This is why every time he becomes a leader, those he governs suffer. 1984 when there was acute recession, can you imagine people were using saw dust to cook? Buhari and Jonathan are not the same things. One left fuel price at N87, Bag of rice at N8000 at most, Queens meal at N450, Paint of garri at N400, a peace ambassador, a PhD holder and was selfless he considered the north before his people which people term "Stupid ". The other is a failure, banned Shehu Shagari from ever contesting an election, truncated Democracy, As a military general caused recession, didn't update himself academically or skill wise for 30 good years, Never had anything to offer, deceived the Yoruba people because of their selfishness, clamoured for restructuring which he later abandoned, only built schools and took projects to Daura, Raised fuel price and is proud of it, Comparing his useless leadership with that of Saudi Arabia, paint of Garri is N900 or N1000 in some places, Yam is more expensive, has a government who has stolen more than any government in the first five years, Queens meal bread is N600, Travelled more than any President for health tourism, banned protests.
FROM MY POINTS ABOVE, TELL ME WHO IS THE BIGGER FAILURE.

Romance / Gender Equality My Foot by Cetacean419: 11:40pm On Sep 30, 2020
I am sick of this Gender equality thing. "E dey worry me for bele". I do advocate for women going to school, heading some positions but this equal right is not feasible. Women were not created to be Men equals but to compliment them. Na wa for this Our SIMPS who advocate for equal rights.
Women are not really accomodating to professions like fashion designing,nursing,physiotherapy and some courses because men will thrive there.
They will say that we are engineers,so so and so.
IF YOU ARE A MAN AND YOU ARE ASKING FOR GENDER EQUALITY YOU ARE A BIG SIMP.
