Education / Re: Should I Go For Pgd Or Bsc, I'm Confused by Champella(m): 1:53pm On May 07, 2015
If i were you, i would have gone to a University to obtain a B.Sc via Direct Entry. My reasons are:

1. It takes away the discrimination i would have faced in the labour market due to the HND i have. Some would say a PGD is equivalent to an M.Sc, but in reality you'll still be looked down on. This is Nigeria remember? So you need to act in a very wise manner by always placing yourself in an advantaged position.

2. There is a higher chance of you coming out with a better result once you're done with your B.Sc. Since you finished with an Upper Credit, it's very likely that you'll finish with a first class after 2 or 3 years (in a 4 or 5 year B.Sc programme) by virtue of the training you underwent in the Polytechnic. By so doing, you'll be shortlisted for the recruitment processes of a company (a better alternative for someone who made a lower credit).

My suggestion is for you to simply apply wisdom and understanding in this issue.

Don't look at the fact that you're going back to school as an undergraduate, rather think of tomorrow. Look at where you would be in 5 - 10 years.

Think of the promotion you would have had and the payment you would have made if you had or never had a B.Sc.

Please my brother, just try and sacrifice these 2 or 3 years for a happier tomorrow for i know you wouldn't be happy to see that a B.Sc holder earns more than you do and is placed higher than you.

Finally, the advantages of you obtaining a B.Sc far outweigh the difficulties involved.

Good luck brother!

Cool don't lose hope.
You are already on a good track but You shouldn't give up on your job search.

Firstly, running a business or firm on your own is not an easy task, if you had worked elsewhere before now, you will have ideas on how businesses and organizations run, which is one of the reasons I strongly advise you shouldn't give up on job search.
You can apply and work voluntarily if they are not willing to pay during the period you will learn a lot about organizations and how businesses run.

THERE IS A BUSINESS SIDE OF EVERYTHING WE DO
Church, Engineering, Accounting, Law, just name it has business in it, else the organization may fail.

Lemme get straight to the point, in your own case, you need to learn how to develop a business;BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT - Sales, Marketing etc.

I'll get back to you later in the evening with a summary of what you should do. Meanwhile, research on Business development, latest marketing trends and so on.

@Op, (LastBorn)kindly take this thread off Job board, since its not only about jobs, preferably, General section. Thank you.

Oh brother! Thanks a whole lot for your input. It's been moved already to the General section.

Business / Re: New Biz by Champella(m): 9:12am On Apr 10, 2015
You don't need to invest all the N5,000,000 you have in a business you've not carefully researched on. Try and start small and you'll make some profits.

I suggested these ones because you can set them up with atleast N100,000 - N500,000. As time goes on you can expand your business.

If the services you're offering are top notch, i bet you that you'll have so many customers. Each customer will automatically recommend you to other people. This way, your profit margin will increase.

So you have to think of making a mark then all other things will follow
Business / Re: New Biz by Champella(m): 7:44am On Apr 09, 2015
Hello Poster

These are my suggestions:

1. CLOTHING: Everybody wears clothes and its accessories. You can start with a little amount of about N200,000. You can buy bales of shirts, jean trousers, T-shirts, etc and distribute them to Retailers. You can also sell them in units.

Clothing items are not perishable compared to food items. It's not time consuming as you can also engage in other activities. You can also make use of some of your clothing items. This is a way of advertising your products indirectly.

2. DIESEL SUPPLY: You can supply to Banks, Schools, Eateries, Hotels, etc. You have to buy from the source (example: NNPC Depot) at a reduced rate and sell them to these places i've mentioned.

These places have to keep their generators running at all times, hence a high demand for your products.

3. BEAUTY SALOON: You can set up a male and female section and employ someone to manage it for you.

The male section will handle barbing of hairs and other related services. The female section will offer services like: Plaiting, Manicure/Pedicure, Sales of weavons, etc

You know women always want to look very beautiful, so you have to capitalise on this.

Make sure your business premises is very neat and organised such that while some Customers are waiting to be attended to, they could be watching some interesting programmes from DSTV on your flat screen TV, Nollywood movies, football, etc. You can keep so many magazines so that some people can read while waiting for their turn to be attended to.

4. EATERY: Everybody needs food to survive. You simply employ a very good Cook and some other hands to help her out.

Again, your place has to be neatly arranged. Some items you'll need in your Eatery may include: Referigerator, Television, Air Conditioner, Generator, etc.

Make sure your meals are very tasty and are served under highly hygienic conditions. There is a place at Aka road, Uyo i ate White soup. Oh my world! That white soup been make brains o with lots of obstacles (meats). cool

Make sure your drinks are always cold. The prices of food have to be affordable to all classes of people - low, middle, high class.

5. PHOTOCOPYING, TYPING, PRINTING, LAMINATING, SPIRAL BINDING, GRAPHICAL DESIGNING SERVICES: These type of services have a daily demand.

You simply purchase these equipents and employ capable hands to manage them for you. There is no day people don't photocopy their documents. Students will always type and print their assignments, projects, etc.

6. PROVISION SHOP: Once you've gotten a shop, you can stock your shop with higly demanded products. Food items (Beverages, Rice, Beans, Garri, Snacks, etc), Toileteries (Creams, Soap, Perfumes, Detergents, etc), Books, Drinks (Wines, Soft drinks, Water, etc).

There has to be a Generator and Refrigerator so that drinks will be served very cold at all times.

You'll need someone to look after the shop for you. Ensure your shop is always very neat and organised.

N/B: You have to research a bit more on these ones i've mentioned so you can get a clearer picture of things. I gave these examples based on their high demand. They are a bit easy to set up.

Ensure that whoever you employ treats your Customers with respect. Failure to do this will make you lose so many Customers. This will make your business to fail.

He/she has to be very sincere. I don't need to say much on this. These are all for now.

Good luck brother!

Politics / Lessons Learnt In The Just Concluded INEC Election by Champella(m): 8:28am On Apr 05, 2015
LESSONS LEARNT IN THE JUST CONCLUDED INEC ELECTIONS

Nigeria witnessed a kind of transformation that has never existed in her Political history after the APC ousted the PDP to become the number one Political party for the first time in sixteen (16) years.

There are a couple of events that led to this outcome. These events have proven to be some sort of lessons to be learnt. A couple of them are:

1. EARLY AND PROPER PREPARATION: It is often said that "anyone who fails to plan, is already planning to fail". A carefully drawn plan facilitates decision making processes thus, leading to the achievement of goals.

A well thought out plan must make room for contingencies. This leads to modifications and therefore re-strategising in order to achieve set goals.

2. LITTLE THINGS COUNT: It may interest you to know that the little things we take for granted will definitely affect the outcome of our actions directly or indirectly.

This is why i so much love this man, JOSE MOURINHO. He never takes things for granted. If you look at the teams he has managed in the past (FC Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid), you would notice that these teams never took things for granted. It is as a result of this that his teams would go on to win the League titles with very high points.

3. CHANGE: This is the only constant thing in nature. Buhari's camp adopted this slogan and made sure they acted on it. This goes to show that every contestant has an equal chance of winning a competiton. Hence, the pendulum of victory can swing to either side.

There will always be "favourites" and "underdogs" in any contest, but everything just ends there. Being a favourite doesn't mean an underdog has no chance to win it. In so many cases, underdogs have been seen to cause upsets.

4. MAKE SURE YOUR HOUSE IS IN ORDER: Every successful side makes sure that she keeps all her members united. If you are unable to unite your members then there will be various cracks in the system, thereby leaving you vulnerable to attack from the opponents and in the long run the whole house will collapse.

Have you ever wondered how JOSE MOURINHO and ALEX FERGUSON kept their teams (Chelsea and Manchester United respectively) ticking? These two teams were blessed with world class players, yet these two Coaches united them. They both assembled very formidable sides that were very strong domestically and in Europe. The unity in the team led them to various victories.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria had some problems immediately after they won the African Cup of Nations which could not be resolved. The resultant effect of this was their inability to qualify for the 2015 African Cup of Nations as well as poor results.

5. TAKE RISKS AND TAKE YOUR CHANCES: I'm a firm believer in risk taking. And the just concluded INEC general elections further validates my belief. Hence, the statement. . .

"Take Risks! If you lose, you will be wiser. If you win, you will be happier."

If there is one man i admire so much in this world, then that's Arsenal's Coach, ARSENE WENGER. He takes risks by always giving youngsters a chance to prove their mettle. He loses some and wins some. These victories have seen the emergence of world class players like JACK WILSHERE, ASHLEY COLE, FRANCESC FABREGAS, etc

In as much as i love taking risks, i also believe that one must take and make good use of his chances. You may never be lucky a second time. The likes of RUUD VAN NISTLEROOY, DIDIER DROGBA, JAVIER HENANDEZ, etc readily come to mind.

6. CALMNESS: Anyone who shows some level of calmness while dealing with various situations tends to make wise decisions. These calming influence has a way of positively affecting a unit.

One of the men who stood out during the election was the INEC Chairman, Prof. ATTAHIRU JEGA. He was publicly (in front of the cameras) accused by a PDP member, GODSDAY ORUBEBE for being bias and tribalistic during the result collation process. But the INEC Chairman shocked the whole world with his reply. The way and manner he replied him was out of this world. His calmness was breathtaking and his words sent shivers down my spine.

And trust Nigerians to always capitalise on situations as he is now called "JEGAlity" to mean - a calming influence. Some quarters have even seen him as "JEGAcetamol" - a drug used to restore calmness.

One really needs to be calm when dealing with very difficult people.

7. HARDWORK AND SMARTNESS: It is often believed that there is no shortcut to success. The price for success is simply hardwork.

However, it must be noted that hardwork alone does not bring success. You need to incorporate smartness.

The APC camp really took advantage of the social media. They had that online presence to win more votes to themselves. They made use of Twitter, Facebook, etc.

It was a great rebranding process online where campaigns from Smartphones can build momentum at low cost.

"The digital strategy has been a lifeline of the campaign for young people. We needed to create an image that enabled people to connect with him," Adebola Williams, the 29-year-old whose Lagos-based communications company, StateCraft, orchestrated Buhari's digital drive, told Reuters.

Africa’s most populous nation - with 170 million inhabitants - has some of the world's highest levels of mobile phone ownership. There are 127 million mobile phone subscriptions in Nigeria, the International Telecommunications Union says.

8. DETERMINATION AND PERSEVERANCE: Anyone who needs success has to be very determined. Such a person needs to persevere even when the results do not go in his favour as there is never a smooth path to success.

Abraham Lincoln (born 12th February, 1809) who was the 16th President of the USA, had passed through lots of difficulties and setbacks in life. How do you explain a situation whereby a person loses his job, his business, his Sweetheart, had nervous breakdown, defeated for Speaker, defeated for nomination for Congress, lost renomination for Congress, defeated for U.S Senate twice, defeated for Vice President, and finally becomes a President in 1860? This man simply persevered even when the odds were against him.

It must be noted that Gen. (Rtd) Muhammadu Buhari had lost the Presidential election three times (2003 - to OLUSEGUN OBASANJO), (2007 - to UMARU MUSA YAR'ADUA), (2011 - GOODLUCK EBELE JONATHAN) before winning it the fourth time (2015).

9. PATIENCE: Patience they say, is a virtue. Having patience means that you will learn to accept setbacks and everyday problems without getting angry and making yourself and others miserable.

I can remember the Barcelona side managed by PEP GUARDIOLA (2008 - 2012) were very patient with the ball. They could monopolise possession, try to create scoring chances then tear their opponents to shreds.

Buhari has been very patient all these years despite all the setbacks, and that patience paid off as he emerged as the country's President.

10. BE GRACIOUS IN DEFEAT: The outgoing President, GOODLUCK EBELE JONATHAN had conceded defeat in a competitive election to MUHAMMADU BUHARI and became the first sitting Nigerian President to do so.

I must say this man has won my heart for his actions. In his words. . .

"I promised the country free and fair elections. I have kept my word. I have also expanded the space for Nigerians to participate in the democratic process. That is one legacy I will like to see endure.
"Although some people have expressed mixed feelings about the results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), I urge those who may feel aggrieved to follow due process based on our constitution and our electoral laws, in seeking redress.
"As I have always affirmed, nobody’s ambition is worth the blood of any Nigerian. The unity, stability and progress of our dear country is more important than anything else."

You've shown us that any election process should never be a do-or-die affair.

With these words, i must say i'm very proud of you, Sir. May God bless you wherever you go.

Education / Career Prospects Of Office And Information Management by Champella(m): 2:37pm On Mar 29, 2015
Dear Nairalanders

Please help a friend of mine on a suitable course to study as he is a bit confused right now. This is the message he sent to me earlier today. . .

"I bought JAMB form with an intention of studying MASS COMMUNICATION or POLITICAL SCIENCE, but i was told that i cannot study these courses because of my grades in WAEC. They offered me OFFICE AND INFORMATION MANAGEMENT which i have little or no idea about. Please what do you advise me to do? Thanks."

I couldn't give him an answer because i wanted him to be sure of what he's about getting into. I would love to get more views from the more experienced persons in here on this subject.

However, i tried to raise a few questions regarding this issue. Some of them were:

1. With a degree in OFFICE AND INFORMATION MANAGEMENT, where can he work?
2. Is there an avenue for self employment after graduation?
3. What skills does he need to possess to stand out of the crowd during the recruitment processes of an organisation?
4. Can these skills be readily transferred from one sector of the Nigerian economy to another?
5. Would this field be relevant 25 - 40 years from now?
6. Who are my rivals?
7. What skills, knowledge and expertise do they (my rivals) possess that can make a potential recruiter to go after them 8 out of 10 times?

I therefore plead with the Moderators of this section to move this thread to the front page so that this matter can be treated urgently.

Thank you
Education / BEYOND GRADES: Other Things That Matter To Employers by Champella(m): 5:05pm On Mar 21, 2015
BEYOND GRADES: OTHER THINGS THAT MATTER TO EMPLOYERS

In an article I wrote in December last year I defended grade – or certificate – as a good measure of the potential of a candidate whom the employer does not know.

While your GPA is a good indicator of your performance in school, most employers’ view is that it’s not the only indicator of how well you will perform in the roles required by your job. And that opinion holds water because there are many students with excellent grades who struggle when it comes to putting their knowledge into real practice, just as there are many with poor grades but possess the skills required to make great things happen.

So, to really figure out whether you’re a good match for a job position, most employers look beyond your school's grades. And here are six of those other things that they will consider before offering you that job opportunity:

1. HOW YOU HANDLE REAL-LIFE SITUATIONS
Being able to draw a sketch of the sales funnel or recite the 4P’s of marketing is one thing, but your ability to put that knowledge into real-world practice is far more important.

Truth is, things won’t always happen in reality in exactly the same way they’ve been taught by your college professors or described in your textbooks.
So, employers want to know how good you are at approaching both usual and unusual challenges that your job might throw in your face.

2. HOW YOU LEARN
Take your time to figure out how best you learn new things and retain information. Some people only need to hear it, others need to read it many times over, some need to write it, and there are those who need to teach or practice it before it sticks on. Employers are usually interested in knowing how well and fast you learn new things because it indicates how effective you will be and how efficiently you’ll play your roles.

3. YOUR RELEVANT PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
If you have taken up a temporary jobs, internship positions, or volunteer roles in your industry in the past, you will be preferred by employers over someone who has never done the same. This is because such roles prepare you for the working world.
More importantly, proofs that you produced great results while in those positions will convince employers that you will be an asset to them. So, be prepared to provide proofs of your achievements at any relevant position you’ve held in the past.

4. YOUR COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Your ability to convey your ideas and thoughts clearly and confidently through speaking or writing goes a long way to determine your chances of getting your dream job.
So, if you’re lacking in good public speaking or writing skills, you need to improve on them through consistent practice. Even if you have the best grades in the world, no employer would favor you if your communication skills are poor.

5. HOW WELL YOU MANAGE TIME
How long it takes you to complete each task determines how efficient and productive you will be as an employee. This explains why employers are usually interested in your time management skills.
In the working world, you need to strike a balance between your work and your personal and social life. You need to meet deadlines and plan ahead of time, without pulling off your hair in the process. So, start preparing yourself for that now.

6. YOUR NETWORK
It is commonly said that “whom you know” is more important than “what you know”. And it’s true, especially in the corporate world. For example, if you’re a marketer, an employer will most likely to hire you if you have connections with high-profile individuals who are potential customers or clients for that employer.
So, it’s important to start meeting new people and networking with them. Besides making you attractive to employers, it will help you to link up with individuals who can connect you with job opportunities you may not be aware of.
Now, let me emphasise once again that this is not to mean that your GPA is irrelevant to employers. It is still very crucial, since it indicates how well you have played your role as a student and how much you know of the basic theories of your discipline.
However, your GPA is not all that you need to get a good job. Your approach to real life challenges, learning methods, relevant experience, communication skills, time management skills, and network are just as important to most employers.

5 Degrees Employers Don’t Want (Check For Your Course)

1. HISTORY - 9.5% Unemployment rate
They say those who don’t learn history are bound to repeat it. But if you believe the Georgetown study, those who major in it could be bound for the unemployment line.

Why These Grads May Have It Tough: Sorenson says that there is little opportunity for Historians in today’s job market.

“Historians, appraisers, preservationists, etc. These are very niche markets with highly skilled and knowledgeable individuals who are called to the scene when needed for fact-checking or accuracy, not a long-term role with a growing company in today’s economy,” he says.

2. FINE ARTS - 10.1% Unemployment rate

If you have your heart set on a Fine Arts major, it might take a lot to change your mind. Still, you should be prepared for the harsh reality you might face post-graduation, since this major has a high unemployment rate, according to the Georgetown study.

Why These Grads May Have It Tough: Sorenson says that despite being very self-fulfilling this degree may not be specific enough to attract employment.

“For instance, if [students] want to work in design or be a creative director, they’ll need a more specific skill set such as graphic design and creative writing to be a successful ‘artist,’” he says.

And if you want to be an artist, skill and your work is most important, not a degree, explains Sorenson.

3. ECONOMICS - 10.4% Unemployment rate

With all the airtime that news programs spend on the economy, you’d think this degree would be a sure thing. But you’d be wrong. Just take a look at that double digit unemployment rate found by the Georgetown study.

Why These Grads May Have It Tough: “…The education you receive [in economics] is based mostly in theory, making your knowledge difficult to apply to the real world of employment,” says David Bakke, a career expert at Money Crashers, a website devoted to career and personal finance advice.

For example, he says finance majors may beat you out for jobs in the world of finance; accounting majors have specific skills for accountant positions; and so on.

4. ANTHROPOLOGY & ARCHEOLOGY - 12.6% Unemployment rate

These are intellectual, fascinating, and noble degrees. Unfortunately, a diploma – not a career – might be the only treasure these majors yield after graduation judging from their high unemployment rate in the Georgetown study.

Why These Grads May Have It Tough: There is not much demand for field work, and teaching the subjects in colleges and universities demands a higher degree than a bachelor’s, says Bakke.

As for the general job market? “These types of degrees are considered to be too grounded in academia for them to have any real value in the business world,” he says.

5. INFORMATION SYSTEMS - 14.7% Unemployment rate

We live in the Information Age, so you’d think that a major with the word “information” in it would mean a promising job outlook for its grads, right? Well, the Georgetown report found otherwise. This major had the highest unemployment rate out of all the college majors in the study.

Why These Grads May Have It Tough: “The true nature of information systems is to improve the efficiency of a business, so once the system is put into place, your services may or may not be required on a long-term basis,” says Tony Sorenson, CEO of the executive and staff recruiting firm Versique Search & Consulting.

As a result, there is less demand for new and lesser-experienced information systems professionals, he explains.
